Ah!! I think I know what you're talking about. You can't link the Notification Volume with the Ringtone Volume.
If you don't want an app, you have to manually go into settings and lower it from there.
I use an app called Volume Control +
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.cb.volumePlus&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jYi52b2x1bWVQbHVzIl0.
It's free even though you see a plus.
There is a feature in the app that let's you link your Notifying Sound with your Ringtone sound, so whenever you lower or raise your Ringtone sound using the Vol keys, the Notify Sound will raise or lower with it.
Open App
Hit Menu
Go to Settings
Go to System Settings
Check "Link ring and notification"
Viola.
Have the same issue, and I hated too.

Controlling all sounds wit volume rocker buttons

I've noticed that when using a program like handsent sms that the sounds are not part of the ringer.. they are under notifications.. so for instance if I lower my volume wit my rocker buttons to lowest setting but still on ring. And recieve a txt thru handsent the ring will be still loud to what ever the notification ring is set to.. my question is a tweak or something that allows the rocker buttons to control all sound ? Not just ranger volume?

wrong section ...
... but
if you go under settings, sounds, volume you can make the ringtone and notifications move in sync with each other.
There is also an app called audiomanager (free and paid versions) that lets you manage all 6 sound profiles separately. They are:
Alarm
Music
Alerts
Ringer
System
Voice call
and comes with a handy widget. Does not change the functionality of the volume rocker however.

[Q] Phone Ringtone and Notification Volume

Is there a way to link my phone ringtone and notification volume together?
On my G2x, under Settings > Sound > Volume, there was a checkbox to make the notification and ringtone volume the same. So when I pressed the volume down button to turn my ringtone volume down, it would also turn my notification volume down. But on the GSII, I can bring my ringtone volume down low, but my notifications will still blare. The only way to adjust the notification volume is by going all the way into the sound settings.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a newborn at home, and when I'm home, i want my sounds low, but when I leave the house, I want everything back all the way up. I don't want to have to go into the sound settings each time I need to raise/lower my notification volume.
Maybe an app?
Thanks!
Get Quick Settings from the Market. It has that option. I only get that app for this exact reason.

Silent everything instead of just the ringer

How can I make my gnexus go completely silent when I put it on vibrate/silent mode? I don't what apps to make any sound when I turn down the volume all the way using the volume buttons. Right now I have to go to settings>sounds and change it there.
Oh and is there a way to force it to always vibrate even on silent mode?

1. You can turn down just the media volume. That volume can be adjusted with the volume buttons too, you need to let media make a sound and then press the volume button.
You can also search for volume widgets on the market, I bet there are some that will suit your needs.
2. You can set vibrate in sound setting to "always".

1. That's the problem though. I'm sitting in class and open an app and suddently it starts playing a music. Even the sound of taking a screen shot is unaffected when phone is on silent.
2. I can not find this option in Settings>Sound. I have "Vibrate and Ring" which is set to enabled but it does not affect silent mode.
I use an app called RealSilent off the market. Its free and does what you need.
Use Audio Manager, or something similar. There's plenty of apps out there...
I use quick setting app.....has all volume settings on one page to change values of basically everything

You could also use a profiles app and create a profile that silences everything. (And also a profile that brings everything back up to volumes you like when it's not silenced.)
Thanks everyone I'll try the market
I believe the actual problem is that ICS has combined notification volume and ringer volume in to 1 volume. I haven't seen any of those apps mentioned above, but how can they possibly get around this newly imposed restriction in ICS??
I use Llama for setting profiles on my ICS Nexus S and it warns you about this exact thing.
I've used Mute before on the SGS. Worked well there. I haven't used it yet for the Galaxy Nexus so I can't say if it's been updated for ICS.

Lol this isn't just ics
It was in gingerbread too
The notification and ringer volume are the same (and I actually prefer that)
And OP all you need to do is make the ringer silent, then go into a media app, something like music, power amp, even camera, and then turn down the media volume from there, its pretty simple

But not very practical to do this over and over. Its easier to have a toggle.
Phone on silent in class, open Tiny Tower, and BOOM you have tons of sounds lol. So I really need to find one that works. I used "silent toggle widget" on my G2, but it doesn't mute everything on the GNex.

Looks like "mute" works... when you hit the widget to mute everything, and go into "sound" settings, the ringer is silenced and the games/media sound is set to 0. I'll test more after class. Not gonna risk it right now
Also, the widget is kinda ugly but I think I can look past that if it does what I need.

Wrong. I'll let the picture do the talking instead of a petulant "lol".

[Q] How can I adjust media volume when phone is set to vibrate

I want to listen to music and other media applications on my phone but I want all other notifications set to vibrate. Is there a way to do this? Every time I put it on vibrate or silent mode I cannot adjust the media volume, it mutes it along with all others. I want to listen to music with my headphones but if my phone rings it will be on vibrate so others wont hear the ringing. I want all sounds to come through the earpiece would work also but I cannot find a way to do this either. This is with a bluetooth headset, not a wired headset.
I'm not sure but press the volume button at the left and press settings icon, move everything to zero (left) except media. . Hope it helps

As long as the ringtone volume is set to vibrate or mute it automatically mutes all the others and they are greyed out so you cant adjust them. If I move the ringtone volume over I can adjust them but then if I get a call my ringtone goes off!
If i set ringtone to zero then grey everything out as u say except media for me and thats what u wanted?

Yes I want ringtone to vibrate and be able to adjust media volume and not have it muted.

Set volume level for individual apps

Is it possible? I like to use viper studio because it allowed me to make the volume louder then usual, and This allows phone calls to wake me up out of my sleep (it's my job calling 90% of the time) but this also let's facebook notifications, emails, etc to wake me up. So I want phone calls to have Max volume, while other notifications to be not as loud

Notification and ringer volume are two different streams.. just adjust ringer volume Max and notification volume to min.

You could try LightFlow and it has different settings for apps that you can choose how the notification volume is set and controlled. It can also controll the volume as a relative volume to "x" or control the volume directly by itself too.
I'm sure ou can have a ball with the settings! I did, and it even shuts some of my apps up when I insert the charging cable. (only text messaging is announced when charging)
