Nexus v SGS2 twitter scroll lag test. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Since the new twitter app was launched i've noticed its quite "choppy" and lags when scrolling up and down., not really done anything about it and passed it of as being the new app.
However.
I was just messing with my mates SGS2 and noticed he had twitter so thought i'd try it out.
I put them both to the top of the twitter updates and flicked them to make them scroll down simultaniously.
The SGS2 scrolls flawlessly until it stops then the phone retrieves the twitter photos of the status's that are displayed.
My nexus is very very laggy and seems to be retrieving the photos as it scrolls (which could be the cause)
Has anyone noticed this or similar with other apps?

Known problem, there's a thread in the app section about this. You could either use Tweakdeck or enable 'Force hardware acceleration' in the developer option menu. I would recommend the first, very very smooth. The second option does work (you'll notice the regular Twitter app will be as smooth as on the SGS2), but might cause problems with different apps. It will most likely be fixed with the next update (i may hope), it's quite simple to fix from what I understand.

Thanks you your reply, i've never noticed that option before (force) and it does indeed remove the lag.
What exactly is the issue then? it's also present in the facebook app (solved by ticking the force box) and what issues may it cause other apps

Turn "force 2D gfx accel" (or something similar) in developer settings. It'll fix Twitter issue.

And possibly create problems with other apps not yet compatible with HW acceleration when forced on. Just a heads up for the OP if he runs into problems with other apps.

Just done a bit of reading on the developer option so appologise for the duplicate question on the forum.
So it seems its an app issue rather than the phone, which in a way is a good thing.
Have just tried Tweakdeck... Like .
Thanks

No problems, as long as they are in the appropriate thread, posting questions is absolutely fine. For twitter, the developer will have to manually add this option, to use GPU, to their app. It'll happen in an update, got nothing to do with our phones! But Paul OBrien recently adjusted Tweetdeck, thereby changing it to Tweakdeck, to play nicely with our GN's. So that's a perfect alternative! Enjoy

Got an example of a problem in an app caused by force enabling GFX acceleration. Twitter is terrible slow/laggy. Thinking of forcing GPU accel but wondering if anyone knows any app with known issue with this? Surely non of the google apps?
edit: A forget it. I tried twitter with forced GPU and it barely made much difference. tiny bit smoother. but nothing like the old twitter app. zzz

How to fix Multi tasking?

okay, to start off. i've tried to search the forum about multi tasking issue, but found nothing to answer my question, every time i'm doing something, then minimized the app to do something else, then go back to the previous app, the screen is not the same anymore, seems like its restarting.. is there a way to fix this?

It's a new sense feature which hibernates the background apps in order to keep maximum ram available for your new activities. I don't completely agree with the idea. To accommodate Sense, which gulps up so much resources, so we end up with "iphonish" multitasking. Sad.

HTC said its a Feature not a Bug, so I am not sure if it will be "fixed".
But recently I have heard that the newest update has modified this "Feature", the system can keep some certain apps (like browser) in background.
If the update wont work for you, maybe you can try disabling this setting>developers options>do not keep activities, then it will keep 3, ONLY 3 apps in background, but your 4th app will face the same "feature". And this setting can drain your battery fast.
Correct me please if I am wrong

[ROM][JB]UNOFFICIAL Codename Android 3.3.1-- questions

I can't ask in the dev forum and I don't see a General thread for this ROM. Since this seems to be the best JB rom for our phone, we probably need to have a place to discuss things outside of the Dev thread. Anyway, I have some specific things I want to ask about...
1. Lock Screen question -- Is there a way to add actions like the unlock or mute? I wanted to put the unlock in a different spot but don't know what Slider shortcut to use. I have tried looking through both the Activities and the Nova Activities. I just don't see how to do either of those two. Anyone know, short of installing another app or lock screen?
2. GMail double notification -- I may have done something wrong, but I can't find it right now. When I get a GMail email, I get two notifications. They are both the GMail symbol. And the notification drawer shows two items, one with a big chunk of the preview and one with the subject and "Important". I suspect I did something in GMail to cause this and it isn't ROM specific.
3. Pandora doesn't seem to work. I think I saw in the Dev thread mention of people having issues too. I only ever use it at work where I only have 3G, so I haven't tested on WiFi. What is irritating is that on my last ICS ROM I was running I had this issue solved by uninstalling it, rebooting and clearing caches, and reinstalling. I have tried that and fixing permissions. All in multiple orders and combinations, no luck.
Other than those three things and the standard 4G/FFC known issues, this is a great ROM. Thank you Mazda.
#1 issue.........this will come in the next update, stay tuned and it will come
#2 issue.........Try to uninstall gmail and install it again, I use gmail most then anything and I've yet to get this issue
#3 issue.........What exactly is the issue with Pandora?? If is a FC or something, could you pull a logcat and post it on pastebin and then provide me with the link?
Thanks and look forward to improving the ROM and making it great!

Great, thanks for the response.
#1, yea, it will work the way it is, I just thought the existing actions would do it and I just missed which one.
#2, thanks for that idea, don't know why I didn't think of reinstall, I guess I had it in my mind that Gmail is part of OS, not really a specific app. I just did it and will test. I am sure that will fix it since I think I did something obscure.
#3, Pandora acts like it is all working, I have logged in and have my playlists but when I select something is just doesn't play the music, sits on a song for some time (maybe buffering but not always) and then moves to the next song and tries to play that one but never does, then next song. Never playing music...
Thanks again for both responding and for the work on the ROM.
Just a thought on #2, but go in to your account settings and make sure you don't have notification settings for more than one inbox (ex. Inbox and Priority Inbox). I've had this happen in the past. Just change your account settings.

Sorry, I should have posted again. Reinstalling worked for me. But I think you are right in your suspecision, I think I might have had that Priority Inbox checked. Reinstalling resulted to starting over with configuring it though. I think it all started going downhill when I didn't have the sync set right, so I wasn't getting notified due to the sync not running, then start checking everything. Thanks.
Now the only mystery I have left is Pandora...
Not sure what the deal might be with Pandora. I've used it on and off in the past with mixed success. It might be worth seeing if it works with a different ROM. That might narrow down where the issue is, at least.

[Q] Anyone else notice some lag after the first few days? need help if you have!

So i've only had the phone for a few days and started noticing lag mainly in the settings yesterday.
It was buttery smooth the first few days until yesterday. I'll try to create a clear description of what is happening.
Everything in terms of hitting applications, sliding/switching pages, and browsers seems smooth but I'm getting doubts since settings have started lagging. So as of now, the settings menu is where I really notice the problem. What happens is I would press any of the choices such as display, sound, storage, etc and it would light up blue as a sign that I pressed it. Basically, the blue lighting stutters/lags as it turns into a deeper color and fades away proving that there is some lag. That itself is very irritating on such a powerful phone. The page also lags a bit as it's opening so it's obvious that it does lag. I don't understand why something as simple as settings might be causing this?
have any of you guys noticed this? I tried clearing ram, restarting phone, messing with dev options by changing animation and something else to .5x while enabling "force GPU rendering." I'm running stock touchwiz on baseband T889UVALJ1 if that helps. Keep in mind i'm not really tech savvy so try to suggest things in an easy to understand way please.
Any help is greatly appreciated and I hope you guys can help me fix my problem!
Been using it for the past 1 month plus and I do not have any lagging issues. I am on stock rom as well.
No lag either, been using the Note 2 for 2 months now. Check your apps with BetterBatteryStatts (too many backgroundservices runing).
No lag either. Did u install some crappy apps that run backstage

Thanks for the replies so far and before I spend some money on apps or what not, is there any way I can post a 5 second animation of what is happening? Kind of like a 5 second gif of my screen? A mix of a screenshot and video so like a screen vid? Are there are any apps that can do that(preferably free). I'll try to find an app that can do that in the meantime and will edit if I find something useful.
Edit: No idea what this is or how it ended up on my phone but could this be the culprit? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tgrape.android.radar
People say it's bloatware and s-suggest from samsung but i'm not sure why it would be shown as an app on the play store website
I have noticed the phone can lag a bit if you have a heavy live wallpaper running.
Just sharing my thoughts on this
did you modify anything? no lags on my N2.
normally i'd say if you leave your phone on for a few days in a row, clear the memory every once in a while (press and hold home, go task manager, ram tab, clear memory) or reboot it, just so you dont have anything residual in your ram.
when android sees that you have 2gb of ram, it doesnt auto kill as many apps as it would if you were to have only 1gb of ram (my note 1 autokilled sooooooo frequently that it was annoying), so your ram ends up getting filled with some apps that you only used once in a while.

I wrote that I tried clearing ram and restarting phone but it didn't help. Thanks for trying though
Yeah, I get a bit of lag here and there, specially if I haven't cleared running/background apps in a while.
I just do it from the task manager, and also check out what apps are using the most battery, and possibly therefore are some of the likely culprits.
I actually use this app called Carat, which is an "Energy bug detector app" (whatever that means), but it helps identify apps that are draining the battery, and incidentally, partially contributing to the lag.
Also obvious thing like live wallpapers or touchwiz in general (including all the 'special' Samsung features like smart rotate, smart stay, smart motion) probably add to it to. Nova launcher and a static wallpaper might help.
I'll try to post a video sometime soon showing the lag. It's not serious lag, but it does stutter and lag a decent amount compared to my first few days which is what sucks.

You can try enabling Force GPU rendering in developers options. That usually helps with that, or at least it seemed to in my case. Report back if it actually helped
quick update:
I found a vid and my lag basically looks like this http://youtu.be/0qyijcTeHcU?t=2m27s
Look at when he clicks on display, there is clearly some lag even if it is half a second - 1 second. I'm almost certain that my lag is even worse than that, but not by too much. It's just a pain in the ass after the first few days. Would flashing a custom rom like jedi X 7.2 help out with this since it's running a bravia engine?

Screen Overlay Detected

If this is in the wrong thread then please move to correct one.
Has anyone else had issues with this... I'll call it problem, but by the way it behaves, it seems more like its a bug.
It has only been something I've seen on Marshmallow. Try to install an app, and its 50/50 whether or not you get "screen overlay detected"
Try to give an app permission, "screen overlay detected".
I should also point out that it isnt just restricted to HTC. My partners (now apparently ticking time bomb) s7 has also had the issue
You can disable as many screen overlays as you like, it still doesnt go away.
I've noticed now, too, that anytime a chat head from facebook messenger is on screen when I try to do something like install an app, it will spit out that problem until I close the chat head. Which was never an issue, ever, before.
Where has this thing come from and why is it even a problem for Android?
Those chat heads on the messenger as well as light filters, as e.g. CF.lumen, are always screen overlays. Those overlays could read out the whole screen, and thus as well what you're typing into banking apps or similar. Thus Google updated the privacy policy of their devices in Marshmallow, ending up in this specific error message. Sometimes it's enough to just turn the screen overlay of via settings > apps, regarding Apps like FB Messenger, CF.lumen, and the like, on other times and Apps you got to reboot the device after done so, or disable the overlay within the Apps settings as well, and seldomly you got to uninstall such an App to get the problem sorted for the time being. At least that's what I could find out searching the web.

It's so malicious apps don't replace the install button with something else (like an install button to install something else).
It's quite clever if you think about it.

In theory I would say it's clever. In practice, it doesn't distinguish between safe apps that are harmless and those that aren't.

Since Facebook messenger (and pretty much all my apps, most of which don't even have screen overlays but are in the list for it) was downloaded from Google play, I would imagine it isn't difficult to implement a system that flags it as safe.
If an app is installed via an apk, even if it is safe, I would understand more the need for concern. You never know, etc.

It would be difficult to implement a system like that. You never know which app is fake or real. Maybe it was a modified version of the app, you'll never know.
Either way, the feature is there and if you want to install an app just quickly turn off your overlay. Not exactly a big problem.

Battery drain issues

I've been experiencing battery drain issues with random apps even after shutting off permissions for those apps and shutting off background activity. These apps have also been added to battery optimization.
I've noticed this happens when I open the app and then shut them down, by swiping away from recent apps screen - verified by reopening the app and it never is in the memory and reloads. But they still continue to drain the battery in the background (as can be seen on the screenshot with battery drainers). Facebook is a usual culprit but not the only one, there is generally a few of them as you can see there are some games too. This pretty much keeps changing to different apps every now and then. I feel I'm doing something wrong which is really causing this drain.. every now and then. Any suggestions / opinions?
Thanks!

To add, I'm on the latest firmware with May security update (the one has been persistent throughout before and even now) ans not rooted.
How many time you do it ? Because it consumes less battery to keep them in memory than to reload all the apps every time you use them.

Just a pointer re Facebook.
Take a look at your System apps in Device /Settings /App category
Look for Facebook... and you will see other 3 x Facebook related
apps also listed ..!
You shut Facebook down but the Facebook Services, Facebook App Manager.. etc...? is still running and suckling battery.?
See my screen snip.
I most probably don't need to remind you that Facebook,
has over the past years, been fingered/known, to drain battery
.
My solution, which you most likely won't l "ike"
is to temporarily disable Facebook and the other Facebook related system apps.
Uninstall the one small Game or both??
and see if there is a improvement ?
Good luck.

That's the issue, Facebook doesn't really bother me but the games (or other apps like Twitter or tiktok or Instagram) do. And it's not always Facebook or these specific games. It's different each day - any apps I more frequently used that day continue to stick there consuming power. Every day it's a different set of apps. But wondering why stick causing a drain!

yes ,
Firstly ,
over the years ,i have been a few times, in similar "position" than you, re apps and battery draining .!
I know it's very frustrating ..annoying .....
and in the end i always ended up doing a factory reset . !!
I use a cross section of a different "set " of tools eg BettterbatteryStats ,Wakelock Detector lite ,Gsam Battery etc . ( all ADB enabled) to try and pinpoint the culprit ..
Unfortunately ,the permutation/reasons can be many ??
eg You installed and uninstalled an app and "something " eg System settings got corrupted .?
You disabled /freezed ,an System app and it has an knock on effect .
You did some mod /hack or maybe a sideloaded app thats causing it ..?
App that you installed that's badly coded .
It also could be that when you did an OTA to latest firmware that something/system ,got corrupted..?
Bottom line ,
You sitting with a very irritating/frustrating issue .
Your options is either to live with it ? or try and find the culprit ?
or doing a factory reset .?
Yes, i know you most likely, don't favor a factory reset.
As stated i always ended up doing a factory,on the spur of the moment !!!
Then doing a clean install from scratch ..a few apps at a time .......
Anyway it's your choice .??
Good luck .

I'm thinking if there's some way to reset all permissions and reconfigure them as the apps require? That has fixed things for me in the past.
Factory reset isn't an easy option for me because of RSA apps configured on the phone otherwise I've got to go through a few calls to get access - sorta irritating.
Hopeful something works but until then I'm letting it be lol.
Thanks!

I understand above if you say factory reset is an issue.!
I have a app call Bouncer paid (Play Store) installed on my device.
Don't think there is a free version, cannot remember, as I've had it for a while.
It basically controls your app permissions.
You can configure it to automatically remove permissions after using relevant app.
Also you can reset permissions.
It might help you.?
You can Google around a and see reviews.
To give you a idea, look at my screenshot.
Sorry, can't give any links, as it a paid app.
Good luck

Purchased the app. Kinda handy, but even after rule once set, when you come out of the app, you need to remove the permissions (the overlay window on top requests for removal) - that sorta adds work opening / closing apps.
My battery issues have improved immensely by putting the Facebook app in deep sleep. Battery life now is pretty decent.
check find my mobile.apk and samsung internet browser.apk if at all installed official apps from apkmirror etc the uninstall that apk and go through galaxy store but in galaxy store dont update findmymobile.apk

I suggest you take another look at your Bouncer settings.
You can auto remove it.
I had it on this setting but, change it to lock notifications, as i had better control.
Also remember to back up your Bouncer settings.
If ever you make a mistake you can just import you permission settings.
I forgot to do this a one stage and had to redo over Bouncer 200 apps.. Permissions...!
Otherwise if not sure as dev of Bouncer, for assistance
Good luck
