Many are having problems with receiving only low resolution MMS on T-Mobile, related to using an unlocked phone on their network with a User Agent that wasn't recognized. I found an easy way of receiving better quality MMS without rooting/hacking.
Download Go SMS Pro from the market.
Open Go SMS Pro and go to that app's Settings>Advanced>MMS Settings and change this:
User Agent: NexusOne ( SGH-T989 also works )
Put a check mark by 'Preserve image resolution.'
Next, go to the Go SMS Pro's Settings>Advanced>Important Tips and put a check mark by 'Stock SMS Uninstalled.'
After that, go to the Galaxy Nexus' APN settings (Settings>More...>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names) and make sure they say this:
Name: T-Mobile US
APN: epc.tmobile.com
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: <Not set>
MMS Port: <Not set>
MCC: 310
MNC: 260
Authentication Type: <Not set>
APN Type: <Not set>
Send an MMS to yourself to test it out. After you send a pic, you should then receive two versions, a high-res pic and a lo-res pic. If you successfully receive both the high and lo-res pics, you may now go to the Galaxy Nexus' Settings>Apps>Messaging and disable the stock messaging app. You should now only receive a high res pic when you send yourself an MMS and when others send you an MMS.
I found that you must wait until the very last step to disable the stock messaging app in the GN's settings for this to work. Feel free to give this a try and post here if this works out for you guys.

I'm asking because in another thread about HSPA+ speeds on t-mobile, a guy was saying he thought the speed and latency were throttled for non-tmobile devices. He compared a SGII (tmobile) to a GSM unlocked international Gnex, and the SGII got a lot faster speeds and much lower latency. His theory was that the tmobile branded phones were given some kind of priority.
So I'm wondering if this user agent might be involved (if that guy's theory was right).

Naw, man, those phones have different radios!!! That's exactly why they put the Qualcomm chip in the T-Mo version for faster data speeds.

Please read my new instructions in original post.
I entered about 4 different types of settings i found on this site and others, plus the default settings and nothing works. Ive used 3 different text apps.
I called t-mo and since the phone is not sold by them, the best they can do is give me the defualt APN settings.
It really sucks to have this as a problem but im starting to think about putting this phone on craigslist and going with verizon.

I understand that but the guy's speeds were still well below the 21Mbps that the Gnex is capable of.
Someone on another thread reported success with this. Let me know if this works.

After messing around with it a bit today, I revised my instructions in the original post.
I noticed when first looking at the picture in go SMS it looks super small for me but I would have to long press and save the picture then view it in gallery and it would look normal and high res. I know they're different phones but I've experienced the same issue and I used your fix, seems to be ok now.

Strangely, the initial fix stopped working roughly two days ago.
Keeping the UserAgent set to "Nexus One," confirming the APN settings, ticking the "Stock SMS Uninstalled?" box in Go SMS, and disabling the stock SMS/MMS app completely fixed it.
Note to everyone: MMS appear smaller in Go SMS by default; they are zoomed out. You can zoom in on the image or save it to see the actual dimensions. I can 100% confirm that the zoomed in and saved image resolution is correct and no longer a tiny, pixelated image.

No problem! Yeah, mine stopped working briefly when Go SMS Pro automatically updated to the new version. I had to uninstall that version and go back to the older one I had before. Then it worked again. I also unchecked automatic updates from the market so I wouldn't run into that problem again.
I may have found a fix for MMS Tmobile users..

I do agree on this. I am on simple mobile but I don't use nexusone as UA because it gives me blurry mms. Instead, I use rhodium or mytouch 4g.

These settings work perfect for me on a fresh MDJ CM7 2.6 after changing the user agent thing to "NexusOne"
I have tested sending and receiving and I get full resolution
I guess your mileage may vary, but this was very frustrating for me before, it kept me from using any 2.3 build, and this is just what worked for me

I used both of the things listed combined and it worked and now I am getting clean MMS's now. So use both and it should work just fine!
It worked, but I need to hit the "download" button each time, instead of just downloaded the pic automatically.

You really don't have to get an attitude about this. I know where I posted it. I have already asked on the Incredible 2 forum and the Incredible 2 forum on the CM7 site. I just thought someone could shine some light on the issue or point me to an answer. I have been looking for an answer for over a week so I'm pretty much trying anything at this point.

I've been on T-Mobile prepaid (monthly 4g plan) for quite a while (unlimited calls and text with 100mb 4G data/month) And whenever I get a MMS it always gets resized and becomes smaller and blurry Does anyone know what's causing this? I usually still have a good 50mb left on the 100mb of data by the end of the month so it's not that...

This happened to me on my Nexus One, and even my G1, so for the last three years or so. I've just kind of accepted it - I rarely use MMS, and when I need to get an image in HQ from a friend's phone to mine, I usually just e-mail it. I'd love a solution though.

I read on another thread that it's an issue with an unknown user agent, T-Mobile doesn't know the phone you're using since it's not one of theirs so they limit the picture size (or treats it like a feature phone). I can't seem to figure out how to change user agent for messaging so if anyone has a solution, I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

I think that makes the most sense cuz I saw they found a way around that problem with iPhones... but a fix for this would be amazing living with low res mms kinda sucks :/

Confirmed. This totally works on my GN using Tmobs.
I hope that Google fixes the G+ issue w/ tiny pictures while sharing from the GN and Tmobs fixes this MMS issue. It was easy enough before (N1 had the same issue), since you could just change the user agent in the stock Messaging app; I wonder why Google nixed that feature in ICS?
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on this. Now to customize and get completely acclimated to a new god damned sms/mms app. =[

Also, try check-marking "Preserve image resolution" and playing around with the "Maximum MMS Size" to see if it improves pic quality further. Thanks for the screenshot, man.

No issues on using the screen shots; feel free! I'm really hoping this can help folks out until Tmobs gets this device setup in their system.
Still, though, I'm curious as to why the "Custom User Agent" choice was removed from the stock messaging app in ICS. It seems like a LOT of people were making use of it, so it just seems like an odd feature to omit from a new build.
Also, I'm not 100% positive, but I think "preserve image resolution" might just pertain to sending them out. My reason for thinking this is because (for obvious reasons) it's not like you could expect the app to resize a 250x300 image to 1280x720 and still look even remotely good. Haha. =P
Anyway, thanks again for the heads up on Go SMS and the settings within. I used to use handcent, but the constant force closes w/ MMS on the GN were driving me crazy (in conjunction w/ tiny incoming MMS). Besides that, I use Go Weather anyway, so I'm kind of stoked to support them w/ another app.
Now if only Go Weather would update their "HD" backgrounds to fit the new 720p display of the GN... ;]

Did you disable your stock messaging app and ensure that particular app is not set to auto-retrieve/auto-download MMS?

Well, so far this doesn't seem to be working for me, but the odd thing i noticed was even though I have all the input settings for go sms correct. The settings menu shows the MMS option as red in go sms.
any ideas on what's causing this?

Yeah, I decided to go with an unlocked GN on T-Mo over the Verizon GN when I calculated the money savings over the length of a 2 yr contract.
This is all fine if it works except for one thing, The Messaging app in ICS is REALLY good and I would definitely prefer to use it over anything else.
I unfortunately on T-Mobile am forced to do this
- Use Messaging App
- Send MMS with 3rd party (Go SMS or Whatever) since T-Mobile won't let you send MMS over 1MB and the default app doesn't resize automatically
- Receive MMS though Messaging app and if needed ask them to email higher-res

Send an MMS to yourself to test it out. After you send a pic, you should then receive two versions, a high-res pic and a lo-res pic. If you successfully receive both the high and lo-res pics, you may now go to the Galaxy Nexus' Settings>Apps>Messaging and disable the stock messaging app. You should now only receive a high res pic when you send yourself an MMS and when others send you an MMS.
I found that you must wait until the very last step to disable the stock messaging app in the GN's settings for this to work. Feel free to give this a try and post here if this works out for you guys.
This doesn't work Buddy. I'm guessing at the moment the only working fix would be to either push an apk with the user agent spoofed, or root and change the UA in the messaging prop.
Anyone else have any other ideas?
I've read some posts on here concerning a problem with MMS on tmobile. Is this a widespread issue or a few select people who aren't too familiar with specific APN settings and such? I have the GN in my shopping cart and am ready to buy but this is a huge issue for me as I need MMS to be functional. Can people with the GN on tmobile shed some light on this?

well first off theres a couple issues.
first is MMS not working, the fix for this is just to put in the APN settings and your good to go.
The second and much more serious issue, is getting MMS pictures that are INSANELY small. something like 125pixels. Right now, there are a couple fixes going around, one that forces you to use goSMS, and a couple rom fixes.
but for now those are the only ways to fix it if you have that issue. I do and mike from android revolution rom has said he'll include the fix in his next release, which i really hope he does. i don't rely on MMS that much, but i do need to actually be able to see the messages i get.

Yeah, I presently use the Go SMS fix, which doesn't require root. However, I have already unlocked the bootloader and may be looking to root in the future. Are there any ROMs that allow you to change the User Agent for both the stock MMS app and for the stock web browser? That would be great.

you do need root to do this, but looks like it fixes the issue. and it is the ICS app so it's the same as stock.
I receive MMS just fine on T-Mobile. Is this issue random? Just curious, as I've had no problems so far.

I usaually link but i was on the mobile app and the Mobile app is very limited, and i was able to just install the app without using root explorer

I see. I'm sorry for those of you having the problem. I've had MMS problems in the past (not with this phone) and it was very annoying.
Any idea why some are affected and others aren't? Could it have anything to do w/ the SIM card (i.e., are people having problems using older SIMs)?
I remember reading about this in the HTC Desire section and the general consensus is that this is an issue affecting phones not supplied or T mobile branded. I had the same issue with Orange UK after I debranded my Desire.

Im on T-Mobile and experiencing this problem as well. Im not a fan of rooting or flashing ROMs so I chose the goSMS work around. This seems to only work sometimes as well. Email works also but you have to tell all your friends to email you instead of text which is annoying. Hopefully in the future Android can fix this and also allow group messaging that works with iPhones. Its my biggest gripe about Android.
Is the problem with sending mms, receiving mms, or both? And does it matter which carrier you're sending to or receiving from?

Good question. For me, while I havent tested it a bunch, is usually with receiving picture messages. The carriers they come from don't seem to matter, however, there seem to be issues with receiving iPhone picture messages. So far the goSMS app is the only messaging service that works most of the time. I dont like using goSMS at all but it'll do until a better fix comes about down the road.

Download Go SMS Pro from the market.
Open Go SMS Pro and go to that app's Settings>Advanced>MMS Settings and change this:
User Agent: NexusOne ( SGH-T989 also works )
Put a check mark by 'Preserve image resolution.'
Next, go to the Go SMS Pro's Settings>Advanced>Important Tips and put a check mark by 'Stock SMS Uninstalled.'

I have the same issues on CM 10.1 nightly.
If it's not ROM-dependent, perhaps it's a network issue?
I certainly haven't noticed any problems up here in Canada...
I know this has been discussed in the past, but my phone won't dl group messages, or pictures without a lot of coaxing and after a few attempts at manual downloading.
Same goes for outbound mms.
Someone just point me in the right direction, haven't found the answer with search.

I know this may be a bit obvious, but do you leave Data on? If you don't you won't receive any MMS, only SMS.

Your APN settings are just fine. If you are able to get it to work some of the time it honestly sounds like some kind of network issue to me. Try mms port 8080 as well now that I think about it. It can't hurt.

Try from APN screen press menu and select reset to default. Then try. If working great. If not now try to config the apn and try again.
You could also try doing two seperate apns. For first one enter all settings except MSC ,MMS proxy and port. Enter those in a separate APN and under APN type enter MMS. Save and reboot.

You won't need to put two ports. 8080 is the whole number. It's 4 digits instead of two, there is no comma. That's a more secure mms port anyway. It could work for you. This mostly sounds like network though.

I tried doing all of this to no avail. I ended up going back to CM 10 Stable and it works perfectly. All of my issues including HSPA not working are resolved by downgrading.
