[Q] Google Talk Emoticons (i know...) - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Nothing too big
Just wondered if anyone has managed to get the Froyo/GB Gtalk emoticons on ICS/HC? I can't tell the difference with these green blobs...
Just wondering if anyone has actually done it yet, otherwise I'll go ahead and play around when I get home from work.

So this didn't seem to have much impact on the modding community...
I newly made the switch to ICS and I already miss the little green smileys. The newer ones are not utterly terrible, but the old ones were super cute and much much better to distinguish. I guess you didn't find anything?

I am pretty sure that they are in the Mms.apk file. Open it and go to res/drawable-xhdpi change the png files with the ones you want.

They sure are. Will try to replace them with the old ones and report back.
Mind that I am on a Galaxy S so it probably won't be suitable for the OP or anyone in this forum.

How could I replace the Phone/contacts? Give instructions, get $40

[Congrats, the hater made me raise the price from $20, to $40] - Goal is to replace Sense dialer with stock dialer/calllog/contacts from an AOSP 2.1 rom.
I hate SenseUI. Not Really, but the way the dialer/contacts work, is just one of my biggest problems with Sense.
So, when I get this phone, my only reason to root, is if I can replace my default phone/contacts APK.
I haven't used a Sense rom on any phone for over an hour, simply because I can NOT stand the dialer/call log and such.
Any suggestions? Please?
Im familiar with ADB, and will have no problems/regrets/worries about rooting, as I treat my phones like a first born, and dont let them get near harm.
But if there is no real hope for me replacing the Call Log/ Dialer/ Contacts part, with the style from 2.1 N1, I might as well go get my deposit back.
Anyone? First person with step for steps gets $40 donated/paypal'd/ whatever works for you
thanks for not flaming, im sure others will be pleased if this information is made simple-and-clear.

Kinda curious if LauncherPro will function correctly aswell, but i can atleast live with the Sense Launcher/drawer, but would be way happier knowing in advance that I could run some form.. Helix1/2, LauncherPro, ADW, etc.

well first off you gotta root it first, after that i'm not sure.
Edit: i'm retarded, gotta read the title of stuff before I post.
Ha. I woke up to the sweet sound of my email sound on my N1, hoping someone responded, read it.. came to the computer, to see you corrected yourself, and I dont have to be bitter.
Yes. I will root, as long as I know I can do this.
Thanks again though. .
..4 more hours.. till Tmobile can suck it.

Sorry your best bet is to wait till the cusom roms start coming out, senseUI stuff will go away real fast then. But I agree with you, i'm not a fan of it either.
The problem with Sense UI is the deepness of how it is built into the system. Technically you could push an ASOP .apk of Contacts, but you would more than likely still default back to the Sense version anyway.
Your best bet is waiting on a full ASOP or ASOP-esque build that will remove Sense for the most part. $10 dollars please!
Come on.. there isnt a way I cant also have my contacts/phone dialer/call log as a seperate APK and not over-write the sense stuff? like just have both installed on my phone?
On modaco fourms a while back, in a sense rom they said that was an option, i cant find the original thread for the life of me right now..

I said it.
I still have not found an acceptable solution to this.
Im intending on giving this a full week, before I just return my phone.
I dont mind so much, if it doesnt straight up REPLACE my standard call/contacts/call log, if I can include the stock APK from AOSP 2.1, that runs coexsistant with the current setup, that will be fine.
Someone? Anyone? ill raise the price to $20 if someone can find me an acceptable solution.
Is it not possible for this to just turn into a simple app, like Dialer One basically remade the Sense dialer/contact lists into an app?
every single person that doesnt have htc smart dialer wants it, and you that have it wants to get rid of it, htc dialer > android dialer, sorry but you're truly being a big baby, just return the phone someone will make better use of it.

You do realize, what Im asking isnt too far fetched.. considering this is a forum based off of doing things to the phone that were never originally intended for it right?
You just mad you dont have one? Who knows.
We dont need you, or your god damned negativity.
**** it. $40 on the table.
I already got my evo and don't need your chump change, I had a mytouch3g and a nexus one and always wanted to have the HTC smart dialer and now that I have it , I see a retard trying to get it off his phone, anyway on topic just wait till they root and release an eclair build or a froyo build.

Stop wasting my ****ing time. You obviously dont know what is and isnt possible, and its that whole "oh just wait until its out" type of mentality that doesnt motivate anyone, to make things happen.
Please, jump out of this thread, and **** yourself.
Then do something about it get the phone apk from the nexus one dump and try to push it to the evo be creative you're just a retard trying to get things handed to you I don't see why a dev trying to get froyo on our device would stop doing that so just one guy could get Android dialer on his evo, you're just plain stupid really.

Dude if I had time, I would, otherwise I wouldnt be offering money to people.
Devs that are working on Froyo, im not asking them to do anything different.
but there sure as hell are enough people on here, that have a better understanding of android coding than I currently do, and obviously im not the only person with an interest in this.
Please, im not intending to make this thread a argument between you and me.
Get something to say to me? Then message it, stop cluttering this ****.
I know $40 isnt even an hours worth a work when compared to the price I charge people for IT work, or hardware diagnostics.
If there has to be a higher price to make it happen, ill be paying it, Not you, and everyone else will benefit.
So stop crying about me wanting to put money into the hands of somebody that may need, or want the cash flow.
It's not the giving away money that bothers me its just the fact that you want to dumb down your phone that I cannot comprehend anyway good luck but like they said sense seems pretty deep into the OS so it might not be such an easy task

Here's an UNTESTED thought:
I downloaded another Rom from the Hero forums that should have the AOSP dialer and yanked the phone.apk file from the v2.5.3 download (it should be attached below, there's a newer one up there too if you want to try that instead)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=663366
The idea is that if you install it and then press the phone button, it should prompt you for which dialer you want to use and if you select "Contacts", it should drop you into the AOSP dialer. You might need the "contact.apk" file as well on further research...but no harm in trying, right? If it fails, just uninstall and it should drop you back to normal.
If it works, I nominate the money goes to toast and/or flipz...because I love toast and flipz's work since my hero days.
HINT: NO SYSTEM RW ROOT AT THIS TIME, meaning until we get that you cant replace any of the system apps.

Worth mentioning, is that I did pull the Contacts.apk, contactsstorage.apk, and Phone.apk, directly off my N1,
and while I tried to install all of them, in the end it doesn't allow it to happen.
this was a common knowledge move to me, as I assumed this wasn't going to work, before mrono and thecodemonk posted it.
I had to leave for the redbull air races before I could post that i tried directly that, to no avail.
but, the lack of System RW root, was the type of explanation i was looking for, as to why it didn't work.
thanks again, when we further this, Ill spread $ to the right directions, if not put some towards the proper Dev's now anyway.
If you root using toasts method and have rw permissions in recovery. Try this while in recovery
adb remount
adb push Phone.apk /system/app
Try a few different phone apks from nexus or cdma hero darchdroid or any other 2.1 AOSP rom.
Sometimes just installing apps wont work. And it should ask you to replace the htcdialer when pressing the phone icon. You dont have to have rw while in android for this to happen. Its something included in all android phones. Just like if you install a launcher from the market, you dont have rw permissions but it will still ask you if you want to switch launchers when you press home. If it doesnt ask then try to go to Setting>applications>manage apps> htcdialer and then see if you can select "clear default"
EDIT: im going to post an aosp phone.apk from an htc rom that that someone put together.
Try this View attachment Phone.apk

Do you guys even know why you want ics?

Besides it being new what are you really gaining. Tons of apps don't work on it. Besides folders and multitasking I don't even know what I'm really gaining. And if I have to lose one feature my phone has now ill pass. Phone works too good right now and ics theme will hold me over for a long time.
I understand everybody wants what is new but think about everything your really gaining. To me its like IOS 4.3 to 5. I upgraded my Ipad 2 lost jailbreak for what I see as a minor upgrade.

I can't speak for everyone else but I bought my phone because it was at the time of purchase ahead of every curve (with the exception of nfc) so now that something is out that can make the phone better why the would I not want it. I'm patient in waiting but would love to have it yesterday

How about true dual core support? or gpu acceleration through the whole phone?

Thanks to the informative Android blogs and tons of videos, most people know why they want ICS besides having a new look. As for your Ipad and losing jailbreak, you probably should have read in advance to see what features iOS 5 had before taking the plunge. I remember reading multiple times that people with jailbreak should hold up on iOS 5 until an untethered jailbreak is done. But hey, this is about Android
What I'm really waiting for is a nice AOSP ICS with everything working. I am less enthusiastic about TW ICS.
One of the videos showed better app controlled , limit or block apps from background data

Hmm... OP you should consider the fact that ICS source was only recently released and I think the Nexus Prime launched just today. Of course not all apps are going to work you have to give app developers time to update the apps to be compatible. It's not all going to happen overnight that's why these things take time for the transition. Although I'm a little disappointed that TW covers up some features, I am looking forward to:
*Scrollable widgets
*The swipe gesture to remove notifications
*New notification bar Info slots (i.e. when you get a text you see the contact pic)
*Face Unlock (even though it can be bypassed it's cool nonetheless)
*Camera Speed
*New widget placement UI
*New Cool Blue Look
*The drag and drop feature to make folders
*How the app market stays in the app drawer on the top right
*The minimalist layout of all the Google Apps
*A few other things I'm sure everybody knows by now...
Not to say that you have poor judgment, I do advise reading up a little more on the updates before you jump in and discredit them for changing anything. I think Google is actually just trying to make Android more accessible to more than just Devs, if anything at least give them credit for that.
If you want an entire list of things that are new and how they work, read this review (Personally I think it's the best review that covers everything) it's 7 Pages!

Guys all I'm saying is it seems like alot of people want ics just because and are foaming at the mouth for it. Isn't alot of your apps not working kinda a big deal. People should just calm down enjoy gingerbread for a few more months.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Improved multitasking is enough for me....a better looking OS.....speed.....better hardware acceleration...more efficient......data monitoring.......ability to block certain apps from accessing data and last but not least.............camera app (that thing needed updating)
ICS is what Android needs to be to fully compete with IOS the only real threat(since Isheep see differently). I am not too anxious to see TW and Sense on ICS
I remember when iphone first came out my buddies back in college were saying look at what I can do.....I pulled out my cingular blue razr v3 and said check this out....made a call lol
Just gotta wait till the apps are updated thats all
I have to agree with OP,to a certain extent. A lot of the new features are incremental, and I think you can duplicate most of them with already available apps/mods. Not to say I'm not going to flash ICS as soon as a good rom comes out, but I am pretty satisfied with how my phone runs now. ICS is the first step to integrate the Android phone /tablet os, like ios ,and will be much better as it evolves.
Sent from my Samsung Epic Touch using tapatalk
Only if your hiding something?
Sure, you may be able to replicate some of those features with other apps, but thats the point... it brings these features to stock android.

*New notification bar Info slots (i.e. when you get a text you see the contact pic) - More extra glamour

*Camera Speed - Is a hardware feature of Galaxy Nexus, not ICS
*New widget placement UI - Very similar to TouchWiz
*New Cool Blue Look - Already have themes for this
*The drag and drop feature to make folders - Already offered in custom launchers

Many of the things that you've listed can already be achieved or are part of the Galaxy Nexus and not ICS. Just kind of goes to reinforce the idea that most people really don't know why they want ICS. I personally find ICS to be a bit too intrusive into my privacy, especially seeing as in the recently used app overlay it shows you the last picture you took. Definitely not appealing to people in relationships.

Although I do see your point, the OP asks why I want ICS. I'm entitled to my opinion right? and I noticed the majority of the things you quoted and responded to have to do with modding the system in some way. How about having it all in one package and not having to download a bunch of apps to imitate what should come stock in the OS.
And what's wrong with a little "extra glamour" ?
I just want stock Gingerbread with better battery life and no CarrierIQ. I don't know how much faster people need these little computers to be but the E4GT is fast enough.

Alternate Spash Screens?

Are there any alternate spash screens out there? Or is it generally discouraged (not safe) on the Nexus? I was thinking of changing mine. I changed the one I had on my Droid Incredible and always loved that little personal touch. I was thinking of using this one but I wasn't sure about it being horizontal. I know several of the boot animations are horizontal though, so maybe it doesn't matter.
If you're talking about the bootanimation you can and its quite simple....just move bootanimation.zip to system/app using Root Explorer(or any file browser).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Nope. I'm talking about the very boring "Google" black screen that comes up just before the boot animation.
There was a lot of talk about changing the splash screen on these forums as well as on rootzwiki. No one seemed to have a clue of how to do it and it seems like everyone lost interest rather quick. lol. So as of right now it appears to be UN-changeable. I hope someone eventually figures it out though. I've tried digging through framework res files to find the images because I heard that's where they might be and I had no luck.
Well poop....
Kind of an old thread, but I figured I'd reply. I'm unsure exactly where it is located on the gnex, but it wouldn't be in the framework. the splash image loads before the phone boots. This would lead me to believe that it's stored on a partition (probably hidden, in or about the area of the bootloader or radios). There's a pay app on the market made for galaxy nexus devices (seems to be most versions) called Logo Me. If I fail to dig up the relevant information, I'll end up buying the apk, but it is indeed possible. I'm not beyond buying the app, I just haven't given up trying to figure out how to do it by hand, since I used to do it all the time on HTC phones.

Thats a really good way to hard brick your phone. Not worth the risk. Probably one of the few ways you actually could brick this phone.
There's an app called logo me in the play store. There's also a thread buried here in the themes and apps section about it. The app allows you to change the Google logo and the little locked/unlocked lock under it with just a push of a button. Its a paid app though, worth it depending how bad you want to change those images.

[Q] New to the GS3, and I have some questions

Hey, so I just got a GS3 after coming from an Evo 4G LTE, and so far I'm loving it. Plus, this is my first Samsung phone, my previous 3 have all been HTC. (The many versions of the EVO) Anyway I do have a few questions that maybe someone can help me with.
1. I noticed that there are different settings for the vibration. Now, when I receive a txt it seems to do the basic ring vibration. I saw that there's an option to create your own vibration, which is pretty cool, but it didn't set for my txt messaging, perhaps I'm doing it wrong?
2. This might be just me or perhaps I'm just used to the keyboard on sense, but I'm noticing I'm making a lot of mistakes while typing. Lol, it's probably just me.
3. I love how samsungs threw in a lot of neat (or gimmicky) features. However, if I'm concerned about battery are there any I should turn off (I know motion is one, but I kinda like it)
4. Out of curiosity, what rom is everyone using? I'm debating whether to stay stock rooted, although I might switch to AOKP. Lol unlike sense, touchwiz really doesn't have a lot of issue with it.
5. Now if I do switch to AOKP or AOSP how is the camera quality?
Thanks in advanced!

3. Not sure. The only motion I ever left on was the swipe your palm to screen shot and I didn't noticed a decrease in battery. As long as you clear stuff in the task manager you should be fine
4. I've been on Paranoid Android for awhile. Touchwiz isn't as bad as people make it seem just not my style. A lot of cool looking touchwiz roms

1. I am pretty sure the vibrate pattern is just for incoming calls not notifications even if you create a custom.
2. Yea lots of different keyboards mess around with a few find the one that fits you. I am using the new swiftkey flow and will not be looking back.
3. When on a TW rom I only use the swipe screenshots and hold phone to ear to call no battery issues for me. I delete S voice completely and disable other motion controls I dont need.
4. Currently running FreeGS3 3.0 really enjoying it. I spend most of my time on CM or other AOSP roms but if you are happy with TW for my phone anyways FreeGS3 has been very solid with the right amount of features and completely stable. The Aroma installer is easy and feature filled almost idiot proofs ROM installation.
5. As he said above the image quality will be fine just loose a few shiny du hickys in the camera ui
Thanks for both of your replies. I'm going to try CM and some other touchwiz roms.

True! Actually I just found out some interesting information. Apparently the "0" folder holds all the information that was in the /sdcard folder before the jellybean update. Another user found it on their galaxy nexus. Oddly enough, most of the folders in mine were empty. Titanium Backup was the only one taking up space because for some reason it backed up there, I also had around 200mb in the android data folder, but I really had a hard time finding out where, so anyway I just ended up deleting it. So far no ill effects.

Yeah, I read this in another thread when a user couldn't find anything on their sdcard
Its weird why they would do that though, maybe to separate phone stuff from things that the user puts on their sdcard? Idk

[Q] Red Underline Spellcheck?

Hey hey,
Coming from Nexus devices with pure AOSP roms I've never realized how much I took this feature for granted. On the S4 if you misspell a word it won't show up with a red underline which would usually give you an option to tap and see suggestions. This is entirely different than autocorrect (after hitting space) on a keyboard which can be accomplished with latinime or any other jellybean keyboard. I've read Samsung had to remove it for some patents regarding Apple.
Upon reading threads for the s3 and note 2 it seems that this is something that can be done by editing two files secsettings.apk & framework2.jar which is information I came across in this thread for the note2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34829337#post34829337
Does anyone think this same process might work on our S4 as well? Or is there another proven mod already to get the dearly beloved red underlines back?
Not sure if anyone has figured this out yet. I admit it's the one thing that bothers me after moving from iPhone to Android. I flashed the 4.3 Google edition ROM to see if there was any difference but unfortunately it's still lacking. The improved keyboard/autocorrect has made things more tolerable, however I've still missed some misspellings in my work e-mails
With CM 10.2 nightlies out I may be switching soon, but I'm curious if anyone has come up with a solution.

This feature is a part of the keyboard.apk rather than the phone itself. There are dozens of alternate keyboards on the Play store. Many have the redlining feature. You don't even have to be rooted to replace the keyboard
