Has anyone used this yet on the fire and if they did? ur reviews u liked it or hated it??
I used Calibre for a few days just to try it out and reverted back to the dropbox method. It did what it was supposed to just fine (I suppose, first time using it) but found that I didn't like the default directory it moved my books to. I'm also using some different reader apps for different types of e-books, so I tried out the conversion tool built into Calibre. It definitely converted my file (after about 45 mins.) and then looked pretty rough in my reader once I moved it over to my kfire.
Best readers I've found so far..
-ezPDF Reader - For all my .pdf books
-Cool Reader - For everything else
also used Moon+ Reader for it's library of books.
So... Yes the Calibre worked fine with the KFire. It's news function is great. Gathering articles and newspapers from 1500 different sources and making them into an easy to read format with which you can transfer to your KFire or read with Calibre's built in e-reader. Good app to help with your library too if you have a lot of books.
Good app and works for KFire, I just like doing it the hard way I guess.
I've used Calibre since 2009. I love it. Its great for formatting different ebooks to other file types: pdf, .ebub, .lit. I use it in conjunction with Aldiko Book reader. Aldiko is bar none to best ereader app i've found for Android.
I have used it for several years on my Kindle 2 and now Fire. I love the way I can use it to save genre and upload-translate to either Kindle. It keeps all my books in one spot. What's not to love? I don't seem to have any conversion problems between various formats.
ON the Kindle 2, there is a plug in that allows making collections automatically using the tags or genre etc. Alas this doesn't work for the Fire, but it isn't Calibre's fault, the Fire doesn't support collections. I sure wish it did, it makes finding books really nice on the Kindle 2.
Thanks to everyone!! loving my new fire

I have the same problem with Calibre. I bought my first e-ink reader (Nook) a month ago. I have around a few hundred ebooks in my collection. I downloaded caliber. Althought it’s a great e-book management software, I have a couple of problems with it. Specifically the way it stores your ebooks after importing them. It organizes/stores e-books in its library in folders in the following order: Author --> Book Title -->Actual e-book file (epub/mobi etc).
However, I have always stored my books in this manner:
* If a book is in only one format, I won’t put it in a separate folder and will rename it the following way: Book Title – Author Name.epub
* If a book is in more than one format, I will put the e-book files in a separate folder in the following manner: Book Title – Author Name.epub, Book Title - Author Name. mobi
Having my e-books in the above way makes it easier for me to organize them. Its just a personal preference, I guess. I am wondering if its possible to organize your Caliber Library this way. I have looked around but wasn’t able to find my answer.
I hope someone else can provide some insight?
Thanks.
Yep, works well, although some formats end up in documents rather than ebooks.

Hate trying to read PDFs on your WP7??!!
Me too!
So after a long day of reformatting PDFs, attempts at reading already uploaded PDFs from GDOCs (mobile site and app,) I was nearly ready to give up and chalk up this experience to a wasted day... Then voila! I noticed the amazingly convenient (yet painfully under-stocked) app "media console" by Overdrive which I have used to read library books; has a great option to add your own sites where you can access EPUBs (electronic publications.)
I then discovered www.2epub.com where I could upload (or insert links) to my PDFs and convert them to EPUBs. Using some lovely JavaScripty upload and conversion, I was then able to copy my newly converted EPUBs download links to media console.
Presto change-o I can now read my PDFs (now EPUBs) from the convenience of my windows phone, nicely formatted and easy to read.
I hope this helps

I use Calibre for converting important PDFs to ePub and then upload those files to dropbox, from where I can pull it via Freda, an eBook reader that supports several formats.
Good to know, can you do all that from the phone? I am unfamiliar with Calibre and Freda.

For the Calibre solution that dkp mentions, you have to run Calibre on a desktop PC.
But I just checked out the www.2epub.com site, with Freda. And I can confirm that works too. The steps are:
1) Create a new 'website source' for www.2epub.com
2) Navigate to it, tap the 'URL' button and enter the URL you want to convert, and then follow the instructions ... the site's javascript runs quite slowly on WP7 but it gets there.
3) When the 2epub site displays the EPUB download link, tap on it.
4) The EPUB will open in Freda.
A neat site - thanks for pointing it out.
sounds neat, however I still do not understand how it seems impossible to get a good PDF reader on WP7 -.-
My problem with all the converters, besides extra work, is that they mostly cannot handle PDFs with lots of pictures/graphs/diagramm.... Sad but true =(

Nope, Calibre is a desktop software. But it's convinient and fast.

I have checked and where media console by overdrive has a better layout IMO and is easier to work with; Freda does allow you to press and hold onto images to view them in a picture viewer mode, I will have to look at a chart to see what happens in those instances.

The version of Freda that's on the marketplace at the moment has an issue with GIF files (so you may find some charts don't work, as they are often stored in GIF format). The next release of Freda, now in public beta test, will fix this issue.
I have played around with several and found Aldiko to best suit my needs. Here are my reasons:
1) First and foremost, easy access to Creative Commons titles. I have grabbed most of Cory Doctorow's works (I own them all in paper form) and Charles Stross titles as well (ditto). I mean what good is a reader without a library?
2) Pleasant, easy to access, easy to use, interface. Easy to adjust brightness, switch to night-time mode, change font size, etc.
3) Intuitive, basically no learning curve.
Anybody else try it?
I should have also mentioned Aldiko Sync, a app that lets you sync with Dropbox.
I use it too. Tried go book and some others, but aldiko is the only one that is usable on my phone and almost perfect on my cm7 nook and touchpad

I like Aldiko. I also like FB Reader because it has a small apk size and is fast, but it is not as visually appealing as Aldiko..
Hey everyone. Just got an 8 gig N7 from staples last week and have been loving it! have an Iconia A500 but it was a lil too bulky for reading books/comics so wanted something smaller. this fits perfect! ANYWAY.......long story short....i have been using Moon+ paid for reading a few PDFs and ePubs but came across a torrent of like 1100-ish ebooks in MOBI format. trying to find an app that can open MOBI files...preferrably with a "shelf" type interface. i heard the kindle app will do it, tested it out with some Lord of the Rings mobis....which worked....so copied the rest of the files to the same folder as the LOTR files but now the new files dont show up. thanks for the help!

So if you email them individually to your kindle email address on Amazon, they show up in the "archived" section in the kindle app. You can download them from the archived section individually. It will sync read status along any real kindles and kindle apps then too.
Use amazon kindle reader
Download the .mobi files into the kindle directory
I've been using FBReader instead of the Kindle app. I've found that if you have too many files in the Kindle folder, the Kindle app will be a bit erratic. FBReader seems to handle non-DRM mobi files quite nicely.
I wish Google's Reader app (Books?) would read mobi files. I love the page-turn animation
Just get amazon's kindle app. That's the only app that syncs my reading position seamlessly.
Kind of miss the iBooks app on iOS...at least they did that right
Another vote for the Kindle App.
interesting that you all had such success with Kindle. i seem to think that ctbear may be right in that if there are too many files in the Kindle directory, it makes the app ac weird. being that i copied over 1100 books to my kindle folder might have overloaded the app a bit. dont ask why i have to have so many on there...lol guess i'll have to cut the amount of mobi's down to a more reasonable amount.
I use FBReader for .mobi and Moon+ Reader for everything else. Works great for me.
Try out coolreader. It's a awesome app and have so many options and it has an electronic reader (although it sounds like a robot at the moment).
For comics I recommend Comic Rack, I use Amazon for Mobi books...

It was me actually
I'd like a reader that will read .mobi, has a nice page turn animation & will sync across devices (Kindle will but only for Amazon purchased books)
I've found a few threads on this, but nothing related exactly to the nexus 7.
Just bought mine, mostly to use for university since I have to read dozens of pdfs and books each year, and wanted to save on printing.
I've had Ezpdf for some time, and while it works really well it has a tendency to crash when I'm highlighting... not fun... its slow to save so I lose a few pages of notation each time it crashes.
I have it hooked to dropbox, which is vital.
Anyone know of a better pdf annotator that works just as well and can sync with dropbox?
btw, I've used qpdf which I found real clunky and iAnnotate which is still taking baby steps.
Anyone else?

I spoke too soon. Just checked and there are only beta alternate apps for android. None of them allow for pdf note-taking.
I've used iAnnotate in the past and liked it. But now since Adobe Reader has annotating capabilities, I just use it.
imho Adobe Reader is just enough for everything. I have yet to find a better one...
I was trying to use Adobe reader, but its lack of cloud support make it much more difficult.
I just found Foxit pdf for android (have no idea how I missed it last time). Looks like the perfect match for studies. Never found foxit written down on any other forum site. Its an amazing app so far and looking forward to further development.
Buy EZPDF. Now.
That is all.
But seriously, it IS the best annotator out there. Underlining, strikethroughs, double-page viewing, TONS of options and settings, drawing, highlighting, custom colours for all of these writing tools, text boxes - the works. And it's pretty quick, too.
The crashes while highlighting, by the way, have JUST been introduced - Android 4.3 seemed to cause them. They're the biggest annoyance for me, too. The crash is directly tied to the length of time you hold your finger down. Around ~3 seconds seems to trigger it on my Nexus 10. They're quick to address bug reports, I'd suggest emailing them.
Repligo is the best. Sorry but nothing comes close...
Hello,
I have the note 12.2, but I rarely ever use it.
What are some apps you recommend?
Thank you,
Wapisiw
It all depends on what you want to do with it. This thing is perfect for multimedia use: films, series, comics, magazines, games, art.
But if you don't want to do any of those on a tablet, I'm afraid no app is going to be the perfect solution.
So, what kind of apps are you looking for?
I find myself in the same boat....bought the 905V when it first came out on Verizon, bought a TON of Editing, Writing, Music Creation, Animation apps....and now I barely turn the thing on. I also have a Sony Z2 Tablet.....which is also barely used. I've only recently FORCED myself to take the Note to work and use it in meetings to scribble down notes using Papyrus, but once I'm done-it gets turned off and forgotten about again.
Agree with ShadowLea, want/need should drive usage. This isn't purely a "build it and they will come" kind of thing . .
Any number of us can site applications and workflows that we've come up with but these may not be best for your wants/needs so it's better to start with what you want out of the device and go from there.
Marvel unlimited (for those boring meetings
Inkredible
Art Flow
Guardian, ny times
Lecture notes

Comcast infinity

Biophilia (bjork is the queen)

Teamviewer (hey look, i can pretend to work from home..)
And the ultimate app (cats required though) Cat Alone, when my cat sees me grabbing my tablet he sits next to me, and starts annoying me until I let him play this game for at least 5 minutes, really!
How dare you not use this fine piece of technology ma'am?!
For me, this tablet is all about books. And the best app for that? Moon Reader Plus. There are, of course, other good ones. But really -- pop up a PDF book on this baby. Start reading. SuWEET. Or grab a micro-sd card and dump around 10,000 books of all kinds onto it. Then open 'em up via Moon Reader or some other Reader and enjoy.
Second app I'll mention is MySword Bible reader. There are websites dedicated to storing legally obtainable and *free* Greek Lexicons, Commentaries, Dictionaries, and more for that program.
Third app I'll mention comes with the Samsung install for free.... and this is when you want to write instead of read. The Hancom Office Apps -- esp. the word processor -- are very, very nice. You should have a Samsung or other working Blue Tooth keyboard for best results.
And... that is it for now. But yes, it really is about that big screen and the books. For me, anyway.
Blessings.

Moon Reader, eh? I've never tried it but since you're obviously a reader, as I am myself, I'm going to check it out today. I got the 'AlReader' since it's free and it does okay for my .epub formats but of course, it's nothing fancy. The Hancom Office was on offer for free with the tablet so I downloaded that from the link to it already on my Note Pro and it handles my .pdf books with its own viewer - and on landscape view, which means everything.
I downloaded the Multiling O Keyboard because as long as the list is of languages available from Samsung, there are stll a few I use that are not included. I don't know if that's the best one but it has a very ample selection.
If you're interested in food, Wapisiw, and for anybody else who may be, I found a real treasure at the app store. The real treasure is the developer, Ha3apko, from Russia, who manages to give you the feeling of having been invited into the kitchen of a friend who really loves food. All the apps work beautifully offline as well as online - though you will get more pics next to the instructions online - and they all are designed for both landscape and portrait view; oh, and they're free but you can donate if you like. These aren't like any other cooking app I've ever seen; they are apps 'with heart.' This developer could even make comatose people get up and start cooking! You'll find all the apps just by searching the app store for the developer name. I started out with his 'Dumpling Recipes' and went back and got them all.
Mantano is a great book reader - Moon Reader was down for a few weeks and you couldn't download the book covers so I tried that one and I actually like that a lot better but still flip-flop from the two as moon reader is the only one that would allow you to read mobi files

Moon Reader also allows for storing the books where *I* want them to be, and using its internal file and folder browser I can even organize them into genres and authors (which I've done). Funny how all the control-freak big companies (both Kindle and Nook) disallow such basic amenities.
