Facebook Sync VZW - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I know google and Facebook don't get along when it come to contacts. But is there a work around since i don't see the option to sync in the app. I don't care too much about the photos but more the numbers.

You can download friendcaster from the market which will sync contacts and pictures.
If you are interested in rooting and custom roms, Paul from Modaco has it working with the gsm version (still in beta, but it works). There isn't a LTE version yet, but if you're patient, I'm sure he'll be able to get a LTE version of his rom eventually. In the meantime, people have confirmed friendcaster works for now.

No methods that I know of yet ( GSM Galaxy Nexus) however you can sync pictures with contacts by navigating to the picture and clicking the menu button (3 dots) and clicking set as
Edit: it think friend caster works too

I could have sworn that the official Facebook app allowed for contact syncing. I guess it just hasn't been integrated for the GN yet? I really don't want to have to text all my friends and tell them to send me a picture of themselves. lol

Just download "SyncMyPix" from the market. Takes like 30 seconds to sync all of your contacts with their Facebook pictures. You can even set it to sync like once per day if you wanted to. I just use it once a week or so and it works perfectly (at least I did on one of my other phones, and I will here).
Used it on the way home from the Verizon store this morning and it had them all synced up before I was on the highway.

The Nexus phones don't do this. The Nexus One did, but that was before Google changed their policy. Facebook refuses to update to a different API that Google created for contact syncing/management and, as such, Google turns off their ability to sync on official devices.
Facebook's just too damned stubborn to make the (SIMPLE) change.

Any phone with vanilla android will no longer have contact sync with Facebook. (Been this way since the Nexus S) Unless Facebook starts using the API's Google provided them, which Facebook refused to do, this feature will not work unless you have an android overlay like sense, touchwiz, blur, or a custom rom that has enabled this feature.
If you don't want a custom rom, you will have to settle for apps from the market like friendcaster and syncmypics to work around the problem that isn't resolved between Facebook and Google, for now at least.

Low res contact pictures

Hi everyone. In the people app the pictures in ics are all low res. Anyone have any ideas to get the high res pictures? I find it odd that ics wouldnt go out and get the high res pics from facebook etc.
The only solution I've found so far is to manually change contact pictures using high res photos on the phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes, but as soon as you sync with Google Contacts ... Those photos will become low res again.
And again, you must re-assign manually.
Stupid stupid stupid Google ...
So, is there any app or script that can we use to replace all contact photos at once?
First, we told the app ... "this is the image for this contact" ... for all contacts.
Then later, user can replace all with a button click!
Please ... please any developer can make this app? For sure a lot of people will buy to fix this stupid Google low res contact.
*begging* ... I will buy this kind of app, right away!

This is what gets me about Google - for all the good things they do, they are let down by silly details like this.
I have to agree. I was going over every item on the phone, and them my brother called and I was like, WTF ?

My contact photos haven't changed at all since I changed them to high res ones a few days ago...
Surely it has something to do with how much OTA data would be needed to sync hi res photos from gmail contacts to your phone..... I would rather have numbers than have them not sync because the pics are say 20mb each.... Thats why you havetoo set them from the phone.
So, in Google Contacts we should not put any photos?
In this way, when we sync, Google Contacts will not replace the photos that we have set manually?

They won't change on the phone, but the pictures sync back to Google Contacts as a low res 96x96 version.
That means if you need to restore your contacts for whatever reason (such as a factory reset), then you will get a crappy low res version back.

Google seem to be happy using the instant upload feature of G+ to send high res pictures back and forth, so I don't see why they can't enable it with Google Contacts.
Contact pictures will take up far less space, as they are cropped from a full image.
Google said that the contacts app will download peoples pictures from Google+
maybe you don't have that turned on, or maybe thats the only way to truly get high-res pictures. luckily for me all my main friends are on it already.

Yeah it looks like that may be the only way. I assume Google Contacts will be merged into G+ at some point, so there is just one place for all your contacts and issues like this won't happen.
Unfortunately for me only a handful of people I know actually use G+, so I can't rely on it at the minute.
i had this problem on my thunderbolt with the facebook app. the contact pics were very low res
my solution was to sync pics with the "facebook for HTC sense" app, and it worked. pics were beautiful. have you guys tried using an app like syncmypix?

I hope they enable this for facebook too in the future. Although I'm no big fan of FB and I can understand Google considering the cometitive situation, FB is still far more widespread than G+ and most of my friends don't want to join yet another social network.

Syncmypix syncs still in a quite low resolution, even if high res is enabled in the settings. And Syncmypix is definitely not optimized for 720p displays The actual app scales perfectly, but on the "crop" screen where you can edit the pics, every pic is really tiny. See screenshot below

New Galaxy Nexus - How to Import Facebook contacts/pictures?

Have the latest Nexus. Unable to add "Facebook" as contact account. I select Facebook after "add account" and it doesn't seem to add them in.
It's not allowed on ICS. I used FriendCaster and this worked perfectly! The only annoying thing is the low resolution of photos... But that's not a Friendcaster's problem...

With HaxSync, do you have the option to only sync with your existing contacts?
With Friendcaster, you can only sync all contacts, so all of your Facebook friends show up in your contacts.
I bought HaxSync and can say it blows. It often doesn't pair up phone contacts with Facebook contacts. This means having doubles.
Android 2.0.3 will resolve this issue and I would suggest waiting a few weeks

back up your original apk's before doing this manual mod. read comments, someone's phone got borked.
Borked is now a meme!
Can anyone confirm if 4.03 fixes this?
This is a pretty big omission. Wasnt social network updates in the people app was one of the major features announced with ics?
why not get an aftermarket rom that supports this???
Option B.. Friendcaster... IMO this is the best option.... i dont see a problem with my contacts.. i have 1324 fb friends.. all you gotta do is go to People.. Accounts... and just remove friendcaster from your contacts to be displayed and wallaaa.. you dont have a crapload of contacts in your list..
SyncMyPix > Haxsync
So there's SyncMyPix, HaxSync, and Friendcaster.
Which ones sync with existing contacts well so people don't get their huge facebook friend list in their contacts?
Which ones are able to deal with slight name changes for matching contacts and/or with/without middle name?
Which ones sync Hi Res pictures? (when I researched this a little while back, only HaxSync did this)

Unable to add facebook to contacts

Using Verizon 4.02, when ever I try to add facebook to "accounts and sync" under "accounts" under "people" it doesnt do anything. In short I am unable to add facebook for contacts. Even w twiter contacts syn it is saying "sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly." Anybody having similar problems?
You can't tell me you've searched, because if you had, you'd know this is 100% known. Facebook isn't playing ball with Google's requirements to be able to have contacts sync in AOSP Android.
Use an app like HaxSync to get Facebook contacts sync.
Twitter is also well known. Its Twitter's app not being updated properly for ICS.

It is. The thing is that FB contact sync has been broken since the later stock AOSP 2.3 builds for the Nexus S. This isn't something new.
I used to be confused over this problem too but Google told me what happened. So I used HaxSync and it worked fine. However as a perfectionist I decided not to continue using it and flashed a ROM instead (not solely for this reason of course).

[Q] People app missing all facebook contacts

Hello, how are you?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM stock (yakuj) with Android 4.0.4 and Facebook app 1.9.0.
I added my facebook account and have the facebook app installed. I also checked for syncing contacts under Settings-> account & sync.
However, none of my facebook contacts show up at People app.
I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but I still have nothing.
I also tried to re-install facebook app, and still nothing.
Besides, I also tried to show only the facebook contacts changing the settings at People app->contacts to display->customize, but It didn't work either.
Furthermore, I tried to follow the steps on the link bellow, and It didn't work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928393
Please, Does someone have any clue of what can be happening?
I can't figure out why my facebook contacts don't shows at People app.

Native Facebook contact syncing has been left out of Android since Gingerbread 2.3.4!
Roman from AOKP made a "fix" to get Facebook contacts to sync but ...
"Unfortunately, the "fix" breaks Picasa upload functionality and exposes all of your contact data insecurely. Facebook and Twitter need to update their applications to use the correct API introduced in IceCream Sandwich." - Peter Alfonso
This is why some dev's like Pete and Team Douche (Cyanogenmod) have not incorporated this "fix".
If you want your Facebook Contacts synced I would suggest buying HaxSync from the Play Store! That's what I did ... Cheers
Here is your solution: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync&hl=en
It's not free, but it's well worth it. Works flawlessly and is under constant development.

I wouldn't think Facebook will correct this issue if for nothing else other than spite. Your best option is i believe HaxSync its only 99 cents (less than you pay for a coffee) and it securely syncs your contacts, calender events including birthdays and downloads hi-res images of your contacts too. It adds more functionality than the old native sync.

Again, this is a facebook issue. Your easiest solution is to pony up 99 cents as I originally recommended, it'll give you everything you want and then some, I assure you.
Yes the other solution works, but it comes with other issues and requires a bit more effort. You can decide what's more worthwhile to you - spend the time and effort for a broken solution or spend 99 cents to get everything you need easily.

yes basically its the facebook app because its not doing it right ... there was some sort of back story there about fb not wanting to work with google on the issue because fb wanted to take all of the google (gmail) contacts information or something like that.
I think the facebook sync solution you have found there is how Roman from AOKP came up with the "fix" or workaround. That information is more for developers than end users like yourself and obviously is not an easy solution. Again this is not secure syncing either which is why a few respected developers refuse to implement it.
imo HaxSync is the way to go ... fb contacts, hi res images with time line and calendar sync so it offers more than the "fix"

A shame it doesn't work for this purpose, though...I've read about haxsync and it's not a problem that it costs a buck, but it just looks unclean, unofficial, etc. I would like to sync between Facebook and Google via at least Facebook if Google is being a douche, not some 3rd party.
I guess the only way this would be resolved officially is if Facebook came out with a People app replacement...which it might yet do, but so far no go.
Thanks!
I have used haxsync for 2 yrs an recommend it, I only got it to sync Facebook contact photos to native phone app contacts originally.
Most likely I will also use either it or this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.contapps.android - looks very decent as a full People+Dialer replacement app

Google is not being a douche here, Android has an open API allowing any app developer to sync stuff with contacts. Facebook just never updated their horribly outdated app to take advantage of this.(the API was released 2 Years ago)
So no it would not require facebook to release a people app but simply to update their existing app.
This is exactly what the third party apps does, and they work fine BTW. Since they run entirely in the background it doesn't matter that they look unofficial, I never see the app itself. So there is no need to use a replacement for the people app.
Never did understand why more didn't follow HTC's contact sync set up. So simple, intuitive and seamless.
Hey, we see you have 4 John Smiths.. under FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, and your main contacts.. shall we merge? Voila, done. And you get to use their FB photo as the default.
Why they wouldn't make contact integration easier is beyond me..

It's simple, just because facebook is large doesn't mean they get preferential treatment(like on ios, where only twitter and facebook is integrated). On android any app can do this(facebook included), but it is required for the app itself to do the sync of the contacts.

But why not allow that as an option at the Android OS level to allow permission is what I don't get. The FB android app also hasn't synced my contacts in forever (to include photo).

Please read my previous post! It is allowed... Any developer can add sync options(this is exactly what the thirdparties like haxsync does). The reason your facebook app sync doesn't work is, that they hacked in a solution that worked on 2.2 and earlier versions of android, but as the official api was introduced, and facebook was breaking the rules, this exploit was removed, and facebook just hasn't updated to use the official api.
read about the official api here: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/contacts-provider.html
What HTC and others does is, that they either hack in the old exploit allowing the facebook app to sync again or they simply write their own app which uses the official api to sync fb contacts and pics.(this is identical to downloading an app like haxsync).
I ended up installing Contacts+ and am quite happy with it...
