[MOD] 18 Dec: UI patch (Menu Both Sides / Search / Search In Landscape) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

While using paulobrien's UI patch with the search button, I noticed that when in landscape, the search button goes away. I made this to fix that. It is essentially paulobrien's code with some minor edits.
LTE version is based off of this.
Disclaimers:
-This is the first patch of this kind or any kind that I have ever made.
-It is only tested on VillainROM-AOSP-r1.1
-I am not responsible for your device being bricked.
-The usual

I made an experimental one for LTE. I do not have an LTE Nexus so I can't test it. If it doesn't work, re-flashing your rom should change it back to what it was.

Any way to change the order? Like recent apps, home, back, search.

It is done. I tested it on my GSM VillainROM Nexus and it seemed to work. LTE version in the works.
EDIT: LTE version done

I flashed the searchinlandLTEv0.zip and did the standard wipe dalvik cache. after booting there are no soft buttons and the status bar is missing. power+volume down won't take a picture but ddms to the rescue. will a logcat help? let me know.
Edit: i am on stock 4.0.2 rooted w/ busybox.

ROM needs to be deodexed and if it is a stock ROM it is most likely odexed.

LTE works fine. One thing though; the menu dots at the top are smaller than the bottom ones in landscape mode. Any way to fix?
Also for some reason the search bar has reappeared on my home screens even though I'm using novalauncher.
Would you mind modding the patch in this thread to work with landscape?

same thing happened to me and I'm deodexed.

Working great for me on LTE.
Only issue I have is when going into apps that darken the buttons, ie: camera... it still shows 3 dots instead of 4.
Is it possible to get long-press shortcuts programmed into the buttons? Voice search for search and app switcher for home? Then can go to Back, Home, Search layout?

Thus is not for 4.0.3 roms correct?

Any chance of getting an update to fix the couple little issues Pikabob?
-when going into apps that darken the buttons, ie: camera... it still shows 3 dots instead of 4.
-Dots on the top in landscape mode are not the same size as the bottom ones (for the menu option)

I will try to fix those, but I may have to abandon the LTE version as I have no LTE model to test on.

Any chance the bottom buttons could be rearranged? To left to right-
Multitask search home back and invisible menu at both sides?

There is no way to remove the search bar. It is programmed in the ROM and won't be possible to remove unless through flashing a custom rom which have it removed.
Do you have 4g coverage in your area?

This is false. There is a way to remove it from the home screen. I believe you have to go into applications and clear defaults. Its been done in videos. I'll update the post when I find it.

You can disable the Google Search widget from your setting/Apps.
There's no need to flash custom ROMs. You won't be able to use the space though.

By "LCD", do you mean "LED"? If so, then yes. There are LED notifications and the LED is under the bezel near the bottom of the device. The easiest way to test is by receiving e-mails or SMS. There is no SD card slot. You may remove the Google search bar from the screen, however, even upon removing it you will not be able to utilize the space for extra icons, widgets, or folders. In order to free that area up entirely, you would need a custom ROM.

No you do not need a custom ROM. The search widget up on top is embedded within the Launcher.apk (APP) not the ROM.
If you use a custom launcher such as: ADW Launcher EX, ADW Launcher, LauncherPro, etc... it will get rid of it.
Alternatively, you can root your phone and hit up Clockwork Recovery and flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385425 -- YOU DO NOT NEED A CUSTOM ROM FOR THIS AS IT WILL WORK ON STOCK. However it might affect your OTA.
Or try Nova Launcher @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389071

SystemUI crashes because you have navigation bar enabled (which tablets don't have). You can modify your framework-res.apk to hide the navigation bar (thread HERE) and use something like LMT launcher or button savior to get home/back/etc. keys. Then it won't crash anymore. I've done this and it works fine. If you are on the 4.0.4 verizon ROM, you can find the modified framework in the thread HERE (and you can find simple instructions to do it yourself) or flashable HERE.
Alternatively, I've read (but not tested) that adding the following to your build.prop will stop it from crashing at 160 dpi.
Code:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

I gave you your answer. Read my previous post. You just need to hide the navigation bar. I messed around with it on my phone running verizon 4.0.4 by just making the required change to framework-res.apk and changing the screen density to 160 dpi. It's simple and you don't need to be a 'developer'. You ask for help, but don't give any specifics on what ROM version you have. I linked you to 4.0.4 version. If you're not using that verizon ROM, post your framework-res.apk and I'll mod it for you. It literally takes about 2 minutes to do (counting the time to upload it as an attachment here).

I'm pretty sure aokp has the ability to hide the navigation bar already. Look through the settings. Hide it and then switch to 160 dpi.

I finally got it working on my own.
One thing that remains and it's a biggie. I can't make or receive calls. The phone app crashes every time.
I did a lot of google searches and all the other devs are stuck at the same point.
However, I did find one dev in the Galaxy Note forums that made a ROM that supposedly works in tablet mode.
Any ideas?

Yeah unfortunately I haven't seen anything yet that forces the buttons onto the bottom. The likely reason for this is that the buttons would take up .25-.5 inch of screen real estate in landscape which would not be desirable at all.
I got it to work.
Here is what I had to do.
- Hide the nav bar using AOKP (builds 25 - 27 work)
- Change my dpi to 192 or less
-- This brought out the tablet interface (menu buttons on lower left). Notifications and time on the lower right etc
- Phone app would keep on crashing and I was unable to make or receive calls
-- Fixed this by downloading AOKP build 27 phone.apk for the HTC Incredible and replaced the phone.apk on my nexus. The reason why the phone app would crash was because of the dpi, so I had to find a lower dpi phone.apk.
Was then able to use all the basic functions of my phone including the market. However, the entire thing seemed a unstable (would have rom manager or systemUI crash randomly).
I'm giving it up for now. Hopefully some dev will see the value in getting this working and create a complete ICS rom for it.

Yes, I confirm that adding "qemu.hw.mainkeys=1" to build.prop works as well.
I figured out that 180 dpi is the lowest you can go and not have the phone app crash. The launcher lags when running landscape though.

[MOD|1.26|1.28|1.29] Disable the annoying ICS 3-dot Menu | Aroma **May-05**

This modification will give you the full resolution for all non-ICS apps. I guess many of you have been waiting for this.
The Window-Switcher Key (right one) will be remapped to the Menu button. This key will be usable system-wide!
**update** The recent app's key is remapped to long-pressing home
**update #2** I've made a cleaner removal of the 3-dot menu;
-> the screen-overlay is now fully usable
-> the keyboard has the arrow-keys
-> no more changes to SystemUI.apk, the zip includes the stock version now
**update #3** by popular request of the i-want-to-long press-home-as-menu fanboys, i've made a zip, fullscreen-v2-lp_home_menu.zip
it contains stock qwerty.kl & stock SystemUI.apk
**update #4** support for 1.28.401.9
**update #5** Added Aroma installer
**update #6** support for 1.29.401.7
**update #7** fixed the arrow keys I've broken in update #5, all versions
Root is required, duh
Use on deodexed ROM's based on 1.26.x/1.28.x/1.29.x only(tested on 1.26.401.2 & 1.28.401.9 & 1.29.401.7)
Use the attached aroma installer (all versions included, 1.26/1.28/1.29/stock) with CWM recovery
There are some re-odexed zip's here (I do not/will not provide odexed versions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25533464&postcount=373 & http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25063642&postcount=279

Why would you want a double tap rather than a single tap? You can already differentiate between short and long tap; there's no need to complicate by making it a double-tap unless you're trying to cram three different functions onto a button.

Swapping "Back" & "Recent Apps" buttons???

So I am a LONG time Samsung user. I've had every generation of the Note's and recently moved to the Pixel XL after returning my Note 7.
The phone is great and silky smooth so far but my biggest gripe and I know this is something I could become accustomed too if I had too but I was hoping that maybe there was an easy way to swap the placement of the two buttons.
On Samsung's the back button is on the right and the recent apps button on the left. Almost all other Androids are swapped (The Pixel is no different obviously) but trying to re-wire 6 plus years of back button pressing is going to be a lot of work and I have my fingers crossed there is a way to to do this easily within settings somewhere that I have missed.
The buttons themselves are merely icons on the screen, so swapping their positions doesn't seem unreasonable, I know you can do it with a rooted phone but I obviously don't care to void my day old phone's warranty quite yet. I'd understand if they were illuminated buttons on the bezel like the Samsung phones, but these are icons.
Anyone figure this out?
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried the app All in One Gestures? I don't have my Pixel XL yet, but I use the All in One Gestures app to swap the back and recent buttons on my Galaxy S6.
First off, unlocking the bootloader and modifying does not void the warranty on Google phones. There are no software methods included to swap the navbar icons. Only way remaining is to unlock the bootloader and look for a way to mod it.

I came from Samsung also. If you decide to unlock your bootloader and flash TWRP you can use this. Works great is what I used before I went to pure Nexus. And u can flash back to stock it will stick with it. Until u do factory reset. Comes with aroma installer so you can decide what you want.

Just change them in system ui tuner.
If you don't have it. Pull down statusbar. Press the settings icon and hold it for about 5 secs.
Now you should have it in settings.
Go to navbar
There you can just pull the symbols by holding the = and pull them up or down.

You can do it in TWRP using the file manager in there. No root needed. Just temp boot TWRP swap the apks and reboot.

You're right again ! Man, I'm so out of it. Since owning the pixel I haven't flashed / rooted / modified anything
Thanks so much for your help !
Yes, you can do it with root or booting twrp. One day Google will allow you to change this within the stock firmware.

Did you push and hold the cog wheel when you pull down the notification screen? You have to do it for a long 5 seconds, then the option for system UI should appear when you go into settings.
MonarchX said:
Yes, I did all that, but SystemUI does not have any NavBar settings, at least not in stock 7.1.1 ROM, even when rooted.

I would assume that since you are rooted, that you have TWRP installed or at least know how to do it?
I'd flash WETA Mod 3.1. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/themes/mod-weta-ui-mods-t3491181
Gives you a bunch of customization options including adding NavBar tuner back in the System UI. Easier I think than going in and messing with system files. At least IMO.
Wait I can install TWR P without having unlock Bootloader?

No.
Also works with O

It won't work. That option is not enabled by default. You need to decompile system ui apk and add a line of code to tuner_prefs.xml for nav bar to show up in system ui tuner.

When you say "decompile the apk, to add aline", can you please elaborate? I have had a few notes from Samsung and can't get used to the back button on the left for my Lenovo TB-X103F tablet.
I have held the cog for 5 seconds to reveal the "system ui tuner" category. However, nav bar isn't shown.
Something like was is shown here? https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2184207

I use "Custom Navigation Bar" app and toggle the switch with one tap. https://play.google.com/store/apps/....systemuituner&rdid=xyz.paphonb.systemuituner

Any navbar apps that add menu? Returning Android newbie

I had an iPhone for a few years and the pixel brought me back. The progress android has made has been phenomenal but I see a few things missing that used to be here before. Honestly I think I'm overlooking it but who knows.
FYI I have an unlocked bootloader and am running magisk running stock rom and kernel.
1. I used to love my Note 1's navbar with the search and menu button in the navbar. I remember xposed being able to do it but the modules haven't been updated and just cause a bootloop on the pixel. The customnavbar by paphonb doesn't allow you to have the menu button on the bar. Is there a way to make this work with oreo?
2. What happened to the text notifications? I replaced Google's main text app with Textra but I recall there being custom notifications and ringers all being in the contacts app.
3. What happened to changing the apps notification sound? Back then it was really easy to set the sound of the apps but I hardly see that feature.
4. Can you change the lockscreen clock font? I changed my system font and the clock has a question mark where the colon used to be. I know I could find another font but I really like this one.
5. How do you get in and out of the phone quickly? I find myself double tapping on the display and most of the time it works. Is there a better way?
Note: I saw some of these tweaks were on substratum but I couldn't get it to work for me. I tried to use substratum but the themes won't take because I'm on stock or because I don't know what I'm doing. I would like a clean lockscreen or one where I could swipe to the left or right and start recording. I forget the name but there used to be an app that customized the lockscreen.
If anyone could help me figure out Oreo I would greatly appreciate it!

I don't have much time this morning but I can answer for 1,4 and 5 at least.

Thank you so much for your help!
The font fix is exactly what I needed. I hated that square or question mark for the colon!
The custom nav bar app is the one I was talking about by php. I don't see a way to add the menu button to the nav bar on that app but I'll look and confirm.
I still use my iPhone silicone cases for this phone so the fingerprint won't work. That's disappointing I thought there might be a quicker way.
Thanks though!

It does but it doesn't let you add the menu to the navbar. And it also removes the battery percentage from the status bar for me. I wish it worked because that would be perfect for me with the navbar and customizable sounds [emoji21]

Either get a new case or cut a hole for the fingerprint reader. Problem solved ?

When you have cases like these cutting them is NOT an option

That's fair, but they aren't meant for the pixel phones. Sell them and get a new one with a proper cut out for the fingerprint reader.

So I installed it but I'm not sure what to do next. System tuner was already activated but I don't see any other options. Do you have the original thread this was posted in? I don't want you to spoon feed it to me but I'm lost after the flash

I'll let the Dev weigh in on that. It's his mod and wouldn't want to give any misinformation with it's installation after the February update :good:

So this adds the button that looks like the menu but it doesn't function like the menu at all. It disappears and I think it has to do with the 66 being set as the code. I don't think that's the right code for the menu button to actually work. I took a screenshot.
Either way I'm giving up for now
