An odd problem - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a Desire Z, but the battery seems to go down too fast, even when not in use. Same thing when the phone is off also.
I get around 5-7 hours of the phone being on with about 15mins use and the battery is dead.
When the phone is off, I get about 8 hours.
I know its not the battery as I've tried a few. Ive also tried a few ROMs aswel as stock ROMs.
Any ideas on how I could fix this?
Thanks

Every time you flash a new ROM you're wiping the battery stats and it takes the OS a few days to re-learn your battery. Wipe the stats manually and give it a few days.

Yea but how long do you wait before you end up reflashing or wiping again?

Around 3 days.

Have you checked to make sure you don't have some sort of errant app that's causing your battery to run down?

x2 this happens a lot especially going from ROM to ROM. The built in function works ok, but I generally use Android booster to narrow down errant specific apps even built in Android apps like sync. It helped me go from 15 or so hours to 24+ especially if you use autostarts and TB to freeze or prevent from startup

3 ish days is probably not enough for Android to learn the battery levels properly. It takes a few charge cycles to get the values right. I wouldn't have thought its good to wipe battery stats constantly.
With the Touch Pro 2, you could force a learn by discharging it completely until it doesn't power on the firmware any more, pull the battery for a minute, charge overnight while powered off, pull the battery again for a minute then power on. This updates the values in the firmware too.
I have read it works with the Desire Z too, and I've tried it after a ROM flash just to wipe. Obviously, while you can still get into recovery, wipe battery stats prior to this.
Disclaimer: Do this once only, its very bad for Li-ion batteries to repeat this. Do this at your own risk.
If that don't work:
If it does it in airplane mode then its probably an app.
Make sure you flash something like a rooted stock ROM and make doubly sure you wipe everything before first boot. Data / Cache / Dalvic cache etc.
If you haven't installed any apps and it still does it, RMA the phone for repair / replacement.
Hope that helps!
Craig

Thanks for all the help above. Will try for a few more
Days.
Though the battery even dies when the phone is off.

Well, Ive still got the same problem. Ive realised aswel, when the battery dies and I go to charge it up the orange led flashes for around 5-10 minutes and then turns a solid orange.
Same thing happens with a replacement battery.
Im guessing its probably a hardware fault

I've had the orange led flashing before after a completely flat battery. Its probably something to do with a dangerously low voltage from the battery. Its extremely bad for Li batteries to get very low..

Have no idea. Must be sg wrong with the HW, get it to a service station or ask for replacement where you have bought it. Mine goes for days. (bought in Austria, factory unlocked, Android 2.3.3)

[HOW TO] Calibrate Desire Battery

Found this on another forum, I have done this a few times myself (do it whenever i flash a new rom because i always clear battery stats, can't hurt). Have found that it does top it up a fair bit. Before doing this i find my desire will drop to +-93% straight off the charger, however this keeps it 100% longer and i actually get to see the numbers 99-94%
Worth a go in my opinion because it only takes 5 mins of your time and can't hurt the phone... So any minor gain from this process is a win...
Hi *******, I understand your concern regarding battery life on your Nexus One device. The following steps should significantly extend the battery life on your phone. Please connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green, indicating the device is fully charged. Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off. Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on. Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and use it. You need to use this sequence only once. If the issue of battery life on our phone persists, I recommend you contact our HTC accessory department directly.
Mod Edit: There have been a few reports of damaged batteries by people on this thread. There is a chance that this MAY damage your battery. Please bear this in mind if you choose to follow the instructions above.
supportyou and the app!

Also wondering about this
You should wipe battery stats after its fully green (when powered off) then boot the phone back up.
You only need to do this once
I.e.
Charge till full when powered on
power off
charge till full again
boot into recovery wipe stats
boot and continue to use as normal
It works!!!
That's fantastic!
I read this topic this morning and tried immediately. Since this morning i only lost 4% until now. That's great news!
Thx a lot, man!

Hope this will make battery life better. I have the same problem as described in first post (drops immediatly from 99% down to 93% )
Can someone suggest me how should I go about doing this if I use multiple batteries?
I'd imagine the phone can only be calibrated to 1 battery. But if I were to use another battery, would I screw up the calibration to the original batteries?
Right now as it is with moderate usage I need 3 batteries to last me through the day. :S

3 batteries?!
What rom are you using and how exactly are you using your phone?
I have just one battery and it lasts about 2 days with moderate use.
I am using this ROM: (sorry can't post link)
[ROM] Rooted Official HTC Android 2.2 (FroYo) ROM [Market issue fixed]
With my typical usage, I unplugged the phone in the morning from the charger, by the time I knock off from work, I would have left about may be 20%. With stock ROM and a single battery, there is no way that I could last 2 days with one single charge. My main use is web browsing, RSS, Facebook and IM. My estimation of my solid screen time is about 2-3 hours.
So I bought more battery just in case, and played with custom ROMs. I ended up using up a whole battery in 4 hours or so. Definitely something is wrong here. My gut feel is that both the ROM and batteries are suspects. Being a newbie I really need enlightenment.
Is it really needed to wipe the stats? I think I've accidently done this once already... cause the battery life is much better.
since this procedure, my battery stays at 100% since nearly 2 and a half hours now and i did 2 text messeges in between and recently checked the bat about 4 times
this couldnt be possible..
i mean the battery is almost doubled in comparison to how long it lasts before
is this possible??

i mean in this time the battery would have been dropped to arround 97

Creepy battery drain: 100 to 0 in 1 hour!

Hey people. I am having the wiriest problem. So, i get a refurb evo, and it seems to be running great, so I root it. I flash myns 4, and then the ziggy kernel meant for that rom. I also flash a couple of the visual mods. Then, all of a sudden, i start having incredible battery drain. I am dropping more than 1 percent a minute! There is obviously something wrong here. I have data and 4g on, but controlled by ultimate juice. Other than that, nothing. I really want to be able to use my phone again, and this is pretty debilitating. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
Btw, my battery info has android systems and cell standby at the highest, even though I have had my phone mostly on idle. This is not normal, or even wird. This is plain old creepy. Where is all that power going? And more importantly, is it possibly causing permanent damage?
I don't suppose you flashed the rom with a full battery did you?
you have to have a full battery when you flash roms.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sounds to me you got a crap refurbished phone. That kind of drain shouldn't happen under any circumstances.
Wow quick replys. I think I flashed the rom with pretty low battery. Could this be the problem? Can I just recharge to full and then wipe battery stats? Is it even truly full? I agree with the possibility of a crap refurb. My meter said 56 like 20 minutes ago. Now I have 4. Not good.

I would definitely try charging then wiping battery stats first, but the battery drain issue could be the reason it was refurbished in the first place.
Just what I was thinking. The only problem is, how will I fill up the battery all the way? I know the kernel puts charging in a loop after a certain point, so isn't it impossible to go past my present 100 percent? Confusing stuff. Will send email to sprint and htc asking about it.
Ok before you flashed this ROM did you do a full wipe(cache, and Dalvik)? Even before you flashed did you make a nandbackup? Was the phone getting hot?
What I would do is if you have a nandbackup then do a factory reset/wipe cache, then wipe Dalvik then flash your old ROM. See if the probelm goes away. If it does then either the ROM you flashed, or the other stuff you installed fouled up something in the phone.

turn the phone off then charge it til the light turns green. then unplug it and plug it back in. then wait til it turns green again. do that a few times to make sure it is full. then wipe your battery stats. then wait til your battery dies and the phone turns off. then while it's still off charge it til the light turns green. turn it back on and you're good to go. it takes a while but it's totally worth it

Jdog I have tried unplug and replug (not with wiping, I will try that) and charge for 8hours, unplug, turn off, charge for 1, unplug, turn on, wait 2 minutes, turn off, charge for snot her hour, both without success. I will do the wiping thing though. Kmf i did wipe well with Amon and make a backup. Will try a fresh rom install, wipe, restore, and even an unroot if I have to. Any more suggestions?
you gotta wipe battery stats. that's the important part

Battery no longer holding charge

Having a strange charging issue with my phone.
I let my phone charge over night and when I took it off this morning it was at 100%. When I checked it about 15 minutes later it was all the way down to 21%. Is it possible that my battery has gone bad? I can't imagine an app causing that much drain.
Just in case it matters, I am running CM10. I also recently replaced the USB port on my phone because it had become worn and loose. I don't think the issue is with that because the phone recognizes that AC charger and will charge it.
Sounds like a bad battery to me. Does your battery show any signs of swelling?

No way this could be rom related right?
Not that much. I have installed many different roms on many different phones and never got results like that.

Hmm the plot thickens...
I just charged my phone at work to 100% using a different charger and unplugged it. Its been almost two hours and I have only lost 6%.
Is it possible its the particular charger or could a failing battery cause inconsistent results like this?
Does your phone get really hot on that charger at home. If so it could be a bad charger. Also I have had times when my phone would get a false battery reading. It showed a 98% charge but when I looked in recovery it showed around a 40% charge. When I rebooted it was showing what recovery showed. That actually sound like what happened.
Is this the first time something like this has happened.
Sent from my HTC Incredible 2 using xda premium
Sounds like you got yerself a case of gremlins
I actually noticed it happening once or twice before but it was at the same time that my charger port was acting all wonky so I just assumed that there wasn't a good connection being made and it had drained on its own.
I'll have to do some more experimentation when I get home. If not I'll have to look for the wipe gremlins option in clockwork

LMAO sounds good. Have you tried wiping battery stats? Maybe something just went wonky.
Wiped battery stats and removed an app that I suspected was draining the battery. Seems to be better now. Thanks!
Apparently I spoke too soon. Battery life on my phone remains inconsistent. Symptoms are as follows:
1. Phone will charge to 100% but lose 50% of battery life within 20 minutes of being taken off the charger OR
2. Phone will appear to be charging (lightning bolt in battery symbol, battery stats states it is charging on AC) but the actual battery reading will remain static or even decrease OR
3. Phone will charge but at an extremely slow rate
Here are the fixes I've tried so far:
1. Wiped Battery Stats
2. Replaced charger port
3. Tried different chargers
4. Tried different wall outlets
5. Purchased new battery
6. Factory wiped phone and installed new rom
Searching google shows that this is not a unique problem to the Incredible 2. However, the culprit is usually a loose charger port which I have already replaced. I am at a complete loss, does anyone have any other ideas??

I literally just had the same problem although I didn't buy a new battery but it was when I was flashing cm10.. I tihink it might be rom related. Literally everything u just said happened to me I was trying different chargers and everything as well...I finally pulled the battery for like 20 minutes then restored a back up of miui gb and the wiped cache, battery stats, and dalvik....then I was back in action...hopefully u figure it out hope everything works out on your phone!

[Q] Rapid Battery Loss & Rebooting Restores Battery?

So, my battery is wack... and I think it's only been acting like this since I went to a KK ROM? Maybe? Feels like it...
I've had this tablet since it was released last fall, and this behavior is very recent.
Anyways, it dies FAST. Like nose dives in a matter of 5-15 minutes. What's even weirder, is that sometimes, if I power cycle the device, it'll jump up by 30-60%. But then just dies again in another 5-15 minutes.
And there's a screenshot after I just power-cycled.
It jumped from 11% to 71%!!
Crazy!
I've also tried letting it get to 5% then charging it to 100%, done that twice. No luck. I don't know if this is related, but if I power it completely off, and plug it in, it turns on... kinda weird. My Note 3 doesn't do that, it just stays off and shows the battery charge indicator.

Hi, I have similar problem and I am with 4.3 android. I have battery loss when I play games. It drops to 2-3% really fast and after reboot it goes up to 35-40%. Once I fully depleted my battery and charge it. This time there were no battery lost. After the second charging problem persists.
If you manage to fixed it please tell us how.

I have a similar problem with my p600. the tablet is new, got it since a month or less.
at first i was amazed of the battery life i use it a lot for work writing documents and sheets on excel, battery used to perfom quite well giving me more than 5 hours of screen on, but recently the battery starts to drop very fast, now i can barely get around 2 hours of screen on.
i've already done 2 cycles of full discharge and then charge it completely with the tablet turned off. but the problem stills.
also sometimes when i reboot the tablet the battery goes from i.e 20% to 40% after the reboot.
im still looking for a fix or solution, today i found a new official firmware for my model (4.4 firmware for telcel mexico). going to wait until the tablet is fully charged and then flash the new firmware. I dont know if its going to help but i got nothing to lose.
by the way, sending it to semsung is not an option because of knox 0x1

Sorry to bump this, has anyone found a solution yet.
I've replaced the battery 3 times in about 9 months, but had this issue about a yr, was sent back to Samsung who changed the battery and supposedly updated the fw 4.4.2, I have since replaced the battery another 3 times every 3 months, each time either factory resetting or flashing a new rom, currently on official Smp600 5.1.1 BTU rom, today my battery was on 47%, I plugged in charger and was watching/streaming a movie on it, about 80 minutes later the tablet shut off, which was odd it's never powered off while on charge, powered it back on and battery said 19%, my previous issues has been the same as others, it can be on 100%, play a game, or stream a movie,or watch youtube etc and it will nosedive dramatically 20/30% at a time, sometimes within 10 mins it's gone from 100% to less than 30%, it's clear there's some sort of issue if others have it, I was wondering if a thread should be made to list ppl with this issue to see how many there are and go from there.

I've been having the same issue for some time now. Calibrating the battery does help, I don't experience the problem nearly as much after calibrating it. advice on abnormal battery drain

I will start out by saying I have ALMOST tried every trick or hack or mod software related to attempt and resolve this issue.
I will let the screenshots speak for themselves.
I am starting to think there is something physically wrong with this device which is odd because when I opened it up to take the plastic cover off to expose the boards I found no evidence of any liquid intrusion at all.
Only one of the pictures is from a different charge cycle maybe a day or two after the others.
To be specific I am trying to eliminate deep sleep battery drain as much as possible. my htc one x does not drain anywhere near what this galaxy s3 does even though everything is disabled. I've tried different rom / kernel / settings / screen / leds / sync / etc.
Wondering if someone might notice something I've missed here.
thanks!

Wondering if someone might notice something I've missed here.
thanks!

It could be app updates. There was an update to Google drive just a couple days ago and that night after I updated it my battery died overnight when it was nearly fully charged. I cleared the app cache and data and the phone is back to normal. I've seen this happen with a few app updates lately.
Hope this helps.
It could be, and quite possibly is something like what jack man said above. But it could also have to do with the battery itself getting old. Many of these devices have been running for over 2 years now, and the batteries do go bad.
If you really think its a hardware issue though, the only way to know for sure is to flash stock firmware via Odin, factory reset with stock recovery (wipes ALL your apos and data), then test it out over a couple of full cycles without restoring any old data. If you are running anything custom, or restoring backup data, you have way to many "unknowns" to make a call on whether or not it has anything to do with hardware.
BBS is great, but unless you use and post its logs (including kernel wakelocks), it won't really tell you much more than you already know and the logs are much more helpful to us than screenshots.
Mine started doing that a couple weeks ago, for like two days the battery drained like crazy even though it was deep sleeping fine with no wake locks, 16% loss per hour ... I replaced the usb cable I was using to charge it, as it was going bad to where you couldn't touch the phone without hearing the connect/disconnect sounds cycling rapidly, bought a ventev 2.1 amp charger to replace the 0.8 I was using, and did a battery recalibration, now all is well, draining less than 1% per hour with screen off, averaging 1.5% during the day with occasional usage. And that's with the stock battery that's been in it for 18mos.

brand new OEM battery from amazon.com - I got the phone stock w/ original battery and noticed the drain issue, first thing I did was order a new battery and flashed CM11 to see what would happen.
drain exists all across the board with this one.
I've also tried different chargers and cables, and even the charging dock on my radio.
what re-calibration method did you use?
I let it run dead till it shut itself off, charged to full while powered off, booted back up and wiped the batterystats.bin, then let it drain all the way again before going back to normal charging cycles.

What is the date on the new oem battery? There are still places with "new" batteries that were actually manufactured 2 years ago. Leaving them shelved for that long they can still go bad. Probably not the caes but figured id mention it anyway.
I will check on that date. I bought an oem samsung charger from bestbuy last night to do a full charge with the phone off. I let it drain down to about 40% from idling and light usage. I've read of people getting better life after using an official charger after several charge cycles.
Ive heard that too. Definitely worth a try, though Ive always thought what matters is the output be the same, but I could be wrong. Never really looked into it.
While trying the new charger for a few cycles you should also set BBS to start monitoring and logging your wakelocks. (Dont forget to tell it to include kernel wakelocks)
This way if you are still having problems youll already have the logs we would end up asking for anyway.
will it save the logs if the phone auto shuts off due to low battery?
I think it should
looks like the logs reset because I have to plug in the phone to get it to boot back up.
either way, the new samsung brand charger doesn't make a bit of difference in terms of battery life, but it does charge the phone a hell of a lot faster haha!
I even did an advance wipe in twrp so I was left with just recovery and download mode so I sideloaded yesterday's CM11 nightly and left it bare with no gapps. also flashed BMS kernel through sideload.
turned everything off (location/wifi) put in airplane mode, and still loosing about 8% an hour with no suspicious wakelocks or "alarms".
what is the difference between the two?

I'm having the same issue.. Pain in the ass.
I've factory reset, clear cache then flashed with Odin the stock 4.4.2 firmwares for Bell, Rogers and Telus, all have the same drain. When I add my google account I get Google play service keep awake issues.
Phone doesn't last 1/2 a day. From 100% it drops about 10%/hour when in airplane mode and 15%/hour is play service is enabled.
I'm blown away by this. The battery isn't the issue, I pulled it and swapped with a known good s3, the drain did not occur on the other s3.
I'd love to get this resolved.. If I can't, on to ebay it goes.
Yeah I'm with you on the eBay thing. At&t maxes trade in at 55 bucks in mint condition. I have to recoup the cost of this new battery from amazon !

Can you get logs of this situation? In your previous case you had an apparent problem with Google Play Services where it would wake your phone up to 32 times per hour. That said, if you still get battery drain like that, after full wipe w/o anything waking your phone up or any wakelock then something is definitely wrong with either your battery or your device.

No BBS = no troubleshooting. From your screenshots one can see you have something keeping your phone awake, but we can't guess what it is.

BetterBatteryStats. It's pretty much the number 1 tool to diagnose battery issues.
