[Q] Question about purchasing from a Bell store - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everyone.
I'm looking shortly to make the jump from my 1 year old SGS to the lovely new Galaxy Nexus. However, when I purchased my SGS, the morons at the Bell store locked me in to a 3-year contract while charging me and showing in many parts of the contract that it's a 1-year term. Rather than argue it (the plan I'm on is a very solid plan in terms of value/money) I'd like to just buy the Galaxy Nexus outright for the $700 or whatever it costs.
However, doing some reading around here, it seems like people are having issues getting Bell and other stores to sell them the Galaxy Nexus without also signing into a new plan. This is not what I want - I'd rather get the phone and stick with the 2 or so years left on my plan. Being an existing Bell customer, should I be okay to just walk in and walk out with a new Galaxy Nexus without my plan ever being touched - or should I look for another way to get the device?
If it matters, I'm part of a corporate plan, not a consumer plan.
Thanks!

If your a Bell customer they have to sell it to you outright if you want it. I have bought many phones from them on launch day with no worries( I'm with Bell btw). However if your not a Bell customer they will most likely make you sign up.

Bell customer or not, they won't sell it to you outright. You either need to be eligible for a hardware upgrade or open a new account.
I am a bell customer and ended up buying it from Virgin outright after i tried several bell stores as well as futureshop and best buy.

I am not a bell customer and every store i went to in toronto would not sell it me outright unless i was an existing bell customer. I ended up having to give them a friend of mines bell cell number and they sold me the phone outright without changing the existing contract

Installing a Sprint ROM on a Bell phone?

Forgive me if this has been stated months ago, but I am not able to find the answer to my question.
After getting my Blackberry wet and managing to kill it, I was left with no phone, a 33-month contract, no eligability for a discount on a new phone, and a $400 ETF (god I love Canada, but Bell can Burn in the Blood world). So Ihave no choice but to get the cheapest contract-free phone possible, which turns out to be the Samsung Ace at $99.
Problem is Bell does not offer 6.1 for this phone while Sprint in the USA does.
So, is it possible to install the OS from another carier onto this phone, or will it render the network unusable?
thanks

Sim unlocked Galaxy Nexus on Virgin

Just a heads up for anyone who is thinking of getting one from Virgin Mobile. It is Sim Unlocked. I just got one and am using it on Wind Mobile.
Yup all nexus devices come unlocked
So is the Bell one!!
How much is it?
$649 + 13% tax.
It isn't supposed to bit my Galaxy Nexus from Bell came unlocked too. I'd assume they'd fix that issue in the second batch so beware

Ouch. That's rough.
Yeah they are unlocked, but I mean good luck getting one without a contract.
Nobody is selling it without a contract. I don't know if this is legal or not but they just won't give it to you.
So I just went and picked up a sealed Virgin unit from craigslist... considering I'd have to pay tax and as I've heard one month of Virgin service (I'm on Fido) I think I came out even or ahead slightly maybe.

You and 100's of others really need to stop spreading mis-information. It's a Nexus development phone which I'm guessing doesn't mean anything to you.
Updates, patches, fixes don't come from bell they come directly from Google. This isn't like the galaxy s or s II running touchwiz and bell crapware. Its a nexus phone running vanilla android.
Take some time to educate yourself and read a little bit on the Nexus 1, Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus and you'll start (I hope) to understand that they are not carrier specific phones.

if they are not selling the GNex off-contract,Why do they advertise the off-contract price?

Hey now, no need to insult the guy.
He isn't the one spreading misinformation, it's the jerkoff Bell employees who are outright spreading misinformation (which was likely handed down directly from their managers).
We all know Nexus phones are supposed to be unlocked, but when you go into a corporate Bell store, some guy in a Bell uniform unequivocally tells you otherwise then you begin to doubt yourself.

I don't know, maybe some CRTC rule they are only half-assedly standing by?
They know they are quite in demand, so they just won't give you one for $650. Mind you this is at Bell corporate, other smaller stores like The Source or Vision's Electronics might sell it to you for $650 for no contract, but not right now when demand would be so high, I would guess minimum 7-10 days from now. You can go to Virgin but I've heard they require one month of service to be activated, that and sales taxes can be a pretty penny on top of the $650 sticker price.
It's like this: Bell and Virgin has a vested interest in getting new contracts, so knowing the SGN is so hot they will come up with lies like "out of stock" or "come down and see us in person." Smaller stores like The Source don't really care if you sign up for a contract since it's not their netowkr, but I assume being a smaller store they can be easily persuaded by the carriers since they could just stop allowing that store to carry their latest phones.
I guess I was lucky one. In BestBuy they did not want to sell mu GN without contract. In the Futureshop same story. Then I call Bell and Virgin stores close to me and I got again same answer. I was so pist off so I decide to go to near BestBay and fight to death. I was ready to go to the manager if is needed.
So i walk into the store, ask for GN and then Bestbuy person ask me how I would like to pay? I sad I am paying in full, no contract. He did not say one word about contract or anything. I just pay for the Virgin GN and walk out. I could not believe my eyes. After all I was going thru miracle happend. wtf, soon I was out of the store I start walking little faster... LOL
I am now width Wind. Unlimited call, messages and data for $30. Bye bye Rogers 4ever. The phone is just amazing. Finally am am 100% happy. December 8 was my very happy day.
So I can confirm GN is working with all providers and it is coming unlocked.

The Source is owned by Bell, but surprisingly I've heard that a couple of people managed to buy the phones outright, no contract.
I was able to buy one from Future Shop outright, but another buddy of mine wasn't able to at a different Future Shop, so I guess it's hit and miss. I was turned down at Best Buy, but apparently others have managed to buy one there.
The small, privately owned dealers are probably the least likely to sell the units outright, they depend on the contract commissions more than they do hardware sales, and will rarely sell a popular new phone without a contract or extended warranty.
Just my 2c...
You guys got lucky, good for you!
Personally, after calling all the stores in my area I gave up and went to craigslist. I knew if I went down to the stores and made my case I could convince them, but then I thought they might not even have them in stock contract or not since it's a hot phone.
So I guess moral of the story is, either go down to the stores and demand what is your right (no contract for $650) or if you can't be bothered then go online to say craigslist or Kijiji. I paid $100 over retail but I didn't pay HST, so not a huge deal considering.
I just wish these guys weren't so sleazy, no reason this should even be any issue, we are paying full-price so nobody is doing anybody any favours.
Using a galaxy nexus happily on Wind Mobile. It seems to be getting faster data speeds than my previous nexus s as well.
I bought mine for $649 from The Source on a $20 1-month virgin mobile plan. They wouldn't sell it to me any other way. So I'll have to call Virgin to cancel in 30 days.
The Bell store wouldn't sell my a Nexus without putting it on my account. No contract extension required but I still needed to be an existing customer.
I was able to buy my GN outright from a bell store in Edmonton, only after I caused a scene and spoke to the manager. He basically begged me to wait for 4 days and offered me $50 in accessories to do so, but I wouldn't budge as my Atrix had a mic issue where no one could hear me.

I did the same, but I was told I can call and cancel after 14 days. They need 30 days notice to cancel though, so we may end up paying for more than 1 month.

Advice on picking up used SGS II?

I have been on the T-Mobile Walmart $30 plan for a while (100mins, 5GB/data, unlimited texting) and it has worked out perfect for my needs. When I signed up, I bought a Samsung Vibrant off of Ebay and have had no problems over the last 4 months or so. Now, my wife wants to do the same thing and get off of AT&T. I have been keeping an eye on Ebay for a Galaxy S II, but am getting nervous about being screwed over with a blacklisted phone, especially since the SGSII is going to cost a lot more than my Vibrant did.
From what I've been reading, it doesn't seem like there is much you can do to try to avoid getting ripped off from an Ebay phone. What really got me nervous was reading about someone that got a phone and had it working on T-Mobile for just over 45 days before they blacklisted it due to the previous owner not paying on the contract they had. That (over 45 days) would make any recourse through Ebay/Paypal pretty hard.
Does anyone have suggestions other than Ebay... and other than paying $600 retail to T-Mobile?
I have purchased used SGS II T989 from people posted their ads in craigslist.org, I strongly suggest this over ebay or something else since the cost with this is lower than e-bay and you have the opportunity to test the device before paying. I put a SIM into the phone, made a phone call, checked wireless, verify that a stock ROM is installed, etc. Pay attention if this is LOCKED to tMBO (or unlocked).
Thanks, I've been checking out Amazon marketplace as well. I haven't seen a T-Mobile Galaxy S II come up on Craigslist in my area. When you mentioned to pay attention if it is locked or unlocked, are you saying that because if it is unlocked that may be a clue that it is banned from Tmobile network?
You can get a brand new in box galaxy S2 for 425 — 475 on Ebay. That's your cheaper safe route than dropping 600 + tax at a tmobile store.

Any other ATT users getting the Tmobile one? Also what's the chance of unlocking?

Any other AT&T users who feel burned by the Note 3 Root fiasco going with a full price Tmobile Note 4 to use on AT&T? I know first question is why not switch to Tmobile, well in my area they don't have good coverage so it's not an option. I plan on signing up for their $40 plan, paying full price for the phone, trading in my old iPhone 4 for $50 and getting the remainder $150 rebate from Samsung then shutting off Tmobile service as soon as I get home.
The only issue with my plan is Tmobile requires 40 days of service before they unlock your phone. Anyone care to guess how long it will take an aftermarket company to have the ability to unlock the Tmobile Note 4 for a fee?
I am in the same boat. I will keep my T plan and just want to purchase the full price TMOB phone. I was unaware I needed to start service with TMOB to buy one. Perhaps my sister who is a TMOB customer will buy it for me. I am not sure the LTE frequencies are the same for TMOB and T. I see some threads that say for the Note that it will work but I am note sure if that is for 3G or LTE. I require LTE or I'll just look at other phones. I am still on a subsidized phone plan so I may just pre-order the T locked crapola phone and sell it discounted to recoupe the part of TMOB phone cost. But I too am looking for confirmation that the TMOB boot loader will be unlocked.
This locked boot loader is a bunch of BS!
Same here. I want to confirm it will be rootable.
I also didn't realize you have to go onto their plan to purchase. I'd think if paying full price it wouldn't be a requirement.
I'll be watching. I'm anxious, but need to be patient.
Well I'm not 100% sure you have to sign up for a plan, I'm just not sure how much resistance or BS you will encounter if you just walk in and say you want a full price phone without getting a plan, IE: without making the rep any money. Maybe it's possible to just buy it outright on the website, I think there is also an option to trade in your phone then because you need to prove a trade in to get the $200 Samsung rebate.
I think the issue is to get it unlocked you have to have it on a Tmobile plan for 40 days. So it's going to have to be an unlocking service that is aftermarket. Do these aftermarket unlocking service typically have access to unlock codes immediately when a new phone is released?
Att user here i will be getting the tmob.. as its official that att and verizon Will not sell devices with unlocked bootladers anymore..
So tmob here i come.. shouldnt take long for xda to come up with an unlock....

Funny ATT and VZW is not afraid to give more business to Tmo. Thats interesting and good for Tmo.
I plan on buying the t-mobile note 4 at full retail price than paying like 10 or less to unlock it from an online site. I then have a note 4 at a lower price than att outright and hopefully a modable phone
Last year I initially bought the Note 3 on ATT and then later bought the t mobile version off of ebay for full retail unlocked. Then returned my ATT version to best buy.
I tried to buy the t mobile version directly from T mobile, but they would not sell to me without my getting a plan. It was going to cost me quite a bit extra to do it that way so I just went to ebay. Swappa may be another option.

Best buy looks like the best option if they have the Tmobile version next week. They are giving a $200 gift card for any traded in phone, which is as good as the Samsung rebate if you like to spend money at BB. You can also just order it full price on the internet no questions asked, no pushy reps.
What do you guys think of warranty issues though? With a ATT phone I'd just go to the ATT warranty center. Since I won't have a Tmobile account I don't think Tmobile will help me with warranty issues. I guess I'm stuck with Samsung for warranty issues. Will a Samsung kiosk take the phone and replace it or send it in, or do I have to deal with Samsung directly?

Best Buy doesn't carry T-Mobile phones or plans other than the prepaid stuff. That's why T-Mobile is excluded from the Best Buy promotion. Amazon also doesn't carry T-Mobile phones/plans other than the prepaid stuff.
You'll need to send it in.
Bleh, I guess I'm stuck with Tmobile and faking their cheapest plan then cancelling when I get home. Oh well, at least I can trade my old iPhone in for the Samsung promo. $549 is not a bad deal for the N4 at all.
Can anyone who has bought a TMOB phone please verify they actually get LTE service on T? Looking at the LTE bands, it appears T verse TMOB used different bands in the same frequency.

Yup, many people get ATT LTE with tmobile phones. Here is a very large thread in the note 3 section on everything you need to know.
See my signature.
I'll never buy another AT&T phone as long as they keep locking the bootloader and going out of their way to prevent root.
T-Mobile S5 got root (and recovery option) the first week it was released. First day maybe even?
AT&T S5 didn't get root until what, seven freaking weeks after release?
This year though, I'm seriously considering just leaving AT&T all together and going with both TMO phone AND plan.
Their coverage in my area is actually better than ATT in some places.
I'm not in a rush to leave my Note 3 behind though.
I'm running an AOSP/CM/Slim based ROM that is absolutely rock solid stable, fast and great battery life and has tons of customization options.
It would be several months before the Note 4 gets a really good AOSP ROM.
A relative of mine has a TMOB plan and I asked them to pre-order the phone for me. They said that TMOB requires you to have a the "jump" plan which they did not use so they would not let them pre-order it.
I assume someone on Flea-Bay will sell unlocked TMOB Note 4 eventually. I guess I'll just have to wait for those to show up. Unless there will eventually is another source without a plan?
Or are all of you preordering them here and then will just cancel the service after you receive it and pay the balance?

Yeah I'm just grabbing it off the website, I'm assuming my plan won't start until I actually activate the phone. As soon as I get the phone delivered I'll cancel the plan and hopefully they don't charge me the first month. Only 2 things I'm not sure of are:
1) They are charging me a $50 deposit versus the first months service, will I get this back? It also says within 12 months!?!? Still I'm ok with it as it's cheaper than the ATT one.
2) What happens to the $22 credit they are giving me for my old phone trade in? I won't have a bill to apply it to, will this get lost?
I have the tmobile note 3 and the at&t note 3,I have at&t service as tmobile service sucks were I am.I bought the tmobile note 3 last year from tmobile full price from store got the cheapest plan then shut it off the next day.I got it unlocked when I got home for 15 bucks from unlock service out of the play store in about an hour.I will never buy a At&t phone again unless the bootloader is unlocked. It took forever just to get root access on the at&t model thats why I bought the tmobile note 3.I can live without the roms but not root.I can assure you I get the same at%t service on my tmobile note 3 as the at&t note 3 including lte on the tmobile note 3.I will be picking up the tmobile note 4 .I want the note edge but there no release date yet so the note 4 will do until I can get the note edge, which will also be picking up the tmobile model using it with at&t service.

That's what I'll be doing.
I've been reading through the Note 3 TMobile-->AT&T thread and am hoping I don't screw up AT&T LTE service if they have my IMEI. (Or lose my grandfathered unlimited plan)
However, I probably just don't fully understand the process yet.

I am not sure how big a PITA it will be to cancel TMOB service the day I receive the phone. Will they hit me with charges other than the cost of the phone and the $10 for the SIM?
It does not sound like the day I receive it I could just stick in my T SIM and go since it comes locked (I assume). Folks with Note 3 experience, please chime in if I am wrong.
Plus, I assume the phone will be locked to TMOB. I was reading that they will unlock it after 45 days, but I wonder if you cancel the service if that is true. I guess someone will offer an unlock service for a nominal amount eventually.
Cancellation and Returns. Service Cancellation: You can cancel a new line of Service, and if applicable, not pay an Early Termination Fee, if you cancel WITHIN 14 DAYS of activating that new line of Service (some states may differ – ask your sales representative) (“Cancellation Period”). I am wondering if it just might be less hassle to wait a few days after the phone ship and buy it from Flea-Bay or Swappa or such, where the phone may come unlocked (to TMOB carrier) out of the box?

[Q] MetroPCS?

I bought D851 from swappa and its coming Thursday this week, I would like to know if MetroPCS would work if the phone is locked tmobile..? Do I need to get it unlocked? I wanted to use it on $60 plan
Any reason why you wouldn't do the T-Mobile prepaid?

Why would you choose metro over t mobile?
Because I'm born deaf then got hearing aid implant, I rarely talk on the phone so I text and use data more. $60 seems good for me rather than $30 plan 5GB since I am out of the house a lot. I'm not used to being on the phone and talk to people because they say something and I don't hear them well so I always needed someone by my side for it. I've been testing on MetroPCS and I was seeing if $30 5GB was good for me but I don't know. I'm sorry if its a bother. Its first time buying a unlocked phone I've saved up for outside of my family's contract plan.
I'm on the MetroPCS $60 Plan. I had no problems using the phone. I was coming from Sprint.
The first t mobile store I went to wouldn't sell me the phone unless I signed up for T-Mobile service. I even got corporate customer service on the office with them, telling them that I could buy the phone without contract.
I ended up leaving, went down the street to a car toys store, and bought the phone for $50 less then the T-Mobile price.
I went into a mwtropcs branch, paid $10 for as sim card, and ported my number from Sprint.
Great coverage in my area (metropcs uses t Mobile towers).
The t mobile phone comes unlocked, so you shouldn't have any problems. Only thing to note is that each version of the g3 has different radios. So the t mobile version might not have as good of coverage on at&t's network.

The t mobile phone comes unlocked, so you shouldn't have any problems. Only thing to note is that each version of the g3 has different radios. So the t mobile version might not have as good of coverage on at&t's network.

Thank you SO MUCH for your reply, I was worrying a lot but you gave me a relief. I bought the T-Mobile G3 in mint condition for good price without original box as the seller have good ratings on swappa, but it hasn't even arrived today because USPS wasn't updating much on the phone tracking and got all the way to Florida passing my state from New York. I live in Virginia and I gotten really upset, I was like never again with Swappa.. I never had any issues with eBay but I was wary about that.. Thank you so much for your reply though. Both of my phone case and sim card coming in now I will have to wait for it tomorrow tomorrow or the weekend, sigh. :crying:
