Phone runs hot when playing games? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone have this condition?
It gets warm with heavy internet usage. But quite hot when playing games.
I was playing 'great little war game' for around 10 minutes then I felt on upper right corner (behind front camera) quite hot. I checked the battery temp it was 43°C. But as soon as I quit playing the temp back to normal.
Just asking if anyone experience the same, is it normal?

Don't quote me as I am not an authority on the subject but usually when a certain spot on a phone starts to heat up, it's easy to assume that the CPU is starting to get hot.
Games are CPU intensive tasks so you will see a specific spot where the CPU is likely to be located getting hot. There isn't much to remedy it since phones don't have a cooling system built in.
My only suggestion would be to try and hold it as such so that you are not directly touching the spot and try taking breaks when you get worried about the phone getting TOO hot.

Most phones will run hot when playing games

I forget what game it was but my iPad 2 was cooking when my wife was playing a game on it recently. It's just the way it goes.

Processor gets hot

I'm concerned that the phone gets too hot when playing games.
Sometimes just browsing the internet causes a warm spot.
The hot spot occurs on the top corner on the left side.
I'm wondering if the phone is going to last 18 months if it goes through this cycle on a weekly basis.
What do you think?

the problem is that some of these games can be a bit demanding and considering this GN uses a Omap 4460 CPU it's no wonder that it's struggling.
it's a shame this phone didn't get one of the newer Omap 5 series.

Not so hot mate... you havent owned a GS2 to witness the real hotness
Welcome to Smartphones, all of them get warm or hot when playing games on them. If you tax the phone really hard it will get warm/hot as well. Regardless of what CPU they have.
It will last perfectly fine, dont worry about it. Think of it as a added bonus, a hand warmer.

or if you're female and it's that time of the month(cramps), it doubles as a heating pad for that area.

[Q] Is your Galaxy Nexus overheating too?

The back of my phone is really heating up with only moderate use. Only a few minutes of youtube or angry birds will get the phone hot. The hot spot is only on the right side of the rear camera, or the backside of the front camera, however you wanna see it
Has anyone had the same problem?
My phone gets warm playing wind up knight. I haven't experienced hot yet.

when i've been using mine for a while and then make a call it is rather warm around the earpiece, dunno if thats normal or not.
Your thread title implies the phone is having a problem (ie. crashing, stuttering, FC) getting warm isn't really 'overheating' many mobile devices get pretty darn warm during intensive activities.
Are you experiencing a problem?
I just used my nexus as a wifi tether for my laptop for 3 hours, while charging off a usb cable and usually I get high temperatures usually when doing this with other phones, however nexus was cool to the touch after all this... haven't noticed much heat ever with this phone.... however I'm not a big gamer either.
Facing the front of the screen, the top right corner in an L shape seems to heat up quite a bit - from something medium intensive like web browsing.

No the title does not imply crashing of stuttering. If I did it would have the word 'crashing' or 'stuttering' in it.The title implies exactly what I'm getting. The phone overheat strongly in one spot , from very normal use. Not intensive tasks.
I haven't had FCs or anything like that so far. But it does get pretty hot. It is alarming if I may say.

I have a feeling there is something in that corner that is dissipating the heat. I have a battery temp monitor and when it was really hot in that corner, my battery temp was 40C (30C seems to be normal idle temp) - but the center of the phone where the actual battery is doesn't feel hot.
So I'm assuming the heat is drawn to that corner.
Another thing I noticed (comparing to my previous phone) is that even though it got hot, it cools fast as well.
I get the same issue as well. But it wasnt particularly alarming since my Captivate, Infuse, and Skyrocket did the exact same thing. I have used the captivate and infuse for a long time now. The captivate was purchasd on launch day last year and has been passed down to my girlfriend, infuse is still being used daily by me since launch day as well, and the skyrocket (least used phone) was JUST sold for the funds to get my new gnexus. All of these phones have the same issue. I just figured Samsung phones get warm but thats it.
My phone is fine. I don't even get warm unless playing a 3d game. Charging is unusually cool. And I haven't even felt warmth from heavy hspa use.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
to be honest...mine does seem to be getting rather excessively warm at the top right on both the front and back side...it's around where the RAM chip is on the PCB or could be around the CPU (which is more central but *shrug*). I cant think it's normal since i've never had a warm ear when i've been making a call with any phone i've had before!

My GN can be "very" warm at the back where the rear camera is. By playing 720p/1080p video files. Heavy HW decoding I believe.
So there is something. Can't believe no tech news site reported this before. Giving how quickly everyone rushed out to point a flaw the GN.
Has anyone contacted any Samsung rep on twitter or something? Who do we raise our concerns to?
I'm wondering if i should get my phone returned as DOA (since i need to do that by monday) with the getting quite hot and sleep of death and random reboots :|
i havent owned a high end phone like this though, and it's personally my first android phone (other people in the household have had one that i've mucked about with) so i dont actually know what to expect from it really...
I watched a netflix movie over mhl. The nexus got fairly warm. Still no overheating issues or reboots for me.

There is nothing wrong with it....... LOL "overheating" denotes your phone is crashing, stuttering, melting, burning or warning you that its hot....ect. So far nobody in this thread has this issue sooooo..... If the device is functioning properly then its not "overheating" as your thread title suggests. You should have put....does your phone get warm? Yes, just like computer processors they must get rid of the heat somehow this one dissipates it in the back just like most other phones.

except...the front is getting rather warm too. Doing simple things. Is that normal? Probably not. And excess heat + displays = bad. Also rather uncomfortable when you're making a call...if people use phones for calls anymore

[Q] Heating Problem

The top portion of my phone gets headed up. I am facing this problem from last one week.
Initially my phone used to stay cool even if I played games for hours. But now the top portion gets heated in just 5-10 mins if I play games.
Is this normal??
How hot it is?
since you said it did not heat up before this it's probably an issue you have to solve.
since the day I started using Samsung phones I never experienced during games.Only when charging
Contact Samsung and see what's their view on this.

The processor is probably located at the upper part of the phone.
After some time playing games my top part is getting a bit warm. My temperature is not that bad, nothing to worry about.
Stuffing a quad core (!) processor into a several mm thin phone will cause heat. Nothing to see here, just doing it's job.
Not experienced heating issue at all, the might be faulty.
I have had 2 not had this proble might be worth getting replacement.

If it gets hot without doing anything, only then it can be faulty or else while using it hard is understand able. My s2 used to get hot from top, s3 from bottom and now note 2 from top while playing hd games. Not a concern for me as it gets back to normal very soon

I suppose it depends on the severity of heat and what apps or functions are running. If it's gaming for long periods then perhaps phone may get heated but like I said I haven't experienced this myself.
The only time I've noticed my phone get hot is when it's been in my trouser pocket...but then that's a pretty hot region anyway.
I switched off quick glance about an hour ago. The dim red light of the sensor has turned off now. Played a game for about half an hour with no heating problem.
I think it was the quick glance which was causing the problem. I also removed open s voice via home key.
Can someone please confirm whether quick glance can cause this problem.
36º it's a very usual temperature, it's not dangerous. If you want, you can downclock your CPU for a lower temperature.
are you using the original charger? or original battery?
Yes I am using original battery and charger. Now the temperature stays around 32 C while playing games.

I was playing zombiewood and my note 2 was peaking at 37c.
I think it was starting to affect the game a bit as the left joystick over the hot part would sometimes get unresponsive. Might be coincidence tho.

Does tablet get warm?

Does ur tablet get warm after awhile of using it? Maybe after viewing videos or just using it for a bit?
Mine does. Not extremely hot like the first gen nexus, but decently warm on the top ride side (if holding portrait)

Mine gets warm sometimes when I play ingress. Sometimes during a video but usually videos don't warm it.
Only time mine has ever gotten hot was when I tried to play Runescape on it lmfao other than that it's been warm at best, and that's rarely.
Mine gets quite hot when I play Modern combat or nova 3 or anything like that. Other then that it gets warm.
Only playing graphics-heavy games.
Videos it gets a little warm, but nothing bothersome.
Browsing not really noticeable.
Only notice when using things with a lot of video and graphics. Not as hot as older Nexus 7 and no where near as hot as a Galaxy S3. Seems better quality this time.
I was running Hangouts video chat with the gf and my tablet got so hot after ~15 min it shut off.
I have no had any heat issues so far and I mostly use my tablet for heavy gaming. Slightly warm to the touch after long gaming sessions maybe but certainly not as warm as many other devices after much shorter gaming sessions.
top right in portrait gets warm, not quite hot, when playing games like riptide gp 2

Mine gets hot, but not scarily so, and not nearly as hot as my Galaxy Nexus sometimes gets (like when playing music and using Google Navigation in my car).

Mine got hot during skype, before I almost threw the tablet across the room because the mic barely works and the front camera is at like 20x zoom during Skype. Now, overclocked to 1.7ghz, it doesn't really get warm during browsing the web, battery temp is usually around 27-29c.

[Q] Heat issue when playing Minecraft

Just recently purchased the new Nexus 7 and one thing that is bothering me is the heat from the top(in portrait mode). Especially when playing Minecraft. This heat starts pretty quick(about 5 minutes). I have the previous Nexus 7 but that does not feel as hot when playing Minecraft. I realize the new Nexus 7 has better graphics and a powerful CPU which maybe produces more heat but its getting warm to the point where I can almost say its hot. Its not just the back getting hot either. The glass is also pretty hot and very uncomfortable. Is anybody else experiencing this?
Same problem with me. When i use to play heavy game like NFS most wantes game, my htc sensation get hotter
Sent from my HTC Sensation using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
That's a good sign as you know the heat is being distributed effectively away from the internals. I would be worried if my device felt cold during gameplay. Watch a teardown of new Nexus and you will see that the motherboard was moved to the top from the left side of the previous Nexus.
