[Q] General question about flashing (I'm on 2.1) - Defy General

Hi guys,
i'm reading everthing I find since this morning trying to find out exactly what I have to do in order to install CM7 or CM9.
I have a green lence Defy with 2.1 (2.51.1).
I have rooted my phone with SuperOneClick and then
I installed 2ndInit Recovery Installer v2.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212).
Now, I would like to install CM7 but it seems that I should first install a 2.2 ROM before. Is it still the case today or can I immediatly install a CM7 ROM ?
Is it possible to use the dual boot tool with Android 2.1 ? So that I could install CM7 as virtual system and keep my sms, contacts and apps on my real system ?
Should I use RSD Lite or can I use the bootmenu to install CM7 ?
I'm lost so your help is really wlecome.
Thank you all for your help !

You can't use Dualboot with Eclair 2.51-1. Try to save your Apps with Titanium Backup, Appmonster or else. Your contacts should be saved if you use Gmail. Otherwise try My Phone Explorer as example. So your SMS should be saved this way too. After that flash Froyo 2.2 using RSD Lite.
Root Froyo with Gingerbreak or Superoneclick and install SndInit again. You can now install CM7 using Recovery.

3. Installed recovery in Clockwork mod recovery
4. Rebooted in recovery by choosing the option in Clockworkmod recovery
5. flashed the Nordic 3.4.2.155 nandroid...
6. While rebooting press Power+Volume-
7. let RSD lite recognize your phone
8. Flash 3.4.2_155 fixed sbf...
9. Phone will boot into nordic 2.2
10. Install clockwork mod recovery again.
11. Reboot into recovery (step 4), install update from zip (barebones 1.4) and voila...
To install 1.5 I just flashed the 3.4.2_177 nandroid and then Barebones 1.5...

So,Now it means my fone is fully rooted right..??(Correct me if i'm wrong )
So,Now all i want to know the easiest and safest Way To Install CM7(stable) if possible then please provide the link thnxx in advance
Help me
Yes its rooted, but, to install Custom ROMs, you will need to install a Custom Recovery (ie Clockworkmod).
There are 2 ways to go about it:
1) Fastboot - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14693680
2) PC49IMG - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130044
I have only used the Fastboot method so far, so if you need further assistance, just ask.
BTW, Both the above methods need S-OFF using AlphaRev X. If you are not having S-OFF, then simply use Unrevoked to install the Clockworkmod Recovery.
Once Clockworkmod Recovery install is complete, follow this post to install Custom ROMs like Cyanogenmod 7:

@xeno
Heyy thanx for replying "3xeno"
Just few minutes ago i installed titanium backup when this app starts
it's showing Root access : FAILED
And a msg popped up : "Sorry,i could not acquire root privileges - This Application will "not" work ! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox,and try again
Please Help me what the hell is happening ??
Got Superuser App in your App Drawer? Also, what exactly did you do to root your device? Did you use AlphaRev X or use Unrevoked?
Yup I got superuser automatically in app drawer and i used alpharev X
Weird, Then try installing Busybox from within Titanium Backup. (Press Menu Key, then Press "Problems", It''ll download Busybox).
Also, can you explain what all procedures you followed after getting S-OFF using AlphaRev X?
and bro one thing more
One minute ago i installed SHootme app and this app also asked me for superuser priveleges I allowed it and it worked...shootme app is working i don't know y titanium app is sayin like that ??
And yaa The method u posted in ur 1st post i hve already done that...i hve installed it via PC49IMG
Okay, well since you've got recovery you are now able to install custom ROM's.
Download the one you want (Cyanogenmod gives good performance),
put on your sdcard,
boot recovery (turn off, hold volume down and press power, use volume down to navigate to recovery, press power).
Backup stock ROM from backup & restore.
Wipe dalvic cache in advanced menu, wipe boot, data, system, cache in mounts and storage.
Then install zip from sdcard. Voila.

Titanium backup not giving you root previlages whereas other app gave. There is a possibility that you accidentally denied the "root permission" of titanium backup when you opened it for 1st time. As it will be in a remembered state it might be the issue. Open "superuser" from app drawer and check the root permission status of titanium backup. Another suggestion is to update the Su binary from superuser app. Then download busybox installer from market and install busybox from that. Then open titanium backup.
There is absolutely no risk in installing cm7. But do make nandroid backup of your current rom so that you can revert back anytime if you don't like it.

CM7 is an AOSP ROM, so obviously there will not be Sense in that, which is the proprietary of HTC. Refer this thread for lists on ROMs:

You are not getting me. CM7 is an AOSP ROM. AOSP stands for the Android Open Source Project, and is intended to be the base where Google releases their Android Source Code (Android is an open source OS after all).
CM7 is based on that. Obviously, Sense is an HTC Product, and hence is not a part of AOSP. If you want Sense, you will have to get a Sense ROM. Sense will NOT work on ANY AOSP ROM. I hope this is clear to you.
Again, refer the ROM list I gave you the link to in the previous post, I have segregated it based on whether a ROM is based on Sense or based on AOSP.
If you want Sense, you cannot use CM7.
For your 2nd query, yes, installing process is as you have described. However, make sure you perform a "Wipe Data / Factory Reset" in Clockworkmod before installing a new ROM to prevent issues.
Ok Sir I got You Thanx For Ur Help

If you are on CM7, you will need to flash an additional GApps Package (Google Apps), which will give you Android Market. You can download it here:
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
Look for
gapps-gb-20110613.zip or
gapps-gb-20110307.zip
Flashing procedure remains the same. Place file on your SDCard, Reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery, Select Install Zip from SDCard and choose the above zip.

Ok it's pretty simple. Do following.
1.> Root the device using 2ndInit
2.> Create nanodroid backup
3.> Make sure you turn off USB Debugging
4.> Reboot to enter Bootmenu (Press Volu+ when you get blue light)
5.> go to Custom Recovery> backup and restore> Backup. This will take sometime.
6.> Choose Wipe data/Factory Reset (you will lose all data, apps etc)
7.> Select Wipe cache partition and then go to Advanced > Wipe Delvik Cache
8.> Go back and then select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard
9.> Then select the Zip from the SD card and say Yes
Wait for sometime, reboot and you're done.
After this is done, you can user gapps.zip to install the google applications.
thanks to the post @mandhir.
You need froyo 2.2 in order to upgrade to CM7. Since CM7 uses the same Froyo kernel you can downgrade any time you want. A nandroid backup is adviced incase you arent impressed with the changes and want your phone back in the previous state.

That's exactly what a nandroid backup is.
Sent from my ME525+ using Tapatalk
method 1 was deviced at the time when there's no official froyo available, and it's now outdated. it was for you to upgrade from eclair to fixed froyo sbf since cm7 requires froyo. just ignore that since you already have official froyo in your phone.
you will also come across some old posts mentioned doing a nandroid backup of eclair and flashing a fixed froyo before cm7 incase you need to downgrade back to eclair for warranty purposes. that's out of date too since you can now do that with official froyo.
so just start from method 2 and you'll be right. and make sure you run defy basebandswitcher in the app page to select the correct baseband for your phone/carrier. this very important step is missing in the instructions unfortunately, and caused me some frustrations and nearly given up on cm7
edit: if you have a lot of apps in your phone now and want to port them into cm7, do a backup using apps like titanium backup etc. it's different from nandroid backup which is like an image clone of your current phone state.
@ryan thanks. nw i understood thing more clearly .. cm7 requires froyo kernel. Bt somepost i read to use an Froyo Ceee jordan version (i dnt remeber the term completely
) if u cant upgrade succesfully to cm7 from ur stick froyo .. I hopes it wont happen to me ..
@jh20 thanks a lot man . i nw it clear like water for me . seems i shuld have checked the posted date along with reading those old ones..
i had a misunderstading that titanium is used to take nanndroid backup and from there all the doubts started ..
im posting what i understood
Titanium backp will only contain apps and user settings which cant be used to directly flash as ROM . it used to restore the data to phone after installing or reseting the same OS on which backup is made.
While nanndroid backup is an image of the existing OS with all the uset settings and app so u can restore it anytime . this will be helpfull f cm7 is nt satisfying ur need..

they are all fixed sbf.
(edit: actually i think they are nandroid backups and not fixed sbf, sorry)
those that are not downgradable will be mentioned specifically in their first post.
i've nandroid backups of cm7, miui, and stock froyo. i can switch between them anytime i want, just like clone image backups of my pc
btw i think they should have called it "patched" sbf instead, as "fixed" can be confusing. when i first saw it i thought it meant the rom is fixed and can't be altered/downgraded which is just the opposite of what it's supposed to mean
A fixed SBF is flashed in order to provide the missing kernel in a rom( and other stuff). But since you're already on a froyo kernel you wont need it, as CM7 requires the same. It is it proposed to use a Nordic froyo as base for better performance but you can use any official froyo as base to upgrade to CM7.

@ryan thanks friend.it was de direct answer. i thought the "fixed" wont have those two partitions which store version number so that they wont be formated and overwritten and thus keep downgradabilty .( gt this from defy guide @ xda ) .. didnt thought abt the kernel part ..
so now i feel its easy than it seems to be if i can switch between os with the nandroid backup . my defy has now 1 gb free . dat it it took total 1gb with app an OS. how much space nandroid will it take .. im using an 8gb card. and i have all apps backup. (not settings).
and how u feel cm7 .. doest it made any bug to u . i dnt have feel any bug at my froyo 2.2.2???
im planing to use this link RC1.5 Here:http://www.multiupload.com/217FS9PYDC from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13279140&postcount=1
is that ok for me ??
once again thanks all ..
i don't use any extra apps and my stock froyo nandroid backup is 357mb with all the motoblur stuff, while cm7 110909 nightly is 226mb. so the size depends on how many apps and data you have i guessed.
Ok .. nw in india we dnt have Moto Blur .and apps take only 200mb (nw free memory is 1000mb showing) as free memory for user is 1200 on factory reset.
another term that came to my mind is "nightly" what it actually means.. I thinks it a custamised form of stable cm7 .. r8 ? can u post some screenshots on defy .. i cant find anysuch thing ..
no, nightly as the name suggested is a nightly updated version. that's right, they work on the rom just about every day! and the daily updated rom file is updated to the jordan-cm7_nightly folder:
http://defy.tanguy.tk/
once a nightly rom is good enough it will be uploaded to the jordan-nightly folder. that's why the jordan-nightly folder has less files than the jordan-cm7_nightly folder.
so if you want to be safe, you should use only nightly roms from the nightly folder. cm7-nightly folder is for the brave as some of them may not be stable or still has known/unfixed bugs. infact i know for the fact the 110912 rom was pulled from the list because it did not work. and notice that there are some nights missing too for some reason
then once they are satisfied that a rom is good enough to be a major release, it becomes the rc, like rc0, rc1 and rc1.5.

That's not true.
Fixed SBF means the Code Group 39 and 31 has been removed from the SBF so it wont flash upper CG versions, and therefore killing your downgrade ability.
You need to use a Nandroid backup after a Fixed SBF is to provide the corresponding Files that "should have been flashed" by the CG39/31.
You cannot change the Kernel, that's locked by Motorola, and we are just using Modules attached to the official Moto Kernel. but nothing more sadly.
And dont worry about bricking your phone, is almost impossible unless you disconnect your phone on a critical point/remove battery while flashing with RSD Lite, like creating partitions or something like that.
The worst that can happen is getting stuck past Boot up logo, which means you just have to start again and flash with RSD
You can restore your nandroid and get back on froyo whenever you wanna throw it into the warranty. Dont worry theres not an option to brick the phone and it isn't that easy anyway. Remember to only wipe data/cache through custom recovery , never use the stock recovery and you should be fine.

no need room manager.. if you have official froyo, just root your defy with superoneclick.. and then you just neet to download app called "2ndinit" from market.. install, reboot and youll see you custom recovery..

Make SURE you don't have 2ndinit and CWM/Rom Manager running at the same time! You'll end up in an infinite boot-loop!!!
If your defy is un-modified right now you should get superoneclick from the store and root your phone. (You install superoneclick on your PC) If you have already modified/rooted you still want Manager to make a backup.
After rooting, install Rom Manager. I really like this program and it makes checking out different ROM's a breeze.
For instance: I have 3 different backup files saved right now... One is a bare, non-rooted 2.2.2 Froyo; one is an initial, rooted load of CM7; and the third is my current, app-loaded, theme loaded, all menu settings where I want backup.
When Rom Manager says it can't flash clockworkmod recovery, just say you have installed your own, and I chose v3.
Use the Manager to do a system backup!
Use Manager to download and install a rom. Or you can download a .zip file from wherever and put it on the SD card and tell Manager to install it.
Ciao

Never ever wipe via stock recovery in CM7, only use custom recovery. I'm sorry but you'll have to start all over again as said above.

No CWM even after root and 2ndinit install after attempt to flash Codename Android JB

Hi. All was working well when I was running Quarx's version of CM10 on my Green Lens Defy. I could update to each new update CM10 ROM by clearing the data and cache then flashing the ROM and GApps. After that, I wiped the dalvik cache and reboot. Note my Defy is using a Froyo kernel.
Then I decided to try out Codename Android JB Beta and I did what I normally did with the ROM and then GApps. I ended up stuck in a bootloop. No problem I thought. I'd just reflash Quarx's own version of CM10 after wiping data and cache. I got stuck in a bootloop again. Odd. I tried it with older versions of Quarx's CM10 and they result in me getting stuck in a bootloop as well. So I flashed the US T-Mobile SPF for the Defy using RSD Lite then I logged in to BLur and such as that is needed to access the homescreen where I then turned on USB debugging. I then plugged in my phone into my computer to use SuperOneClick Root to root my device. It said my device was already rooted though I don't think that should happen since I flashed a stock 2.1 SPF. Well I rebooted and installed the 2ndinit apk then installed 2ndinit using the app. I think it said that 2ndinit was already installed. But if my memory is wrong in this case, I then installed 2ndinit and rebooted my Defy but I never got a blue LED.
Then I did the same steps as I did previously over and over again with variations to try to get it to work.
Can someone help?
I caution anyone who may attempt to install Codename Android JB Beta from CM10.
On another matter, downloading an OTA update then rebooting when pressing "install now" brings me to the triangle with exclamation screen and gets stuck there.
Have you done a fullwhipe in the Motorola Recovery before flashing the SBF??(usually you would get a bootloop without fullwhiping but maybe the solution is that easy )
And why did you flash a 2.1 SBF you should maybe try some other SBFs like the Froyo SBFs for your Country

Oh a full wipe in stokc recovery is needed? I'll try it.
Can you suggest a good SBF for a US Green Lens Defy if you know any?
Is it fine if I use the 3.4.2-179 CEE Deblur SBF as recommended by Quarz for a base then root, install 2ndinit. and flash CM10 from Clockwork Mod Recovery?

Yep fine for using that one but you should definitely check out the begginers guide for sbf rooting ect as you've been having trouble with this for the last few days now and I'd really like to see get this sorted once and for all
