So I went to a Verizon store... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

And the Galaxy Nexus almost seemed like a joke to me. It lagged, had choppy scrolling, would take forever to load random sites, the GPS was extremely inaccurate... Is this normal? It kinda sucked, to be honest!

I'm pretty sure it's ABNORMAL.

All demo phones are like that(this includes tablets, laptops, etc). People get their grimy hands all over it and do who knows what. Mine Nexus has zero lag and the browser is amazing. It also pinpointed my exact location in the Chick-fil-a drive-thru.

You mustve been playing with a rezound, not the nexus.

Rule #1 of shopping for a phone/tablet. Never trust a demo device!
I'm assuming it had 100 useless apps loaded on it, lots of crap running in the background, and a live wallpaper that made the homescreens lag, and hasn't been rebooted since they turned it on. I just described every demo Android device in the Verizon store.

Swype Availability???

Is it out yet for the nexus? Cause I need it badly, I keep thinking I have it lol
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
It took me a few days to stop trying to swype. I tried SlideIT, ended up liking the stock keyboard more.
To actually answer the question, apparently they have not updated it yet for GNex screen resolution.

I used to be a swype fanatic... nothing seemed as fun or efficient. i installed and uninstalled SwiftKey about 3 times before just settling on it due to really appreciating its predictive text capabilities and accuracy. also the fact that it learns your style so well. so ya, try it out

The thread title is misleading as others including myself may think it's actually out when it's not.

screen resolution shouldn't be a problem, I'm using swype on my rezound. Maybe an ICS incompatibility???

It's incompatible because swype doesnt see the resolution because of the Softkeys on the bottom (Screen res. is reported a little less then 720p).
As to getting an update on it...Doubtful there will be any before early 2012.
As I understand it Swype got aquired by a different company (Nuance), so they are in the "thinking box" trying to decide which software should be implemented where...

Swype please
I've been in the swype beta program for Android for about 2 years and still waiting for a bill to buy the product. Maybe through the acquisition by Nuance there could be an investment to make it a product (OEM licence or end-user) and then engage the developers to finish the excellent work started by the first team.
Start with ICS and pick up some of the tablet market too.

Laggy Browser [Updated with video]

Hello folks, I'm having a lot of lag while browsing the web. Pinch to zoom is extremely laggy in some webs. For example, when I go to nytimes or theverge.com (desktop version) I can't almost do anything because of the lag. I'm quite curious why nobody has pointed this out. The browser experience was way smoother in my Galaxy S II. Are you experiencing the same issue?

Sorry, what?

Browser is buttery smooth on all sites I visit. The Verge reviewed the phone using their own site, sure they would have noticed lag... Bottom line is you're doing something wrong unfortunately. Do you have flash enabled?

You're telling me that you can browse theverge.com without lag? Because there are just 2 possibilitues: You didn't try that website or I have a defective unit.
Well I just tested theverge.com. mobile and full site and everything was pretty smooth.: did notice a bit of stutter but I think it due to the Flash on the site. Kinda like phonedog.com. u running fully Stock

No, that's not the case. I have a very decent speed. I am already uploading the video to youtube. Hope to hear your comments and suggestions
Yea, the only time I get lag is if the page is still loading.
Wait for or download 4.0.3 , it fixes the browser lag. Theverge.com is smooth now.

If you own the gsm version, download the 4.0.3 rom by bigxie, it fixes the browser lag.

At the end of the video when the website is fully loaded is when I get the most lag (minute 00:54 till the end, the web is loaded). Anyway this doesn't happen on the Galaxy S2, that is why I am surprised. So it seems everyone is experiencing lag, but the reviews say it's the best browser ever on android. I can't comprehend that bull****.
P.S. If anyone has doubts and thinks the lag is because of the web that was loading. I can upload tomorrow a video to show them that there is the same lag. Let's try to be objective please.
That isn't really a fair site to test on. It is loaded with images, and other crap that will slow it down. It lags on my droid3 my bionic my thunderbolt and my rezound. The only thing it doesn't lag on is my iPhone which gives processing priority to touch user input. All web page processing/loading stops when you touch the screen.
Did you try to replicate the issue on a more average page?
It is true that my galaxy nexus is the slowest of all my phones but that's because it has old 2007 technology GPU in it but most other sites it handles just fine.

Old tech. Gpu? Its only two years old. If you want to go by the 2007 date every gpu is 2 years old by the time it hits the street.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Didnt see the video but Ics uses a browser similar to honeycomb/iOS. Yes, iOS. In the sense that, for smoother scrolling, it loads in tiles. Where gingerbread and others did more software rendering on the whole thing so it loaded all the content more but scrolling was stuttery and such. Basically its a newer thing google is doing and there are still kinks. like honeycomb, heavy image content it will still kind of hiccup (ics is better than honeycomb in that regard) and you'll see blank white tiles if you scroll too fast

Lol...uhhh no. The galaxy nexus has an older technology gpu if you compair to razr or rezound. While it doesn't mean much in normal situations as it is sufficiently powerful, dogging it out on the verge bloated website and moving all the images around you'll notice a bit more lag.... like it even matters because that fat site is slow on every device.
And whatever you mean by the "every gpu is 2 years old" is beyond me... because it is simply untrue. Please go do research...Im not going to hold your hand on it but ill give you a link to start. http://www.google.com
Btw, 2 years in smartphone market is ancient. Look at the specs today vs 2 years ago... and btw, 2007 was 4 years ago... not 2.
Cheers.

Maybe you shouldn't expect desktop versions of media heavy sites to work flawlessly on your mobile.
Having said that, it works fine for me once the site (the verge desktop version) loads. I get a tiny little bit of stutter when pinch zooming but its barely noticeable.

on a 4.0.3 rom and its fcing on subs too. If you look at the error report it looks like an issue with YouTube trying to get some ads and failing to do so (things are pointing to doubleclick). Hope this gets resolved soon, cuz its affecting more than just subscription videos.

Getting constant fc's. It seems to affect most videos, not just subscriptions. 80% or more of anything I try to watch just force closes regardless if it's from subscriptions or just opened from the home page of the app.
went through a few people and finally found a friend who works at google. Oddly enough he knew what was going on, and even funnier, he (or his team) might have been the ones who broke it. Well, at least now things might get fixed now.

It makes sense for them to feature those apps right now. Given the proximity to a kid-centric holiday and that their target demographic is Kindle Fire toting soccer moms, they're going to put apps like that front and center right now. Same can be expected for Christmas.

I dunno if the free apps differ by region, but here in the UK Jamie's 20 minute meals was free yesterday, Jelly defense before that (currently in play store for £2.45) and thumb keyboard was also free recently. It's still worthwhile checking everyday.

I was trying to be sarcastic. The app is terrible on my devices (Galaxy nexus and nexus 7). I have a hundred or so apps on the 'cloud' from Amazon. Browsing the list and trying to install them is like pulling teeth. It's slow and not responsive. Button presses offer no feedback and seem nonfunctional most of the time. Is it not like that for everyone else?

Amazon free apps have been crappy. I still take a minute out of the day to check it just in case. Every once in a while, something good comes around. Audubon birds was a big score for me a few months ago.
I do wish you could "purchase" without having to download, even though install is optional, still uses space.
It's been laggy for me too, especially when trying to delete apps off the list. Accidentally discovered that feature a couple nights ago.

Thinking about picking up one

I've been an HTC guy for years, I've tried a couple of Samsung's (Galaxy S(fascinate), Galaxy Nexus,S4) and I keep coming back to HTC.
Personally, I can't stand anything bigger than the Rezound/Galaxy Nexus. I returned the S4 because I couldn't find a comfortable way to hold it. The DNA wasn't much better (gave to my mother after a week)
The HTC one is a perfect fit size wise, I honestly don't know how anyone can use the note's as a phone... Just too big.
I may be sticking with the HTC one for a Long time, I love the build quality, design and the size (as compared to all the phones on the market now)

I came from the S3 and so far, it's a very nice phone. I really like how it feels in the hand when you are talking and I like how I can swype with one hand. As far as speed, it doesn't really feel faster than my S3, they feel about the same. Sense is fine, I use Nova as my primary launcher. Battery is good, better than the S3. But keep in mind, it's not unlocked right now and we don't know if any devs are working on it.

I've had 0 issues with lag on this phone, the speed is pretty staggering.
i've had the phone for a week and have been very impressed with it. Battery gets me through a day. its very fast as well i haven't noticed any lag.
I haven't seen any of these high end phones lag. I'm thinking some people just like drama. Great phone. Use my rule though be happy and make your purchase based on what is on the phone assuming it will never be unlocked. I've been pretty happy using the logic. I'm unlocked myself, but also happy running rooted stock sometimes.
Long time HTC user up until recently had the sg3/sg4/
This phone is great, I highly suggest it.
The build quality i superior to Samsung, and IMO we have a much better chance of unlock root for this phone than on the s4.
I have a good feeling I'll be selling my s4 in the near future.

Re read my post. I've used an s4 its pretty much just as good. People are biased from time to time. Also as my other post said lag is more perception at this point. These super phones do amazing things. Sometimes I think my keyboard "lags" on the one badly for instance. I also realize the other factors at play. Heck people here in this forum complain about sense 5 being laggy. My point is that lag is half perception.

I'm in the same boat. I currently have a note 2 and thinking of either the HTC one or moto x. I love the build quality of the One but love that the moto x is pretty much stock android.
