Dual/Multi Botting on the Inc2 - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

When I had the OG DInc, I was using Conaps "DualRom" multiboot solution and was running 4 or 5 roms on my phone at a time. Which is great for someone like me who loves to flash different roms pretty much daily.
Anyways.... I did a little searching and everything regarding dual or multi booting I could find for the DInc2 generally suggested using BootManager, which is an app on the market and is not free. Call me cheap, or whatever, but I prefer open source and free apps. Back on the OG Inc someone had written a guide on how to do this without needing any fancy app, though it was long and tedious it worked quite well.
Does anyone know of a writeup for our phones for installing multiple roms?

Will ROM manager suit your needs?
I use ROM manger to boot all the ROMS i want. IDK If thats what your asking for but if you want a paid android app then do a google search.

Well if thats the case, then I am gonna try evolving the guide for doing it manually on the DInc to the DInc2.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, it shouldn't be that hard to go off the guide for the OG DInc. Mostly what would need to be changed is the mount points, assuming they use different mount points on the DInc2.

Yea, 4gb of actual emmc.
VZW told me that my Red DIncII would have 4gb of internal memory. HA!
The only way I can get the emmc to show up on the DIncII is to flash ICS B2.
It shows as a folder with 0.0 bites in size.
I just do it the old fashioned way of wipe n flash...

[Q] What ROM to suit me?

I started with a Hero, now an EVO...but my roommate has an Epic 4g on Sprint.
I've been doing some reading on available ROM's, but I need suggestions.
I'm wondering what the preferred ROM is for most people right now?
I'd like to work on it having good battery life, have all functions work (4g, FFC, all that) and I'd like it to be quick.
What should I load her up with?
Really its trial and error plus preference... Atleast I think so today I flashed like 7 roms lol... Then had to do stuff... but just rot the device and load them on the sd card.. make sure your getting the right ones for either rfs or ext4 depending what your on... otherwse it won't load and you'll think your screwed (learned earlier today.... thanks for the elp digi) lol

Trial and error has never been much more than a small part in doing ROM's across these phones. I've been able to find a good ROM for my EVO after trying only two thanks to reading the forum and following recommendations of others who've already done it.
I'm sure there are many people here who have plenty of experience with ROM's on the Epic, I'm simply looking for experienced recommendations.
Dk28 stock
I get great battery an everything works, but there are little kinks here and there
I just flashed meat rom since its the only one that supports rfs anymore

Lol android development section is getting raided by the same question over and over but its ok i like answering this question. We cant port it over until we get a gingersense leak for our incredible and take the kernel from that to actually get sense 3.0 to boot up because up until now we havent booted sense 3.0 or gingersense on our device.
Give it to me straight...so your saying there's a chance? Lol

Of course there is just look at the evo they basically sense 3.0 with everything working except some apps resized but they have the important parts like rosie and lockscreen. We are a little late in the race but once we get our Gingersense leak for the droid incredible i am certain that our devs will have a port for us on that very same day.
Look at it this way, the EVO guys are doing all of our Dev's hardest work for them. 3.0 has been a royal PITA for them, but supposedly Virus has a 99.9% work ROM that he's going to upload at some point tonight.
I cant wait for sense 4.5. Gonna be sick!
I read it somewhere it cant because the file size is too large. I don't know, I just read it somewhere.

Indeed, the Incredible's internal ROM is too small to accommodate Sense 3.0; however, with the advent of things like DualRom, we are able to partition emmc as bootable media, therefore granting 6 gigs of space for any ROM.

We can also shift around partition sizes and make system bigger and take here and there from the other partitions for those who don't want to lose emmc... I've already done it but nobody decided on how much space they needed on system.

I would say we need at least 350mb. Maybe 400. I think we have 250 right now right. The system size on the ruu is 577mb without removing anything. We can shrink it some.

Awesome, this is good news. I always thought it would be possible and that all we were waiting on was a version of GB that already had the sense framework overlaid.

All you have to do is delete the partition table and remake the partitions with a program such as fdisk. AFAIK the internal memory is just one (or two) flash chips that are partitioned off and mounted to separate directories. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that's all you have to do.
i tried playing around a bit last night with my doubleshot (espresso 3.0) port on the tbolt, but even symlinking stuff back to /system was giving me issues. granted i didnt try too hard, i didnt have too much time.
who else is legitimately working on it? ive got that and the sensation working on the tbolt, and i have most of the sensation (normal 3.0) resized and working, and itd be easy to get data for the inc, you could have a DD pretty easily. Id like to see what a group of us could come up with

Virus' was 353 on the EVO. He's gotten a hell of a lot working, still probably 3 or 4 releases away from being a daily ROM but for being something that no one said would work, it's a pretty big accomplishment.
BTW, they're running DTA2SD to get around the size issue cause by partitioning the system file that big.

How exactly did you get it to boot on the T-bolt. I've been hearing that you basically need a GB Sense leak and kernel, or to build a kernel from scratch.

That's incorrect. Mtd doesn't work like that, the partition table is passed to the kernel at boot by the bootloader.

Nice, I bet r2 ported a DHD GB leak then and used that to port 3.0. Course I could be totally wrong haha.
Are you going to keep trying to port GB or just wait for a leak?

Incredible-S roms on Dinc2?

Now that we have S-off (thanks alpharev donations def on the way) and we are working at getting a recovery wouldnt it be possible to port incredible-s roms, since they are almost the exact same phone? Different radios and a few other things? Im not a dev, just wondering if anyone is considering that. Since there are a ton of roms out already for the Inc-S.
Incredible S has official support of CM (no release yet that I'm aware of, haven't checked in a couple days). I don't see why this can't be extended to the I2.

I miss CM7. I had a G2 that I rooted (painstaking root process by hand and terminal emulator) and that was such a great stable rom. I tried a few others MIUI, Mexidroid... ect. All in all CM7 was the best. I would be so happy if they support it. Although I do have to say, im really starting to get used to Sense. Its a really nice interface. If I had to have one, ide take this of stupid motoblur or touchwiz anyday.
I stopped using Sense in lieu of LauncherPro some time ago as that was the environment I was use to while using CM7. Can't wait to get back to CM7 so the bloat is gone and I get the unleash the full potential of my I2.
I would love to see MIUI, I had it on my original INC and I love it. Weekly updates and it seems like they just keep improving it. Very fast and stable. Long way from where it started.
I recently sold my inc and now I'm stuck with a palm pre plus. I was going to hold out for the droid 3 or bionic but if the inc 2 gets cm support I will have a hard time not buying one.

To answer the OP's question. Yes. Incredible S --> Incredible 2 ports will be disgustingly easy.
As a matter of fact, we should be able to make a universal 'patcher' that you can flash after any incredible S rom to make it 100% dinc2 compatible. No porting necessary.
1- Flash Incredible S rom
2- Flash patcher script
3- Done city

Well that would be Incredible (no pun intented)
It's possible it could be that simple. However, I suspect we will need a different kernel and different driver set. I believe our radio hardware is slightly different (I could be wrong on this), as well as filesystem layout.
Of course, we can't know this for sure until the work actually starts. I suspect it'll be easy to port over, but not THAT easy, unfortunately. Considering AlphaRev is using only a slightly modified hboot from the IS for the I2, it very well could be that easy

I disagree on how easy that will be, you will need a different RIL (and associated files, including phone.apk and settings.apk most likely) along with a different kernel.

Everything you mentioned can be done with just a few lines in a patcher. I've done it before. It's not rocket science. And when its done, it can be universally applied to all roms between the two devices. Even a tiny bit of logic to determine source vs sense. (otherwise resulting in two patchers)

You are getting bashy. And you are clearly trying to belittle my statements by requesting direct links to my work, in order to disprove something you know damn well is possible. We have been doing between the desire/evo/inc/n1/etc for a long time now. Even kiddie kitchens have a button to 'port' a rom.
Regardless of how many 'lines' a script would be, flashing would be dead simple by the end user. And yes, creating it should be very easy on my end.

Question for the Droid Incredible XDA Community

Hello everyone, I'd like to start this out by saying that I hope to not get flamed with this post. I do not own an Incredible (however I have played with MANY roms over the past two years with my various Android Phones). That being said, I've got a very... Well known client (public figure) who uses an Incredible. He has had *nothing* but trouble with it, especially since after the Gingerbread update (low storage space issues, needed to restore phone more than once, etc etc).
He is talking about getting an iPhone, but I would like him to get the "pure" Android experience before he makes a definitive decision. Essentially, he is tired of all the bugs and wants something that "just works".
My question to you guys:
Without me having to go through countless pages upon pages of posts, what in your guys' opinion is the best "stock" (whether that be CM7 or AOSP ROM) for the Incredible? What bugs (there area always bugs in ROMS right?) should I expect from the ROM and what should I notify him of in advance?
At this point in time, i'd say anything is better than stock gingerbread with HTC bloat that screws everything up constantly.
I just really need to make sure I put a solid ROM on his phone so that A) He will be happy and B) I will not be discredited on the air to hundreds of thousands of listeners.
Again, i'm not looking to be flamed for "not searching". I run a business, I do not have time to go through every single AOSP/CM thread to see every minute bug that is reported. Also, since this is not my phone, and he is a very busy person, I will have limited time to get this "right". I am just merely looking for your recommendations and experiences.
Thank you in advance everyone!
CM7 if you want a full pure android experience. If you want Sense, try one of the stock Sense roms that gets updated (Not mine. My inc died ) like Stock+ or McSense. Best of luck with your client! Don't let him switch to an iphone lol
Very few bugs (If any) on these. I can provide links if needed

Excellent thank you. I was leaning towards getting away from Sense entirely (AOSP or CM7) because he is absolutely sick of the way HTC has treated his stock incredible. All of these bugs are simply inexcusable. I know that the versions of Sense here on XDA most likely do not get the low storage issue... But i'd rather get him on pure Google. Them upgrade him to ICS when that hits
CM7.1, definitely. Mine's stable as a rock. It's a lot more stable than ANYTHING I've messed with on it, including stock.
I'd recommend putting CM7.1 on it until the Galaxy Nexus comes out, then convince the client that they need it.

I know previously on CM7 builds (not for the Incredible) i've had broken wifi at times, broken GPS, etc, etc. As long as this is "rock" solid like you say... I'd say that is the most viable option! Thanks man!

No bugs that I know of. I only ran it for a couple of days though. The nightlies tend to fix any bugs, but may have bugs of their own.
Bugless Beast is an aosp alternative to CM. It still runs on nightlys but the latest build is like 99% working and is rock solid. Stock GB.

CM7.1 is my vote. McSense if going the sense route.
I've not tried bugless beast yet simply because I love the ring lockscreen that the CM team cooked up. I also love the theme chooser that CM7 has.

Yeah. I personally don't like MIUI, but if you check their website, they have the latest build up. The last one I tried had a few minor bugs, but not bad. I'm sure they have been fixed though.
Cm 7.1. With the flashable adrenaline mod and incredikernel. Its been rock solid for me for almost a month.
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
Root that thing and throw CM7 on it. They wont complain anymore. Ive been doing CM7 since it came out for the DInc and it has only gotten better. 7.1 is incredibly (pun intended) stable. And runs very smoothly. I think its probably more stable than stock. My DInc used to restart on its own all the time. I have not had that happen once with CM7. Battery life is great. With heavy texting, email, facebook, reddit usage. I get thru a day and usually have some juice left over. It can get to around 18% but still would last overnight if i forgot to plug it in, and still be at 18% in the morning!
Mine flies with CM7 and hasn't had any problems. My sister also has a DInc. She has been experiencing the low memory problem, I finally talked her into letting me root it and Rom it. CM7 is the way to go for a flawless experience. It is a little tidius to flash CWM and downgrade using ADB. It actually really inst necessary to downgrade and get s-off. I was able to install CWM on her phone and flash CM7 and gapps without a hitch. You have to use unrevoked 3.22 exe and do a custom recovery in administrator mode. (there is a write up somewhere here.)
after CWM was installed I flashed CM7. and it works great with s-on. The only time i think there would be a problem is if you wanted to flash an unsigned rom. but CM7 is signed so no biggy.
I will be sad to let my DInc go when I upgrade to either a galaxy nexus or a rezound in the next few months.
Good luck.
Use Bugless Beast if you want him to stay on Android, otherwise there is a highly underrated ROM called IncDeck 1.3... It's probably on the second page of the forums but that is the single best pure google ROM. The reason no one posts anything to the forum is because they have no issues to speak of lol.
Edit: I typed this from my droid 2... but I got it on friday lol. I'm not just talking out of my ass.

Excellent thank you for the suggestions everyone! I have to say, the Incredible userbase is much more friendly and forthcoming than many others I have encountered here on XDA (coughSamsungDevicescough)!
As of right now, I am leaning towards Bugless Beast, as I really want him to be impressed by the speed. Also, since he wants things to "just work" I think the less options (like those extras presented in CM7) the better.
Should I worry about the rooting process for the Incredible with the Gingerbread update? Do I need to downgrade firmware, etc?
Also, I know right now he is using stock Verizon VVM... Is that an issue to get working on this?... I may try to convert him to Google Voice if that is the case.
Thanks again, you guys rock!

I was hoping that would be resolved by getting off of stock gingerbread alone? I've met numerous people with this issue... Even though their phones have HUGE amounts of free space, the Incredible reports that their storage is full. This results in FC's getting no emails etc. I've tied it to the HTC mail app, the Peep app, and a few other programs. If you clear cache/data it is a temp fix but then it will occur again at some point, much to their frustration.

People have had success downgrading to 2.2 with THIS.
As for VVM, I'm not quite sure if it works on AOSP so it may be better to put him onto Google Voice. It's free and it is much easier to use.

I would possibly suggest using the ext4 no limit mod as you had said he was getting the storage full message.

The full storage error is what many Inc users that updated to the GB 2.3.4 update faced. That particular update screwed up a lot of peoples phones but after rooting and flashing a different ROM, he should be fine.
One final issue i've had... This client has always saved his contacts as "phone contacts" rather than "google contacts". Does anyone know of an app that will batch upload them to Google?

Use Backup Assistant and backup all their contacts then login to MyVerizon and export contacts to a csv file. From there you can import then into your Google account.
I made that mistake when first rooting my phone. Never again...lol

To Root or Not To Root?

Coming from an Evo 4G that I had rooted right after I got it... ran a ton of different ROMs and that phone seemed like it needed to be rooted to really make it run right... I'm finding that I really don't see any benefit to rooting this phone (other than free tether)...
So, am I missing something? What are these improvements in these custom ROMs that are making it worth it to root... this thing is so freakin awesome already I just can't think of anything else I need...
There are tons of perks in the custom ROMs: themes, TSM-mod, cm7, MIUI, faster lighter ROMs, debloated, Rouge recovery to name a few. If you flashed roms on the EVO im sure its just a matter of time until you dive into the ET4g dev section.
ignore this

What's "TSM-mod" and "Rogue recovery".. Or more precisely, what are the advantages of them?
I've looked around at the Dev section but the phone's been out long enough that it's hard to find threads that actually explain what all this is.. it's just assumed that I already know...
I know, I know.. use the search fxn... you dont have to flame me... I'll find out on my own

Reason to flash=MIUI.
Calkulin's rom is great for a boost of performance on a stock rom as well...
Honestly, if you're happy with the phone as is, then maybe you should just leave it as it is until something comes along that makes you change your mind. Having a stock/unrooted phone is not a sin

Tsm is like Cyanogen settings from the cm7 roms, but compatible with Samsung ROMs, Rogue recovery is clockwork recovery but redone, the options are grouped better, better theme, a lot less pain in the ass to use.
Oh yea check out qbking77's videos, he does a lot of how to's and reviews of ET4g ROMs, great stuff.

I completely agree. That's what I do with my phones. It also gives you time to get really comfortable with the new device as I know quite a few things change going from an htc phone to a samsung device. I generally will use the phone as is out of the box until I find something I can't bear, don't like or if there is actually a defect of some sort in the software. At which point, I check xda and see if there are fixes for said problems. If there are fixes and you're comfortable, root it and give it a shot. I'd suggest Calkulin's as it kinda seems like the go to rom for just about everyone on here, then maybe venture into the abyss. I'd suggest staying away from modems and other mods until you understand them and are comfortable.
I agree as well, nothing wrong rocking a completely stock phone. There are times I run a stock (debloated) rom just for a change.
I'm running a rooted with no fancy rom phone here. The only reason I haven't flashed a rom yet is because my first phone had GPS problems and this one doesn't. And plus, my evo with 3.0 rom has its own issues too. So I just don't want to jinx it. My wife's phone has the GPS problem. Thinking about bringing it in to the store for a replacement.

Thanks man, for the info and the referral. I'm comfortable enough with rooting and tech that it's just a matter of learning the different names for things, as it all goes by something different over here.
And thanks to everyone else for their input... I think I'm just gonna run it stock until I find something I can't live with.. Because right now, I love this thing.
Ok, scratch that.. I rooted yesterday.. just couldn't help myself, I need to be able to tweak the notifications toggles...
Like a drug, its good stuff you probably don't like nascar anyways either or kies or the allinone messenger battery sucker or the.... well ya dig..?

To be perfectly honest with you the way to go is stock rooted. None of the TW roms are really offering anything so much more exciting than stock TW. But definitely root it. On the practical side you can use the Wireless Tether app (if needed) block ads (a big thing for me) and access all files through Root Explorer. IMO those are reasons enough to root. In a nutshell, if you root your stock ROM you aren't really altering it and it is super easy to revert to non-rooted so there really is no downside as far as i can tell.
I debated the same thing... to root or not to root? I rooted and i am glad i did!
I held off for a while too but miui and the xplode roms are awesome. Just something different.

Well I rooted and flashed Calk's ROM... within 5 minutes it was having freezes and what not so I said screw it and restored my nandroid of stock... I'll be stayin here for a while.
Edit: not saying anything bad about Calk's work... It prolly would've been resolved with a wipe and clean install and some tweaking but I'm just wanting fast stability right now and stock TW is super fast and my battery life is awesome
