[Q]Root/Unroot - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive been through the forum and i want some input. I would like to root.my play but im not sure which method.to use. What I want is to get n option to unroot. Im running 2.3.3, R800i. There was this option to downgrade frst to 2.3.2 and use Gingerbreak but that seem to to have a clear unroot path. And there's the doomlords easy root. Can anyone point me to th right direction?

Go with Doomlord's Easy Root. In that thread, found here, when you scroll down through the instructions, he has also provided an Unrooting method for use ONLY if you use his method to root to begin with.

I understand that rooting voids the warranty so just in case I need to use that warranty I can just unroot the device. Im not sure though if they'll know if the device was rooted even if you unroot it.

Something tells me Im gonna go with this method. Question though, would I still be able to get the official upgrade to ICS if ever sony releases one next year?
Also, any idea where I can get the adb drivers for the Xperia Play?

Sony will be releasing Ice cream sandwich (They released an alpha build already) and yeah you will be able to upgrade (Pretty sure of it)

Factory unlocked Neo with root getting ICS?
guys, but what about this situation? (don't be surprised at my possibly noob questions)
I bought my Neo unlocked, I rooted it some time ago, but now I'm curious about the ICS update..will i have to unroot to do the update safely? I didn't delete any of the junk/unnecessary apps, i just froze them..so, I've been reading across different threads dealing with updates for rooted phones, and it seems that I'm gonna have to have to unfreeze the apps, unroot and then do the update via PC and not OTA..is that right?
what I would like to know is this: is it possible for me to uninstall all the unnecessary apps and then upgrade to ICS? I would uninstall only a few apps such as the chinese and japanese (POBox) keyboard, News & Weather, Office Suite, and probably just a few more minor ones..
Some say I can both keep root and upgrade to ICS without any problems but I read in many threads that I shouldn't do that, especially if I uninstalled any pre-installed apps..

Rooting Verizon Xperia Play

I'm deciding whether or not I should buy this phone or not depending on if I can root it.
I'm very confused with all the different versions of rooting instructions for the various types of Plays so if someone can point me in the right direction.
All I want to be able to do when rooted (if it's possible) is to remove bloatware and wireless tether.
Thanks in advance.
Sent using Tapatalk
You can root the Verizon Xperia Play (R800x) via [HOW-TO] Root Phones w/ Android v2.2.x-2.3.x (zergRush Method) as long as you update to v2.3.3.
I used the step by step version and rooted mine before the 1 click version existed.
Just buy an unlocked gsm phone there is more support for them and not so much if a pain in the ass.

Thanks for the information. Is it pretty easy to update to 2.3.3?
Sent using Tapatalk
Also, does it still allow for wireless tether for root app to work?
Sent using Tapatalk
It should. Use the latest version, set up WPA2 encryption and select "Nexus One (GSM)" as your device and it should work. Barnacle Tether works without any special configuring required, albeit it is only ad-hoc, but enough for tethering PCs.

I just said 'yes' when my phone asked me if I wanted to update. Verizon has pushed out that update out so at most you have to 'check for updates' and then say 'yes'.
Keep in mind, that on verizon there is no free method to unlock the bootloader, and that there are precious few custom roms that even work with it. The verizon version of this phone is practically crippled compared to other versions. I know you said you wouldn't be doing any custom roms, but I used to say the same thing myself back when I had the Original Moto Droid. After I had root, I lasted about 3 days before I was looking for custom roms to put on it.
Hey, thanks everyone for helping me out.
It sounds fairly easy to root seems like. My only other concern is if I root now and ice cream sandwich comes out next year, will I be able to update?

Yes. So long as you reinstall any apps you may have removed.
Also people, understand that not all of us have a choice of going with a GSM phone, hence us getting the 800x.

Issues Rooting with Superoneclick

Hi, I have tried rooting about 20 times (not even kidding), and almost every time it gets stuck on step #7. I have installed drivers from LG and have phone in debugging mode. (I tried doomlord, but it won't recognize my Nitro) Does anyone have any advice to help me root my Nitro?
*Mods, feel free to move this to the rooting section, it just wouldn't let me post in there*
Try rooting it the way they root the optimus. That's what I did and it worked fine.

Did you use the latest SuperOneClick 2.3.3 for rooting your device? I can confirm it works with LG LU6200...

If this isn't working for you, this should:

(its working in ADB mode, make sure your device is in USB debugging mode and connected to your PC)
Good luck!

Use SuperOneClick v.2.3.2 and not 2.3.3. The latest version don't want to root our Nitro. I can't understand why, but 2.3.2 version root very well.

Remove the SD card( or unmount it), i got the same problem here and it thats what worked
What worked for me was installing the Android SDK package.
I was hanging at step #7 as well and after installing the package it went through.

problems rooting too!
So this being my first post and all please dont freak. I searched as best I could to find the proper thread to ask this and this seemed like the best option. So here it goes.
I myself tried rooting my phone with Superoneclick and after numerous attempts I failed miserably. So I tried Doomlord's rooting method. I thought I had figured it out because at the end it said "OK!" and it even rebooted my phone but when I tried to DL Titanium backup and busybox it said it could not gain root access. My question is, first would it be safe to attempt the root process again, or if not any ideas on what I might have done wrong and maybe a solution to fix it?
Thanks again
P.S dear Mod if this was the inappropriate place to post this I apologize in advance.
i would download the superuser app and see if tibu finds root
also, there should be no prob running the rooting app again if you choose to, if you are rooted already it should return a *already rooted* message.
So I tried dl superuser and that did nothing. I even did a master reset maybe thinking that I might of changed a setting I want suppose to, and even that didn't work. Like I said I can't get SOC past step 7 and I've tried all the tips I read on here to get past that problem but nothing. Doomlords looks like it worked and it reboots my phone but still nothing. I would really truly appreciate any help!
thanks again

Apples and oranges. The two programs used to install custom recovery on the Aria utilize exploits in the HBOOT, which is something only HTC devices have.
What software version do you have on your device? (Look in Settings > About Phone > Software version)
I'm having the same situation. Everything I've read says that if you did the security update without root already then you can't root now. I would love for some one to prove me wrong and show me a way. IM running 2.3.5 v10j with kernel 2.6.35.11.

You have the recent update installed which makes it impossible to root the device. There are still methods to get the device rooted but it is not simple and basically involves this process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488
I would urge you to make sure you know what you're doing before attempting this though.
I had the above problem with not being able to root my phone due to the software version i had. I had to use the "unbricking guide" and after some challenges i was able to restore the phone to stock with root. It is risky, but at this moment im not sure theres any other way to do it, unless someone with programming skills can find an alternate method to go back to a previous version of the software without resetting or unbricking the entire phone.

I herad that can destroy your phone easier
Have you tried with the Zurgresh method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 It's very simple indeed.
P.S. Fasboot never bricked my phone and I have used it lot of times!
from what ive heard you cant root .62, .69 firmware or above, you need to downgrade or flash doomkernel which is prerooted
there is another method which involves flashing rootxperia.zip from cwm by booting binary's recovery, but i don't know it that will work
Even though I flashed my phone from instruction, I am new to the lock bootloader idea. Is it possible to use fastboot while the bootloader is locked?

You don't need Fastboot to use the script I posted and and your bootloader doesn't have to be unlocked.
Try the DooMLord Easy Rooting toolkit....google it...or search here in the forums....
Make sure you're not on the latest .62 or higher firmware, download doomlords zergrush one-click, follow the instructions in the thread for it. Simple.
Here, since you probably didn't search the forums properly first -_- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
And for crying out loud you DO NOT need fastboot to root, or flash (stock) roms with flashtool!!
I'm getting really annoyed with ignorant people who spread false information. If you don't know what you're talking about, if you're new to xda and can barely do things yourself, don't try to give people advice!
I can't even count how many threads where we had to clear up false info about rooting, fastboot, flashing etc. because some new guy thought he was an expert and gave incorrect info to other new members.
Why do I care so much, and why bother ranting you may ask? It's simple, really. False information leads to mistakes that can leave a poor, unsuspecting newbie with a nice brick instead of a working phone.
Make sense? I should hope so. And for the love of God read the rules before you post! They clearly state to SEARCH the forums before posting, yet it seems nobody does. I'm pretty sure the forum tells you to read them when you sign up, and agree to the terms of use..

YOu can use flashtool, doesn't mean you will do some hardcore flashing.
The flashtool has the option to apply the zergrush method to root and is very easy to use. You can even install a more trustable busybox (1.19) for other rootie candies. (Even tought I update to 1.19.4)
But first thing I made when I bought is to unlock the bootloader, maybe don't work for you, but will NOT destroy your phone in case of failure.

[Q] Current Root Process?

I have an Xperia Play (R800x) laying around that I wanted to play around with. It's got version 2.3.4, so it looks like I can't use the zergrush method to root it, and the bootloader unlock process from Sony won't work with my device.
Is there another current rooting process? I've looked around but I'm not seeing anytihng other than paying someone else to unlock my bootloader.

Did you tried to root with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219711
You can always downgrade to .42 firmware and root it with zergrush.
It's easier to root it with custom kernel (unlocked bootloader), but you can do it even without unlocking your bootloader.
