Charging the battery for the first time - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I am getting this for my son for christmas and was just wondering how long I should charge it for the first time? I believe that you are supposed to run the battery down to 0 then charge fully, but for how long? I know that we have plenty going on on christmas day and I dont want his phone dying on him and him not being able to use it because it has to charge for 9 hours.

when the light turns green it's fully charged.
if you want to do a full charge then yeah.. wait for it to say 'low battery' or die completely, then charge it till it turns green.
easy way of killing the battery fast is leaving LTE on & the screen on while letting it play a video or a game.

The run down to 0 thing is not true with lithium ions. It comes about 60% charged. I say leave it alone until Christmas eve, put it on the charger over night, and you will be good.

OK, how is battery on the device?

Do NOT let the phone die to 0%. It's best to charge it as soon and as often as possible. Letting it die completely hurts more than it helps, although it is sometimes useful to do when you want to calibrate the it (once a month max).
Mine came at 40% and I just started using it right away. They say to let it charge fully and sit for a few extra hours, but I never do.

What green light are you talking about? I haven't seen any green light when charging mines.

Actually, the discharging/charging thing when the battery's new is a good practice, even for Lithium-Ions. Not for the battery's sake, but so that the phone battery monitoring is as accurate as possible. Helps to give better figures.

you can always just wipe battery stats in clockwork recovery to recalibrate.

Yeah no indicator or what so ever. Just text on lock screen says charged means its full. If you charge it while phone is off lightly tap power button it will show big battery icon on the middle of the screen

[Q] CM 7 battery

Running cm 7 for a few days now. Like it more than I thought I would.
One issue though, more of an annoyance I guess, when charging,
the green led comes on for a full charge, but the battery is not fully
charged yet. Is there a fix for this, or is it something I need to learn to live with?
I think you'll have to deal with it. CM7 runs the same way for me. Once unplugged (green led) it shows 90%. I've tried clearing batt stats many times to no avail.
I've heard this is a gingerbread bug and not just specific to cm, for a fix; if you can call it a fix, you can use a kernel with fastcharge enabled. Usually when I charge my phone using chads latest kernel it'll usually only take a half hour to charge completely to 100% so I never really notice this bug tbh.
Noticed it too, just the way it is in GB.

Great article, I've read it before and it makes total sense. However, if I watch my phone when it's charging, when the green light comes on, it is not fully charged. It comes on earlier than when it is actually charged, which is a different thing all together. Mostly just annoying as stated in my op and was just trying to find out if it was a common issue.

I haven't experienced this before. If you leave it plugged in while the green light is on does it continue to charge?
Also have you ever cleared battery stats?

When the green light comes on, it's at 85-90% charge if I look at it. I leave it charging after that and it continues to charge as normal, except the green light is on. Everything functions properly with the exception of the green light coming on too soon. I have cleared batt stats a couple of times and it makes no difference. Mostly just annoying.

[Q] Charge time from 0 to 100 ?

So... I'm calibrating my battery. Charged it to 100%, left it run down to 0%, and am now charging it back up without any break. The problem is... as soon as I plugged in the charger when the phone powered down, the charging battery icon came up..and it wont go away. It's been like this for 2 hours.
I'm hoping the device is actually charging and isn't just frozen or something; I don't want to turn the device on as that might hinder the whole calibration thing.
Question is: Does anyone know how long it takes to charge from dead to 100% ? I need to know when to take the phone and see if it's actually been charging this whole time
Actually that happened to me last night let it charge for a lil bit unplug the phone take the battery out and then put the battery back in and turn the phone back on with the power button and it should turn back on
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Yeah I'd battery pull but can't mess up the calibration process. I know it's charging because the device is somewhat warm in the back and the display can't stay on for this long unless it's getting juice...
I'll battery pull if necessary in a couple of hours, or tomorrow morning. But seriously, this thing better be charging ಠ_ಠ

So it's morning, the device charged, but I did have to do a battery pull before booting it up. All is well :}
Yeah, I had this issue too
Wondered WTF was going on as I couldnt turn it back on whilst it was charging and the battery logo stayed on even when I unplugged it
Was resolved by pulling the battery and powering back on
OP hows your battery doing now?

When I did a full charge from the point that I ran the battery down until the phone turned itself off, it took approx 140min for it to charge completely to 100%. That being said, I'd give it 2.5hrs max and if it still isn't showing it as being done charging, then there may be a problem.

It's caused by the bad cwm. We need a fixed cwm.

Battery was at 27% at 2:47pm. Been turned on since 10AM and playing music for about two hours with screen turned on for 2h 15m. Was in airplane mode for about 2hours as well. No es bueno imo, compared to what I saw before. Might be the new rom/kernels I flashed; even though they were supposed to significantly increase battery life.

My GN battery could only charge up to99%?

Hi, after three times full cycle charge(one through the socket on the wall and two via usb). I found my galaxy nexus battery could only be charged up to 99%, even there is a "complete" showed on the locked screen.
So do i need to reset my phone xia bootloader or anybody know how to solve that? Many thanks!!!!!!

Have you guys tried to turn off your phone and then let it charge once it is full turn it back on? I noticied that was the only way
I was about to post here to ask about this, as I've noticed it as well. Good to hear it's normal, but I'm curious how it protects the battery.
This is standard charging behaviour and happens on the Nexus S too (which is currently my phone). There were similar questions on the Nexus S general forum about this behaviour too.
It is for increasing battery life. You should not charge it to maximum or discharge it completely. It's a well known fact about Li-Ion batteries...

Thanks mate~ I am new on Android, so just curious about this....
I have this issue too. I have noticed that if I unplug it and plug it back in, it will charge to 100%. I had assumed it was because I was using the Samsung 700ma charger. Guess not.
I have noticed my Galaxy Tab 7 does the same thing, but it will show 100% until I unplug it then it will go down immediately to a lower level, I plug it back in and let charge and it goes to 100%.
I have guessed that what is happening is that once it charges to 100%, it stops charging and starts using battery, thus the decrease. I have not watched it to try to catch it as soon at it done charging to see if this is the case as I always charge overnight.
I would guess that if I let it get low enough, it would start charging again. I know my laptop will not charge the battery unless it is 90% or less to prevent top offs that shorten battery life.

the way you used is exactly what my friend told me to do. He has the same issue, and if he unplug the charger when a 'complete' showed on the locked screen and replug it, you could get a 100%!!
Same problem here but I dont care.
I had this problem. My GN would only charge to 98% so I left it on charge for nearly 8 hours and it eventually got to 100% I carried out a battery calibration using this app from the market and its been perfect ever since I've even noticed an increase in battery life

Your not supposed to do this. Charging to 100% and/or letting it drop to 0% decreases battery life in the long run. This applies to all LI-ION batteries, in your laptop, or anything else.
You people that complain about 96-99% just need to get over it. It's like that for a reason. Don't go chasing mods the charge it to 100%, or ways to trick it into saying 100%, just accept that when it says charged it is.
edit: Sorry if I come off as an 8==D. Just tired of seeing posts like this (the nexus S does the same thing. Its by design for a reason.)
My galaxy nexus charges all the way to 100%. But when i leave it charging overnight, when i wake up its on 97%. I think its a built in safety feature to prevent the phone from charging when left plugged in for an extended period.

[Q] Initial full charge duration

How long did it take on you guys' devices to fully charge before starting it for the first time? Im asking because I'm getting mine delivered this wednesday at work at around 2PM, and I leave at 5PM. Will it be fully charged in three hours? i dont want to interrupt it the very fist time already...
I did mine yesterday in around 4 hours, it was power off so I didn't know when it exactly fully charged, when the time I saw the green LED light(i guess it's 90%) I still let it charge for an hour or so i think.
But I guess this thing doesn't matter anymore on lithium ion and lithium polymer(htc one x) batteries, it was important last time during nickel cadmium days.

I used mine instantly after purchase, it only had about 15-20% left so I started charging it at 8%, took a few hours.. quite long.. but I guess that process will speed up after a while, like my other phone.

My one x is currently charging and has been for roughly three quarters of an hour. The documentation it came with said that you have to charge it for at least 14 hours! That sounds ridiculous to me.
Did you guys have any issues with the battery after charging it for 3 or 4 hours?

14?? due i just charged till it became full ... even that was a little more than 3 hours .. this is official htc docs?? u sure ??
I'd say you just let it charge a night (+/- 8 hours) before you start using it. That's the most optimal way to charge it the first time.
But I couldn't wait so I just started charging the device from the start but also used it (which is imo still better then not charging).
A lot of people also say you shouldn't let the battery drop below 10 % on purpose, better just charge it every night! That's what I did with my HTC Desire (AOSP rom) and one full charge lasted 2 days of average use after 1.5 years. Hope to get the same result with this phone.
I left it for about 5 hours until it was fully green. First days usage today and it's been alright. I'd post a screenshot but xda app won't let me upload png. About 9 hours moderate use and at 10% now

Yes that can very well be, that's the % I normally had left on the Desire after a day (with more then average use). I charged it every night and the battery was still awesome at the end. Considering the One X has the same battery technology I'm going to do the exact same thing.
Keep in mind that a green led doesn't mean it is fully charged (at least not the first time). The led turns green when the software says the battery is full, but the issue is that the battery never had been full when you charge it the first time. So that first green led is quite useless, the software isn't optimized yet. Rather watch the clock!

The thing that worries me about charging it every night is that it remains plugged in for several hours after its reached full battery. There isn't much you can really do about that though.
Yeah, I was told that the first couple of charges were used to calibrate the battery monitor and you have to make sure that its fully charged before you unplug. In fact, my Nexus s (soon to be 'my old nexus s') only ever charged up to '97%' according to the various battery widgets I used. This may have been to do with me not charging it properly the first time.
What I want to know is can I turn it on and let it continue to charge? That way I can set it up and install my apps etc (and, of course, have a play) so I don't go insane waiting without damaging the battery life.
There we go.

I do it when I can't get a full charge before bed; but I also wake up 2-3 times per night and tend to unplug it once I notice it's at 100%. I've read that once it reaches 100%, if it stays on charge for a certain amount of time it will switch to battery and drain, then charge back to 100% after a certain percentage is drained. I would say that's the case as I woke up one morning and the phone was at 92% charge and was in the process of charging. Battery info said it was charging on AC and the graph showed it went to 100% then back down.

I do use that guide. My signal is terrible and is what drains my battery. I really don't believe that is related to any app running wild and draining my battery because from completely dead to 100% takes about 2.5-3 hours with me using it, WiFi on, brightness at 100%, etc; I can also easily get over 2 days without a charge with light use... It would be more but my lack of signal accounts for an almost 1.5% per hour idle drain. Good signal areas I'll drain less than .5% per hour with no use/app changes outside of having a strong signal.
Weird...
When your phone charges to 100%, your phone knows to stop charging, mine always stops charging when is says "reached 100%". I just leave it on the charger and it stays steady at 100 until i take it off.
It shouldn't effect the lithium ion, either.
I thought that was the special thing about lithium ion?
They don't wear down?
Idk, could be wrong.

I always leave it charging when I fall asleep. And if, IF I wake up in the middle of my sleep and see that it's at 100% I'll unplug it. If I don't wake-up I'll just leave it charging until I wake up. Been doing that since before I even had a smartphone and never had any problems. Then again I do switch phones every year

Bought some cheap batteries on Amazon, I charge whenever I want, however I want (typically overnight, all night). If I ruin the battery, so be it, I can just pop it out and replace it in 5 seconds. This is the real advantage of having a removable battery.
I've always left my smartphones on the charger overnight. Seven years going and haven't had any issues. I do tend to replace my battery after 9-12 months of use though.

This sums it up. Per the article linked earlier in the thread about charging li-ion, it sounds (relatively) trivial for the device manufacturer to implement a charging cut-off after the cells reach a specific voltage level. Once the cells drop to a certain level they're safe to charge again, and the cycle starts over. I don't imagine it's great for the battery to sit on that recharge cycle, but it's not going to over-charge and become a fire hazard.
I imagine external battery chargers might be a little different. That $3 battery & charger from eBay isn't going to have the same safety regulations as a major manufacturer like Samsung.

An interesting tidbit from that article.
Li-ion does not need to be fully charged, as is the case with lead acid, nor is it desirable to do so. In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because high voltages stresses the battery.

I'm pretty sure a $600 phone can handle any of your charging blunders. Relax kid.
We're not dealing with Nokia's anymore.

Avoiding full charge has benefits, and some manufacturers set the charge threshold lower on purpose to prolong battery life.
Lithium-ion does not need to be fully charged; a partial charge is better.

I get the general concepts that the article presents, but it doesn't really address any advances in charging methodologies that newer devices could add. It reads like it was designed for 'dumb' devices such as cordless phones, rechargable power tools, etc. For instance, it says never to charge with the device powered on. Yet Windows Phones (at least my Lumia 800) won't charge with the device off...plugging it in automatically boots the phone up.
Our phones obviously have more advanced power circuitry, such as being able to hold the power button in and have the device power cycle no matter what state the phone is in, and I assume it applies to other parts of the phone as well.
