Thoughts on wifi calling, update itself - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Really liking this new wifi calling, works so much better than the app found on older phones. sound quality is great and now i finally get text and calls at a house with no service and it just works.
Battery life is improved, phone feels faster, no crashes so far. i think ill stick with this stock rom until maybe ICS cyanogen comes out.
Updated through Kies. it said it didnt have an update at first but if you leave it open a while the update downloads in the background and becomes available.
Good luck!

Totally agree...loving wifi calling/texting! I flashed Whitehawkx ROM. And it does seem to be snappier than when my phone was stock. Haven't had it on long enough to gauge battery yet. But when I first got my SG2 it was great for about a week, then the glitchy **** started just like my old Galaxy. So we shall see. But I am missing Juggernaut!

Ok this is a really dumb question, but what is Kies? Is it that Kies Air app on the phone? Or is that totally unrelated? And I'm on stock not rooted. Do I have to wait until T-Mo pushes it to me, or can I still use this Kies method?

Yeah the same program you use with Kies Air.

Just noticed that my wifi calling isn't working when making a call using my Google Voice number. No issues when I'm making a wifi call not using my GV number.

GV is totally independent of WiFi calling so it's something else. I just made a call with WiFi calling and Google Voice and my GV number came up fine.

Get unlimited WiFi calling!
From what I've noticed, there is no echo with this new WiFi calling (there would always be one with the old app on speaker). the new update provides substantially better battery life but I am noticing some issues when going between 4G and EDGE. Sometimes it picks up GPRS and stays there.

Better battery Life
Plus in my experience using WiFi over T-mobile's data is better for battery life because WiFi is more consistent.
HuGE diff between them. . . Home button lag removed, better scrolling, smoother transitions, better battery life, wifi calling, other bug fixes.

It seems right the battery is better for me.
Calling over WiFi is not important for me since I have unlimited calling.

Don't forget that you can use wifi calling to make calls or send sms/mms when there's weak or no cell phone signal.

[Q] Wifi calling on ICS?

I know there are reasons for not having it in our phone with ICS but many T-mobile users use this product frequently. I noticed that my lg g2x has ics roms available that have wifi calling. And was wondering how this is possible considering there are no tmo phones with ics and wifi calling. And if the g2x has it on ics then we shouldn't be far from getting it in ICS for our galaxy s2. It is integrated in our galaxy s2 and the g2x still uses the app. So the app has been made to work in Ics. I personally don't care if it is the app or integrated.
This is just my observation. Didn't know if anyone else noticed other Tmobile phones with ics and wifi calling.

Unfortunately, TMo bakes wifi calling into the ROM. Therefore, until TMo releases ICS, there is a 99.99% probability that there will be no ICS roms with wifi.

But I just started that lg g2x has ics with wifi calling. but it uses the app instead of integrated. that's it. So there its a Tmobile phone with ics and wifi calling. But it is in the g2x

Also the hd2 has wifi calling. Not even a Android phone. The app would be the easiest to adapt.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Correction: TMo baked wifi calling into the 989 rom with 2.3.6.
So again, there will be no wifi calling on ICS roms for this phone (Hercules) until TMo releases ICS for this phone.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
So they only reason is because it was baked in instead if an app?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Yes, with the new phones T-Mo has started to use IMS based wifi calling. It is integrated into the OS, instead of an external app like they used on other phones in the past.
The app based wifi calling still works. So would it be possible to adapt the app to work on our phone? Considering they have got the wifi app working on so many other devices that never had wifi calling.

Bump for interest

Exactly I think its a legitimate start. G2x has wifi calling and ics. But the s2 had only had integrated wifi calling. So adapting the app to work with or phone us what its needed. It is already ics compatible

Yeah, I'd really love to get it working. The best I've gotten it is it'll let you make / accept calls ~50% of the time with a good chance of going into a bad state and yet unmeasured general radio performance problems.
A lot of the patches out there just don't work -- they don't have enough in the build.props modifications. The most successful attempts I've seen modify the build.props to spoof the build ID and stuff.
Also most of the patches I've seen are missing GanOptimizer.apk which is used for Wifi Calling app.

I have my google voice number for life and the quality on my groove ip over wifi is superior to cellular. I had to tweak the groove settings to get a decent call quality though. I dont use my tmobile number. Complete throw away number that I usually change anyway. To each their own I guess.
I use Google Voice number for texts as well.

This is wrong. There is no T-Mobile-specific “Wi-Fi calling” available for the GN, at least not at this time. If you want to make calls over the Internet, you either need to use an app or the VoIP/”Internet Calling” that’s built into Android—and more information on the latter is available at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583120.

[Q] Any Jelly Bean Roms with Wifi Calling?

Hello,
I was wondering if there is any Jelly Bean roms that support Wifi calling. I need Wifi calling where I work because I get no reception in my office.
Or is there any other roms that is recommended that has Wfi calling?
Thanks for any help.
Why not use Viber? It uses your mobile number as the ID and anyone else using Viber can make a free VOIP call to you.

And therefore is completely different than WiFi calling.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Wi-Fi calling is a TMobile creation thus must be cooked into the rom base by TMobile. Since we dont have a TMobile release for JB for the T989 the answer would be no.
And to reiterate what the poster above me said, wifi calling is more than VOIP.
WiFi Calling / Using WiFi to Surf?
I have no doubt this may be a stupid question, but if I was to use one of the Jelly Bean ROMS and lose wifi calling, does that also mean that I could not connect to the web via wifi?
Thank you in advance for any help. This is a deciding factor for me.
I am using the Galaxy S2 t989 Hercules.

Well, the discussion about Google voice would be a whole new issue. The bottom line is, its different than TMo wifi calling.
As far as Bell getting an update...might want to browse the official jelly-bean sticky for that info.
I am in the same situation, and use wifi calling at home. The problem with GV and other services like that, is that you won't receive calls to your Tmobile number when you don't have signal. You can only call out on the phone, which will use your GV number when you do. Unless you give everyone your GV number, but for me that wasn't very practical, since I've had my T-mo number for over 10 years (ported from my old home phone #).
So, if you have no signal and want to use wifi, people wanting to get a hold of you will have to call your GV number instead of your Tmobile number. As far as taking over your phone, GV has an option to use the GV number for every call, so it sorta does take over. But if you click no, you can manually enable/disable GV when you use it. I think it asks you every time you make a call, which was kinda annoying, as was enabling/disabling GV every time I was connected to wifi.
On top of that, just about every one of those apps I tried other than GV, had poor quality and/or call echo issues. Even the ones with echo cancellation didn't work well in my experience.
So I just went back to t-mo based ROMs that had wifi calling built in, and it's much easier for me.
I'm basically in the same boat. Both of my houses have complete dead spots and very little to 1 bar of reception if ever. I heavily rely on wifi-calling.
So has any JB 4.2/4.3 ROMs popped up yet with Wifi-Calling? Does anyone know of any sort of gains in figuring it out?
Nope....only touchwiz roms.

I am inclined to agree but to a point. In the end it's still code, someone had to create it and inject it into the official tmobile ROMS there for it can be reverse engineered. I would suspect that it's such a tedious task that it hasn't been done. To find the several lines of code the amount of effort wasn't worth the time to invest especially since you could copy and past

Call prob after official 4.3 update

My wife has this phone and I have the s3. After doin TT the update to 4.3, we both have experienced the same issue. When I am on 4g and she is on LTE, we cannot make calls to someone on WiFi calling. We can receive them just not make them. All other calls work. When on 2g or edge it works. I finally found a fix for mine, since my s3is rooted, I reflashed the modem only and mine is fixed. My wife won't let me root hers, the note 2. With that being said, what are my options, because I think that would work for hers, but she won't let me root.

I have the same issue with my stock 4.3 Note 2... not sure what happen during the OTA but im led to assume that with all the newer LTE phones, note 2 users arent the only phones accessing those bands, and something was shifted that creates more instability with wifi calling. I say more instability, as even when I was on 4.1.1/4.1.2 there would be times when friends/family would call/message me when I was connected to certain wifi's (at my girlfriends/etc) and the call would never come through, the messages would receive until I disconneced from the wifi. Even when leaving a voicemail, it was hit or miss for me to get those until I disconnected from wifi.
Not sure if it is a compatibility issue from being connected to edge vs lte vs etc (like you have narrowed down) as it may be a wifi router issue, or just initial bugs with wifi calling in general, considering wifi calling is still (in my mind) in its infancy stage

I wouldn't necessarily say WiFi calling is in its infancy. I've been with T-Mobile since before the first android. We had Wi-Fi calling with the 2nd android phone T-Mobile had, the cliq 1. Every phone we have had has had Wi-Fi calling since. The first hiccup we ever had was with the HTC one s. With the note 2 we haven't had a problem until the update. Being an IT tech, I couldn't help but do my own ts, since it was happening to my s3 as well. What we found was it only happens if she makes a call on 4g or LTE going to a phone that has Wi-Fi calling turned on. If that person turns it off and goes to where they actually has signal, the call goes thru fine. My s3 was doing the same, but it is rooted.
We have put several calls into T-Mobile IT dept. That has stumped them badly. They have no idea why this is happening.
On my phone, I finally had the bright idea to reflash just the modem. It worked. No more issues on mine.
I can't root hers(she won't let me), and I know that will fix it by flashing the modem only.
So, sorry for long post, but that is where I'm at. I'm stumped, unless maybe just using Odin to flash the update all over again (like that will happen, she don't like it when I play with her phone).
