I am currently running Calk's rom 2.5 that was "based off EL13 build." My kernel version in about phone says: "2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL13-CL806482. and build is "Calkulin's E4GT Rom v2.5."
But my Baseband version says S:d710.10 S.EG30. Am I able to upgrade my baseband version to EL13 or does Calk's rom already do that for me?
Thanks in advance for any help

You can flash the EL13 modem in CWM using the appropriate CWM MDM link in my signature.
I am in a similar situation. I currently have:
Android 2.3.4
Baseband: S710.10 S.EG30
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EG30-CL435734
ROM: midNIGHT ROM v2.2 NOCIQ ET4G
I want to install this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
How would I go about doing this? I know how to use ODIN to flash stuff, also know how to use Clockwork to flash from phone, but I'm a newbie in this area and I don't want to brick my phone.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Just use CWM and flash the ROM. It'll install the ROM and the kernel. You can flash your radio at a later point from CWM also.
On the thread of the ROM I want, it says:
"Important Notes - Due to how this ROM is setup, a wipe is recommended BEFORE flashing if coming from another ROM(use FORMAT ALL attached)"
Does this mean that before installing the ROM I need to format the whole phone (minus the SD card)?
Thank you for your help!

The Modem, Kernel, and ROM are separate entities. This thread started off talking about modems, but now you are switching to talking about a ROM. Just wanted to clarify that in case things are getting mixed up.
If the ROM says you need to FORMAT all, that usually means if you are coming from a different ROM, you should do that. If you are upgrading from one version of that ROM to another, usually you won't need to format all, but sometimes you might. Ask your question on the ROM-specific discussion thread.
Thank you for your help. I tried to post on the ROM post but I couldn't due to being a passive user and the Development forums requiring a certain number of posts.
I backed up EVERYTHING with MyBackup Pro just now and I will format ALL, format cache, dalvik-cache, anything that says "erase" on CWM I will do ... and I'll report back with how it all went.
Thank you again for your helpful post.
Hey guys. New guy here to rooting. Thanks to sfhub my first attempt was a success.
This is my current set up.
android 2.3.6
baseband s:d710s.ek02
kernel 2.6.35.7-sph-d710.ek02-cl704398
Rom New Senzation v1.7.
I also want to run Caulks' rom but I am not sure if I can on the ek02 modem. Would I have to flash to el13 to be able to use this rom?
Sorry if the terminologies are wrong still trying to get used to and understand all of this.

Even though theoretically it is best to keep the Modem, Kernel, and ROM matched since they were tested together, in practice folks haven't had issues with mix and matching. Now with CWM flashable FULL modems for EG30/EG31/EK02/EL13, it is very easy to switch after the ROM flash. Just make sure your kernel is based off the newer EK02/EL13 to flash the FULL modems.

What do you want to revert? Modem, Kernel, ROM, or all three?
If all three, the easiest is to use the EG30 ODIN tar in my signature then apply the EK02 update immediately afterwards.
Hi all, I've been reading a lot of threads around here about safely flashing our phone. I'd like to verify somethings before I go around flashing things.
It is my understanding that its ok to go from any rom to any rom using sfhubs odin oneclick methods. Is this correct?
It is also my understanding that I can flash any rom (unless otherwise stated) from CWM recovery safely if I am back to EL26+CWM using ODIN.
I have some confusion about this. Currently I am on a stock EL29 unrooted build, if I want to flash an ICS rom would I flash the EL26+CWM tar via ODIN and then use CWM to wipe and flash ICS? Is it also required that I flash an applicable kernel along with the rom?
Also I have never used odin before. Do I need to install this program from somewhere first before I can flash things?
Do I need to root my existing EL29 setup before I can flash the EL26+CWM tar?
Sorry for the huge number of noob questions, I just don't want to take chances with my phone. I'm an HTC guy and things seem to be done very very differently there. I'm very interested in trying the upcoming date to the Blend ICS "The Goodness" rom.

1. Yes as long ad you get into download mode
2. Yes
3. Yes but usually roms come with a kernel that works already, check OP for each
4. Yes get either mobile Odin from the market or get it on ur PC (best to have both)
5. Yes you have to be rooted to flash anything

The best advice I can give you is to look up qbking77 on youtube. He has step by step how to videos on rooting and flashing your E4GT.
Start here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc&feature=plcp
He has a link in the description on how to add CWM
Ill tell ya right now I would not recommend flashing an ICS rom it is soo buggy I hate it! I just installed the tablet one I forget what it is called but nothing but force closes even when ya aint doing anything it will just force close on ya. Stick with gingerbread untill there is a final release for ics trust me. Way to buggy right now!
I must agree with RB!
I would not mess with ICS if you are new to this phone (and even some that are not ). If you really like your phone, I would recommend trying out the many Gingerbread roms for a while. It is a much safer and far more stabile learning platform than ICS.
As far as flashing ICS I would check out one of the official leaked builds before trying out a custom ROM. I've noticed that some people seem to have different problems even though we all have the same phone. The changes from GB to ICS were enough to drive me nuts sometimes, but I've been using the leaked builds with minimal problems for the last few weeks. The newest one is FE10 and is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648045
I have to say I take back what I said I was getting all those force closes but then I did another factory data reset and now it is running smooth and I am LOVING ICS!!! You should check out the Hydra Rom by team Venum it is soo sick! It makes your phone like a tablet!!!
True you can use either Odin or Mobile Odin (and it is best to have both). But I find Mobile Odin much more convenient. I always keep an the EL26+CWM tar and an ICS Tar (Kernals) on my phone at all times. It is much safer to do anything on the EL26 kernal such as wiping, flashing, nanding, and etc. Even if you are on an ICS rom you can Mobile Odin to the EL26 kernal flash whatever you want, and lastly flash back to an ICS kernal and reboot. That is about as safe as you can be. Like the other posters said though try out some GB roms first there are many great developers, and these roms generally have far less risk associated with them. I am currently running Epic Venum Rom and it is great. Happy flashing!
Yea ya see sometimes when people ask for opinions on here I say try it yourself because its different for everyone. My battery life compared to yours and my user experience compared to yours. I am on Codename and have 0 issues and honestly dont even need an upgrade. I could rock this ICS till my next phone.
Hey OP do yourself a favor read yo ass off up in here and please please please follow directions to the "t" and just try out a few roms

LMAO RB. You're really gonna confuse the guy now.
Thanks for all the informative responses all. I think I mostly have this down now.
I rooted my stock build with sfhub's odin OC, then used sfhub's autorooting utility to flash EL26+CWM. Got into CWM and wiped everything a few times and then flashed Blu Kuban ICS.
Now that I tried this, if I want to try a different rom should I just Odin OC back to my rooted EL29 build and repeat the process or would it suffice to just use the autorooting utility, flash EL26+CWM and then flash my new rom?
Can anyone recommend me an ICS rom that is fairly similar to a stock ICS experience? It doesn't have to be CM9 or AOKP. I'm just tired of Samsung's cartoony icons and themes. "The goodness" seemed interesting.
Also what is the best Gingerbread rom around here in case I decide to stick to that? Any that are themed like ICS?
Also if I wanted to, I could go from my blu kuban ICS rom straight to FE10 using the Odin OC safely right?

Thanks for the help all. I settled on tFE10_v0.1.0, a tweaked version of the FE10 leak. It's also skinned to look like stock ICS and I'm using it with the ICS launcher instead of TW.
Smooth, stable and good battery life so far. I'm quite happy with it.

Odin OC back to EL29. It is HIGHLY recommended that you not flash GB kernels on ICS roms, so flashing EL26 from ICS is not ideal. Insofar as rom i was on goodness until just recently, which is great, but recently switched to AOKP build 35, which is AMAZING

I would just flash el26+cwm from mobile odin/odin and boot into recovery. Once there just wipe and flash like you did for Blu Kuban. You don't have to go back to GB ROM, just need el26+cwm. As stated above it is unsafe to flash to el26+cwm using ICS recovery, but is safe to Odin/Mobile Odin to it. I always have stockel26cwm.tar, an AOSP kernel, a stock ICS kernel, and whatever ROMs I'm currently using. I also always have Mobile Odin and Root Explorer installed.

Wow you just saved me a whole lot of time. This whole time I was under the impression you had to odin back to Gingerbread rooted, reinstall CWM before flashing another ICS rom. I never knew you just needed the el26 kernal! Thank you! Quick question though what slot do you put the kernal in the PDA?
Here's a direct link to the stock el26+cwm: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR
I believe you use PDA slot. I use Mobile Odin as I'm always at work and never near a computer. I do believe there is a free lite version on these forums somewhere or its $4.99 on Play Store, but it is a huge time saver as I flash a new ROM several times a week at least(currently addicted to HyDrA).

thanks kill, i was odin OC back to EL29 before each flash, i will adopt your method going forward, i should have realized this a long time ago...
No problem. Just trying to save you some time/effort. One more thing though since I don't think it was ever mentioned. You should always verify the md5 checksum before flashing anything. There are free apps on the Play store to check with and most developers post a checksum by there downloads.

Hey all,
First off thank you for any insight you guys can/will provide. Trying to understand the inter working of my new E4GT, I've had an Evo 4G since launch day. On the EVO the ROMS and Radios could be and usually flashed separately and usually never flashed the radio unless it was borked. In going thru the forums and reading Rooting process and adding CWM to your phine you need to use the same modem name???? I know my ROM is EL29 based? thats what is shown in the Broadband, Kernel and build number. I've seen rooting and mod for like EL13 and EK03 and EGXX..... please help me or point me to a post to understand what EL29 is vs EK03.... is that the ROM version you are using?? and if so why isn't everyone on the lastest version... IN HTC EVO land it 4.67.xxx.
Thanks again for any help
Questions belong in questions but enough of that.
Our phones firmware numbers are date based on the build date, Korea time of course. EG30, EK02 and EL29 where the official gingerbread builds. 2011 July 30th for EG30. 2011 December 29th for EL29. Current leak is FE10 which is 2012 May 10th. Slight misconception among some people that the first letter is the OS version but anyone with an Epic 4G can tell you that is not true.
Ok based on your comment of the 3 Official versions, is the reason ppl don't migrate to the latest official version based on the fact there is slightly different hardware versions that would cuz OS incompatibilities ?

They probably have their reasons but most people are on EL29. I know some people are on custom roms based on say the EL13 leak etc. Some of the things you might be reading for rooting EK02 and back are because there was an exploit for those but not for EL13 to EL29.
The modems are based off the same number scheme and except for EG31 all match the release they came with. Someone might run EL29 rom with an EG30 modem because they feel they get better performance so don't be confused by that mismatch. Edit - I guess that answers your other question btw, you can use any modem with any firmware.
EL13 and up have Carrier IQ removed officially so I would think that a decent reason to upgrade. But the only difference in OS version in the official builds was 2.3.3 to 2.3.6 so I dont think there is much to worry about there. Current leaks are for 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Awesome, that really help my understanding of the E4GT environment. So EL29 is the most current stock ota rom. Custom roms are based on various levels of stock roms and leaked roms. Modems/radio levels are like that in EVO land were ppl have various fw levels based on the mileage they get based on device/location.

Yup. I guess I will cover a few things I can think of for you.
EG30 and EK02 were rootable using the zergrush exploit which is patched after 2.3.3. If you were on either one of those you can use sfhub's AutoRooter - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728. On EL29 we rely on ODIN, the easiest way is to just use a prerooted ODIN One Click - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
To return to stock unrooted if you have done no modifications the Auto Rooter will allow for unroot on any version it supports which includes EL29. You can flash a stock unrooted tar for EL29. Or what I usually do is the One click for EK02 and just OTA to EL29 which will leave you on a stock unrooted EL29.
If you are rooted and need CWM the auto rooter is a good place to get it. I think for EL29 it gives Rogue Recovery which was the last one we have and then there is a kernel for EL26 done by chris41g which has stock CWM and is popular for flashing ICS and AOSP ICS roms. Recovery on ICS is dangerous at the moment so people flash back to gingerbread or gingerbread kernels for that.
I was able to figure out how to use the One Click root for the EL29 and then found the utility to add the CWM Rogue Custom recovery... but stopped there. I used Caulkin's Evo GB rom on my EVO and liked it a lot, was thinking I may try his ICS rom, but holding off for now.
Its very different flashing the custom recovery on the E4GT vs EVO.
You might give his EL29 rom a whirl I used to use it. I wouldn't play with the ICS rom until you have played with the stock ICS rom its based off. That way you understand whats causing what and the changes that have been made.
This thread might help you. It has a link for pretty much everything you need to know about the epic touch.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391732
Added bit of info, recoveries are packed in the kernel so it is NOT persistent like the evo was. The recovery will change to whatever was repacked into the kernel you are using or revert to stock recovery if it hasn't been repacked with a custom. AOSP ICS roms have no custom recovery included and should not have one added unless you want to brick your phone, for everything recovery on any ICS, IMO, you should always Odin or mobile Odin el26+cwm kernel/recovery and use that. To create a backup Odin/mOdin the el26+cwm kernel create your backup and flash an appropriate kernel to boot back into your rom when restoring do the same, odin/mOdin el26+cwm restore your nandroid and flash an appropriate kernel. Any time you do anything in recovery on ICS like flashing a theme, modem, add on, etc you will have to flash a kernel afterwards to boot your rom, with the exception of flashing a rom itself as it will include the kernel, so unless you want to use a different kernel than what comes included you won't have to flash a kernel after flashing the rom itself

could I just use the One Click root method for the EL26 that I used to first get root? I used the non data wiping version, could I use that, or would I have to use the data wiping version?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
All u need to use is the kernel, you don't need the entire rom so use just regular Odin v1.85 and put the el26+CWM in the PDA slot and flash then when your phone reboots hold volume+ and power or pull the battery and hold volume+ and power when you turn the phone on, EL26 won't boot an ICS rom so it will just boot loop at the sgs screen. Or you can use Mobile Odin and flash the kernel from your phone, reboot to recovery is same volume+ and power when it reboots or pull battery and volume+ and power. Personally I use mobile Odin since it doesn't trigger the yellow triangle, however I have a copy of the kernel and Odin 1.85 on my PC in case I bootloop when I'm on ICS with no recovery. Triangle away takes care of the yellow triangle and flash counter from an ICS rom for when I use PC based Odin. You can use either the free version of mobile Odin that's here on xda or the paid version on the market, $5 is definitely a fair price for how versitile and convienent the app is. If you use the free version from xda make sure you grab a copy of the sph-d710 flash kernel from the thread where you get mobile Odin cuz it won't automatically download it like the paid version does. You can use the one click method as long as its the one with CWM and not a rogue repack but it's quicker easier and safer to use just the kernel+recovery tar file so you know you always have the right recovery. I just have a copy on my internal and external SD cards and a copy on each of my Computers just in case I have some kind of data corruption I always have a copy in an emergency

Hey everyone,
About 4 months ago when I got my new Epic 4g touch I rooted the phone with autoroot and installed calkulins rom which I now have at version 2.6. I am also using an ICS theme. What do I now have to do in order to get the newest modem and custom ICS roms installed on my phone? Since autoroot is no longer functional I have heard that I will have to install the stock rom and modem on my phone and then use odin to install new modems.... Is this the case? Does anyone have links to stock roms and modems I should use before I proceed into using Odin?
Thanks!

You have few options:
1. If you want latest stock rooted rom just flash sfhubs one click FF18 rooted rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
2. If you want any of the custom TW (stock based) roms read thru threads, see which one you like most download the rom and copy to your sd card.
Boot to recovery. Wipe/factory reset (you're on GB rom and you're not risking to brick your phone) and apply zip in recovery.
Rom will flash kernel as well and you will have rooted ICS rom on your phone.
Download CWM modem zip file from sfhub's thread and flash it in recovery as well.
3. If you want AOSP/AOKP/CM rom just read the installation instructions in OP and follow them.
If you have more questions, ask....
Thanks!!
So sprint plugged the autoroot feature but I am still able to download any ICS rom on my current setup (after full wipe) and install through my CWM and it will work? I am on the EK02 modem, I am able to upgrade to ICS modems without using Odin?
if you have custom recovery you can flash CWM modem zip from sfhubs tread in recovery.
If you don't have custom recovery use sfhubs autoroot package to flash EK02 kernel with CWM recovery and than flash rom and modem in recovery.
Sprint din't include anything for us. It's all done by a great developer sfhub.
With Sasmung devices and their ODIN support, you aren't really required to have root to flash anything. In other devices(HTC), you need to have a exploit to root them so that you have Read/write access to certain partitions that you wouldn't normally, thus allowing you to flash.
Hey guys, I have a few questions about flashing cm 10.1 wild for the night to my epic 4g touch on sprint. Im not new to this kind of stuff (i put android on my HP touchpad when development for android on it was fairly new successfully) but ive never flashed any roms on my E4GT. I have my phone rooted on GB27, besides for that its all stock though. I havent messed with any modems or custom recoveries or anything like that. Anyways, here are my questions:
How do I flash Clockwork mod?
Do I want to flash the ICS modem before or after the installation of CM? And do I have to have Clockwork Mod installed to flash the modem using mobile odin?
And should I basically follow QBkings video on it after installing CWM and the modem?
Thanks everyone!

First... mobile Odin will not flash modem's correctly..
Second.. I like to flash my modem first ( if I'm already on touchwiz ) because I can update my prl/profile..you can't update them on aosp/aokp/cm roms..
Third... use Odin on you're PC to flash cwm recovery...never use rom manager on this device... really you could use mobile Odin to flash.. remember that our recoveries are tied to the kernel's on this device..
Since you're already rooted you can use a little guide I made for flashing using mobile Odin... I can find the post if you want..
