So several people have started to notice that "AudioOut_1" wake lock might be polling our batteries unwillingly on our part. So I decided to go out and disable everything that could make sound except for the ringtones and notifications themselves since we all have to have that. This is what I came across...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Settings > Sound
Uncheck "Touch sounds"
Uncheck "Screen lock sound"
Profit.

Just went an hour without losing 1% battery after I did this.
Some people are claiming they only are losing 1% or less per hour now, just leaving the phone sitting not doing anything. So this may be the temporary fix for the phone being awake when it doesn't need to be.

I tend to turn those off anyway, just hadn't gotten around to it yet. I went ahead and did it now, along with vibrate on keypress. We'll see how it works!

Seems to be 50/50 on this
Ive had those off and I am actually going to run my phone in vibrate only mode for a while and see what results from that.
this has little to no effect on battery life. Look at your Android OS battery consumption before, and after. It will be the same
Biggest solution I've found for battery life is disabling my GPS when I don't need it, and going to CDMA rather than LTE/CDMA. They're still there for me when I want them, but most of the time I don't need them.
Right now I've had the phone off the charger for 4 hours where it was topped off; I'm at 91% now, with moderate use (Google Currents for half an hour, about another 20 minutes total screen-on time doing other dinky things, three texts)
First of all, disabling GPS will have absolutely no affect on your battery life. The GPS is only enabled when an app calls for it, if you don't have Google Maps open, then your GPS won't be engaged.
And turning off the sounds will have little to no affect, it's the vibrating that kills your battery more. Turn off haptic feedback, turn off vibrating notifications, turn off vibrate on key press for the keyboard.
Oh, and staying connected to wifi is much easier on the battery than using data. On wifi your phone doesn't have to keep polling the cell towers for signal

Turning off GPS works for me because I often use social apps (e.g. Facebook) that engage GPS for their 'check-in' features. It may be a minor thing, but having turned the GPS off, I've seen real results. *shrug*
Also, maybe a gimme for you smarties, but I disabled VZ Backup Assistant.

Yes what you are saying has made sense in the past for Froyo and GB but we are having some sort of unknown wake lock and this seems to be the biggest one. Ever since I have disabled both of those features my AudioOut_1 wake lock hasn't awakened the phone ONE TIME.

Get your phone down to 50% under normal usage(Not playing with the phone until 50%) just keeping it in your pocket, checking it occasionally..ect
Open Battery Battery Stats
On the Top Drop Down select
"Partial Wakelocks"
and on the Second
"Since Unplugged"
What are the top three? Anything near 1% is minimal and should be ignored for now.

On one occasion, the tuna usb otg kernel process woke up for 7 hours, people got mipi_link keep awake high, etc.
Check the above threads.
If you have galaxy Nexus, check your Android OS Keep awake time... That must be high for no reason.
Nexus S users who got the official ICS from Google recently are experiencing the same issue.

I had a custom rom with dreadful battery switched back to the latest stock and have noticed the following: When you have good signal the screen on and awake seem to match up, i only lost 30% in TWO DAYS! then suddenly when i went out to the country side today i lost the remaining 70% in only a few hours seems that when the phone has low signal is is almost ALWAYS awake. I understand that in lower signal areas the phone tries harder to get signal but surly it shouldn't be awake like 90% of the time!
my top 1 was some sort of googlephotos sync service. i might turn off instant upload with google+.
that audioOut_1 was at like 1.2%, turned off these 2 settings before i unplugged from charger

Yep that is another major contributing factor to terrible battery life. My phone will drain VERY slowly in good signal and die rapidly in bad signal.

I let my phone discharge fully till it turned itself off!
Charged it for 4 or 5 hours.
Now I used it to make 3 short calls (5mins each) and send 10 or so texts, and surf for about 5 minutes, use google sjy mpas for 5minutes, showcase some video to some friends 2mins, general messing 10mins altogether.
Phone is up 40hours now (since charge) and still at 80%. I am very impressed.
I put it to airplane mode between 12am and 7am though as I don't like to be woken by drunk friends texts at 2am etc. (it happens sometimes).
I think those of us (me included) who slated the battery life originally didn't relaise we were using the phone non-stop pretty much for the entire day, trying out all the features on it. I doubt the first week of use will be "typical use" for ANY user
Happy Days
My battery on day one seems fine, 12.5 hours running so far, screen at 100%, everything on automatic syncing (and I mean everything, Weather, Twitter, FB, Gmail etc), continuous WiFi connection throughout, plenty of "first day" playing around and still sitting at something like 20%. With a few more charges and more typical use will last a day just fine, which is all I ask, since I always charge my phones overnight...
When i got my phone i let it run out as it had half power, i overcharged it a few hours then let it die, then i do the same again but not overcharge it and let it die. Now i charge it when i need to but i seem to be getting 3 days worth with usage out of it and i use gps, web and have things on auto. Seems to be much better than when i first had it as the battery didnt even last a day but now its past 2 days.
I assume with newer firmwares etc this will improve
My battery life seems to get worse. I charged it fully ... it has been on for 6 hours and I have put 3g on for a while (1hour max and i barely have used it) and my battery is already 60% ... is that poor?? This is my second phone as well!!!

I thought a full charge only required 3 hours..?
Anyone having surprisingly short battery life go into the phone keypad and dial in *#*#4636#*#*, when you key in that last * you will be taken to a testing menu (I've added a contact with this number and when in the dialer I can long press on the number as select edit number before calling to take me to this screen)
In this menu there are options to see phone and battery information as well as usage statistics for apps. The best battery option is "battery history" this shows you what apps are using your battery for various things such as network and processor usage. You can see this data for since you last rebooted your phone, unplugged it or for the whole life of the phone.
The first important part is "other usage", "running" shows you the percentage of the time your phone has been awake and doing stuff, "screen on" is the percentage of time your screen has been on, the difference between these two is when your phone has the screen is turned off but the phone is still working such as when syncing. Ideally you want these two percentages to be as close together as possible but it depends on how much syncing you have going on automatically in the background. If your running percentage is at or near 100% then an app is keeping your phone awake and using battery.
Next we have "partial awake use", this is what as been running in the background when you have the screen turned off and any apps that process or sync in the background would be listed here, the longer the bar, the bigger the drain on your battery. On my phone now the biggest bar by far is android system but it is still only small.
With "sensor usage" this is what has been using your sensors, games that use the sensors will feature heavily here.
"Gps usage" is again pretty self explanatory, whatever has been using gps.
"Network usage" was a real eye opener for me, I found out that an app was downloading megs of data all day and dwarfed all the other bars and was the reason for my bad battery life. Here the blue part of the bar is download and the red part is upload.
And lastly "cpu usage" on mine these are all practically non-existent but if anything is using massive amounts of processing it will show up here.
I only found out about this the other day but it has helped my battery life substantially, I used to take it off charge in the morning and be down to around 60% by lunch time, now I'm at 98%. I did this by uninstalling any apps that used too much battery and that I didn't really use very much as well as the vampire apps that were running and syncing continuously in the background, I also reduced the frequency at which some of my services such as stocks, email and weather synced, and used it on a low brightness when possible.
This is my first android device and I can now happily use it without the fear of running out of battery before the days end
Wow, thanks andybut85, that was a very informative post!
If you download Spare Parts from the Market it gives you access to the same info - instead of 'dialing' to test mode.

My biggest is "Calendar" (54mins from Boot, compared to 1min for Andriod System!)
What Calendar could this be? Im syncing from Google Calendar, so will it be that? If so, wouldnt my email syncing show up as constantly on too?
Or could it be some other App that is making it run constantly?
Any help gratefully received.

Have a look for "Total in all time" with mine the calendar is roughly half that of android system, it could be that recently your calendar has had to sync for a long time, this could be a one off or if it's still high for the total time it could be a deeper problem. You could also try rebooting and seeing if it occurs again.

I'm still having problems with battery drain.
My Desire will not last a day
Installed Juiceplotter to find out when and why my battery drops so fast.
See attached image.
The battery drains very fast when i USE the phone, so when the screen is on. (20% in one hour)
I have two push email account activated, one with the HTC Exchange, and one with TouchDown.
But that doesn't explain the drops when phone is active.
Anyone else having this kind of batterydrain ?
I have positive "story" about battery too. Im on second charging. Saturday at 1:00 Im unplug it from charger and now 34h later Im on 7/10 battery.
Im make few calls(cca. 10 calls long 1-3min), few times(cca. 3-5x) check emails accounts(4 pop3 email accountes), quick test sygic navigation, little search on market(install calendar widget and some other app), and play few levels of Teeter...
3G is turned ON
GPS, WIFI is turned OFF
Also automatic sync is for most things disabled or setup to sync 1x per day...
Hmm Can't say I'm impressed by my battery life... it dropped 20% overnight..
I''ll keep an eye out on what's running and see if i can fine tune, but turning things off seems to be a bit pointless as it is made for use not just sit on a desk being pretty.

Kef

yep, that sounds highly plausible. Bad or weak connections to the network (especially mobile internet connections) will really drain a battery as the phone needs to use more power to maintain adequate connection strength.
you can check your signal strength in the "settings / network strength" section. I notice in good 3G areas my connection is -95dBm or higher. At work (which is in some sort of black spot in Dublin) I only get EDGE connection and my signal strength is about -80 to -85dBm. I bet this makes a big difference to battery life, especially if I try browsing or data connection.
my signal strength at work is -91 dbm...
i'm guessing bigger numbers are worse?

Hey everyone, last weekend I unrooted and wiped my phone, went back to factory settings, rerooted and installed CM6.1 RC2. I've been enjoying it so far (because I hate Sense UI) but I've got a couple of questions that need answered. Hopefully you all can help me.
CM6
1. Is there a setting to turn off always-on mobile data? I cannot find it.
2. For some odd reason, I cannot turn on bluetooth. I've not had a problem with turning on bluetooth with any other rom. In fact, I remember testing bluetooth the night I installed CM6. Is this an issue with the phone or the rom?
3. No matter how much I turn off Auto-Sync, it turns back on. What is doing this?
Battery Life
1. On average, I get around 10-14 hours battery life a day, maybe a little more if I barely use my phone all day. I've heard a lot of people say that an ideal battery drain with the screen off should be 1-2%/hour, but mine will drain from 6% to even 10% in 40-50 minutes (EDIT: Currently 75% battery left, unplugged for 2hrs 30min, done nothing but use the browser for 5 minutes, download something, and install it)! I use systempanel and spareparts to monitor which apps could possibly be doing this, but none look like they're eating up too much of the battery. I check Facebook 4-5 times a day, use the browser, and check Gmail. I don't use Google Talk. My screen brightness is around 30-40% and I have underclocked when the screen is off with setcpu. What is draining my battery so fast? It's a shame that there are so many cool things to do with this phone but I can't do them in fear of my battery dying before the end of the day
Sorry, that last question was long, but I did not want 2 separate posts. Thanks guys, I hope you can help!

1. no. you could however turn data roaming off or use a program to accomplish this such as "tasker"
2. what do you mean you cant turn it on? what does it do when you enable it? use the widget in your notification drop down.
3. turn off background data as well and that should fix your problem.
and as for you other question. 10-14hrs is perfectly normal for battery life on cm6.1. and fyi: its RC1. there is no RC2 for 6.1 as of yet

Ah thanks for correcting my mistake, and answering my questions. My battery life isn't terrible per se, but I guess I was asking more on how I could make it better (and if I had a rogue app/other battery eater), especially because I see people claiming anywhere from 20-40 hours with a few tweaks.
And regarding the bluetooth issue, it just won't turn on. The option grays out for a few seconds like it usually does when it's initializing, and then it doesn't turn on. The notification widget method does not work either.
Also, there's no other way to turn off auto-sync? I just think it would be a hassle having to turn background data back on everytime I want to use the market. I use JuiceDefender, too, could there possibly be a conflict between the app and my phone's settings?

Are you sure it was dead or you just had a sleep of death? If it truly was dead you definitely have something draining your battery during idle. I highly recommend you turn off your LTE antenna if you haven't already unless your using data intensive apps and you need it, such as surfing or netflix or something. Also, change your sync times to less often, I do every 15min. Sign out of google talk, use wifi when you can, adjust screen brightness, disable bluetooth. White backgrounds will eat your battery faster as well. What else am i forgetting.... Root will help if you can manage to, its incredibly easy especially with the new rootkit out, because you can load francos newest build which has increased my battery 2x, with 25% drain in the last 8.5 hours even with a 1/2 hr of whale tail last night. Also make sure your not running something stupid in your background thats eating your battery like a task killer or battery spy or something, those just rape your battery
If you turn on Google+ instant upload and it has thousands of pictures to upload that will kill your battery in a few hours. If your phone is staying awake because of Android OS then try turning off your GPS.

As noted in a lot threads on a lot of forums, there are some phones that have a problem with the Android OS and the "Keep Awake" time. There seems to be an issue with some phones not truly going to sleep when the power button is used to turn off the screen as opposed to letting the screen turn off automatically when the screen times out. This results in a very high time in the Settings/Battery/Android OS/Keep Awake menu.
In stock form and with every rom that I have installed, my "Keep Awake" time was always about 50-60% of my total battery time. If the phone had been off charger for 8 hours, I'd have 4-6 hours of Andorid OS "Keep Awake" time. This was true even if the phone had been in my pocket unused and seems to be exacerbated by my habit of turning the screen off manually with the power button every single time. I used to never let the screen timeout.
There seems to be two "fixes" according to Franco (of kernel fame). One concerns the camera. Seems the camera is started and then turned off during startup. But in so doing, it leaves a sensor active and this prevents the phone from actually going to sleep. So he recommends starting and using the back button to go back to the home screen. The other is DRM Protected Content. He recommends this be disabled or frozen. A third, that I don't believe I recall seeing him recommend but that I have seen on his thread at XDA (down for blackout right now) is to disable Maps.
I have done all three of those and my Keep Awake time has gone from 40-50% of my total battery time down to a few percentage points. I mean if I don't use my phone it will now show less than a minute of Keep Awake time per hour.
Good luck
My VZW nexus can idle with moderate use on constant LTE and get 15 hours with out issue. Hell I have even gotten more so check google+ as suggested. If it went dead on idle with nothing running constantly to cause it than I would say your phone and/or battery is defective

Ive been getting good battery life, despite my awake time being around 6-8 hours at the end of a charge. I tried the camera close but that never helped, I've just disabled DRM though. Also, GPS locator has been associated with this, which is probably what you meant by "maps". I just turn off my location unless i need it for navigation in location settings
how do you disable drm? and what exactly is it?

It has to do with digitally protected files, music, etc. One time I went home screen/menu/settings/apps/all/drm/disable. The last time I did it from Titanium and pressed the freeze button for that app.
Good luck.
BTW, both actions can be reversed.
Hey XDA friends. I got the Verizon HTC One a few weeks ago and battery life started out fantastic. When I put away to go to sleep it only lost 7% all night with GPS on and wifi on and all that and I was astonished. However as time went on I found those results kept getting worse and worse until I was draining 30% in a night. I went and uninstalled battery guru and now I only drain 12% a night. Some nights however I still lose 20% in a night with sleep mode on. How do I check what keeps waking my phone up and draining my battery. I'm afraid this will affect my phone's battery in the long run. I will start disabling GPS at night but I wish I still had that 7% in a night. How do I check what is messing with my phone???

go to settings/power/usage. this will tell you which app is using the most of you battery. also you should never have gps on while youre sleeping. you might also want to turn off auto-sync and then re-enable it after you wake up. you can create a widget to do just that. if you need help with that, just let me know.
Turn data Wi-Fi and gps off lol.... You are asleep

Do you use blinkfeed, that will kill your battery pretty fast. Even if you don't think you are using it, go check and see if it's syncing anything in the settings. I thought mine was turned off, but then I logged into facebook (turned sync off in facebook), later I found that blinkfeed was syncing it anyway w/out my knowledge.

You can go into settings and make sure everything is unchecked. Mine had several checked by default and it was draining battery.

Update: Battery only drained 10% last night with GPS off, Blinkfeed never updates on its own and all social networks are checked off (I don't like my social networks on Blinkfeed) other than that though everything seems to be in check. If anyone else has anyway to improve that 10% let me know (by the way the 10% was drained during 9 hours of constant sleep I went from 77 to 67)

Really, 1% per hour on standby with cellular radios on is pretty acceptable. Depending on signal strength, the radio could be pulling that just to maintain a connection to the tower.
Thanks everyone!
With GPS off, Sleep mode on, and NO BATTERY HELPER APPS (Battery guru was diminishing my battery life) I got a record breaking (for me) 4% loss in battery life during my 8 hour night's sleep, not bad if I do say so myself, after that my battery has been a lot better. I wish Verizon would give us HTC's battery saving software back but let's not ask too much of Verizon or they might give us timely updates.

Glad to hear this!!
those battery saving apps are so pointless IMHO, it's just another app and if coded incorrectly will do exactly what it did to you, destroy your battery that is working fine. very happy you can now enjoy your phone the way was designed to be!

Hey..I had the same problem so...first download wakelock detector from play store..after installing jus use your phone like as usual..after 4 to 5 hrs or right before you charge your phone, open the wakelock app and check what's waking up your phone during sleep..for everyone it seems the battery is drained by Google services ..the main culprit being the location services.. so switch off the location services in settings..and also in Google maps, go into setting and then into Google location settings and make sure location reporting and location history are disabled, make sure they are unchecked.. that's it..restart the phone..fully charge it and test it out ..and DON'T use any battery saving apps ..and also uninstall wakelocker app after your battery life is back to normal..I'm an average user and I unplug around 9 in da morning and when I come home around 6, I still have 65% left..I don use facebook .. heard even facebook app is major battery drainer....you jus have to tweak and play with settings till you find your desired battery life expectancy cos everyone uses their phone differently..and we all have different apps so the main thing is to find out what's eating the phone battery most...I'm just pleased with my decision in picking HTC ONE over galaxy S4
similar problem here....google services is killing my battery (relatively). location is part of it, but google hangouts is also going crazy (watchdog alerts me to excessive usage....over 50%, but hangouts was at 100%)
i was spoiled on my g-nex, where i left wifi, bluetooth, and GPS on 24/7 and could easily go 24 hours. now i'm lucky to get 12 (with about 1 hour of screen on time).
I'm hoping things will sort out, device is only about a week old, but google optimized location usage (iirc) such that it isn't supposed to constantly ping and kill battery. we shall see, i guess.
I'm not sure what the problem could be but I'm just gonna say that yesterday I got around 18 hours of battery life with over 5 hours screen on time which I consider awesome battery life.
I'm stock, so it's definitely possible to get good battery life.
10 percent overnight? Thats not that great but not horrible. My dna is running carbon (android 4.3) I use tasker to turn off autosync and data/wifi and put it on silent at whatever set time I make it. My phone drains about 5 percent max overnight, usually a lot less.

you can turn off updates in facebook and its not bad, but yeah if you have autoupdate on, it can kill the battery.
as far as the OP, I don't get why you don't charge you phone while you are sleeping. Seems like the perfect time.
Turning GPS off shouldn't affect your battery life. If you're not using your phone, the phone isn't going to use the GPS for anything. So it shouldn't be using your battery. The culprit is usually an app that is wakelocking your phone. So you need to find which app it is that constantly wakes your phone from deep sleep. Turning off autosync would help a bit if you are really paranoid. The big thing that hurts our battery when the screen is off, is the LTE radio, but most people are connected to WiFi when they sleep so it's not a big deal.
Just an FYI, turning off GPS has been ineffective since 2.2 Froyo. When Gingerbread 2.3 was released like 2+ years ago, it allowed for the GPS to only be used when an app called for it to be used. Otherwise GPS will not do anything unless you pull up an app that calls it to do something.
I am suprised, there still is no battery life thread.
People must be very happy with their battery lifes or nobody is buying this tablet
I do have one big issue with battery life.
WIFI is the biggest battery hog, using 2-3 times more battery than the screen.
For 3 hours WIFI roughly 1400mAh.
So I only manage like 5 hours of SOT.
Btw. I have set WIFI to be disabled, when the screen is off.
Any suggestions?
I haven't had mine off charge long enough to really be able to comment about this yet but I can't complain with it so far.
Mine seems good so far. Had one freeze as you can see. 33% left.

Still, I think it is strange (as seen in your screen shots), that WIFI accounts for almost half of your battery usage. And 5+ hours SOT is only 6%?
Could you be so kind and post the screen for wifi too, so we can see the "computed power use"?
When looking at my phone, wifi is at 52 mAh power use over an 18 hour period, on this tablet it is 2700 mAh for 10 hours.
An alarming discrepancy.
Or am I missing something?

Here you go. I'm guessing screen is only 6% because the tablet has been up now for 4 days, so 6 hours is a small portion of the activity.

I really don't know. You may be right.
I guess the high wifi in battery stats is a reporting error / miscalculation. I have wiped the cache partition in recovery (to fix my ambient light sensor) and ever since wifi is at the bottom of my battery list.
And I did not get any better SOT, so there could not have been any real battery drain from wifi even when it held the top spot in the stats.
Still disappointed with only 4-5h SOT.
Thanks everybody for helping out.

my understanding of how android has utilized the wifi sleep policy is that its best to leave wifi always on when sleep. It will use more battery to reconnect to the wifi network when it is woken up and disconnect when sleeping.
Any sources to support your theory? I'd like to read up on it more.
Info I've always followed. This is from 2011 as well:
"This tip is one that seems counter-intuitive, but you can save a lot of wear and tear on your Android phone's battery if you tell it to keep the Wifi radio turned on and connected while the phone is sleeping. Your phone needs a lot of juice to keep pinging those cell towers, and even more to transmit data to and from them. Wifi radios use much less power because of their design, and they don't have to keep searching for a better access point. It's the way cellular data communication was designed, and it's a necessary evil.
But what if you're spending all day (or all evening) in one place, connected to Wifi? If you tell your phone to shut off Wifi when idle, it bounces back to cellular data (be it 2G, 3G, or 4G) and starts sucking down the electrons again when the screen shuts off. That's no good, and easy to fix:
Open the advanced Wifi settings by pressing the menu button, then Settings, Wireless & networks, Wi-Fi settings, and tapping the menu button again. You'll have a choice to either Scan, or go Advanced -- go Advanced.
Tap the Wi-Fi sleep policy entry, and you'll get a pop up dialog with the choices you see in the picture above. Choose Never.
Now even when your phone goes into standby mode, you'll stay connected to Wifi and be able to get mail and messages without turning the cell radio back on and trouncing your battery life. And for the times when you're not in an area with a Wifi connection, just shut Wifi off, either through the menu or with a handy toggle widget. Your battery will thank you for it."

I know that leaving WiFi on runs your battery down on any device when its connected and it takes all of 2-3 seconds to connect. No reason to leave it on full time when your not using it. Also, the device is continuously checking and sending small amounts of data to maintain that connection.
Were talking about the pixel here and not a cellular device.
Pretty happy with the C.
I haven't really payed attention to how long this device lasts, I use it pretty casually so it lasts me up to a week. I have used it to stream movies and it has lasted me the whole day (8 hours) watching movies with about 30% left. Compared to other tablets I've had including the nexus 9 this one blows them all away. My old nexus 9 would die after a few episodes (about an hour)

No, just WiFi, don't have a keyboard.
As a heads up, there appears to be a WiFi issue with MM itself. I'm seeing the same issue on my Nexus 7 2013 running a MM ROM, and I found a thread online talking about it...maybe from the Android Central forums or something, I can't remember now. People seem to be unsure as to whether or not WiFi is actually causing a battery drain, or if it's just reporting incorrectly. But at least on my N7, the battery can drop 40-50% in one day while on standby, and when I have WiFi set to Off when it's sleeping. And I used to get DAYS of standby time before going to MM.
Edit: Here's an XDA thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guys-call-wifi-battery-drain-6-0-t3219870
I had the same issue with WiFi battery bug on the nexus 5. Fixed it via router by turning off the auto disconnect (the option where router decides if a device can connect based on signal strength) on both 2ghz and 5ghz. After this the Wifi went back down to the bottom of the battery list. Long shot, and most likely not even related, but hope it helps anyone.
On a Asus rt router.
