This is a direct recreation of an experiment performed by gogol on April of 2010. Although it is well known that a black background uses less power on AMOLED screens, I wanted to establish actual figures for the Galaxy Nexus.
Testing Condition:
- Fresh boot on 4.0.2 yakju Galaxy Nexus
- Wifi OFF
- Mobile network OFF
- GPS OFF
- Bluetooth OFF
- Screen at home screen with default icon placement(no clock widget)
(1) At maximum brightness, screen on for 15 minutes
- Pure black wallpaper will consume about 2% (from 80% down to 78%)
- Galaxy Nexus wavy blue wallpaper will consume about 4% (from 77% down to 73%)
(2) At brightness = 20+%, screen on for 15 minutes
- Pure black wallpaper will consume about 1% (from 72% down to 71%)
- Galaxy Nexus wavy blue wallpaper will consume about 2% (from 69% down to 67%)

Although no one is going to stare at a wallpaper for 15 minutes straight, over time, it should add up to fairly decent savings with normal use. I really was surprised by the power usage. Despite its size, the screen is pretty energy efficient.
those arent really reliable numbers given the error margins of the experiment (battery reading, ambient temp, etc)
have the screen on for 4 straight hours, and maybe we'll be talking

I was originally going to make it an hour long but the maximum sleep timer on stock ICS is 10 minutes and I didn't want to sit around tapping on the screen every 8 minutes I'll probably find an app or something and try it again overnight. Although not 100% accurate, it directly reflects previous experiments.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.
There was already someone else who tested black vs white in this forum. The results are bit surprising.

Not surprising at all.
1280x720 tiny little LEDs all want their own few µ-amps. Those that are switched on, that is. ^_^
I will try a pure black wallpaper and report back.
EDIT: Made a pure black 1280x720 wallpaper. Save anywhere on your device and "install" by viewing with the gallery app > select options.

Hi guys,
i did a search but have found nothing regarding this kind of problem.
My display shows some kind of pattern on plain colors.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16054199/screen.jpg
Its worst on grey and white, (certainly) not seen on a black screen, and its almost not visible on the highest screen brightness. But, its very distracting on everything below and also visible in pictures etc. if looked closely.
I come from a S2 which had not this effect. Is it a faulty screen or a normal effect of the pen tile matrix?
I see the same thing when my screen dims down before it goes to sleep.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Just before it goes into sleep mode? (which afaik is even darker than the darkest setting while it`s awake).
I clearly see it under medium backlight setting, the grey elements of the market are a place where i always see it.
hate to break it to you, but that's just how the screen is(especially when the brightness is turned down & on plain colors). i've had 2 Nexus' and both did the same, even the ones on display in my local verizon store are the same way.
Turn the brightness up and it will go away. It's a quirk of the screen technology.
Allright, so i have to live with that... Thanks for your answers!
Is it possible to edit the levels of the automatic screen brightness?

If you're rooted and have Clockworkmod you can use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1377410
Just make sure you meet the requirements and follow the directions in the thread. I have used this on a Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus and didn't have any issues, even though it is in the CDMA form.
I am not the dev of this mod, just passing along the info.
awesome, thanks a lot!
I wonder if there's some kind of deeper hidden meaning to the pattern, some kind of subliminal message jk

I find the dimmest screen toggle still too bright. I find it embarrassing to use in dark public spaces.
Is there a way to dim the screen even more?
Download the screen filter app from the play store. Literally puts a filter effect on the screen to make it appear darker making it much easier to use in the dark.
Yes its possible to take the screen much lower, but we have to edit the framework. Nobody had done this mod yet for some reason.
CM9 has the ability to change the screen lowest settings built in

+1. I use Screen Filter also, it's uber handy for reading at night when the light seems too bright. If you've got hardkeys like I had on my Desire, you can even turn them off.
i wrote a tutorial on how you can mod the frameworks apk. it's very easy and you can change the brightness levels to anything you want. here's the thread
screen filter only puts a transparent layer on the screen and messes with the colors. modding the frameworks will lower default brightness to any level you want. you can raise it too if you like.
Thanks for all the ideas. I went with the easiest one, Screen Filter.
AOKP also has an option to reduce screen brightness...

Great work, I've been wondering why nobody did this mod yet for the nexus. I made that same mod on my atrix, using the sgs2 thread as well. But I've been too lazy to do it for nexus.
The above mod is the best option. Screen filter doesn't achieve the same results. The above mod reduces power draw as well when on the lower brightness setting of 5 or so. Screen filter just hides the higher brightness but has same power draw.

That would be correct for back-lit screens. For the Galaxy Nexus screen, though, Screen Filter does help reducing power draw as a darker screen content = lower brightness.
I used to use SF for quite a while until I got fed up of it causing stutters to most animations. After thorough examination I concluded that the Nexus's GPU is the culprit. For some reason it just doesn't like multiple graphics being updated at once. Modding the overlay XML allows it to run at full speed.
Can anyone confirm the same reduced framerate issue?. It's also the reason why some ROMs include a setting to remove the navigation buttons glow. I tested with CM9 on the SGS2 and experienced none of the stutters in cases where the GN would. Another example: sliding between sections (comments, ralated, etc.) in YouTube is laggy iff the video is playing.

Agreed, GPU just isn't good enough. I hate the lag with the button glow animations on!
I use an app called root dim, it's really useful. Let's you use a brightness level of 1, which is really quite dim. Free, too.

Thanks for the tip, on the Galaxy Nexus it's possible to set the brightness to 0 by writing to /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness but the brightness is checked and reset to the minimum (default 10) every time the screen is turned on. I guess Root Dim works to the same effect so it runs as a system service. Still, it'd be an awesome addition for people who haven't bothered to mod.

Screen filter may reduce power. But amoled screens save power with lower brightness. There is no difference between lcd vs led on this issue. And modifying the framework to bring min brightness down to 5 rather than 15 saves much more power than screen filter. Its no contest. This isn't different from lcd in this case.

Yes we can write to that sysfs file, but it gets reset. The mod to the frameworks incorporates that backlight file so its now able to go down to 1, 2, 5, or whatever you want. It makes it now stock, so you are no longer capped at 10 (actually I think 15 is the cap I see). But that mod is just removing this cap and making it lower to whatever you want. Stock.
So no extra app is needed. No additional tweak. It now makes the stock brightness able to go down to 1 by itself whenever it needs.
I really dont understand why samsung uses black backgrounds with grey text as their default and only theme.
I dont know if anyone has mentioned it. but its rediculously terrible to read text on the note when you are outside this way.
Email is by far the worst. even with all battery and background savings off and brightness set to max its almost impossible to see the dark grey email list on a black background when you are outside. New emails dont have a color but are white... so its also impossbile to see if you have new emails when you are outside.
How in the hell could samsung came up with this theme. the blue and black first of all is very ugly and its far from user friendly.
Before my note 2 i had an One X from HTC. i changed to the note because of the very good battery usage time. The One X has white backgrounds for all menus, email and sms. wich makes it perfectly readable even outside. also new emails have a blue color while readed emails are black.
I dont understand why samsung has choosen this stupid color themes for their flagships.
And yes you can invert the colors. but its insane how the rest will look if you enable the inverted colors. Its just stupid!

Black colors use less battery.
It's ironic that you switched to Samsung because of the good battery time.
You really think thats ironic?
I think its ironic that HTC has removed the "screen on time" from the battery management tool as from update 4.1. because that way people cant see that their one X has a use time of less then 3 hours.
Also the Phone can heat up to about 60 degrees celcius when playing a game, in wich the screen gets so hot it starts to burn on your finger tips. battery drains from 100 to 0 in less then 30 minutes.
Well this irony is the reason i switched to the note 2. Now i get 8+ hours of use time or around 4 to 6 hours with a total of 24 hours standby.
How ironic you think it is... its allot better!
Black maybe less power consuming but the few minutes you use the email app is nothing compared to the hours you spend browsing the web with a white background. And yet i still can browse the internet for 6 hours on a charge.
So as smart as you think you are, i dont think this white background while reading a few emails will deplete your battery hours faster. But still its terrible anoying that email and sms is just unreadble outside. They should atleast add a function so people can choose for themselves wich background they prefer.
Its really not that strange i think!
Hi
In the web browser you can get black background with white text and then get incredible battery life even if you briwse a lot.
Go accessibilty option and activate the "reversed mode"
Enjoy.

The problem isn't with black screen, but the incredibly stupid grey color fonts though. If you're rooted, obviously flash away some good roms that settles it for you. Annoying but nothing you can't get rid of.
Have you tried negative screen mode when you're out?
You could try K-9 Mail to get rid of the grey font in the Samsung Mail app.
@sygys
I didn't want to provoke you. Cool down.
I have the opposite issue from most users that want the screen to dim very low. I am using the Galaxy Tab S as a kiosk and would like the default dim level to only go to 50 or 60%.
This seems like it should be a simple change of a file but I can't find anything that will help (No app or Google search). I looked in the Build.prop this was not in the file ro.lcd_min_brightness so I added it but it did not help.
I have not found a app that will help me set the minimum dim level they all need to be done by a button push I need this to be automatic.
As a kiosk the display will dim to 50% then when a user touches the screen the screen will go to 100% after 10 minutes it will dim back down again to 50%.
Thank you

CyanogenMod 11-2015101-Unoffical-nvertigo-changallwifi

Would the Xposed Module work to dim the screen to 50%?
I found this module Sense 6 Lockscreen Mods [KK] which talks about "Adjust Background Dimming"
Thanks
You might be better off with an lcd display, an oled display is not really suited to 100% brightness for 10 minutes numerous times a day, even if the rest of the time it is at 50%, you card just asking for burn-in damage.

These are the unites we have on hand. I also have an attract screen so burn-in should not be too bad we had to deal with burn-in for years with the old style monitors. I need to lower the display screen to 50% because if it stays at 100% the unit gets too hot and the battery does not charges because heat is causing higher resistance.
Is there any way to set the minimum dim level? would Xposed work using the module Sense 6 Lockscreen Mod? I have been looking and can't seem to find the file(s) that set the minimum dim level.
Thank you
It`s a pity somebody could not make an app for you, try some android app write software, with millions of android apps out there it must be relatively easy to make them.
But keeping the tablet awake and the brightness at 50% until somebody touches the screen then boosting the brightness to 100% and keep the screen on till, no touches have been reported for the next 10 minutes and then reduce the screen brightness back to 50% and wait for the next input.

The brightness issue is the last thing I need to get working. I have an app that puts the tablet at fullscreen with no access to the systems nav and I have an app that will keep the screen on and will allow the system to go to sleep (set time in the sytems settings) but when it goes to sleep the dim is too dark and the tablet looks like it is off. All apps that I have found do not adjust the tablet minimum setting, thel y are all activated by some type of manual input.
Again any help or pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry but i am a bit brainless when it comes to things like that.
But i do have some advice, ask for an generic android app that will do what you want, not in the Samsung section, but in the general xda software/app development section wherever that is but their must be one, have a look though the xda main forum section, pm a mod and ask for directions.
The more specific to an brand and model the less help you will get, you want an general android app, that works on anything, not something that only works on the Samsung Tab S
Good Luck

Lying in bed last night I turned on Night Mode. I noticed when I pulled down the notification shade, the top portion was still dimly back lit, so I could see the camera cutout and the edges of the screen, no matter how much I dim the backlight.
Well tonight I fired up my Note 9, put it on Night Mode and pulled down the notification shade, and no matter how bright or dim I have the screen, the top part is BLACK. no light. You can't see where the screen ends and the frame begins.
This isn't a huge deal except for battery savings. When an AMOLED screen is true black, those prices shut off. But since the night mode on the N10+ isn't true black those pixels are still lit up and using power.
When viewing video in Netflix or YouTube the black bars are truly black, so I know the screen is capable showing true blacks, I'm just not sure why Sammy changed Night mode so it's no longer truly black.
I have just experienced the same thing. I have a note 9 as well to compare. I'm actually deeply disappointed. I also noticed screen mode only has 2 options... vivid and natural. Where as note 9 has 4 screen modes. I'm trying to figure things out to see if I can get it to be true black.
It's probably normal since it's a night mode and not a black mode ; in which you wouldn't it to make your screen showing heavy contrasted differences that actually made more eye fatigue than the light one.
Maybe I'll finally like this mode on this new phone.

No I understand it's a "Night mode" but I'm comparing it to the Note 9 and Note 8 Night mode where it became a true black. And I ran it in Night mode almost 24/7 for some battery savings as well. Well that doesn't work if Night Mode is just a dark grey rather than a true black.
And I'm not sure how true black and contrast made for more eye fatigue? Have you never watched a 4K movie? The whole point of high def is high contrast with true deep blacks, bright whites, and bright colors.
I also noticed on the quick access home screen in Samsung Browser on dark mode, it's not longer a true black. Now if you turn on High Contrast mode in the browser settings, then the background is a true black, so that panel is capable of turning off the pixels and going true black. This means it was an obvious design choice.

Dark VS black doesn't make much difference battery wise on OLED screens (let me just find the test back and I'll update my post)
Because the notification panel and anywhere else that it matters contains mostly texts and it produce visual retina persistence (not sure if I translated well), plus it's more annoying to read and and eyes accommodate less than in light mode where everything is light too.
There's nothing to do with movies since it's dynamic and constantly changing from a lot of different colours while texts are more static (but going from dark to light scene still hurts)
I agree that it's absolutely a design choice, but in my opinion for the better.

I gotcha. Makes sense. I'd like to see some tests on black vs dark. I had always heard and though the battery savings was due to the pixels shutting off. It's why the AOD is black and not just dark.
Buts also weird. I'm replying to this direct from the Gmail notification of your reply. So it opened up the webpage in the webview. Well the top bar above the page that says reply to topic and has had the Gmail overflow button is true black. But the status bar right above it is dark grey.
I guess what bugs me most is it makes the camera cutout stick out, even in the dark. Because I look up an I see a true black for on a dark charcoal background. And I can see the screen edges. I preferred on the Note 9 where it all just blended away with the true black.
But yet, when I watch a movie, the status bar DOES turn off completely and you can't see the camera cutout. Just can't figure out the inconsistency.

It may be because apps got their own night mode colour settings embedded, while all One UI apps got theirs which are different.
Like, if for Google night mode is all black, their apps will just check about system UI night mode trigger and of its on, apply their own settings.
I can only find that reason for it to be such inconsistent.

I totally understand and agree ! Especially when you like what Samsung did with their UI

I just use a theme that's mostly black everywhere. No need for night mode..
One UI notification shade isn't actually black for any of the devices on the One UI. I had an S8+ before this and it looked black but if you take a screenshot and measure the color value, you'll see that it's not black. You can do the same thing on your Note 9. Take a screenshot and extract the color value. Or take a screenshot and then transfer that screenshot to the Note 10 and view it on the Note 10. I guarantee that the Note 9 screenshot of the notification shade will look like the Note 10 notification shade. Black will cause AMOLED smearing which isn't good look.

So I tried this. Set my Note 9 to Night Mode and took a screen shot. Sent it to my N10+. Guess what? The notification shade in my Note 9 screen shot is pure black when viewed on my N10+ screen.
So I did the opposite. Took a screen shot of N10+ notification shade and sent it to my Note 9, and it appears dark grey.
So I'm not saying you're WRONG, but this is proof that the notification shade on Night Mode on the Note 9 (and the Note 8) was SIGNIFICANTLY darker than the N10+. If they aren't true black, then they are so close at to be indistinguishable from it, whereas the N10+ is definitely lighter than black.
I also just used an app to do a color value sample on my screenshots. Note 9 notification shade is #00000. I believe that is true black?
See my attached screenshots. War Machine is Note 9 (The one with the true black notification shade) and the Darth Vader is the Note 10+ (the one with the dark grey notification shade)
To see what I'm talking about, you may need to turn brightness up on your phone or go in a dark room.
Screenshots of color picker showing Note 9 notification shade is #00000 (true black) and Note 10+ is #080808 (not true black).

I just use a theme that's mostly black everywhere. No need for night mode..

I tried this. The notification shade was still dark grey, not black.
Samsung doesn't use black on the N10, it's that simple. They use a form of grey that's fairly close to pure black, however. The avg person probably uses white themes, so I doubt many will take notice.

Look for a different theme. There are black ones. I'd post mine but I can't seem to post screenshots here.

It's all good. I fixed it with GoodLock. I have my stock theme and a true black notification shade again.
Thanks!!

Write back when you find a solution to make samsung browser black.cheers.
As Nastrahl pointed out it the pixels don't need to be completely off to save a lot of power. I was going for total black but since I adjust brightness manually a little bit of tint to the black looks nicer and makes it easier to gauge the brightness.
You can use the Good lock app Quickstar to make the pull down notification panel any color or darkness level you want. Mine is almost black with a hint of forest green.
My wallpaper is even darker with the same green tint.
When the brightness is too high the wallpaper's green tint is noticeable otherwise it looks black.
