SOLVED[Q]Wifi continuously scans even though connected - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on Legendary 2.1 and just had it pointed out and I verified that even though my wifi is connected to my router it continuously scans every few seconds. This has got to be a battery drain. Is there a way to turn off the scanner when connected or set it for every 5 minutes instead? Thanks.
Edit: Thanks TeamERA for explaining that it only does that while in the listing window so it can update the list immediately. It defaults to the scan interval in build.prop when that window is closed. Thank you.

I think romtoolbox allows you to change that Im not sure but you can check it out.

Sorry root tools by jrummy allows you to change wifi scan intervals

I'm pretty sure you should be able to turn off 'network notification' while connected...this should stop scans since this option is made to notify when a network is available. In theory, if its not notifying you if new networks are available, I would assume it's not scanning. Good luck

No It still scans even after disabling the notification

I tried SleeperROM and it does it there too. Can someone look into making the scanner manual only?

That would be awesome cuz you have to figure that's a lil bit of a battery drain.

I found a program called wifi buddy on the Android market. This program allows you to disable wifi scanning.

I will try that...thank you! Probably add hours onto my battery life on weekends at home with wifi on.

Wifi buddy settings only control that app not the system settings so disabling wifi scanning only worked inside app not to system wifi scanning

I'm not knowledgable enough yet, but has anyone looked into using SQ Editor? Perhaps something can be manipulated in system files to just disable intermittent scanning all together? Only initial scan when wifi is activated? Just an idea...

That's what I was hoping for. Can't seem to get a DEVs attention to look into this. Build prop edit doesn't do anything.

Trying to find any sort of process or folders in root explorer that relate to wifi/scanning and coming up empty...I'm with you Kenny, we need a dev to pick this up, especially if editing build prop showed no results

I think my phone is doing this too.
In betterbatterystats mmc_delayed_work (under kernel wakelocks) accounts for 90% of my wakelocks, this does not happen on 3G so it is definitely related to Wifi.
I thought it had something to do with my router (DIR-655) as other people said they experienced unusual drain with that router.. Not so sure now.

This is probably the main reason people are complaining about their battery life on the gingerbread builds. I think it is more of a EI22 issue. How did EH17 or the previous gingerbread Roms handle this and if it handled this issue better can we take something from to fix our problem.

It would be nice to actually have the system manipulated, however, I am pretty sure that Juice Defender has an option of wifi control...I think (and I don't fully remember, just went to Thunderhawk and haven't put it back, trying to figure out other ways to better battery, as is everyone else) that you can allow JD to stop all wifi unless user selected.

So I don't claim to be a dev, but I just thought of something that might lead you in the right direction. I remember a post about lowering the signal threshold on your phone to get better 4g connectivity a couple of months ago in the general section. Its a dialer code and you need your msl to gain access. This is one of the phone settings like at the bios level. When I did this, I was able to see a boatload of settings that you would not find anywhere in the os settings. If you know where I am talking about and know the dial code to get in there, I do remember seeing some wifi stuff. Maybe something in there you can change scan or retry rates, with signal thresholds that might work for you. Write down all changes you make if u need to go back.
Again, just a thought trying to help.

That's a good idea. I will check that out when I get a chance.

GPS turning on randomly even when its switched off from notification bar?

Has anyone had this problem? I've read a few threads here about GPS but I didn't see anyone with the same issue as me.. Never had a GPS issue since I bought the phone it worked fine and locked in seconds when it was new. My problem came to be after I Odin back to stock ek02 using the one click package. I also used the autoroot method to root but I never noticed it happening then. Ive tried factoryresetting from the menu and both ek 02 odin and eg30 odin then ota and still GPS broken...

Actually now that I think about it I'm going out on a limb here and guessing the ek02 hotspot hack is the culprit seeing that every time I run it on 4g is when it happens a lot and that's when it wants to act retarded until I reboot. Is there a way to remove the hotspot hack without doing an Odin reset to test out my theory?

Should be able to remove it from your system/app folder using a root browser.
I didn't think the hotspot hack worked with 4g, only 3g. Hmm..

It works fine with 4g I always use it on 4g. But I think its the reason my GPS keeps acting up. Here's the link it even tells you it has 4g been using it for like a week now lol..

That won't fix the problem that OP is having. Search for what was mentioned, there is something coded by default that causes WiFi to basically get choked down to almost nothing when the phone is sleeping. It stays on, but the speeds go to ****.

Thank you for contributing instead of just condescending.
My first response is always the obvious fix, especially when something simple like streaming music over wifi is cited... You'd be surprised how many problems are fixed like that.
However I still haven't experienced that problem, but the OP wasn't specific enough to start eliminating possibilities and jump to a bug as the reason

I am also having this issue, Verizon GN.
Reading that linked thread a little earlier, it does seem to indicate that the new setting "WIFI PERFORMANCE FULL/HIGH" is not properly modified by apps, be they winamp or tune in (the two I have tried).
As a result, I too was getting drop outs at the time my device went to sleep. Most often the radio would pick up again after 10 seconds and continue to operate normally, but sometimes there would just be CONSTANT buffering/drop outs - noticed this more with tune in radio (tried various stations).
I am trying out the 'wifi high performance' app also linked earlier. Knock on wood, it seems to helping so far. I do have a question about it, the app (1x1) square just pulls up a screen with a checkbox for the wireless network correct? There is also a widget (2x2) which doesnt seem to ever show up on your home/main screens even though you manually put it there however many times.
Seems like the widget is not working, when pinging im getting atrocious times and still getting the drop offs... thought it might have been fixed but now trying in tune app and having constant issues.
Is there any solution? This means I cant stream radio over wifi ever??? WTH
ive never experienced this. ive downloaded roms while its asleep. radio streaming no problem. im on the sprint gnex....
Guys, see this topic and thread about the widget not staying on the screen, and about the size issue.

Lol thanks but no the answer I'm looking for is more like a edit in the system files that control wifi. Not sure what or where they are though but I think someone will come along and help me lol.

Rom Toolbox Pro has an option to increase the scan interval. Maybe email the developer and see if he can add an option to completely disable it? He's a very active developer.

Fool me once...with JB remember to disable Con Optimizer

FYI, for the 3rd update in a row Sprint enables Connection Optimizer by default. It is a HUGE battery drainer in the past, and maybe even more so in the JB release. Remember to go into..
Settings --> More Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Connections Optimizer
and uncheck.

But does it stick as disabled when you disable it? I had that problem in LI3 and I ended up freezing it with Titanium Backup.
You have to go to /system/app and delete or rename Connection Manager.apk.
Even if you disable it. It will be turned on again.
That's the Sprint "don't use your unlimited data"
That sh** is all day long scanning for Wi-Fi.

It is causing hell on my phone today. Keeps flipping out and flapping my WiFi connection. Just checked it in Better Battery Stats...yep, this is the third worst offender behind screen and media services. And Sprint pushed out a buggy update that won't let people turn it off...
With this and their incredibly stupid removal of Internet Calling, I can see LJ7 being pulled or a fast update being pushed out ASAP.

Sprint Connections Optimizer

First off, a thousand apologies if there is already a post or thread regarding my issue. I could not find it.
After using ROM toolbox pro to uninstall sprint connections optimiser my WiFi still turns on pretty frequently by itself. Is there some other app I need to freeze or uninstall to keep this from happening?
I've looked in WiFi settings for an option to disable "notify me when networks are available" but couldn't find that.
