Running 2.3.3, rooted, stock ROM. I am having this issue with MULTIPLE versions of WiFi Tether, but currently trying out 3.2 (I think) beta.
Works as expected, but after about 2 minutes or so, tethering stops, and I get the following error:
"What the hell. Your phone takes back control over the Wi-Fi interface."
It's only on screen for like 2 seconds, so I can't reproduce the entire message.
It appears that the phone turns on it's Wifi, which seems to stop wifi Tether. I am having trouble finding this exact issue on the Internet.
well i have no idea how to fix your problem but i do know that you are in the wrong forum. this should be in the Q&A.
Turn off your wifi before you use wireless tether.
Thanks for both responses. I wasn't sure which forum to post this in as I didn't know if it was an issue with the EVO, the Android version, or WiFi Tether.
I have since un-checked "Restart WiFi driver" and also checked another setting that keeps the screen from turning off.
One of those two seems to have done the trick, because WiFi Tether has been running for around 4 hours today. I'm using it with my laptop now.

Forgot to mention, I also wasn't sure about whether or not wiFi was supposed to be running for this thing to work or not. Now I know!
Also, I specifically used the error message in the title because when I searched, I couldn't find anything. Now anyone else experiencing this issue should find this easy - I hope.

Not sure if I mentioned this, but I also run "locale", which I set to turn WiFi on in certain locations around town. I have to remember to turn locale off when using WiFi tether, otherwise it turns on my WiFi and tether gives the error message.

There was a certain version of Wifi tether that worked great and I could tether to other devices even if my phone was connected to Wifi...it worked on my evo and evo shift, it was versions 2.2 or 2.1, I don't remember but whichever version of wifi tether is closest to that is the one that worked fine for me

For me the problem was that I had "Sprint Connections Optimizer" enabled. Once I unchecked that box, I could run wifi tether without any errors!
Setting Location: Settings --> More Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Connections Optimizer --> Sprint Connections Optimizer

I'm down in Mexico on TelMex Infinitum internet service with their really lousy Thomson T585v8 DSL router using WPA2/AES security, on, I think, an n signal (router only runs n on a b/g/n or b/g setting, I have it set to b/g/n). My SGS3 firmware is stock unrooted LJ4.
When the wifi connection isn't strong, or the internet speed isn't fast enough, the WiFi Calling icon turns red and gives me an "09" error code saying I need to register a 911 address before I can use WiFi Calling. When I move back into range with full bars on the WiFi signal, sometimes it corrects itself....but other times I need to reboot my phone. It's a pain in the butt and I do have a (US) 911 address registered.
Not really asking for advice....just wanted to make a post about it so that others can be aware (include T-Mobile) of this pesky problem and post their similar experiences (if they are having them). Give me a "weak signal" error, but an incorrect "911 address missing" error and a failure to automatically reconnect is a problem.
Heads up if you are planning on using WiFi Calling on a weak or slow international connection.
I will say that my WiFi Calling voice/call quality has been amazingly good when WiFi Calling is connected down here.
Tldr trying to help anyway. If there is a 911 error then you need to address something within the T-Mobile website and your login. Google search it.

Already went there a few days ago when I first experienced the problem, re-entered and re-saved 911 address information. No change in behavior.
Didn't have this problem on my old Vibrant which I used down here on same setup (our house) as recently as last May.
Can you call T-Mobile from a landline?

I think maybe you misread my original post.
I have intermittent connection problems with WiFi Calling. I can get it to work, it's just picky and sometimes requires a reboot. I can call 611 via WiFi Calling, but really don't want to bother, as this falls into the "nitpicking" category right now. As long as I can get it to work, get my voicemail, etc., I'm good. No landline here anyway.
I do, however, appreciate your attempts to help.

I am still lumbering on with an old HTC Desire running CM 7.07282011-Nightly and have had no real issues up until a couple of days ago.
Whilst in France (not that that make a lot of difference) the Wi-Fi access stopped working and the phone stopped being able to see any Wi-Fi networks. Basically, it switches itself off after around 30 seconds and cannot pick up any networks. In addiiton, the WiFi MAC address shows as unavailable although teathering via a WiFi hotspot works fine. I was switch between teather and normal Wi-Fi when the problem occurred.
If I go into Settings --> Wireless and Networks -->WiFi setting, then switch on the Wi-Fi, I get the "Turning on" message but then a Sorry warning saying "Application Settings (in process com.andriod.settings is not responding" and I can either "force a close" or "wait". If I wait, the Wi-Fi will simply switches itself off after about 30 seconds.
I did read in another post that this might be to do with the Wi-Fi sleep status but I tried all 3 options (from the menu in the Wi-Fi setting page) but that didn't do anything.
The issue appears to be that that phone has lost the Wi-Fi adaptors MAC address (says unavailable). However, I can still use Wireless Tethering and connect to to the phones WiFi hotspot. I think something has go screwy with the Wi-Fi tethering and Wi-Fi access (as I was switching between both when on my travels), but I need some help in trying to fix it.

Well, after trying pretty much everything, I had to run a factory reset on the phone. Finally, my Wi-Fi is working again. Of course I now have the ball aching job of setting the phone up and re-installing all my apps again. Google restore is pretty rubbish
Looks like there must have been a config setting that got screwed somewhere. I did take a backup of the ROM and if anyone knows where this might be resolved, I wouldn't mind restoring.

I just picked up my T-Mobile LG G3 last night and rooted it.
I am trying to use the tethering app like I did on the Nexus 5 but my other devices are not picking it up when I have it enabled on the new phone.
The app say's its enabled and shows the Name and passcode to join it, but again, no other devices that I was using before (ipad for example) see it when I scan for WiFi networks.
Can anyone please help? I use this app when at work and need to get it figured out and up and running again if possible.

That's the one I was using on my Nexus 5 without any issues. I also just moved over to the Tmo G3 and can't seem to get any of my devices to pick up the SSID either. The developer says that it does work on the G3 and I also followed the settings laid out by the developer in his devices configuration page but still a no go. I emailed him to see if he may have some suggestions but no word yet. Hopefully he replies with something I/we can try to get this running. It was a great app on all my previous phones. I have faith in this developer, he seems to update his apps fairly regularly.

Yes that is the same app I'm using.
I contacted him and he replied back asking Me to send a log file from within the app. I Did that this morning and waiting For further feedback. If I hear anything I Will report back here.

I had the SAME problem with the app with my G3 and I've been back and forth with him via email. I had to try a few methods he gave me but the last one finally did the trick!
Here's his email that had the steps to get it to work below:

It works now, because the settings on his site and his emails weren't working, but the above finally did it for me.
But I noticed the the DNS process, /system/bin/dnsmasq, was using on average 40% of my CPU constantly with the app enabled. So I checked the "Use Internal DHCP" in the DHCP settings and the process ended and the CPU use returned to normal.
I had asked in a reply if this app uses IP Tables to mask the hotspot use as mobile use or still shows up as Hotspot with T-Mobile. I wasn't sure if enabling or disabling the Internal DHCP would negate it or not, but he hasn't responded back yet.
Does anyone know if this app does mask it as mobile and not hotspot?
I just came off of Sprint to T-Mobile two days ago and I always used the native hotspot function on my rooted Note 3 that masked it as mobile use.
Hope it works for you guys as well.

Darn, I wish it was working for me. I found that on Fabio's page and used those settings but they're still not working for me. Also tried to use the internal DHCP option but still no dice. I just sent Fabio my log file, hopefully he finds something that can get me up and running.

I can confirm the above settings including the internal DHCP work perfect on my end also!
As a side note, it also appears that the data usage shows up on my T-Mo account as regular "Internet Access", not Hot Spot usage. Maybe I was looking at it wrong, or maybe my account hasn't fully updated yet, but it looks promising.

Good to know it works. I tried it a few days ago and I didn't get any data, so I uninstalled it. Now that you guys confirm it's working, I might buy it.
I've been trying to get the stock tether to work. Found where to change the APN so that it doesn't use the pcweb one that tracks as hotspot, but I'm running into other issues, some other checks that need to be circumvented. This app is probably using the fast APN since pcweb is only listed deeply in the frameworks-res.apk of the G3 and those should never be used unless this app tries to tether as DUN (which I doubt).
Question, does this app have Tasker integration?

It would be unchecked, as listed in my post above in regards to the settings and tweaks to get it to work with D851 G3.
Also, been using it for days now and it does mask the tether use as mobile data and NOT as Hotspot data, as orbitalcomp confirmed, even using the internal DHCP server (which I was wondering if it would with the IP Table masking).
As for Tasker integration, I'm not sure what you mean havanahjoe with Tasker, as in the normal App Tasker or an app titled tasker?
I also noticed that my data connection just dies every so often, both on my G3 and my wife's G3. It show a connection with LTE and the data arrow up lit, but no data is moving. I've read several reports of this on XDA too on Tmo G3's. This is either with the tether app or not, Tmo's data connection just stops working and needs to disconnect and reconnect to the tower/antenna to work again.
Finally, when using the widget for this tether app, when first tapping it (after a reboot or so), it does not enable it. You have to wait a little and then tap it again for it to enable. Once you get it to enable and become active, turning it on or off via the widget works on the first tap. It's just the first initial widget use upon a reboot that it takes two taps, about 5 secs apart to actually start up.

Thanks for the update and confirmation of mobile vs. Hotspot..which meets my own experience. FWIW, your settings quote from Fabio simply says "No Firmware Reload" and doesn't state checked or unchecked...which is why I asked. At least I can't see it on Tapatalk. [emoji4]

The hiding of the traffic is all about the APN. WiFi Tether Router uses the phone APN (fast.t-mobile.com) and the built-in hotspot uses pcweb.tmobile.com. That's why it's so easy to bypass, as long as WiFi Tether Router can do its thing by doing some iptables, dnsmasq and other Linux magic.
I have seen my LTE connection stop working from time to time. Not while tethering, but I rarely tether for more than 30 minutes at a time. Whenever I lose data, I just do the same, airplane mode on/off and it's back.
Tasker is an automation app. It's great for getting things done automatically. I use tethering in the car so that my dash mounted Nexus 7 can get internet. With Tasker, my hotspot is automatically turned on when I get in the car, and automatically turned off when I turn the car off. There is a method for applications to talk to each other in Android, these messages are called intents. With intents you can tell an app to shut down, to load a specific playlist (Spotify for example), or to enable/disable something. When using the stock Tether app, the system lets you toggle it with intents that Tasker already knows about. WiFi Tether Router has no intents, so there is no way to externally tell it to turn the hotspot on or off. The workaround is to emulate touching the enable/disable button (on the app or the widget). It's kludgy, but it works. It would be much cleaner and reliable if the dev enabled this functionality.
I tried the setting you suggested on the other thread, and by using Internal DHCP and not having WiFi Tether Router use DNSMasq to provide DHCP and DNS services, my battery drain is much more acceptable. I only lost 3% on my drive to work. I usually would lose 10% or more! This setting might be needed for other carriers where you do need to hide your data, but we don't have to worry about this with T-Mo.

Thanks for that explanation on Tasker, when I mentioned it to my wife last night, she said she was already using it on her old HTC One M7, so much for me being ahead of the curve. Or on the curve even, I guess. :cyclops:
I have noticed when using the Wifi Tether App, sometimes my laptop won't or can't connect to the hotspot after a while using it. I use it for extended periods of time at work, hours on end even, and my laptop will just disconnect from my SSID and won't connect, despite it being live. The SSID is seen and the laptop tries to connect but then just says it cannot do so.
I need to reboot my laptop for it to connect to it again. I'm not sure if it's the IP lease on my laptop expired or wasn't renewed with the tether app. Unfortunately, I cannot perform an IP renew or release in CMD on my laptop, because it's disconnected and needs a connection to do it! So I can't narrow the error to that function or not.
When I use the native Hotspot with TMo, I didn't have this problem last week when I was using it for three days before getting the Tether app.
Just some experience with it so far, in case anyone else was seeing the same or so.

This app is broken in g2/g3 lollipop. It will also break built in tmo hotspot app as well and you would have to factory reset to get it working again. I switch back to kitkat just to use this app and also see no benefit in lollipop.. yet..

I can't get any of my computers to show the network name for WiFi tether router. I've never had this issue until today. My wife's phones doesn't have a problem, but mine won't show at all
I just switched to unlimited data on my LG G3 and got this app...
It works great with the G3 settings shown on the first page of this thread and on the app website. The speeds are the same on the device as on a client device so that's good...very fast LTE.
I originally tried setting the APN to LP4 (from default LP6) as the application directions stated must be done for T-Mobile but found that the network slowed (4G instead of LTE) and became somewhat unreliable. I'm wondering if this is even necessary on the G3 based on what I'm reading here. I switched the APN back to default.
My plan includes 5GB of tethering with unlimited on board so the problem is that how can I tell which data I'm using? My account page only shows unlimited it doesn't show how much of that is used for tethering even when I used the native tether app. I suppose I just have to try and go over and see what happens?
I've got this working on Cloudy 2.5 but the data is being counted as Hotspot data. Other than the settings earlier in the thread is there anything else I need to change so that it doesn't get counted as Hot Spot data?

This morning I decided to do the lollipop update, everything seemed to go well and im pretty sure my wifi calling was working after I did the update, now later on this afternoon I cant get it to connect its showing a wifi calling symbol on my notification bar with a slash through it and keeps telling me Wifi Calling connection error, anyone have any idea how to fix this? Thanks!!
Yep, I'm getting the same thing today. It happened the other day and I restarted my phone and it resolved itself. Today a restart hasn't fixed it. No idea why it's not working. Nothing has changed with my phone's software. Doesn't make any sense.

I didn't try WiFi calling since the update last week, and sure enough, I had the same issue. I even went as far as doing packet captures on my network to see what the issue was. I found a few "fixes" on the Sprint forums but none worked. So, I have two SSID's at my house, one is 2.4Ghz and one is 5Ghz (a new access point) I always connect to the 5ghz here at the house (but I don't use wifi calling at my house). So, for the heck of it, I switched my connection to the 2.4Ghz and turned on Wifi calling and BAM! It worked(I had previously used wifi calling on this network when I was testing it out when I first got my phone last year)! I switched back to the 5Ghz, didn't work. What I did to get it working: While I switched back to the 2.4ghz AP, i went into SETTINGS-WIFI CALLING, pressed and held on the 5Ghz network and tapped "remove", then re-added that SSID to wifi calling and now it works.
Please note I also have "Wi-fi Range Alert" and "Update address Notification" selected in Wi-Fi Calling settings (three dots on the upper right hand) and it did ask me to update my address information (and I saved the information). Not sure if this is critical, but I can only say this fixed the issue I had. Also note that I had previously tried:
1) Clearing the cache from APPLICATION MANAGER-ALL-> WFC SETTINGS and WI-FI CALLING
2) Dialing ##72786#
I can't say for sure doing the above two things actually did anything to help.
Earlier I tried reprovisioning my phone and it didn't fix it, also tried other things, so decided to give sprint a phone call a little bit ago and they had me go through the provision process again but they were refreshing it on they're end and it fixed the issue, hope the same works for you!!
Edit: Maybe that's what I didn't do was clear the cache before provision, I did it after wards!

Please note I also have "Wi-fi Range Alert" and "Update address Notification" selected in Wi-Fi Calling settings (three dots on the upper right hand) and it did ask me to update my address information (and I saved the information). Not sure if this is critical, but I can only say this fixed the issue I had. Also note that I had previously tried:
1) Clearing the cache from APPLICATION MANAGER-ALL-> WFC SETTINGS and WI-FI CALLING
2) Dialing ##72786#
I can't say for sure doing the above two things actually did anything to help.

It was fixed, now its doing it again, I bet its this sweet modem that im renting from Comcast, what a joke of a company
Having the same issue sperradically. Literally just before clicking on this thread I went to my phone and it had the symbol with the exclamation mark, pulled it down said "Connection Erro..." tapped on it, made a 'boop' sound then nothing) which is what I had since I got home around 5:30 today... and by the time Ifinished reading these posts, it went back to "WiFi Calling is Ready"
today I wonder if they were doing maintenence or something since a lot of ppl had the problem, (for me I first turned it on day-before-yesterday and it worked great till today though I might just have been lucky) I tried turning it off and on, I tried forcing stop and restarting, re-setting my location, etc and I still got the same error till just now, so... yeah... Sprint WiFi Calling seems flakey... (I have a skype in/out account I've been using for calls since I dont get decent reception and was hoping to replace it with this, but...)
Same here, decided to update this morning and WIFI calling is dead Jim. Tried reprovisioning after a cache clear, no change. Still dead, which sucks because I depend on it due to my in house signal being so poor.
Anyone have any other ideas?
If your desperate you can do what I did to solve my lack-of-reception...
Set up Skype
Add a skype-in number (~$4/month iirc)
Add skype out subscription (~$4/month iirc)
Activate "Google Voice Integration" on your sprint account
Add the skype-in number to google voice
turn off voice to the sprint mobile device (inside google voice)
Now when people call your number it gets routed through google-voice to skype, which will ring on your phone like normal. (just dont plan on getting a Gear because so far I've found NO way to accept/place skype calls using the gear)
Follow up that has fixed my issue with WFC after the 5.01 update on my Note 4.
Contacted Sprint via Chat.
updated Profile and PRL under system update in settings.
Pulled the battery for 30 sec and restarted. Turned on location and updated E911 settings and I'm back up and going.
Update:
For the last two days I've had no issues with wifi calling except when I went to town (where I dont need it anyway) it even reconnected and worked when I got back home. Dont know if it was a fluke or I've just been lucky, but it seems to have stabilized for me (at least for now) will report back it if acts up again.
UPDATE 2:
welp, looks like I jinxed myself. not been able to use wifi calling all day now...
Noticed a pattern though, last time it did this was when it rained, I wonder if wifi calling requires the GPS to be connected so rain kills it. (or it might be a coincidence, just something to think about)

Don't rent modems from the cable company. Usually its a cheap piece of crap. For what they charge you to rent the modem you can buy one on anazin/newegg and it'll pay for itself in less then a year
