How to change number of search results? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I came from webOS and am search and go addict ("just type" is amazing). I don't use a launcher or really any app shortcuts so when I want to launch something I hit the search button and they start typing.
Problem is the results appear to be limited to show only 2 for each search type (2 contacts, 2 apps, etc).
Does anyone know how to increase this? It is not in settings.

bump. Anybody?
I'm interested in increasing the number of recently accessed results when hitting the search button. It only shows 2 per type.

New Incredible User - some sense weirdness?

Sorry if this has been answered, but I did some searches and couldn't find any answers.
Basically, I just moved from the Droid to the DI, and am loving it so far. Sense has really surpassed my expectations (especially after root) - however, there are some frustrating quirks i've noticed.
The biggest one occurs in web browsing. If I tap the address bar, it only automatically selects the page's url after http:/, meaning that I can't search a term without deleting the http, and then typing in my search phrase. I poked around in settings but couldn't find a preference for selecting all text in the address bar.
Has anyone found a way around this? Thanks!
When you tap the address bar, tap the search (magnifying glass) that will delete everything in the box so you can type your search string.
You can just tap the search from anywhere to bring up the search function...that's not part of the browser.
Thanks for the tip. Small thing, but just part of adjusting to the new phone. Loving it!

It is part of the browser. If you look the searched items in the browser will be different from the searched items when you just press the magnifying glass without being in the browser.

[Q] Dial to extention number

Hello,
I was using RCMix V3.0 A2SD+ which has HTC sense.
I can use this number +886222222222pp357 so it will dial number +886222222222.
And after it connects, it will have 2 pause and then automatically dial extion 357.
Now I'm trying Oxygen V2.0.1.
I cannot find how to type "pp."
I searched on internet and some articles said that ",," is working but I couldn't find how to type ",,".
Could anyone teach me this?
Thank you.
Hi,
This is my first post, so easy on me...
Did you try the Dialer One app? It's on the Android Market. That might solve your problem.
Or
p pause 2 second delay put in comma in place of p ","
w wait for input from user ";"
I don't know what your keyboard looks like, so I don't know how to tell you to enter a comma...
Thank you.
I tried ",," to replace "pp". It really works.
However, I couldn't find how to type ",," in dialer one.
I can only add ",," from Google Contacts.
Could you teach me how to input it in Dialer one?
how to enter comma
I'm using CM7 (Gingerbread).
Note: When in contacts, this is how you would create a new contact or edit an existing contact. When in a dialer app, this is how you would call somebody on the phone, as in dial. Sorry I see that Dialer One is not required to enter a comma. However, it's a nice dialer app instead of the stock android one.
For me in contacts to get a comma I press the symbol key, which is the lower left key, and then a symbol keyboard comes up.
In stock dialer I press the hard menu button.
In dialer one, same, I press the hard menu button.
I'm going to try attach some screen shots.
Thank you cpoxda.
This really solve me issue.
Really appreciate!

Changing Bluetooth keyboard keys

Hello all. I recently got the Bluetooth Motorola Keyboard and I was wondering if anyone would be able to explain how to change any of the hardware keys on the keyboard to open an application. Thanks in advance.
any ideas?/shameless bump
At this time there is no way to change any of the keys. There are people working on this at this time but so far nothing has come out of it. I have the same keyboard but haven't found any need to change anything. What are you trying to do?
I like the keyboard I just wish the messaging button was mapped and be able open the process list (last 5 apps running)
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I hope somebody figures something out with this. (I was just Google searching for something on this, found nothing and figured we'd have something here on the subject.) The messaging button for example, does nothing. If it atleast opened Google Talk that would make things easier. Would make my usual Talk/Browser/Gmail switching much easier when using the keyboard.
And being able to change the contacts key to something else wouldn't be awful either. I don't think I've ever used contacts on my Xoom besides looking at it once and noting a pretty interface. So many other apps would be more useful.
I may be able to help with this. Can someone zip and post up your "/system/usr/keylayout" and "/system/usr/keychars" directories and post them up?
You should not have a /data/usr/keychars and /data/usr/keylayout directories, but give me a copy of those as well if they exist!
Still need those files if you will please good sirs.
I have no idea how to find the files you need. I plugged in my Xoom but I could never get into the system files. I R DUM
here they are
I came across this in the AOSP dev site http://source.android.com/porting/keymaps_keyboard_input.html#androidKeymapKeyLayoutMapTitle
I checked out my system/usr/keylayout/ folder and it shows 3 vendor layout files. i'm guessing those are the moto keyboard.
It looks like it can be done. Although the your xoom would have to be rooted to push a modded file.
looks like someone fixed this!

What about generic bluetooth keyboards? I've seen that many for example use Apple keyboards. I was thinking about getting a generic bt keyboard from eBay and remap the keys. Is there any chance that can be done?

No they didn't fix it. All they did was show how to change what was in the config files for the keyboards and add a WAKE function to an existing button function in order to wake the tablet with the keyboard.
What it looks like is being asked here is how to remap the default application buttons on the motorola keyboard (ie,.. messaging, browser, music, etc). The messaging button does nothing on the Xoom since it can't send text messages and the button was really meant to perform this function on the Atrix. There has also been questions as to how you could remap the browser button to another browser since setting the default browser to something other than the chrome one does nothing.
I've looked over that entire file and not once in there did it show a mapping for those keys to their respective functions. The function buttons have settings there, but I don't know if changing those would have any affect.
Anyone???
in case anyone didn't know, you can press the "search" key + a letter to open up applications. For example, "search" + T opens up Google Talk.

A bit late to reply, but maybe this can help you.
As 'gadgetluva' already mentioned, you can use the "search" key + a letter to launch some applications.
Previous versions of android allowed you to change the assignment of these in the settings. But somehow that option is gone in Honeycomb. The code to do it is still in there, but I didn't find any UI entry to it in the settings.
But, there is a dirty work around if you really want to change them. The application Task Switcher (there are multiple ones, I'm talking about the one from Jason Parekh) can be downloaded for free from the market. It's a nice and useful application, but you can also use it to open the hidden "Quick Launch" settings dialog. You do that by going to the settings of Task Switcher and choose Shortcut. That will open the "Quick Launch" settings dialog. In there you can (re-)assign the "search" key shortcuts at will.
It's a bit involved, but you only have to do this once ...
PS: Once you have Task Switcher installed, you can as well bind it to a key your not using with the free application exsbar. That way you also have a quick shortcut to switch between the running applications. A little bit like the Alt-Tab in windows.

[Q] Dedicated Voice Search Button or "App"

In previous versions of Android I used Google Voice Actions within numerous other apps. I.E. Using a shortcut to start accepting speech actions immediately in Widgetlocker. It seems that in ICS on the Galaxy Nexus there is no dedicated "app" to immediately launch voice action input. There is only the Google Search app which defaults to entering text. I have looked in the Market and couldn't find a 3rd party solution.
Anybody experiencing a similar scenario or have an idea of a workaround?

I share your frustration with this issue. I'm waiting on a solution as well.
Yes, I put in a request for this in the Themes and Apps section.
Soft key support with short press = search and long press = voice search would be ideal.

I'll +1 that suggestion.

[Q] which is the Fastes ROM for calling John Doe?

Hello to everybody.
I'm trying to find out which is the fastest ROM ICS based for doing the following, where fastest means less number of touch on the screen or number of seconds before getting the desired result:
Call John Doe, when you have in the agenda also John Dui, John Ash, John Bone, John Cut and may be some other John as well as some more Doe (Albert, Stefan, Nat).
And then the same for opening the screen into input mode for sending him an SMS.
I used to have also Blackberry (oh yes, nice email reader but not very nice phone/smartphone), but with it, in every point of the user i/f calling John Doe would mean:
press the red button, press J, press space, press D.
I sow different behavior depending ont the ROM on the phone, but before trying all of them, if anyone can post his result it would be very appreciated.
thanks
Luca
Mate, you talking about speed dial or something?
As far as I'm aware there is no speed dial in the stock ICS or Sony dialers. Most if not all custom roms for ARC either use the Sony stock dialer or ICS stock dialer.
There are a few ways however that you can overcome this:
* On the dialer you can select "contacts", long press on someones name and select "add to favorites". Do this for every one you need. Then on the bottom right of the dialer, select "groups" then "star" on the top right. There will be a screen with all the people which you have added to "favorites". When you touch them you have the option of calling or SMS'ing them.
* You can also go to the Google Play Store and search for "speed dial" and download an app to set your friends on the speed dial list or speed dial widget if you want them on your screen. You can then call or SMS. Widgets are probably faster as you can have all people on the screen without opening dialer
* Probably not when your looking for but typing the first few letters of the name of the person on the dialer will bring up their name. You can touch once to call or press and hold the name for the option to send sms.
P.S You seem to have a lot of friends named John
The new ICS has a feature where you can start typing s name and it will narrow it down for you. Or just add them to favorites
@adielee
not speed dial, just a faster and intuitive dialler.
@irononreverse
something like this. May be the right question would be: which is the most intuitive and fast dialler, and feature rich?
I mean, press home button, touch receiver icon, then touch 5 (jkl), touch space, touch 3 (def)
I'm using today boosthd rom, and in the dialpad is not possible to touch "space" (may be I was not able to find the method)
Also in this rom, it is possible to order t9 selection based on name first or number first (by means of the option screen). But it is not possible to show ONLY name or ONLY numbers. This means that the list by touching 2-3 digits is really long.
anyone else have other ideas/solutions/suggestion?
thanks
Luca
I've been using Google Search app/widget for quick contact access on stock ROM, what I do is I limit searchable items in it's settings to just contacts, and when you start typing, it will act just like quick contacts search.
And you can always use voice search command, launch Voice Search and say "Call John Doe"
