I'm moving to the U.S. (california if that matters) in a couple of weeks and it's time for me to buy a desire. Being from Sweden I'm used to having great 3g service and use it well. What happens if i buy the phone here (not a U.S. specific model) and bring it overseas? Will 3g work? If so, can I choose from any carrier?

No it won't - a European Desire won't give you 3G on any US Network.

it all depends on which carrier you use. I have ATT and I bought my Telstra (made for AUZ) that uses the same band for 3g as ATT does and I get great 3g in SO CAL.
if you buy one in Sweden it will not work on 3g here. You can buy one from US Cellular and it will work here but they don't have that great of coverage. You can buy a EVO from Sprint, but you won't have a sim card.
If you buy a Telstra for the US it will work in Sweden (not sure about 3g) but you will have 3g in US on ATT when you get here. I bought my from here
Thank you, that was helpful information!
Is a Desire using the 850MHz band what I need?

I'm going to Florida on holiday next year. I intended on buying a prepaid sim for my Desire (from Orange, debranded and unlocked). I did intend using 3G if it were available but after reading some of these posts I'm now unsure this will work.
Much appreciated if anyone could give me any advice.
Many thanks.

if you have an EUR desire it will not work on 3g in the US, it has different bands. it will work for Edge. If the phone's bandwidth (networks) don't match the carrier's it does not matter what sim card you have. Most EUR world phone's will work in US but just not on 3g, it must be same bandwidth.
if you must have 3g for your hoilday then you are better buying a prepaid phone, but that won't be a Desire
Thanks for explanation, very helpful.
Hi!
Type *#*#4636#*#* in dial pad, you will get to a screen where some information and hidden settings placed in; then tap on the first item which is "telephone information", and there press "menu" button, here in the android menu the first item is "select radio-band"! when you choose this menu option you will see a list of GSM/UMTS radio-band alternatives; Automatic, EURO, USA, JAPAN, AUS, AUS2 bands"
Well I'm not expert on this particular issue, just wondering what these radio-band options are for(?) Maybe you can change your Desire's radio band to USA band and try if it works in the USA (appreciate if you supply feedback whether or not it really works)

You can't change bands that's hardware related, its cheaper to buy a TELUS desire, it has 850, 1900 bands

Unfortunately when the Telus Desire goes back to Sweden, it won't have 3G.
The US Cellular Desire won't work in Sweden at all since there's no CDMA carrier.
If it weren't so hard now to get a Nexus One I'd suggest that to you. Both version support Euro 3G and you'd use it on AT&T or T-Mobile in the US depending on which version you acquire.
The problem is, as far as I know, there are no tri-band 3G HTC Desires. There is 850/1900 (Telus), 850/2100 (Telstra) and 900/2100 (Euro). So Telstra is the only one that gives you some compromise of 3G on both continents.
On the other hand I'm pretty sure all the GSM North American Samsung Galaxy S phones (Bell Vibrant, AT&T Captivate, T-Mobile Vibrant) support the Euro 2100 band.
I'm getting sickband tired of all these us delays for the phone. At this point I'm thinking of just purchasing the UK phone and importing it to the US. Is the UK version same as the unlocked phone I would buy here in the states eventually? I have tmobile and as far as I know all unlocked nexus phone are same? Is that true? Also, where can I buy online in UK that will ship to the US?

They are the same. The phone is pentaband HSPA+. It'll get HSPA+ anywhere its available pretty much.
So to be clarify, the UK phone is basically same as unlocked nexus here and everything will work like 3g and 4g/hpsa+ here as well. What about updates. When Google pushes ota updates, will I get those same time as everyone else in states.

Mmmm... no. Downright confirmed to be sold on the 17th in the UK at most carriers and retailers (as of earlier today).
One nexus for all frequencies?
So, just to get a clear answer, will there only be one Galaxy Nexus to cover all GSM carriers, even for 3G?
I remember buying my Nexus One (which I'm still using) and I had to be careful to buy the correct variant so that I could use it back in Europe... only the T-Mobile variant would work.
My colleagues who have relocated to California have a few Android devices, including a couple of Nexus S, but since they purchased them in Europe they can't get 3G since the European Nexus S doesn't have AT&T's 3G frequencies, it would only work on T-mobile US.
I'm from Europe (but travelling for a couple of weeks in the US), so I was hoping to buy a couple of them to take home for myself and my girlfriend, but I don't see any sign of it being released for T-Mobile US, so I guess I'm going to have to fork out the outrageous money for one when I get home to the UK... £519 (= $820)

The Nexus One and Nexus S were quadband, meaning that they only worked on the specific carrier frequencies they were designed for. For that reason there were specific T-mobile US versions because T-mo uses 1700/2100 (AWS) for 3G rather than the 1900 standard many other carriers in the world use.
The Galaxy Nexus is pentaband HSPA+, meaning that there is one model that will work everywhere in the world. Yes even on 3G (or "4G" if the carrier calls HSPA+ that). You'll be able to buy the unlocked Galaxy Nexus in the UK and use it in the US on any of the GSM carriers here (AT&T, T-mo, Simple, regionals).

no sim just means that its not provided with a contract or a sim card for a carrier, instead its just the phone unlocked full price that you use with any carrier.
as for what you need just check the bands that the carrier use vs what the phone has the galaxy nexus is pentaband tho so it will most likely work with pretty much all carriers globally

I've been reading the last few comments and decided to speak up. First I want to say thank you, even though I didn't ask the questions myself, but the questions asked I had myself.
Now, I am a Sprint customer. Clearly no sign of this coming to us anytime soon if at all. I have a Nexus S 4G and I am aware it'll get the update soon enough, but I am wanting the Galaxy Nexus so bad that I am considering ordering the one released in the UK. Now I noticed the "sim free" or "no sim" means it is contract free. I assume I have to at least have some type of service with Magenta to even use it if I order it right? Also, let's say I already was a T-Mobile customer and I had a UK released Galaxy Nexus ported here in the US which comes SIM free, all I would have to do is put my SIM from my previous android phone (whatever that would be) inside the Galaxy Nexus and it would get service right? The phone itself would still be off contract right? The SIM is just for service so I can actually use it as a phone. And it all comes down to the consumers data plans, etc on how they can use it right?
I hope I wasn't confusing.
Thanks in advanced.

If you want a SIM-free handset (which by the looks of it, the OP does) then you will have to wait until next week at the earliest since the SIM-free stock has been delayed.

what confuses me is that they send it worldwide and it says to support GSM
Also, if it is locked, wouldn't it be possible to unlock it just by loading one of a custom rom from this forum?

Australian residents only get priority over others in the world when it comes to getting ripped off. See what it costs in local stores:

The specs shown in the OP link looks like it's Galaxy Nexus in general (not just the LTE version). The LTE network is not operational in Norway (do correct me if im wrong), and since it wasn't operational at launch time of the Nexus they decided not to import the LTE version to Norway.
I can't understand they would do that unless the LTE version won't work on regular GSM networks.
This link says that it is NOT a GSM device, and will not work worldwide.

You could use the LTE Nexus as LTE-only on a carrier with GSM and LTE. However, the Nexus only supports LTE Band 13, which means your carrier would also have to be using Band 13. So far, Verizon is the only carrier on earth that uses Band 13.
Making it more complicated, your carrier would have to have implemented Voice over LTE and IMS SMS otherwise your phone would be data only and unable to receive calls/text messages.

Thanks, but this is 16gb version, I can get that in AU for a bit cheaper price. 32Gb GSM is way more expensive here than in the US.
Do not get the verizon 32gb version as it will NOT work anywhere in australia. It is a cdma and lte phone, not gsm.
If you want the 32GB GSM version then you first have to wait for it to be released

Hi,
i am interested in buying the Rogers Nokia Lumia 900, unlock it with a code, and make it work on Telus.
Questions to those who bought the Nokia Lumia 900 from Rogers:
1) Does the LTE will work on Telus Network?
2) Is the Internet Sharing locked?
3) I figure we can still get the April 16th update when we unlock it?
4) Where did you bought your codes?
Thanks in advance!
not sure for questions 1-3.
4. I bought mine here... www.remotecellunlock.com
for the Rogers Nokia Lumia 900 it was USD$ 8.79 and code was delivered in 35 minutes
1. dont know
2. now this feature is locked.
3. yes
4.www.cellunlocker.net 7.99 USD, unlock it night before sleep and got it when i wake up
From what I can tell the Rogers version really doesn't have LTE.
Just pentaband.
Onced unlocked I will let you know about the AT&T version on Telus....still waiting.

I have a couples questions for you:
- After buying the device from Rogers, where did you get your 'Unlock Code'?
- Did you already had a Micro-SIM card or you went to Telus asking for one? and did you have to ask them to change your data plan for the LTE plan or something?
- You have an LTE icon on the phone?
- Is the Internet Sharing feature working?
- Did you have to make special changes to the settings for your LTE connection to work? Changing APN, etc...
- As for the update from Nokia, you tried the Zune trick of dropping and reconnecting your internet connection or something like that?
Hello
I bought a Galaxy Nexus i515 on eBay, but I live in Spain.

My question is if I can use this phone to WCDMA or GSM once released.
Here in Spain we no longer have CDMA and knowing that the network is using the phone, I wanted to know if installing a radio or something could make it work.
Thank's for the answers.

YOU CANNOT USE THE PHONE IN SPAIN IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM OTHER THAN WIFI.
end of thread.
As far as I know, the i515 does not do voice over lte. Also, if I remember correctly the i515 still depends on CDMA for authentication before it can use the lte.
Also, wcdma is not anywhere near the same thing as CDMA.
As the person above me has said, the only use able network part in your phone is the Bluetooth and WiFi. Everything else is incompatible with your country's network type.
