When this morning when I unplugged my phone from my USB charger, the "lightning bold" charging icon stayed on. Reboot, still stays. Any ideas?
Edit: After battery pull, same problem. Also, immediately after boot, it flickers back and forth between the charging/not charging battery icons. Again, this is with NO charger connected. WTF.
Edit 2: Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkGrcumdyEg (sorry the 360p version is upside down, please watch the 480p version).

Bump, anyone have any ideas?
Every time the icon turns on, it wakes my phone up and turns the screen on. It's really killing my battery. This is bad :/
was it just this morning? every morning? what happens if you plug a different cable in? a car charger or something? If it still persists after all that, I'd say take it back.

This happens when it's not plugged in.
I ordered from UK, not sure how "just take it back" works in this situation
ok it sounded like it started this morning AFTER you unplugged it. Thats why I suggested plugging it into another cord and see if that changes anything.

Yeah, it started this morning, but I've plugged it in and unplugged it and tried everything a thousand times since then. I've factory reset, I flashed stock images with fastboot, etc.
I've made a video of the problem and I'll post the link after it finishes uploading.
I've added a video to the OP.
wow so the whole screen does that too not just the tiny battery icon on the top bar? It's blurry what the charging screen says. I don't know what to tell you and you said you'd done battery pulls. maybe leave the batt out a half hour see what happens?

Yes, the phone is behaving as if a charging cable is being plugged in and then removed, over and over and over.
Basically you have 2 simple options:
1) Do a factory reset wiping the whole phone
2) exchange it for a new one
If 1 doesn't work, then your problem is hardware related which means you should just exchange it - even if it is a PITA sending it back to the UK.
edit: looks like you may have already tried factory resetting it as it looks like the initial setup screen is popping up in your video. If that's the case, I'd return if for either a new one, or deal with the RMA process...
Yup, did a factory reset, re-flashed stock images, nada.
Currently, I just finished charging the phone to 100% while powered off, then removed the battery, and I'm letting it sit for a while. I'll pop it back in in a few and see what happens.
What a pain.
Well that didn't work either. Now the charging icon and "USB connected" indicators just stay on all the time.
I can only assume this is a faulty USB female port. Any DIY tricks? Or should I just send it back to England and wait it out?

Maybe it's got some metal bits shorting out some contacts in the port or something. Other then blowing out the usb port on it with some compressed air, I wouldn't do much else.
I thought I would try one more time to erase everything and flash stock images from Google.
When I do this:
Code:
fastboot erase data
I get this;
Code:
erasing 'data'... FAILED (remote: Unknown Partition)
Also if I try to format /data in ClockworkMod recovery, I get:
Error... Could not mount /data.

Hey guys,
I've had my GN for about a week now with absolutely no problems until tonight. I went to bed with my phone plugged up into the charger thru the wall and when I woke up it was still at 73%
Tried unplugging and plugging back it but the phone won't even detect that the charger is even plugged in. So I tried plugging it up to my computer and it still won't detect anything. The charger is still in perfect condition and I tried plugging into the car charger, but it will slowly charge.
you know when you plug in your usb cord to a computer or charger....that little icon on the top left pops up with the usb icon on the top left
well..i tried plugging in my phone to charge thru the outlet but it won't detect it so i took it out and tried to plug it thru the computer..but my cpu won't detect anything either
also
You know how when you plug it up to your computer and you hear that chime indicating that your has recognized it as a media dive. Well, my computer won't even pick it up / recognize it anymore
I've rooted this phone, but I've done nothing else with the phone. I rooted it last week, but did't have problems until last nite. It was charging just fine when I went to bed, but woke up and it just stopped charging
Just an obvious question so forgive me if you've already tried this. Have you done a battery pull to fully reset things and see if that helps? If it's a h/w problem it won't have any impact and probably means an exchange is in order.

Yeah I'm doing that right now. I completely took out the battery and put it back it back in with no luck
I've been using the extended battery. SO i took that one out and replaced it with the stock battery and still no luck

Weird; I currently have the phone plugged into my computer....it seems to charge just fine ONLY if I have it faced DOWN
Would that mean it is a cable issue?
try pushing the cable upwards to see if it makes contact...i had a problem with my usb cable and had to change it.

you can always unroot the phone if you need to send it in. I would slightly jiggle the cable when charging, maybe its a loose charge port on the device itself.
Have you had a good look inside the phone's USB plug and the USB cable plug? There might be something stuck up inside one of them. If so, you can clean it up with 99% alcohol, or contact cleaner by dabbing some on a soft toothbrush and scrubbing it out. Phone off, battery out of course.

You press the tip bristles up inside the usb connector and flick downward, avoiding other areas. And the brush doesn't need to be drenched. Alcohol won't phase it unless you spill it all over the device, the alcohol quickly evaporates...considering alcohol comes in a plastic bottle.
i had this problem with my stock phone.. turned off phone and it would charge... i let it go to 100 and did battery pull and worked fine ever since

man, spoke to soon..... been a while since it happend , but now its happening again...
charging while phone is off seems to do the trick....
what is also wierd is that i plugged it in while the phone was off for about 5 mins and turned on the phone.... it went from 12% battery to 45%
I've just been charging it faced down. Where is the cheapest place I can buy a whole new charger?
So, I woke up this morning and I went to go check some messages on my phone, but when I checked, the phone wouldn't turn on. I charged it like I usually did and when I got to it, the blue led light was flashing. Not brightly, but just like it would try to turn on, but it can't so the light slowly fades away. I tried to hold the power + volume buttons (both up and down) but it still wouldn't do anything. Any help before I take it into sprint?

Get a brand new quality USB cable. A HUGE amount of issues can be resolved by just doint this, believe me.
I was using the charger cable it came with but connected to my computer
well your computer USB port can only push 500mA out max. sounds like its undercharging your phone. the stock charger pushes 1000mA or 1A.
Hi Guys,
Before I start, I have read many threads (I think all) relating to this problem and I have googled, googled and googled.
My Device:
GSM Galaxy Nexus
Problem:
It won't charge. No matter if turned on or off. The battery stays always at 0% and when taking a look at *#*#4636#*#* it says "charging".
What I have tried:
- Bought three different batteries.
- Tried two different cables, incl. the OEM one.
- Tried two different wall chargers.
- Replaced the Micro USB port.
- Wiped, reset etc. the phone.
- Tried different ROMs and Kernels. (Yes, I am desperate).
Any advice what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance!

They look all the same. Not bent, not damaged, not dirty.
hmmm that is really all I can think of..
The fact that it says charging leads me to believe it isn't the port (like most people experience)

I have plugged my phone into my computer. It says "not charging" now. This message appears after a few minutes when I turn it on. Same happens when I plug it into the wall.
Now it's getting really strange. I didn't observe this behavior before.
Before I changed the Micro USB port, the message was >always< "not charging".
Now, after the change, it says for 2 minutes "charging" and then it changes to "not charging".
Did you replace the whole USB board as well, or just the port? It sounds like the USB board is bad.

Hi lowandbehold,
No, I replaced the whole board if we mean the same. I can't post links at this time because I am a new member of XDA, but you can search for "Dock Connector Charging Port with Flex Cable For Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250" on eBay.
UPDATE: Plugged it back into the wall. It says "charging AC" now and does NOT change to "not charging". Funnily enough, the voltage keeps dropping. From 2040 mV to 1961 mV in two minutes.
i'd say replace the device.
Unfortunately I'm having the exact same problem. I just replaced charging port literally just now and it still won't charge. It says "Charging" but it's not charging. In the Settings it says discharging.
Could it be the battery? I'm thinking of buying a new one and seeing if that works.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? with mine it charged fine in the beginning, and then it would only charge to about 86%, and then 84%...then 80%...currently it will only charge to 14%. I can leave it plugged in for 48 hours and it says it is charging but will not go past 14%. it takes a few hours for it to charge from 0% to 14%, but then dies within 30 minutes of EXTREMELY LIGHT use.
I've tried two different batteries which both yield the same results. I have en external battery charger and can charge the battery to full (according to the light on the charger) and place it in the phone and the phone will tell me it is at 14% or 8% or something like that (which makes me believe it has nothing to do with the usb port).
I have explored everything I could think of on the software side. The problem started on Ice Cream Sandwhich, it didn't stop when it was updated to Jelly Bean, I recently rooted it and have tried a few different roms including stock roms and CM10. I tried battery calibration apps.
So far nothing has made a difference. Any Ideas?
Nope no solution has been found. I'm just selling the device (and telling them the problem, so far I'm selling it for $275 and people want it) and I'm going to buy an SIII or a One X
well, this really sucks...it seems that a few unlucky people (like me) have this charing issue...
I too changed my USB flex cable thinking that this was the cause, but nothing changed
the battery icon says charging, but the system says discharging
what a major p*** off, cuz I'm fed up of changing batteries all the time, I have 5 batteries
I hope that someone will be able to figure this one out, cuz its a real brain buster
Any update on this? My phone bought in July is also just started giving this problem. When it is on it simply will not charge. All these months I was using another charger with no issues. I have tried the following:
1. Using the stock charger
2. Bending upwards the male connector in the USB socket.
3. Removing the battery overnight
Nothing seems to work. When off, the phone seems to charge somewhat and charging icon comes on. But charging when off for about 5 hours resulted in battery showing about 50% (from 13%) but it drains very quickly. Sometimes when charging for 30 minutes (when off) and switching it on it shows 100% battery, but then still discharges very quickly. Sometimes it shows very low battery.
Also my notification LED is glowing red since about a month, even when phone is switched off. If I remove the battery and connect the charger, the LED starts glowing red - blinking, so it seems the USB port is providing power as sometimes the battery does show 50% and seems to last a bit from there.
What are my options here? I am on the latest JB OTA update which came around 14/15 Nov. In India, I will get no service from Samsung for the Nexus.
I am going to try a factory reset first and then next see if I can get another battery. And maybe I should return / cancel the Nexus 4 I ordered?
Maybe try wiping battery stats in recovery? I was having similar issues today with "not charging". I was plugged in to the wall with nothing, so I plugged into the computer... ADB enabled and device was connected as a media device. I booted recovery and wiped dalvick and battery stats, rebooted and now it is charging via usb and AC. Don't know what happened, but it worked for me. Hope it helps!
Thanks for the response. Well, I just tried draining out the battery (it took almost 2 days lol) till it would show shutdown warning soon after booting up and then removed the battery and held down the power button. I then charged it in 'off' mode for a few hours, I think overnight. I used the actual Nexus charger instead of the generic one I was using all this while. When I turned it on, there was about 40% charge showing.
There was another JB update which I managed to complete (leaving it on the charger). The phone seemed to work fine, but did not show a charging state, but suddenly the next day on its own when I just plugged in the charger, it showed the 'bolt' charging icon and since then it has been working perfectly.
Simply no clue as to how and why it started working fine. Probably the previous 14 Nov update had some bug which was resolved in the latest update or the latest update reset the battery stats or whatever.
I am more worried about my upcoming Nexus 4 which has a non-removable battery as to what I would do if something like this happens.

I doubt it's bricked. Will it start up into the bootloader?
Again, try pulling the battery for a few minutes. Then put everything back together but wait until you have access to a true USB charger, not a USB port on a computer. I've noticed with a few phones in the past (GNex included) that sometimes when I had a bad crash and the phone went unresponsive, that trying to get a hint of life while using a USB port didn't work as well as a charger. You'll probably have to leave it plugged in for a little bit, but after 15-30 minutes you should once again at least get the white battery charging icon to display front-and-center if you give the power button a single push. At that point, try booting into fastboot, then recovery and clean things up a bit before rebooting into android (Wipe Caches, Fix Permissions).
If not, seriously, do everything again, and wait with it charging overnight. I had a similar issue with my Nexus 10 after doing my first unroot and flashing on it. It took nearly an hour, but then I finally got the charging icon (in that case though, a battery pull wasn't feasible).

Yeah i tried all of that since 1 pm yesterday, that's when it just died on me. I have left the phone charging for over an hour and still don't get any sign of life, not even the white battery charging icon. Left the phone charging overnight, that didn't work also. I tried the OMAP fix but that also failed, it isn't recognized by my laptop.
That's a bummer. Once I had an Epic 4G that I also thought was bricked but the "leave it charge overnight" method worked even though the charging led wasn't on at all. I'm surprised that I now have seen an actual thread with a truly bricked device, not the usual "my phone is going into boot loops its bricked!" thread. Sorry to hear it man.
This may be irrelevant to you, but mine is on verizon and was having charging problems. I went into one of their stores and they had a replacement on the way in under 15 minutes of me coming in. Great service from them if that's who you're with carrier-wise.

Well that sucks Guess, it's time to call Samsung
So here's the story.
It was last night. It was dark, and I proceeded to charge my phone. I didn't see where I was plugging in the adapter into the wall, so instead of having both adapters in the correct sockets, I had the right prong of the adapter into the left hole of the power bar socket, and the left prong of the adapter into nothing.
Of course, being dark, I didn't see, but it went in so I thought I plugged it in properly.
So my phone is "charging", and I proceeded to flash a new ROM (Android Overdrive). My battery at that time was at around 30%. So I went to recovery, did the regular full factory reset, and flashed it, and when it rebooted, it had the 4-coloured X boot animation playing, when I heard a funny, continuous, low electronic humming sound eminating from my phone and the screen started getting funky and turned a shade of purple. I quickly unplugged the usb, and proceeded to restart the phone.
Phone freezes at boot animation.
I went into bootloader, and successfully navigated to recovery. I proceeded to do a full wipe, and reflash the old rom.
It flashed successfully but I had the same problem of getting stuck on the bootanimation.
Now the phone won't turn on when I press the power button. When I plug it into the wall it shows the charging icon thing, then it turns off, then it turns back on, and repeats like that forever.
When I press the power button when it's plugged in the phone gets stuck at the charging battery screen (The screen freezes).
Also, when I plug my phone into my computer, my computer (windows 7) makes a disconnect sound, followed by three short beeps in quick succession that are at the same pitch as the last note of the two-note disconnect melody. It does this on repeat forever.
PS: I just managed to put the phone into bootloader mode and I am leaving it plugged in. I am going to see if it is still responsive after 30 minutes of just sitting there on the homepage of bootloader mode.
PPS: It was stable after 30 mins; I could still press up and down and select whatever i want. BUT as soon as I unplugged the USB, the device shut off. Is it the battery problem?
Does anyone know yet what's wrong with my phone?
A friend of mine had a similar problem... Never solved it, keep us updated mate...
Sounds like a battery problem. You might wanna get a replacement battery if you can. Word of advice. Never ever flash anything if your phone isn't fully charged or at a good battery percentage. Personal experience
