I accepted the OTA update this morning, and after all was set and done, the only different thing I noticed was that the home button/screen is not working as it was before the update.
Long press the button and brings the task manager screen that's ok, but if I'm at the main/home or any other screen and double tap the capacitive button nothing happens, before it would show all 7 pages in small size. Is there a way to restore this function?
Try pinching the home sceen.

Thanks for the reply, pinching the screen does make it to show all screens but still the home button doesn't, I don't know if I changed something by accident.

I've had the phone for two days now and this has happened 3 times now.
The worst one was I got a phone call but the keyboard was up and the back button wasn't there to get rid of it. So I couldn't answer the phone.
One time I couldn't exit the settings menu because the buttons disappeared.
To remedy I turn off the display, turn it back on and unlock to the camera. I think because the camera has the special hidden buttons it causes the phone to refresh the button display otherwise I couldn't find another way to do it.
Has this happened to others? I haven't seen threads about it.

I lost them once but got them back by turning the phone sideways and then back upright once the buttons reappeared.

Oh wow, yea, that would probably work too. But some apps lock to portrait (dialer).

Happened to me while I was playing a game (Reckless Gateway) and received a call at the same time. After the call, soft buttons wouldn't appear anymore, had to restart my phone
I have only lost the buttons when flashing a mod that was not compatible...in that situation I did not have the virtual buttons or the notification bar at all.
Never happened to me on stock or rom. What build/android is your phone? You can find info in settings>about phone

This has happened to me a couple times while using Google Nav. I just pulled down the notification bar and hit the settings button - that seemed to bring the buttons back. Strange issue.
Just a few kinks that need ironing out.. hopefully Google is aware of minor bugs like this already

Yep, exactly. Though I wouldn't call this minor because it made me miss a call.
Another thing I just noticed. Go into an app that has the menu virtual button (the three dots) then turn off the screen. Turn it back on and the menu button will be the only virtual button on the Lock Screen. You can press it and automatically unlock the phone. I'm using slide to unlock and the news and weather app to do this every time.
Edit: Just tried with a different lock (pattern) and the menu button will not unlock. But it is still there and you can press it. It just does nothing. Weird.
Hello,
I've been using my new note 2 for two weeks now.. and I like it so much
I also used sgs2 and 3 before.
I'm not new to android.. I flashed roms, know every single setting in the device, rooted my sgs2 and tried lots of apps to customize them.
Regarding my issue, I like to set my device to none screen security because I always manually lock it with a press on the lock screen button after I do whatever I want to do with it, and to unlock I always press Home button to get back to where I was immediately without the need to swipe the lock screen.
The problem is when I lock it and there is an app running and then press the home button the screen goes to home default screen and do not just unlock the screen and keep it there where I was last, this was not the case with my sgs2 or sgs3.
If I press the lock screen button instead it does what I want but I prefer to use home button because its much easier.
Its not a big issue but its annoying sometimes because sometimes I get popup notification windows while the phone is locked (whatsapp for example) and I press the home button to see it and instead of just turning on the screen to see the window it goes back to home screen and the popup is gone, or in cases where I'am writing an email or reading something and meanwhile talking to somebody, if the screen gets locked, If I press the home button everything is gone. So I have to switch tasks to open my activity again.
I don't know if this is a jellybean issue or hardware (homebutton).
I know its not a big deal but I would appreciate if somebody can help get around this

It seems to be a jellybean feature no way around unless a mod comes out...
All jellybean roms in Note I had this feature and i remember seeing this thing on SGS III jellybean too
Just install the S Voice app , "voicetalk_NLI.apk".
In S Voice, set "double click active S Voice" will fix the issue.
This actually worked! Thanks
But the problem is that i use another app (home2) to control home button which makes me able to control what app runs when double clicking home or even use a combination of home with back or menu.
Its a very good app if you want to try it.
This leaves me with trying to deal with my original issue tho or just return to old factory setting

thanks man! used to annoy me so much having to open the app again
edit. There's one slight problem, now it lags a bit to return back to the home screen..
I just upgraded to Jellybean. When trying to swipe up to use Google Now, absolutely nothing happens, no matter which screen I've tried it from. Is there a trick to getting the app to come up by swiping? I can tap on the Google icon on the home screen of course, but I'd like to use the swiping feature if possible...

You don't swipe uo to get Google Now to come up. You press and hold the Menu button while on the home screen. That should do the trick.

You can also hold the home key down then click the g button. You can access google now that way no matter what your doing.

How can i add more apps to that CIRCLE?
I only have google now and there is a lot of space for 4 more shortcuts..
When my screen turns off and I press the home button to wake the screen, any applications or notification popups I had disappears as the home button is being too "aggressive" and immediately takes me to the home screen.
Did I miss a setting somewhere to prevent this?
Thanks.
It seems the only way to prevent this is by enabling Swipe Lock. I guess this is why it's enabled by default?
I'm having the same problem no matter what I do when the screen times out and I press home it takeme back to my home screen. ..Have you found a solution yet?

In S-Voice app, bring up settings, make sure option to "Open via the home key" is checked. This will allow the home button to only wake the device when the screen is off. Unfortunately, this also introduces some lag when pressing the home button, as the software is waiting to see if you register a double click.

I hate that lag, that's why I unchecked it and ran into this Home Button problem.
The lag is pretty bad, like 2-3 seconds. Not practical.
So far i'm loving my new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (i317m). I've modified the setting to bypass the lock screen when i click the Home button.
The issue i'm seeing now is the screen is blanked, i click the home button, i can see the app i was using before the blanking BUT the screen promptly flashes taking me to the Home screen.
Is there any way to have the lock screen removed AND to have the home button NOT take me to the home screen IF when the home button is pressed the screen was blanked? A simple IF conditional.
Thanks for any help.
I'm trying to understand your AND statement "AND to have the home button NOT take me to the home screen IF when the home button is pressed the screen was blanked"
The first statement is easy, just pick no lock in settings but + AND statement?

Thanks so much for the response.
Yes the "AND" part is the tough part and the reason i asked it. I will clarify. The situation is this. I am well aware of the option Lock Screen >> Screen Lock | None. This was a useful option when i discovered it some time back as now when my unit blanks and i go to hit the home button to wake it up, the unit wakes and take me automatically to the Home screen bypassing the annoying Lock Screen. Terrific.
For those of us who have this option set will quickly notice an issue. If, for instance, one had Google Talk app running before the screen blanked, and later returned to wake up the unit by clicking the Home button (expecting to continue within GTalk), he will briefly see the GTalk app and then it will disappear and will now see the Home screen. One must now navigate back to the app.
I would like the Home button, if pressed to wake up the unit, to remain in the current application. This would be similar to the Power Button functionality. I'm hoping there is a "fix" for this nuisance.
UPDATE: It seems Samsung recognized this nuisance / bug and has corrected it within 4.1.2 but sadly it wont be available thru my Carrier for at least another 6 months (Canada is a bit slow with updates).
** I still would appreciate any work around in the meantime
UPDATE:
I neglected to mention i had the settings of S-Voice modified disabling opening S-Voice if the double click of the Home button occurred. I did this to speed up any Home button clicks.
I just discovered if i have this settings enabled it appears to prevent the click of the Home button to wake from exiting the existing app. The prob now is my Home button takes 1 sec (as opposed to 0.4 secs) to snap back to home when pressed. Sheesh.
Ugly but it is a start.
