[Q] Rolling back to Froyo - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after a few days on GB I decided to roll back to Froyo. It seemed more responsive to me. I have two questions in relation to that:
1. Should I roll my modem back to EC05? My things that claimed to be EC05 specific seem to still be working.
2. If I stay on EI22 modem, can I use EI22 mods and themes? Or are they also tied to GB?
Thank you for any information!

You could roll it back, but I would test it out and see how out handles. If it works then let us know, if not, let us know, then flash back to EC05

So the modem itself is COMPLETELY independent from the ROM. You could technically still be on the DK28 modem and be running Gingerbread. All available modems are listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103 Most have found either EC05 or EH17 modem to be the best. I am running EI22 and have not seen much difference one way or the other, but its all based on your phone and the surrounding towers, but in general, Sprint service is horrible, so it doesn't really matter!

Well, I got some interesting results now.
Running EI22, SRF 1.2 ROM with Genocide kernel. Tried applying a theme from EI22, went into a boot loop. Tried a theme from EC05, still in a boot loop.
Reapplied the SRF, Genocide, and the EC05 theme, it works.
This leads me to believe that the EI22 theme, even when overwritten, left something icky behind.

you can't run an EI22 theme with an EC05 ROM. When using a theme, it is dependent on the ROM base, not the modem. So if you are on SRF 1.2, you can only use an EC05 theme.

Aww. Kinda makes sense, though I was misled by the modem numbers in theme names.
Thank you so much!

[Q] about dk28 modem?

I posted this in the dev Q&A, but I'm pasting it here so I can get an answer. Included is a follow up question from another user.
I apologize for the ignorance in advance.
when using using odin, when does the modem come into play? im finally going to go to dk28 from di18 because of the new ext4 support...
most guides, especially in the wiki, just instruct to use the .tar.md5 and the pit...
but a couple of posts (like ACS guide) link to the modem as well...
so what's the difference? what is the modem and when is it necessary to odin it?
do I even need to worry about it?
EDIT: I've read other posts in this thread and it SEEMS like it depends on whoever's method youre using (ACS post says modem, but whosdaman's *OFFICIAL* thread is a full .tar.md5 that includes modem data....
BUT...I still want to know what the modem actually is. I'd like an understanding of it so I could intuitively know if I have to deal with a modem in the future. Us IS guys don't like "because it says so" explanations lol. I like background info.
gmorf33 said:
I'm in a very similar spot as Squshy 7. Trying to get the files I need to flash up to DK28 and try out a new ROM (probably bonsai); however, in searching through the plethora of threads dedicated to DK28 and instructions, i've found quite a few subtle variances in all of them, leaving me a little confused on exactly which files i need to download.
I'm currently on ACS' DI18 based Syndicate ROM w/ Xtreme Kernel (latest of each)
I'm not afraid of Odin, so if that's the best way, that's fine.
I just need to know what files i need for the best, cleanest, bugfree flash. I will probably be going to EXT4 as well, so that probably makes a difference.
Is the post by artemis-nyc with the dk28 + cwm redirect + root what i want? It has odex'd and deodex versions. I've also seen links to the official .rel.md5 file on the Wiki... there's also the ACS DK28 DEODEX, and there's also noobnl's ODEX'd DK28. He has the modem flash here too...
I guess my biggest problem is there is just so much info on the forum right now, with people replying on different threads, so its really hard to keep straight what is the current stuff, and what is older/buggy stuff that should probably be avoided. I might be making this harder than it is lol.
I'm inclined to think is all I need is the dk28 modem then flash whatever rom I want, following their specific instructions. Is that correct?

You flash the DK28 modem with the DI18 tar? I was under the impression that the tar's include the modem and ROM. So wouldn't the DI18 tar include the DI18 stock ROM and DI18 Modem? I'm confused why you would mix the 2 versions.
Sorry, still just trying to fully get my head around all of this
I figured out my initial question for the most part though. I flashed DK28 modem + pit, then flashed the DK28 based ROM I wanted along w/ the ext4 mod and was fine on first try.
The *Official* Stock DK28 .tar.md5 is probably the best option for a clean start though from my understanding over the last few days of researching. If you have GPS issues the Odin back to the official stock DI18, get a GPS lock, Odin DK28 modem, get GPS lock, flash DK28 ROM, verify GPS lock...
Just took me a bit to get it all sorted out with so -much- stuff to sift through to get the right info

From my understanding, the modem is the "firmware" for the radio (data, phone, etc). Someone please correct if that's not accurate.
The modem is your radio or your software to allow the hardware to connect to the towers. I would def flash the modem or the md5 file including the modem dont try to use the di18 modem with dk28 just remember flash the pit and modem after you get a lock on maps on gps, then reboot di18 with the new dk28 modem and get another lock in maps with the gps, then flash the dk28 rom and get a third and final lock on gps or you'll have to go back to di18 and start over.

been away from here for a while... 2.3?

do we have STOCK 2.3? or ...
I'm running ACS 1.1 with twilight zone v1.1RC2 kernel.
Looking to upgrade to something BETTER/STRONGER/FASTER - with better 4G response (I've seen the hacks, someone built them into a rom maybe?) and good solid GPS.
Thoughts?
We don't have officia l Gingerbread yet, just leaks. They have issues, like random reboots. I suggest
1.) SyndicateROM Frozen 1.2(flash kernel right after rom, I suggest the ReVolt kernel) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131544
2.)ReVolted ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209549
3.)Urban Regeneration

I think I converted to EXT4 when I did ACS 1.1... any caviats? Is ACS 1.2 "gingerbread"? or does an official Epic release of Gingerbread not exist yet?
As I stated in my previous post, we do not have an offical gingerbread release. Only leaks. All of the roms I posted are EC05(Froyo) based and are all very stable. I'm pretty sure they are all ext4 compatible, but check the individual threads to be sure.

Ok -
just to make sure I don't muck up...
my phone says baseband s:d700.0.55.ec05
Build number =twilight zone v1.1.1rc2 hajime-taisho
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
That's ACS 1.1.1, right? SO I can just take the ACS 1.2 file and install from CWM?
thanks in advance!
I think so, but download a kernel anyways in case something happens.
You might be able to just flash 1.2 over 1.1.1 and keep going with your current kernel.
But, if that doesn't work, you'll have to wipe data/cache/dalvik 3x, flash 1.2 zip, flash kernel zip, then boot.
Roll Tide
If you're going straight from SRF 1.1.1 to 1.2, then you will be fine and retain your previous kernel.
You can flash directly over your current install. Of course, I'd suggest making a backup in CWM before flashing. I'm actually pretty sure the flashing process backs up for you, but another backup never hurts anyone.
If you update Superuser.apk via the Market, then you will start getting a notice that your binaries our outdated. You will then find that you cannot update them because it cannot touch the /sbin directory. You can either use a different kernel or find Zanderman112's post in the SRF 1.2 thread a few pages back about a retweet from k0nane.

I don't like that they reference using the ei22/ec05 tarball. You're better to odin back to DG27 or EC05 and then either accept the ota or use the update.zip method. You'll get the cleanest EI22 install that way.

To gain root you will have to use the method from the thread rooting ei22 in general but I also believe in clean flashing so I approve of accepting the ota atm cuz we don't have the tar file yet kinda annoying

My 4G works great too. In Daytona, we had 4G a week after the Epic release. They have expanded the coverage in the area as well. No reboots at all since the source kernel was released.

Soooooo ICS....safe yet?

Well I've had my replacement phone for a few days now. Been reading and keeping a close eye on all the ICS threads. These are a couple of methods I've seen posted more and more frequently to safely flash ICS.
1)Make a backup
2)Full wipe
3)Flash FB whatever
4)Flash FB whatever modem
Now to get back
5)Go into odin download mode
6)Odin El29 tar
7)Boot CWM
8)CWM restore
This next method I'm not to fond of do to Rom Manager being used.
1 thru 4 same steps.
5)Install Rom Manager
6)Flash CWM for AT&TSGS2
7)CWM restore
So what I'm here to find out is has ANY of you that have used one of these methods had any issues. Primarily getting back from ICS.
Really itching to flash some new ICS awesomeness but trying to play it safe also. Not looking to dish out another 100 dollar deductible.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
ive been using ICS since my replacement... i just refuse to flash CWM.
I use Steady Hawkins versions and havent had a problem. Once he releases a fb21 compatible kernel/recovery ill flash.
Be safe and good luck...

My first attempt at failed badly! But with some praying and Odin, I recovered and flashed a working fb17 over. But I have yet to get a wifi tether to work. That is the only thing that keeps me from using it as my daily.

I haven't bothered with any of the FB stuff; I hate the stock look, and TW in general..
But, I have been on all the CM9 versions so far, and, I gotta say, that aside from occasional LOS, which is easily cured with a program called fresh network, and a so so gps, it pretty much works flawlessly for me...
And, it REALLY looks nice and different!

Here is a video on how to switch for TW to the native ICS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6yZk_szFU7c)
and if you use the de-odex'd rom you can flash this ICS theme (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506945)
I've been on ICS for a few days now and just went to FB21 today running TNZ's Blend ICS and it runs great. I was a little hesitant to switch too but just remember to nandroid backup, and fully wipe in cwm and your good. Use odin to flash kernels and get back cwm, then use cwm to flash modems, then update profile and prl when done. If you don't like it then just odin back to gb (don't use cwm) and flash a kernel again, then flash whatever rom in cwm that you want.

personally, I've jumped between ICS and stock el29 rooted several times using the second method... I think you should be fine as long as you don't flash touch recovery.

Agreed, I won't let hitman touch my phone until it's fixed.
Ive been using these mostly everything works even sprint tv.. Only thing im missing is wifi tether but usb works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516176
I've flashed around 30 times between FB15, FB17, FB21 and back to EL29 in various combinations while testing the ODIN One-Click packages in my signature and the CWM repacks in the Auto Root thread.
Didn't have any problems, so I think the early flashing issues are avoided as long as fake flashing CWM Touch using update.zip or ROM manager and then subsequently using it to restore or wipe is avoided.
Thanks sfhub, that's good enough for me.
Time to start downloading and flashing some ICS goodness.

[Q] No service after flashing to CleanGB, CWM 5.0.2.7 from 2.1 DI18

I thought this phone was on 2.3, but it was on 2.1 (or 2.2) DI18. I updated CWM to 5.0.2.7 and then flashed CleanGB MTD.
When I reboot, I cannot get service, and airplane mode switches really fast between on and off.
I believe it may be the modem, so I am trying to upgrade the modem from DI18 to EC05 so I can update to EL30. However, the current DI18 to ECO5 flashable zip I have is giving me an error (Status 7).
Aside from from the modem, any other thoughts on how to fix it?
Thanks.

You can just flash a modem through odin . I think the newest official tar is el30 so here it is : EL30 Modem.tar place this in the PDA box in odin make sure nothing but auto-reboot is checked and hit start. Make sure you have a trusty cable and not a stock one. You could also need to update your prl as well as your profile so do that wait a minute or so and reboot the phone. You can do this in the about phone section where it says updates or something similar.. i dont know cuz im on cm9
It could also be a bad download of CleanGb so you can always try redownloading and reflashing that.

I would say coming from Eclair, he might want to stick to official 2.3 Touchwiz for awhile rather than go to AOSP ROMs.
Hm
No matter what you choose to flash, I would of Odin'd the latest Official Tar, and then done a profile update, prl update, etc. THEN Flash the rom/poison of your choice. IF you do end up going to whatever MTD rom, there's an EL30 SD Temp flashable build on Epic CM9 Blog that can let you update your profile on MTD Roms that support kexec, which I think most, if not all, do by now. That way you can update your profile, prl, etc without having to Odin back. Glad to hear that a modem update fixed it!
