In nodo, we can turn this feature off in the phone , but in mango , i just discovered how to do it, we cant turn the feature off in the phone itself
U need to do this only once .
so here are the steps :
1) tick on the 2 features in settings > find my phone connect to these features faster and save my location
2) go to https://www.windowsphone.com and login with yr primary phone ID ( live,hotmail, MSN ect)
3) at the webpage, go to my phone > account and click remove ( to remove yr phone).
4) tick off the 2 features in settings > find my phone connect to these features faster and save my location
u will notice Find my phone disconnected immediately
u may see possible battery life savings but u cant install apps from webpage marketplace but the phone marketplace works fine
I've just tried that method.
The only thing that has changed is notification under the Windows Live - "Outdated", but "find my phone" is still connected for me.
I'm waiting for other reports out there

Mine says disconnected.my live account is set to as items arrive.for some reason if u cant get it right , maybe u want alter this setting to 15 mins , manual or as items arrive. But it should probably not make a difference
To Repeat the steps again, if u didn't get it right
1) ensure location is turned on.
2) tick the 2 options on yr phone , "connect to these features faster" and "mapping "
3) sync yr windows live id on yr phone ( right click>sync)
4) go to windowsphone.com. U will see yr phone there listed again and with a email in yr inbox " welcome to windowsphone" . Wait for this email .
5) untick the 2 options on yr phone , "connect to these features faster" and "mapping"
6) repeat the steps in post 1
I do not have any use for find my phone, it does not help one to recover a lost , stolen phone as tech savvy thieves can easily remove the sim card or hard reset the device in which case the feature is rendered useless.
No really, one more simple step is to turn off the location services, poof, it´s off.

I believe it still works without location as yr position is determined by cell phone tower triangulation and info is sent to microsoft thru yr phone data services but need yr windows live ID for it to be seen on windowsphone.com
Also btw I think this also uses up battery as it clearly says connected.

another method is to make a full backup of yr phone using the custom homebrew tools in xda
hard reset yr device
restore using the backup
Remove yr phone in windowsphone.com
and u will see yr phone disconnected

Its a bit tricky though but hard reset, set up live account and restore backup method is easy because windowsphone.com will detect 2 phones and will disable one (after restore)

if u are disconnected it will not show up in windowsphone.com
there will be no "device" category there.
Find my phone as in Nodo is different from that of mango. Well it allows u to lock, ring and erase yr phone, that is if its lost. if its stolen, thats a different story as yr phone is in possession of someone else.
it has nothing to do with complicated process in Mango. its a flaw which MS corrected from Nodo to mango
and the feature itself has drawbacks without a lockscreen password if the phone is stolen
let me explain :
In nodo we can turn off this feature in settings, with mango we couldn't...reason is if u lost yr phone and yr phone does not have lockscreen password, anyone who finds yr lost phone could just turn the feature off in NODO and before. And so u will lose the ability to remote wipe the device , and yr personal data will be compromised, it is already is when u dint put in a lockscreen password and someone finds the phone before u can wipe it thru find my phone.
. so this is a flaw MS corrected in MAngo by not setting up options to turn off find my phone in the device itself but rather from a webpage that requires yr login ID . but on a side note, it does not make yr phone immune to hard reset . if anyone who found yr lost phone hard resets the device thru the vol buttons, then u cannot track the phone, but yr personal data will be have disappeared.so it comes to the same thing. of cos the best thing to safeguard yr personal data is to put in a lock screen password, even zune cannot sync a locked phone.
This is why find my phone does not totally foolproof yr phone without a lockscreen password. Find my phone uses cell towers to work aand so technically speaking any thief or anyone familiar with the feature finding yr lost/stolen phone can remove the sim card to render the feature useless, but the lockscreen will save the day . this is where the importance of lockscreen password come in . the phone contents cannot be accessed without the lockscreen password.FInd my phone allows u to track, and wipe yr phone befrore y rphone contents is accessed or hard resetted but it may not allow u to recover yr phone if its intentionally stolen, as thieves may resort to hard resetting and/or removing the sim card

There waas a similar feature like find my phone though not the same in apple iphones 3G/3GS and in earlier versions of IOS without user driven phone tracking which only came about in IOS 4 and above . but the purpose of it was to prevent viruses from spreading thru networks or some other unpredictable, undesirable/illegal activity which may rear its ugly head in the future. i am not sure if the feature is still around in later iphones>IOS versions
It allows apple to identify and cripple a device remotely. the feature does not show up in iphone settings/ options nor is there any way to turn it off except jail breaking and installing an app called sbsettings in which one can disable the feature. There was some privacy concerns with this feature and the issue which was blogged about several times on the net, a few years ago

So u may be wondering why is there such a feature in the first place in smartphones when all u need is lockscreen password or the feature does not allow u to recover yr stolen phone , well
its for security reasons for privacy for individuals, the legal aspects of the law and safeguarding large corporate, or govt organizations which use smartphones in which restricted information is being kept and to prevent compromise of such information b ymaking a copy of the phone . it also allows timely intervention in dealing with unscrupulous rogue individuals in corporations using a smartphone with restricted information in which a windowsphone with login id and password only known to the organisation and not the individual. this is why a login id and password like windows live is needed to set up a windowsphone unlike apple's iphone. so i must say in a way MS security implementations is more secure than apple's that its user activities can be tracked e.g illegal sharing of restricted corporate information thru email and sms
this is also why zune does not restore full file by file 100% backups of phone and tags device backups to the specific phone.
sms is not backed up . and other information like emails need to be set up again
Again, On a side note , its good to take note a few things to avoid losing yr phone :
always put yr phone in a front pocket and not back or side if there are no buttoned pockets
time to time feel yr pockets to see if the phone is still with u
never leave the phone unattended while in the washroom or eatery, or when busy at something
set up a ringtone/vibration reminder if u are a forgetful person
hang the phone using a holder around yr neck
if u are a regular user of yr phone, its less likely u are to lose it because yr phone is in view with u and in yr hands all the time compared to someone who uses it only a few times a day. a regular user will make it a habit to use the phone and remember to put it in his pocket and practise safe habits like avoid putting a phone into the side pocket where it can slip when one sits or in a bag when taking out things. this is especially a problem with phones that have a "glossy" body like the iphone 3G, their surface is slippery and they can easily slip out from a bag's side sleeve or pants side pocket

I played around with wavesecure and locked my phone via the web gui and then after i unlocked it via the web gui i got to an android screen saying "enter password" with a typical 10 numbered keyboard for Froyo, the funny thing is i didn't set a password for the os... now i'm locked out of my rooted desire and I really don't want to re-flash my phone so i could unlock it and lose all my nice apps i reinstalled after installing this rom.
Now my question, is there a default password for froyo? or this rom or how can i bypass this stupid password without wiping my desire?

WaveSecure ****ed me over but good. My SIM broke, and I had to get a replacement SIM (with the default 0000 PIN). When I started my Desire, it wouldn't let me use it until I entered that stupid code, because it didn't recognize the SIM (even though it's a clone of my old SIM, bar the SIM # and PIN).
Was stuck with a useless Desire for (thankfully only) 1 hour, til the bf got home with the code. >.<

wavesecure isn't bad but not for me i mean even if i lose my phone the crapy 4 locations per day wouldn't be of much use cos, well a phone is a mobile device and can change location pretty easy...
imagine a situation:
phone stolen -> first location puts the phone say 2 miles from me (1/4) -> lock enabled -> i get inside the 2 mile radius and ping the phone for a current location (2/4) just to find out the phone has moved another mile -> get there (3/4) now am inside the circle of the phone but hey its a bit approximate but i start looking around -> after 30 mins i check again to see it's back where it was reported the first time (4/4) ah well better luck tomorrow, new day, new 4 pings...

Only if you can manage to power off your device before the cops take it from you. Otherwise, the data partition is already mounted, and they can suck it down into their UFED via the ADB interface.
A question, though: if you have USB debugging disabled, then ADB isn't available over USB, so could the UFED still access your data? The cops would need to turn on USB debugging, wouldn't they? And if you have a pattern/passcode lock, they wouldn't be able to get into the settings to do it.
Anyway, encrypting your data partition and powering off your phone before the cops get to it is the safest option. Use a really long passphrase, though, because they could still grab an image of your encrypted data partition and take it to a lab where they could try to brute-force the passphrase.

yes good points
the simplest method i find to protect against this is use Full disc encryption for starters
then use cryptfs to set a long ass password for preboot and keep a short pin for lockscreen that's reasonable and have a nice shortcut for immediate poweroff on lockscreen if concerned about this and then powering off is easy/fast
and ofc keep usb debugging off unless needed
if your really adventurous you can also use yubikey key second slot for partial password for the preboot if you have a microsd adapter for it and your device supports it preboot via OTG etc as input
then
type in a brainpassyouknow+yubikeyslot2
and its 2 factor auth and secure as **** long ass random password combining something you know and something you have

Let me tell you a little story about a guy (me) who was sitting in a car while his girlfriend was working when an officer approached. I wasn't doing anything wrong but due to a little misfortune I had nowhere I could go and stay so I had to just sit in the car until she was done working. The cop came to the car and asked me what I was doing and why I was sitting in the car on my laptop in a public garage. I told him I had nowhere to go and I was waiting on my girl. I noticed his hand placed on his weapon and I realized very quickly this was not going to be a casual encounter. he asked me to step out of the vehicle and I asked him why. Now I know normally you shouldn't question an officer but something seamed very off about this gentleman. It was when I locked the doors that things started to escelate and my anxiety went through the roof. I told the officer that I did not feel safe with him holding his weapon to me when I had done absolutly nothing wrong. He just became aggitated like a guy on steroids and called in some other officers. Well things wasn't looking good for me but I decided to try and use my phone camera as some added protection so I wouldn't get shot for absolutlly no reason at all. Well the cops did back off, but this is where things got really crazy. a few minutes later, and it couldn't have been more than 5 minutes, my phone went to some screen like when you have emergency dialing only. I tried calling my girlfriends job but nothing worked at all. I got scared so I dialed 911...NOTHING!!! These guys basically turned my phone into a paperweight. I couldn't do anything with it. I didn't know what to do so I called out the window to a crowd of people and told them to call 911 for me. I then noticed the officers leaving in their vehicles and I got out and ran to my girlfriends job where I stayed until she got off of work.
Now in all of this there is two main points that I really feel are extreme issues. One is how is it legal for anyone, even an officer of the law, to take away your ability to use emergency services?? And second why do they need this software that basically can give them an opening to do whatever they want to you without you being able to protect yourself. Law enforcement is becoming more and more alarming to me with all the technology that they have at their disposal. I say if they want to be able to have surveillance on us 24/7 I believe we should get the same respect. We cannot stand by and have our basic human rights violated like this!!!!
Anyone else uneasy that no matter what if someone finds your phone they can hook up to pc and have access to your internal storage?? Is there no way to change this and have a charge only option under usb?
If someone has your phone plugged into their computer, you either:
1) Are with them
2) Had your phone stolen.
If you have your phone stolen, there's nothing stopping them from battery pulling, going into recovery, and getting all your data from there (granted you're rooted).

It's very simple, set a passcode and MTP does not show any data until the phone is unlocked.

I typically prefer nekkids of my gf on my phone vs sausage but to each their own
This is why you should likely have the ability to remote-wipe your device (via Software), and why you need to ponder very carefully what data you keep on your phone. The easiest way to avoid your friends finding pictures you'd rather they don't see is not to keep those pictures on your phone in the first place.
There are encryption-based Lockboxes which function on the Galaxy Nexus, and it does actually support Full-Disk encryption (with many bugs and downsides), but in short, you need to assume that anything on your phone is accessible to anybody who cares enough to take it from you. Remember, security never buys you safety against others getting your data, it just gives you time to respond before they can get access.

There are also apps you can download to lock certain apps you don't want opened. (Gallery for instance)
I agree though, the safest and best bet is to set a password on your phone and be done with it!

A setting for my Exchange server for my company that i work for reminds me each time setup my phone that they can remote wipe my phone. As can i From our Web Access portal for email. Just another option.

I have a pattern set on my galaxy nexus. If I connect it to my computer the "internal storage" doesn't show up until I unlock the phone.
However, if you lost your phone, there are numerous ways to get your data. This applies to most phones out there

I have "gotya" installed. Not only will send me the gps location of my ohone command but also take a pic of the peraon using the phone when.an incorrect pin is entered. Screw wiping my phone ill just go get it myself
If you are like me, you should have all your favorite apps, documents, pictures etc. stored right on your phone that basically gives a full picture of who you are as an individual. You also have been pretty satisfied with the pattern, pin number, password or face unlock or all of these together as a security you have in place to prevent unauthorized access. But here is something that happened by accident that led me down this thought process. While trying to yank out the phone from my pocket while driving (which when you are getting a phone call especially becomes the most impossible task), I noticed that the phone "Power Down", "Restart", "Airplane Mode" pop up was on. This is on top of my regular swipe to unlock with pin number lock screen. This made me curious and noticed that the back button will work to close this pop up and also the power button works to reactivate this pop up. I hope everyone is with me till here. What surprised me was that the phone will actually turn off or restart from this point without the need for an unlock code. This means anyone with rooting and backup knowledge can steal my phone, restart my phone into recovery and wipe it to make the phone their own or just create a backup (CWM) and through that access my personal information. I know that photos and documents stored on the external card is open unless encrypted. But I hoped the internal data would be secure.
What do you guys think about this? Is there any app that would prevent access to the phone while locked via hard keys? What do you do to keep your information safe?
TL;DR version
If phone is stolen and person has knowledge of android they can factory reset your phone, even if you have a password setup. If they enter recovery they can wipe data and factory reset your phone and now it is usable for them.
My theory if you have your phone rooted I wish there was a way to lock the recovery with a password. Unfortunately ODIN will always be available able to get back to stock. Cerberus is a great app to have full control of phone if stolen FYI

If I have your phone in my possession I guarantee I can hack it regardless of any security measure you make take, so the best solution is to be able to wipe it remotely.
technically even a remote wipe is not enough if the thief is knowledgeable. I accidentally wiped flashing in Odin with nand erase checkd and recovered everything that was on it using this

Exactly my point like everyone else confirms it here. We have advanced so much to a point that even a 9 year old (not that 9 is too young to know computer basics) who is familiar with basics on rooting after reading through forums after forums can get away with stealing a smart phone now a days. At this point the only way I could think of protecting my data (first priority) and then track my phone is if the tracker is incorporated into the boot loader or recovery itself on top of what ever software you have installed in the OS. So if the thief tries to unlock my phone after a restart, the installed software should take care of the rest but If he/she is smart enough to go via boot loader or recovery then the incorporated tracker can do its thing. Anything of that sort exists?

You don't, but its easier than going through all of the steps OP posted.
I really doubt my data is worth anything. Pictures of my cats aren't exactly hot commodities and I don't store anything on my phone that I wouldn't publicly reveal, anyway.
I wouldn't be worried about my worthless information, just annoyed I was dumb enough to let it get stolen. Yeah, I know that basically anyone with half a brain can wipe a phone and re-sell it - it always amazes me when people think that thieves aren't smart enough to do that.
I'm cynical. Saves a lot of worry since I just expect the worst, I guess.

I would be less worried about the minute possibility of a phone thief targeting your personal information than I would be about your personal data being mined from your phone by numerous applications.
Bottom line is, if you use Google or Facebook, you personal information is already in the hands of giant corporations who will never be held accountable for the theft of your personal info.
Take Facebook for example - within the app, the only time it should ever ping your location is if you are using FB chat and have the location setting enabled. However, even when you disable location within FB chat, every single time you open Facebook it uses your GPS to get your location. Every time.
In addition, although you are unable to see it in action because there is no notification icon for it, I would bet a million bucks it's also pulling your network location if your GPS is off.
Facebook is constantly working in the background - even if you never opened it.
Google? I won't even begin to try and explain the amount of data they are collecting from you. As is T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, ATT, etc. every single second that your phone is on with data enabled.
Should we be concerned with some random thief who knows the ins and outs of Android pulling your data? Sure, we should think about it. But the reality is, if you own a smart phone your information is already out there in the hands of companies who will use it to any end they can in order to turn a profit. Period.
ButWhile I see the pros and cons of different parts involved in using social networks and so forth, one thing we can (at least for now) be certain of is that they won't use your credit card information etc. to make illegal purchases and so forth. I know of a person who routinely used the credit card app to check balance, pay bill etc. and next thing he was getting phone calls to see if the purchases made at a casino in Spain are OK?! This is without ever losing the phone!!. So, it could be worse in the case of phone loss. Sure, personal data, pictures and even email to some extent is not as bothersome to me as identity theft. Thank to some anti-fraud features of the banks etc. one can deny and simply not be associated with that activity (of course in legitamate cases). My friend ended up getting another card with different number and they closed the online banking account. He had to re-register all over with another id. So, it can be a big hassle. I heard of cases where people had to hire lawyers and run around courts to prove their innocence due to identity theft. Of course if you keep a picture of your driving licence on the phone, you are really asking for it so... (trust me, one girl was doing this because she didn't want to carry her purse/wallet on night outs)
Having said that, I am always worried if the roms we download here in XDA have trojans or backdoors built into kernels and system files... I know that it is like doubting even the good devs but how do we know for sure? Unless you are really an in-depth expert and figure out all the details such as processes and ports that are open and so forth, how do you really know? The phone's data icons keep pinging back and forth every now and then and at times I wonder what's being sent and what is it receiving... just sync'ing contacts...or...??
Call me paranoid but, after what happened to my friend, and similar stories, I am a bit skeptical about the security and integrity of the ROMs in the first place... Now, mostly I download and try different roms and settle on one that suits my preferences. I use the phone for calls as well as to make general tasks easier in many aspects except financial transactions. In short, I don't trust my smart phones.

Preface:
Samsung Galaxy Y (Young) (GT-S5360) is an Android-based smartphone by Samsung, announced in August 2011.
Galaxy Y features: Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread OS (upgradable to v2.3.6) with Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz user interface, and has integrated social networking apps and multimedia features, including Google Voice Search, and 5.1 channel audio enhancements.It also has a standard 3.5 mm 4-pin audio jack.
The device sports a 832 MHz ARMv6 processor, 180 MB of internal memory and supports up to 32 GB of removable storage through a microSD card. The phone has a 2 MP camera, a screen with a 240x320 resolution and a multitouch interface with the optional SWYPE virtual keyboard. The phone offers connectivity options such as 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and also GPS. It supports 3G HSDPA speeds of up to 7.2 Mbit/s. The device allows tethering with other Wi-Fi enabled devices, which enables users to share the phone's Internet connection.
The Galaxy Y uses a single-core 832 MHz ARMv6 along with Broadcom BCM2763 VideoCore IV.
The Galaxy Y features 290 MB of RAM and 250 MB of dedicated flash internal storage (190 MB user available).
It has microSDHC slot (up to 32 GB).
The Galaxy Y uses a 76.2-millimetre (3.00 in) QVGA (320x240) TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen which has a Pixel density (PPI) of '133'.

Q Can i make a screen shot on stock firmware?
A Yes you can! user doesn’t need to root the device or employ third-party apps just to take a photo of what's happening on screen. Taking a screenshot is simple, To take screenshots you have to first hold down the home key and then press the power/lock key.Don't hold the home key too long otherwise lock button will not work. As you hold the home button immediately press the power/lock button to capture the screenshot.
Q My Young screen is turning on by itself, what is happening?
A It is caused by an application, usually by live wallpapers, try to find it and delete it, or install an antivirus app., i recommend Dr.Web Anti-virus, scan, delete, wipe cache and dalvik (optional).
Q how can i make the volume of my SGY louder?
A Most phones have their volumes limited by local laws to protect our hearing. There is a way to boost your volume however. Go to the Android Market and download an App called Volume+ (Sound Boost). There is also a free version called Volume+ Free (be aware, do not raise it too much, it can damage the speaker).
Q How to remove an icon from the home screen?
A To remove an icon from the home screen, simply press on it, hold and drag to the Trash at the bottom of the screen.
Q How to dial contacts with a quick swipe?
A Instead of tapping on the contact name and then tapping on the option to dial, you can simply swipe right with your finger on the contact's name and it will directly call him/her. By swiping left, you can quickly send a message to the contact.
Q How to hide particular files from showing up in Gallery or Music Player?
A Sometimes there are things that we do not want our friends or relatives seeing,So instead of deleting the particular files or moving them to your computer all of the time, you can hide them in just a few seconds. All you need to do is create a folder called .nomedia wherever you want on your sdcard (you can do this from your phone by selecting Menu button -> Create Folder), then put the particular files on that folder and the files will not appear in media apps. You can also press the Menu key on your phone, then choose More -> go to Settings and untick the "Show hidden files" option if it is enabled. That way you will hide the .nomedia folder from the My Files app as well.
Q Can i make Voice actions?
A Yes you can, if you've got the Google Search widget on your home screen, tap on the little microphone which you see in the widget and speak out your command. Example: Tap on the microphone and say "Send an e-mail". An e-mail popup will appear giving you the options to type in the recipent's e-mail, subject and message.
Q I have forgotten my unlock pattern, what to do?
A If you have forgotten your custom unlock pattern, then don't panic. After 5 unsuccessful tries a button should appear saying 'Forgot pattern'. Press this and you will be asked to enter your Gmail username/password. The phone will then ask for a new unlock pattern. If you don't have a Gmail account, then you might have to either call your carrier or factory reset your phone.
Q How to calibrate my Galaxy Y?
A Device calibration is required when the auto rotation sensor does not work properly. What happens actually that if your galaxy y is not calibrated properly, then screen will not rotate when you turn your device and screen rotate when you do not rotate your device. To calibrate galaxy y steps are given below:
- Go to Settings>Display>Horizontal calibration.
- Place the device on a flat surface and click calibrate. Wait for a few seconds.
Now your galaxy y is calibrated and you won’t get any auto rotation sensor errors.
Q How to quickly delete/uninstall Android Apps?
A You can quickly delete or uninstall an android app from galaxy y with this trick in just one second, as galaxy y task manager will take some time to uninstall large size apps. With this trick you can uninstall any app within one second no matter how big the size of app is. To do this follow steps below:
- Open all apps by clicking the all apps button on home screen.
- Click menu button of your phone and select "Edit".You will see a small minus mark on all downloaded apps.
- To quickly delete any app just click it and that app will be deleted in just one second.
Q How can i use custom ringtones, alarms, sms notifications?
A To use custom ringtones for your phone ringtone, your alarm or your text message notification, simply copy an MP3 file to one of the following folders:
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
If they don't already exist, then create a new folder. The file will then show up when you want to change your ringtones.
Q How can i Setup SIM Change Alert On Galaxy Y?
A If you enable the SIM change alert feature then you will be notified by the phone about the one who have your phone or stole it.If this feature is active, then when somebody inserts a new SIM then the phone automatically sends a messages about the thief giving you the information about his phone number on a different phone number that you enter as alert message recipients. To enable SIM change alert do as follows:
- First of all enable data connection (or wifi) and go to Settings>Location and security.
- Under “Find my mobile” check “SIM change alert”.It will ask you to login with your Samsung account.If you do not have a Samsung account then sign up. After signing up, again check "SIM change alert" and enter your Samsung account password to activate this feature.
- Now click “Alert message recipients”. Enter the password and enter some phone numbers with country codes. Click the green plus sign to add numbers and red minus sign to delete a number.
- Scroll down a little bit and you will see “SMS message”. You can edit this message like “Keep this message, My phone has been stolen by somebody”. This text will be forwarded to all the numbers that you entered as alert message recipients when SIM is changed by a thief.
- Now put a check mark in “Remote controls” and enter your Samsung account password to enable it. If this feature is enabled then you can track and locate your lost galaxy y with “Samsung Dive”. With Samsung Dive you can track, locate and delete private data on your phone remotely.
Q Sometimes i lose packet data (3G) when i turn it off then on, i turn off then turn on my Youmg to enable packet data again?
A There is no need to turn your phone off and on to re-enable packet data, just long press on power button, enable airplane mode for 3-5 seconds then disable it.
Q How To Make my Young Run Faster?
A sometime you will find lack of memory due to various applications running in background. These apps waste android system memory. So you should clear them off if they are not used. You can clear them by using taskmanager. Galaxy y has a built taskmanager which will do this work for you. Open taskmanager by holding home button then move on to the RAM tab then click clear memory. It will free the RAM and save memory. Aslo you can download two more applications which are android assistant and app cache cleaner. For quick boost use android assistant and always clean the cache of various apps by using app cache cleaner.These apps are important for your smartphone.
Q How To Backup my Favourite Apps On my Young?
A You can always make a backup of your android apps on Galaxy y downloaded from play store (android market).For this you have to download an app called android assistant.Download it from play store.After downloading it open it and move to tools ,you will see apps and backup.Click on this icon and you will be shown a list of apps you wish to backup.Select the apps you want to backup.The apps will
be backed up to the memory card in apk format. Later you don't need to download them from play store (android market).You can directly install them from memory card.But during installing them your phone will block them as it doesn't allows non market apps to install. For this go to settings, click applications and select allow installation of non market apps. Then your phone will not block them.
Q How can i Switch my Young Network between 2G & 3G?
A In Galaxy y you can switch your phone's network from 2G to 3G or reverse. For this go to settings click wireless and networks, click mobile networks, move to network mode, select GSM or WCDMA(3G). now enable data traffic if you want to use internet.
Q How to Change Contact Picture?
A If you want to put a pic on your phone's contact then you have to move them first to android phone. Make a backup of your contacts because if phone is wiped then contacts will be deleted. To backup contacts on galaxy y open contacts click menu and select "Import/Export", Now choose "Export to SD card".Click yes. The contact list be backed up in "vcf format". And now you can restore the contacts to phone or sim through the import/export option. Now open contacts, click the plus sign to add contacts.Choose phone.Enter all details and click the plus sign on the pic. You can select the pic from album or can take picture from camera. Click save and you are done.
Q How to Restart Samsung Galaxy Y>
A Press and hold home and power key at same time until your phone turns off then release the buttons. Galaxy Y will restart. Restarting may be required if phone is hanged. This trick will let you to restart your galaxy y without turning it off and again starting it.
Q Is there a hidden wallpaper?
A Goto settings > About phone > Android version. Click many times on "Android version" until you see a wallpaper.

A It is recommended to make a nandroid backup immediately.

Rooting:
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. Rooting is similar to jailbreaking devices running the Apple iOS operating system. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system. Rooting enables all the user-installed applications to run privileged commands that are typically unavailable to the devices in their stock configuration.
Legality: The Free Software Foundation Europe argues that it is legal to root or flash any device. According to the European Directive 1999/44/CE, replacing the original operating system with another does not void the statutory warranty that covers the hardware of the device for two years unless the seller can prove that the modification caused the defect.
On July 26, 2010, the United States announced a new exemption making it officially legal to root a device and run unauthorized third-party applications, as well as the ability to unlock any cell phone for use on multiple carriers.
Safety: I Have always said that the person should learn the Android OS before rooting. It is a good idea to have an idea of what rooting is doing and what it will affect. I would say spend your time really learning the OS which is not a small task. Then, if you still feel like it, go ahead and root. While rooting can help you learn many things about your device, it also can reap very bad consequences, such as:
-Bricking your phone (or in an easier way to explain, making your phone a pretty paper weight).
-Corrupting core files.
-Voiding phone warranty.
-Have your phone open to malicious software and applications that can do serious harm to your phone.
As you can see, it can reap very negative things. I have read/seen people who have literally had to buy brand new phones because they tried the latest and greatest rom. Rooting is essentially something that you must take at your own risk & caution. Generally, if you follow exactly the procedure of rooting made by developers, you will be more likely on the safe side.

Battery Conservation Tips:
-Set Brightness at low level: Brightness can lure a lot of battery if not changed intelligently. if you want to save more battery drain, set brightness manually at low level depending on the external amount of light.
-Remove Live Wallpapers: Using a live wallpaper is another battery sucking feature. If you turn out to be truly saving battery, make sure not to use any live wallpaper.
-Disable Location and GPS services: Keeping GPS ON at all times, decreases your battery life, so its better to disable it while not in use. To disable, go to Settings > Location and Secutity > and switch it off.
-Disable Wi-Fi or Mobile Data when not in use: Try to avoid situations when you keep your Wifi or Mobile Data ON even when the phone is set in standby.
-Manage Sync carefully: Keeping the Sync ON all the time is another reason for decreased battery life. Enable it anytime you want, manage your emails or services and again turn it off. For those who are on work and want real-time push notifications are advised not to follow this tip.
-Turn OFF screen touch sounds: To save a little more on battery, its better to switch off the screen touch sounds. To do so, go to Settings > Sound and untick Audible touch tones and Audible selection and Screen lock sound.
-Turn OFF bluetooth: Disabling bluetooth when you are not using it, is another way to save battery juice.
-Follow the method of full charge and full discharge: Don’t put your phone on charging when there is the battery remaining it for another few hours unless it’s very important. Charge it when your battery is about to get totally discharged and when you put it for charging, let it get charged totally.
-Set sleep time: Check the Sleep setting (under Display) and make sure it is set to 1 minute or less.
Keep calls short: This is obvious, but how many times have you heard people on their mobile phone say, "I think my battery’s dying," and then continue their conversation for several minutes? Sometimes, the dying battery is just an excuse to get off the phone (and a good one, at that), but if you really need to conserve the battery, limit your talk time.
-Turn OFF mobile network when not in range: Its very often that you lose the mobile network when you are travelling, so its advisable to turn OFF the mobile network by switching ON Airplane mode.
- After each month remove your battery from mobile phone and let it rest for an hour, it will give battery a breath and it will last longer.
-You should not have to turn off your phone to charge it. Most battery chargers deliver more than enough current to power your phone and charge it at the same time. Doing so will not lengthen the charge time, and leaving a phone on allows the user to be aware of its fuel gauge, so that you can remove it when the battery is full.
-When using a car charger, do not charge the battery when the inside temperature of your car is hot. Wait until the car has cooled before you plug in the phone.

Recommendations:
-Too loud wallpapers may sometimes disturb the look of your home screen and make the icons quite invisible, simple or a less-colored wallpapers are always suggested as to be the best choice. But your choice is what matters.
- Disable USB debugging when it is not in use. Leaving USB debugging enabled makes your phone vulnerable (e.g. lock pattern can be reset).
- Use only essential widgets on your home screen - each widget consumes memory and processing power which can slow your down your phone.
- Uninstall apps that you don't use - after awhile your phone can get cluttered as some Apps are designed to always run in the background. If you rarely use an App, then uninstall it to free up memory and CPU resource.
- It is best to avoid task killers such as Advanced Task Killer. Android is designed to automatically pre-load certain applications, even if you don't load them yourself. If it starts to run low on memory, it will smartly unload the oldest running apps automatically. Manually killing tasks will only mean they get loaded in memory again. Task killers can make the phone slow, laggy, or drain battery life more quickly.
- Avoid putting your phone in direct sunlight, it may affect touch screen & your battery performance.
- Check rom/kernel.zip md5 before flashing if it is convenient.
- Always update applications, if available, for better performance.
- Make a backup of your data, applications, contacts...always ready to restore from your computer.
- Read, read and read before you mess with your phone.
- Always be sure that you are flashing the right thing for your Young variant.
- If you do not know what you are doing, so don't do it .

The code shows PDA, CSC and Modem versions. The build date is the date of build of the kernel. With updates, the date will also change

you are right about *#*#44336#*#*, forget about it. the manufacturing date of hardware is "RF Cal date" you can find it when you dial *#12580*369#.
or type *#197328640#, This will open the Service Mode menu on your Galaxy device. Select the option N. 2, that is “Version Info”. On the next screen, select ‘HW Version” (here HW means hardware). Now you will see another set of options on the next screen. Now tap on “Read CAL Date”, and bingo!
