[Q] OTA Update While Rooted - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Is this update really necessary. I'm on the just updated to the 2.0 Blazer ROM and still received the OTA update message so i just clicked it and i got the whole android exclamation mark but now the update is gone. It just seems like a pain to apply the OTA update so is it really necessary and with the info below how would i go about doing it. Really dont want to wipe my phone. Thanks in advance.
Baseband
S710.10 S.EG30
Kernel
2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EK02-CL704398

If you aren't having any issues you never have to update. However if you have problems like LOS, then you may have to get a newer rom. If you are on a custom rom, do not update with sprint, see if there is a newer version of your rom, or find a new one to flash. Although like I first was saying, "If it aint broke, don't fix it."

so its pretty much like an ota rom?

question about the new OTA update

Ok, I'm probably going to get flamed for this but...
I've been keeping up with the thread joeykrim started about how to gain root with the new v1.47.651.1 update. Then I saw the newest thread where they've been able to do it. Yet I've seen a bunch of v1.47.651.1 rooted downloads in the dev subthread, and a week ago or so, I had downloaded the rooted deodexed 1.47 rom, with the new radio, with the plan to flash it over. I was hesitant because I knew people were having problems with the new update. So for now I have Fresh's rom (which btw is awesome).
So I've finally put 2 and 2 together, and this is what I've discovered... Is the new update ITSELF, just the actual FILE, able to be rooted? aka, the update was downloaded to a computer, hacked, and then able to be flashed to a phone with no problems? And that would mean the only problems are for people who applied the OTA update or bought a new evo that already had the 1.47 update, correct?
sorry to be an idiot!
Correct .
Well, wait.lol the Rom you downloaded is basically an stock Rom with update, an entire image that will replace what you have. It is just rooted already.
But you are correct that it is only people who took the ota update or bought a new phone and the salesperson did the upgrade who must use the new method to root.
At least you posted in the right forum so you better not get flamed lol

ok, thanks!
yeah I just have the stock rooted 1.47 rom. I think I'll wait until some dev's get their hands on it and see what they release, before i flash it.
I am running my own variation of the deodex 1.47 that calkuin (sorry for the spelling if its wrong.) So its good to go. But I think there are a few that already have it incorporated such as damage control.
i think i also have that caulkin 1.47 version. do you like it? what kind of things do you like about it over the 1.32.651.6 version?
I just used it as a starting point for my Rom. I just wanted the update so i can actually logon to my WiFi router. The image you have is the stock image, so it still has all the Sprint apps on it and stuff.

NEW Firmware? 8/30/10

Just checking. I just went from MyFroYo6 to SlideM and I received a notification saying there is new firmware available.
Is this actually brand spankin' new firmware or was I not getting this notification because I was running MyFroYo6, Cyanogenmod, and Team Fenix?

No....You need to update to CR's OTA which is the latest..Slidemeroot is based off of a older version of the firmware.CR's OTA also has the newer radio(which may give better batt,signal,etc..)
I thought I had installed his OTA. Not the ROM but the essential files. Did I undo this by going back to SlideM?

If you wiped I would say so. But shouldn't if you just flashed a nandroid backup.
But, my wife is running SlidemeRoot5 and received the update notification. We allowed it to update and it didn't really do anything, and she didn't lose root. But as usual, yymv.

But you changed roms to an older ver, you still have the same radio but that roms is older. The tmo update server reads the phone as needing an update.
Right on! I was just revisiting the Sense apps. I missed the copy/paste feature and Dragon Dictation. Nandroided back to MyFroYo6 after getting a 281 benchmark score. (Yes, I also noticed the slowness myself.)
Thanks for the answers, y'all. Just saw Megadeth, by the way.

[Q] Wont Update to Froyo

Hi all,
I've been disconnected from the Epic community recently. Just the other day I found out about the official Froyo update but my phone has never notified me about this. Also, when I go into settings to check for updates, it tells me there is none.
Every tells me they are up to date; profile, firmware, and Android, but when I try to update the PRL it tells me I need to reset the radio. I have no idea what that means or if it's even relevant to why I cannot upgrade to 2.2.
How do I get my phone to update? I haven't been able to find anything in a search.
If it helps, my PRL version is 60676 and my firmware is 2.1-update 1.
Thanks for any help.
Go under development.. Everything is there. Sprint pulled the official update after people were having issues upgrading from ota. If u odin, root, and install the optimized custom roms, you won't regret it.

To be honest, after what I read today, I suggest just going this route:

After reading about Carrier IQ, I refuse to ever use anything official again.

[Q] OTA Software Update

I updated to JB yesterday with the OTA on T-mobile. I am rooted and used OTA root keeper to restore root. I went to change my build.prop file to change the display density. What I didn't do was use the new build.prop from JB. So I softbricked my phone. I restored to UVALH2 and was going to get the OTA's to go back to JB. When I click on "Software Update" it says I am up to date. I noticed that my baseband is still JB's.
The question here is, does software update go off of what is listed for the Baseband or the Build Number?
Solved
Haven't made too many posts where I need to update afterwards. I decided to reflash UVLH2 modem. Once back in phone I went to about device and tried to do the SW update. It prompted me for download.
So, from what I can tell here, OTA are based upon your radio version, to answer my own question. Good day!
Glad you got it figured out. All of that is covered in the Official Jelly Bean thread.
This one is closed. If anyone uses search (ya right jk) and this thread comes up, just go to the above thread.

Just Kill Me

Had 4.1.1 rooted with CWM. Phone downloaded a 600MB update file. Got some sort of error part way through. Flashed stock recovery back. Let phone download OTA update. Stopped half way through the flash and aborted. No error, rebooted before I could see one - just said that it was interrupted or something after rebooting. Go to check for updates and it says the phone is up to date, however about shows 4.1.1! Kernel though is showing SMP Preempt Nov 20 date so that's go to be something new.
I noticed on Kies it says 4.1.1 is the latest version! I know 4.3 had a lot of bugs initially. Is AT&T still chickening out on this for now and all the msgs I see about 4.3 OTA update are before AT&T stopped it? Or somet issue with my phone.
I'm about to just do back to CWM, move to CM11 nightly and roll the dice on having to deal with bugs and other funky stuff. But then stability is my #1 priority so maybe just stay on 4.1.1. Can't be right as I thought there was a 4.1.2 even?? (I had the update app frozen via TI so I never bothered with the OTA updates.)
*** shoots straight into your head ***
Dead, yet ?
There's a flashable zip of the official 4.3 update in the development thread. I would recommend the no knox prerooted version though because the other version is apparently "unrootable" right now.

Jazee, I read your posts on why you chose to try 4.3. I did what jukiewalsh recommends & have 4.3 as a stable DD.
This only works if your bootloader remains on 4.1.2 or less!

I took a quick look and qasn't sure what thread you are referring to?
I'm guessing this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233
But aside from having a pre-root pre-no knox version how does this one compare to this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
Are both of these buggy and that's why AT&T stopped pushing out the update?

I'm pretty sure that is the difference, that it's pre-rooted and insecure. As the second one's title says it's a "one way road". If you have any plans on rooting or installing a custom rom in the future I wouldn't do the second one because currently I think it's hard to root. The other one is essentially like flashing a custom rom so you can still switch between other ones or flash a kernel if you ever decide to. And I haven't tried the 4.3 TW yet so I can't attest to the bugginess
