[Q] Is it possible to get >20h with a non-SBC kernel?

Now, I do use my phone pretty heavily. My girlfriend and I text back and forth about every 2-5 minutes, all day, which will surely rape some of my battery. In addition to that, I do things like surf the internet, market, Gmail, no music, rarely games.
Is there any kernel, or ROM/kernel combination that has users getting >20 hours on a full charge with heavy usage? I always see people getting it with what they claim as "moderate" usage or they'll post screens and their phone is like 40% idle, 40% standby, which is silly.
Just wondering.

It is...on CM7...with Tiamat kernel...19 hrs at 55% left, 3.3.5, non-sbc. ; moderate usage.
With heavy usage, I had around 18hrs @ 35% left.

I knew CM7 had far superior battery life to Sense ROMs, but only tried SZ with it, not Tiamat. Guess I'll give it a go for a few days and see what happens!
That whole some users experiencing dead SD cards issue kind of worries me, but nothing a new SD card can't fix! Ha.
I see some people sticking with RC2 instead of going up to RC4. I know thgre's a changelog I can check, but is there a particular reason some people are sticking with an earlier release other than that they might not necessarily need the new things added in a later RC? Does RC2 have more stability or something?

CM7 final is out, and tiamat is FTW.

Some people are just clinging to it, and don't like change, or they're content with what it offers. Use the CM7 final that was released, along with the Tiamat kernel, you'll be good to go.

This was the best I have ever seen my phone do. I didn't use it heavy, just somewhat moderate. Typically with this same combo I will burn through a whole battery in less than 8hrs at work. Of course I am streaming Pandora/Slacker or on PowerAmp alot. But this screenshot was on Myn's Warm Z Nightly with kernel netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nohavs-nosbc-suv-universal-signed. Set Cpu running 1036max/38400min OnDemand and a screen off profile of 652max/245min. The only things autosyncing are Google acct, HTC sense and everything else is manual on my phone.
Of course being in a strong signal/service area is key. At work my signal is weak at best and we have no wifi . This particular stretch of time I was at home for a bit (ok signal) and my in laws (strong signal) working on their car for 5-6hrs. I Then of course let it sit unplugged all night. But I did a lil web browsing, searching, games and otherwise calls and texts. I was pleasantly surprised. If I was in a good service area at all times I'm sure I could run my phone 10-12hrs on heavy use.

I don't see the point in spending some money on an extended when I'm just gonna go get the EVO 3D when it releases. I'll just spend my time trying to find the best combination for me.

try calibrating.
full charge...after light turns green check with battery monitor widget
then clear battery stats, unplug
use the **** out of it till it hits the redzone
plug back in full charge again *checking charge*
see how it lasts...

Ih they're using the same battery and there bit expensive anyway...

I would highly recommend setcpu. I do the same thing as you, mainly use my phone for a lot of texting, and maybe 20 mins of internet a day. I have my setcpu set to 384mhz when the screen is off. This alone saves a TON of battery during the day, and doesnt affect any apps or anything else. I also have step down profiles, so if the battery gets under 60%, it throttles down to around 700mhz, at 40% it throttles down to 500 mhz, etc.
I am currently on cm7, and I can easily go a day and a half without a charge. But when I was on Myn's rom, I could go almost 3 full days.

Are we sure the battery is the same size? Another forum said the pics showed a square shaped battery. I know it's supposed to be more mah than current evo battery. But maybe they are confirmed to be the same size and I just missed that info.

Why not use something like gvnotifier to send/receive texts using your google voice number. The program runs in the task tray area of windows and integrates very nicely with google voice.

The only issue is texts you send will not be stored on your phone. Both however are available via the website at google.com/voice .
Most of my texts conversations are relatively unimportant, so saving is not vital.

Funnily enough, just the next charge, I got 23 hours on Warm 2.2. Moderate usage, though, not heavy usage.

GVoice has always had such a terrible wakelock for me. Like, the wakelock was the amount of time since it had started the process!!!

I use an SBC kernel, but I didn't for awhile. Here's what I did:
1. Turn off mobile data when you're not using it. Background data takes up a lot of battery.
2. Turn down the screen brightness.
3. Keep screen off as much as possible. My best, with SBC, battery test is nearly two days and my screen-on time is only like 7 hours. Use it for what you need it for then turn the screen off. Display is one of the biggest battery users.
4. Don't use haptic feedback or vibrate. It takes more battery than making noise. Since you're a heavy texter, like myself, this won't seem like it's helping, but it is.
5. Get a kernel that undervolts. That user up there who said use SetCPU to underclock when your phone display is off is basically doing what kernels that has undervolt does manually. Undervolting does it automatically.
6. In my personal experience: CFS > BFS. I'm not sure why, I'm not a kernel specialist, but I use what works best for my phone (0004 Hardware).
If I were to give you a suggestion, it'd be Netarchy 4.3.4 CFS-Mor-Havs-NoSBC. It's in beta but I've been using the SBC version for a month now and it seems to be the best bet for Sense users. I don't know AOSP at all, so I'm unhelpful if you use that.

Post Your Battery Stats for Those Who Use Their Phone...

So every time I read a battery thread and someone mentions how well a ROM is on battery the pictures posted always show that the user is barely using his phone. They show a picture of their phone that shows it being unplugged for over a day and everyone gets excited and thinks their phone will last over 24 hours on a particular ROM or setup. Then when they do not see the same results they can't figure out why.
The answer is, as long as your device has no apps or bugs keeping it wake, if you don't use it, it will last. My EVO 4G could last 24 hours if I didn't touch it. The thing is once you started to use it it wasn't long before it was over!
So I would like to see pictures of battery life from people that actually use their phone so we can see what Roms truly are the best and what battery tweaks really do work. I am not interested on what Rom sleeps the best. I use my phone and don't need it to sleep for 2 days. If you cannot get to a charger within a 24 hour period, you have something else going on that you might need to address, lol.
Please post what Rom you are running and anything that might be installed that would effect battery life for good or bad.
I am running my phone stock. It has never been rooted. Below you will see after 12h/44m unplugged my battery is down to 26% with 4.5 hours on screen time. I was on wi-fi the entire time and also have an Airave in my house so signal did not play an issue with this stat.
I keep my phone on auto brightness, GPS is always on (doesn't effect battery like people think, only uses it when it needs to) and have my weather, news, and Twitter apps syncing every 3 hours. I have no battery hacks or software running. I also use ADW Launcher EX as my launcher. I know some launchers are better then others with battery and it doesn't seem like ADW drains much at all.
I look forward to screenshots and setups from other people so we can truly see what setup, Roms, and tweaks work best for battery from people who truly use their phone.....

On a typical day I get about 12-14 hours from 100 to 0 battery charge.

my battery is garbage compared to you guys. i get about 8hrs on average with very light use. i still can't figure out why my awake time is through the roof. i have 2 gmail accounts set to push and 2 other email accounts set to pull once a day and fb & twitter set to sync every 4hrs. battery life is similar whether i'm at work with horrible in building reception or at home connected to wifi & an airave. i've learned to deal with plugging for a lil bit every so often throughout the day, but was expecting to get over 12hrs considering the way i use my phone. at first i thought i maybe received a bad phone, but it was the same after replacing the phone.

It looks like your phone barely sleeps. It's awake most if the time. Seems like you need a replacement phone or try a different kernel.

Agreed, your awake time should match your on screen time or at last be close to it. Something is killing your battery. Check out better battery stats which you can download from xda to find your wakelock.

The paid version has a monitoring feature you would need which is not included in the free version. I do not believe you can find the problem with the free version. Check out the app I recommended above, betterbatterystats.

no, not at all. i guess i really need to figure out what is causing my awake time & wifi statistic to not be on par with my screen on statistic. i've had my phone for just over 3 weeks now and learned to sort of deal with it, but after reading a few more threads about it, i'm concerned again.
This is what i currently have syncing:
2 gmail accounts - set to push
2 pop3 accounts - set to pull once a day
1 google calendar account - auto sync unchecked
facebook - 4hr refresh interval w/ notifications active
twitter - 4hr sync interval
and all native google apps that may sync in the background

This is what I got:

Here's mine. I didn't use my phone as much today as I usually do. But screen was at max brightness when I was using it and WiFi was only connected while I was at home. It was on but off except when searching for open signal otherwise. I'm using calkulins new Rom and haven't changed anything except that I'm running a live wallpaper and have all the sns crap and drm crap frozen

to the OP, the 12hrs with 4.5 hours of display on time is great
i can get 12hrs, but probably with 2-3 hours max of screen time
got 9 hours today with calcukin

looks like your wifi was on instead of 4G?
4g radio is biggest hog, cant believe you have 4g on all the time and got 12 hours out of it
and it shows 3% accounts for calls,unless for "load of" you mean texts and games

You guys are also forgetting about screen brightness and also signal. If you are in a low signal area you will get less life.
I just had to plug mine in at 3%. I lasted about 14hrs on what I consider moderate use.

Was at school using 3g with heavy Web surfing for two hours.phone went to 50 percent with low brightness lol. My phone can last from 6 hours to 24 hours depending on usage.
If I don't touch my phone often with everything of and 3g on once abbrev a while it can last around a day

I call bull****!
One has 20hrs with around 50% bat left and the other has 11hrs with around 90% bat left.

Battery Life - screen on time & battery conditioning

Firstly let me say I'm a long time lurker of XDA, I don't often post but rather keep quiet in the shadows. I've owned many handsets (Including the Inc. and TB, meaning I know bad battery life) and this has always been the site I go to for hacking and general information.
I don't expect definite, for-sure answers. I'm just seeking some advice on this, I absolutely love this phone and a Nexus on Verizon has always been my dream.
Secondly, I'm not posting here asking why my screen uses over 50% of the depletion on my charges, it is supposed to, I know that. I see many threads asking about that, which is why I waited to post not wanting to ask what has been already. But I am asking about my case specifically, and want input.
The main thing here is the amount of screen on time I am able to get.
I have had my GNex since Saturday afternoon, when I bought it the battery was dead and I fully charged it, the first day I used it mostly while plugged into AC, using 4G to install my apps. Since then (the last two days) I have tried depleting the charge almost entirely before charging, shying away from charging mid-depletion. I have tried using CDMA mostly (my area has just marginally good 4G), hoping I could stop some of the bleeding, but to no avail. I should also say I yesterday for the first time threw a custom ROM/Kernel on and that seemed to help marginally, though in truth I don't see that really changing the screen power consumption.
Please take a good look at both screenshots, as said I care nothing about the %.
(I am aware there is still 13% remaining on my charge, but even so this seems just crazy)
In the first screenshot at the bottom it's apparent this isn't a huge amount of screen on time.
I would kill to get 4 hours of screen on time with this thing, heck even in the area of 3, but it doesn't seem to be in the foreseeable future as it looks now. I can get out 2 at most to this point, and that is on almost entirely 3G/WiFi with light/moderate data usage.
I really need to ask. Do I just need patience to let this battery break in? I hear some say this can be a week-long thing, but shouldn't I see some increase by now?
If not, do I seek out a replacement battery or could this be an actual defect of the AMOLED drawing more than it should?

There were quite a lot of awake time during screen off if I look your stat.
Thats your problem.
Too much sync?
Mine can get up to 3 hours and 45 minutes screen on time, span into 2 days stand by, gsm version.

Good point, looking into playing with sync in settings and JD.
But while that accounts for the drop during the 10hr overnight period (20% of battery/83% of time), I still feel the draw during screen on (80% of battery/17% of time) is just insane, even given the AMOLED.

Maybe its a rogue app running in the background making the battery drain real fast. Try wiping and running the phone normally without restoring your apps and see if that will improve. I'm having the same problem as you but with the GSM version. I'm looking through my apps though.

Here are some of the usual suspects:
- Facebook for Android app (uninstall it and replace it with Friendcaster and change the frequency of update t less often will do the trick)
- Accuweather widget or any other weather widgets
- Whatsapp
- Viber
- Latitude (google maps) - Login to Latitude and then ensure you select the option where it does not report your location and then sign out of Latitude.

Honestly, I have the GSM version and I've rarely gotten over 3 hours screen time. It's the screen. The battery life sucks, so you'll have to just ABC (always be charging), at the desk/sofa/car.
What I really want to ask is how you got the battery percentage inside the battery icon?!

I guess it's just the price to pay for such a gorgeous screen.

The custom ROM I'm running had it as the default icon: AXI0M 2.3.

What is your total screen on time during those charges?
The only app in that list I really have to check is latitude. Doing so now.

I think op should stop playing wind up knight in his sleep. Case closed. Just kidding. But seriously, probably got something using up cpu cycles when using phone and not using it. If i dont play any games, i easily get 4 hours screen time, and got 5.25 over the weekend.

When I flashed this ROM I purposely left games out when setting it back up, the only one is Drop7 which I purposely make sure gets killed when I'm done. All apps which sync I have either at minimal amounts or off entirely.

Are you in north america? Try ugkk7 radio maybe? I am in the usa and xxkk6 was ok, but since i flashed ugkk7 reception is excellent. Oh wait. Youre cdma version. I dont know if the same applies. I do know radios designated UGxx# are north american.

you could install CPU SPY to see if your device is going in deepsleep, I had a problem that one app was using most of the time 350mhz and was using my battery very fast.
after that i found the app with battery monitor and disabled the app to see if the problem was solved, and that was the case, and i have now a battery life from more then a day instead of 5 hours.

I can get 3.5 hours of screen on time spread over ~36 hours or so on the GSM version.. if LTE is on I would assume around two hours of screen on time was normal for a Verizon version just because of how LTE is but it did look like your CPU was awake a lot as well so also it could be a rogue app, not necessarily a game.

Will give that a try. Like mentioned though almost none of that time was 4G enabled. (Maybe 10mins of that first green section.) The slope is just as steep.
In truth this was a fairly data-light charge.
Could it be the rogue app would actually sap battery only when the screen is on? Even though there is wake time where there shouldn't, that isn't the main area of drain.

My battery life on CM10 has been terrible. I have barely anything running, i've even installed this custom kernel to combat battery life

Ditch lean kernel. Do you have Chrome installed? It has an undocumented feature. It does unspeakable things to your battery. There seems to be at least a little incompetence going on in Chrome's code.

There's nothing wrong with Lean Kernel. It's running very well for me.

I apologize if I have offended you in some way. But anyone with any experience with troubleshooting will tell you that a problem is easier to pin down when you eliminate all unnecessary variables. And since I've read about and personally experienced anomalies with lean kernel, I suggested it first.

I do have chrome, i guess ill use firefox

I don't have Chrome nor any custom kernel. I agree, cm10 battery life leaves much to be desired, even with juice defender installed. I hope it improves w/future builds. Battery on cm9, on the other hand, was awesome.

Hmm, Im using CM10 nightlies AND lean kernel, and my phone seems to last well beyond my expectations.

No problems for me. I get 4-5 hours of screen time and 16-18 hours overall.

What version of CM10 are you running? I'm giving it sometime, but just flashed CM10 M1 last night, and am wondering if a change from cyanogenmod's kernel may help with battery. Got about 6 hours of lite-moderate use today on my I747

What things are you running in the background (NFC, GPS, vibration, haptic feedback, etc.)? I'm running CM10 9/15 nightly with ktoonsez's kernel with a 1.9Ghz overclock and my phone lasts from 8 in the morning to 1 in the morning. Today my screen's been on for just over 4 hours.
Another thing to check for is are you located somewhere where you consistently get good signal? If your phone is constantly reacquiring 3G or 4G or constantly searching for signal it's going to cause a severe drain on your battery.

I'm using SmartassV2 with SIO. I know I'm old school with SmartassV2, but comeon the name alone is worth whatever marginal performance increase I could get with some of the newer governors.

Well I notice that when I'm on screen, my battery drains like nuts. I slept 8 hours and I went from 100% to 88% which isn't bad at all, however if I'm texting or w/e, checking the web (keep in mind everything is off, I'm not a retard, and my brightness is at maximum low), battery eats like nuts. Is there a kernel or specific rom I should install?

This kernel? It says that if you install it, and you want to go back to stock, you need to reinstall the drivers. Wtf does that even mean? Where the hell would you even find the drivers. Sounds too high risk lol

I am running the latest CM10 build and my battery life is terrible as well. Wednesday night I was about 75% charger before bed and when I woke up, less than 7 hours later, my phone was off with no juice. I tested it again last night with about 85% left and it was dead again this morning. I have the same app installed that I had installed on stock and did not have these issues. I absolutely know and understand this things differ from person to person and settings to settings, but I am not sure my settings are that different from when I was on stock. I fairly enjoy the ROM, so I am just dealing with it.

Well, I've charged my phone to 100 last night, wiped battery stats (still on lean kernel), and i put my phone to sleep, and it drained only 8% which is very good (7 hours of standby). Now where my battery drains like a **** is during on screen time. I've put brightness all the way down to low, but I see people who get 20 hours with 5 hours of screen time. I could only wish to get such battery life lol. I wanna try that k747 kernel but I'm scared about losing my original USB and and **** drivers and I have no idea how I would go about restoring them if I no longer like the kernel lol.

CM10 battery life isn't that great. There was one nightly build that had outstanding battery life, but I can't remember which one it was.

If you both read his OP all you have to do to get the original drivers back is Reflash your ROM that has those drivers. It isn't a huge deal also to the guy going 80%-0 overnight, you have an app eating processes in the back destroying your battery.

I've got to break the well spoken rule about battery life threads.

After long being one of those people who would never post a thread with bias questions or answers.
It's come to this.
I long for the battery I had from ICS, I never got less than 4 hours screen on and 16 hours standby together.
The best I got was right at 5 hours screen on with 18 hours standby.
All with wifi/3G only, very little to none 4G, it's fine with me.

Every single ROM/Kernel combination since I've moved to JB has provided me with just......crap......
AOKP, AOKP kangs, CM, Liquid, CNA, and Eclipse along in different combinations with
Faux, Lean, stock, 007, TinyKernel, and Trinity kernels.
It does not matter what combination I use.
I can barely get over 3 hours-ish screen on time with about 12-18 hours standby.
Now if I use the screen less than 2 hours, I can get up to two days standby, which is nice but not the overall complete usefulness I had.
I know battery has long been an issue for many of us, but I see people in threads talking about their 2 hours of screen on time like it's amazing when it's awful, especially when some of us, could, and used to get close to 5 with stock batteries or 2100 extended (mine)
If you're using LTE all the time, only 2 hours screen on is justified because it should be common knowledge what happens.
Point of the thread is this, I want to know, those on JB with stock or 2100mAh battery and can manage 4+ hours screen on and still close to a day of screen on, what's your secret? Every detail, spill them.
Is it our fault or are we just in a down time of battery efficiency in the ROMs and kernels?

There is no secret, jb is crap when compared to battery usage on ics

Couldn't figure out why my battery life was so poor the for the last month or so. Good to see I'm not the only one with the problem.
AOKP ICS with Franco kernel gave me amazing battery life. Jelly Bean not so much.

I personally believe that anyone getting more screen time than you (this goes for anyone) is:
a) Using their phone in an environment that is less bright than you (indoors, on the bus, in the subway)
b) and / or not syncing as many things as you / not as often as you.
Reverse the above for people getting less screen time than you.
This is the truth of the matter.
Personally, I get 2 to 3 hours to 3.5 hours of screen time on JB, depending on usage.
4 hours if I read in bed at night.
Edit: Kernel / ROM be damned, maybe it'll make 10 to 15 minutes worth of difference. NOBODY has presented scientific proof of any ROM/kernel being different from any other. It's always "oh yaa best battery life ever with this rom". It's just noise and cherry-picked screenshots.

I usually get at least 1 day worth of charge. My set up is pretty easy tho. Since I am in front of a computer 75% of the time , gmail sync is turned off, twitter is @ 4 hours, Facebook set to never with location turned off. Phone gps and location are also turned off unless I M walking towards the bus stop. I don't need to be checking my phone every 5 minutes so my useage is pretty stable and predictable. I wonder what you guys are doing to make the battery die so quick? If your usage patterns are pretty high with checking email 100s of texts and lots of twitter and Facebook well yeah I'll die quick.
Also I seem to get the same results with custom kernels and stock. I have little experience with CPU controls and and such so maybe setting a lower frequency will help?

Battery can be related to many causes leading to user error. I never used ICS on this phone so I honestly have no idea how great the battery was.
Google now, project butter and many other optimizations are to blame yes.
Depends how much you use it and what is going and the vary of networks going on and off and switching. I can normally pull off 3-4 hours of near heavy use. My droid incredible could only get at least 1 hour max. So maybe it is me but the nexus is a godsend for me.
Leaving the governor at interactive with low max and undervolting will help battery and a specific kernel. I can normally roll with 0-10% brightness and have all networks running and syncing.
I'm tired and ready to cook my tacos I'll be back later with more input.

STOP overclocking your phone (even to 1350), under clocking exists you know.
STOP using interactive governors.

Try this...
I have an old Android phone that my boy plays with...so I turn the cell radio off & have it on the wifi signal only. Even with him having the screen on for hours & hours (usually playing games), the phone will stay on battery for almost 4 days!
Turn your cell radio to airplane mode & then turn on wifi only...mess around with it, play games & see what the difference is. When I have a Sprint signal (usually junk 2g one) at home I get poor battery life...when I hack the PRL to choose a 3g (better) signal I get twice the battery life...
I've seen other battery life threads where the signal is a MAJOR factor & even with a strong 2g signal the 3g is probably better at not wasting battery. (4g is a whole other story)

I've found 4 things that almost double my battery life
1) Google Maps: huge battery drainer. freezing it doesn't help either, it has to be uninstalled. Mapquest from the play store is a decent battery friendly alternative. or if you really need gmaps, copy the .apk file and install it when needed, then uninstall afterward.
2) Push Email apps: i.e. Yahoo mail app, Gmail app... use the built-in email app and set the refresh limit to every hour.
3) 3G/2G: when your not using data, put it to 2g networks only. huge battery savings especially if you're somewhere with a weak 3/4g signal.
4) NFC/WIFI/GPS : turn them off if your not using them (obviously)
your results may vary, but doing these things did wonders for my battery. I average 23-26 hours with 2.5-3.5 hrs screen on time. before that I was getting 14-16 hrs with about 1.5-2 hrs screen on

Well, Switching 2g/3g is pretty battery draining, too. So better be sure you don't use 3g networks for a while. constantly switching just to be a minute or two at 2g just drains more
Turning of WiFi is pretty obvious but NFC and GPS shouldn't take any battery juice if they arn't in use... Someone tested it and could proove, that gps only uses battery power if it's searching for a connection.

As you can see, you basically need t neuter your device and constantly worry in order to get 'great' battery life, lol.

Its a small battery, they should up the battery sizes. They can fit the samsung galaxy note 2's battery in the samsung galaxy nexus if they wanted too.. /the end.

yea I only switch to 2g when I know its just gonna be sitting in my pocket for a while, like when I'm at work. in that situation it definaetly helps. but your right switching constantly is bad too. :thumbup: as for NFC and GPS, it just seems to help for me, maybe its just placebo. like I said results may vary
