I've tested it twice now, it works.

No, it does not work. There is a link on Skype support page discussing it
h t t p : / / community.skype.com/t5/Android/GALAXY-NEXUS-ANDROID-4-0/td-p/286792

Seems as if some can and some can't ...really wish Skype would get on updating their app to support all ffc phones :-/

I wish this as well, but in our case with the GN, it has only been on the market for 3 weeks. As early adopters app compatibility will be a hassle for a couple of months.

I Skyped using video earlier with my gf so yes it works on the nexus

I can confirm it works. I've used it now several times since I've had this phone, both the front camera and the back camera work perfectly. I even took it a step further and connected my phone to the television via mhl so I could see her on the tv while I talked (you'd be surprised how well the mic picked me up). I set my phone on it's side and had it pointing across the room (a la Kinect) and it worked beautifully. Long story short, yes it works. Perhaps the people it isn't working for are running custom roms or have made some sort of change to their phone. I am still stock, with the exception of having installed google wallet.

The first time i used it was crashed but yesterday i tried again and it was working. i had video calling conversation for about 30 mins?! rear and front camera was working fine

I tried a couple minutes ago and it did work. I am using a rooted stock ROM.

This is weird. First time I tried Skype video didn't work, but having read your posts I gave it another shot. It worked fine now.

Looks like Skype made a server side fix. Video transmitting works, albeit only in landscape mode.

Epic <-> PC Video Calling?

What's the best way to go about doing video calling on the Epic with a PC? I don't think Qik can do it, from what I understand Fring used to support Skype, but Skype has since blocked them. What's the next best?
Qik In Touch is what its called. This is why the whole front camera movement has taken place. I run it on my MAC and Windows via boot camp. Google it, it will take you to their website. Or click on the website link for them in the market.
Another thing, I have an Evo, I will forwarn you, the epic's screen is what makes it crisp but the quality is not all that different. Enjoy...
Sent From The Moon...
just got my epic today and downloaded the qik in touch app... would u be able to put down some direction so me and my daughter can talk thru a video call when im using my epic and shes using qik in touch on my pc...
I downloaded Qik In Touch - it appears to me that it will let someone view your videos live, but not interact with you like a video call, correct?
i have the epic 4g and cannot get any video calls to connect. got a friend who also has an epic 4g and we cnanot seem to connect to each other. ideas?

If the the both of yall have epic's use fring from the market. It should work great.
I tested fring from my evo to another evo and to a pc via the fing app. I assume my Epic will fare as well.
Worked well, but had the delay you should expect.

What did you use to video call a pc from your evo? I hear skype has blocked fring. Is there another program that accepts fring video calls on a pc?
Sorry for the bit of thread necro, but does anyone know how to go about this? I was excited about the video chat, but no one I know uses an iPhone 4, Epic, or Evo, and I was expecting to be able to talk to PCs with webcams.
i found 2 versions, qik video and qik for HTC evo 4g, 2 different apps, but i didnt found wik in touch.
i was really hoping to do video chat with a pc, hopefully skype will get this thing going ASAP.
I been using Movicha... but is not real good... and I think is a issue with the Epic... only works good with the Evo.. I think the Evo had more develoment interest on developers than the Epic.. so I thinking in retuning my Epic for a Evo..

As far as I know, the first Android phone with a front camera was the Evo (correct me if I'm wrong), which was released a solid three months ago. If it was just a matter of there being existing but currently incompatible software, it wouldn't be nearly as big a deal, but as far as I can tell there's just nothing to fill this need. On top of that, this is all assuming that it should be left up to third party developers, when I think this should have been available in the first place (at the very least, given us a Windows or Flash chat client for Qik).
i can get fring msging and voice calling to work but it says video is not supported when i try with aim or gtalk
yahoo video messenger works. Kinda sucks though. Hopefully they'll improve it. But If you really need phone <-> pc then this is it.
for video from phone <-> phone, I recommend Tango or Fring. I like Tango the most because its super simple and the video seems a bit better. Tango occasionally has an issue with the mic, usually toggling the mic of and on again will get it working.

And that is because it does not exist or it is not out yet, correct me if i am wrong.
Yahoo just announced the other day that an official messenger app with video for Android is coming out soon, so watch out for that.
Plus Skype is going to release a Galaxy S compatible version of Skype soon as well (other Android phones work with Skype right now). :-(
So for now, it's only phone to phone (via Tango, not my favourite but it works) for us Epic users. I just completed a Tango test call from my Epic to a friend's iPhone 4.
Forgive My Brevity. To Be Or Not To Be...

Video chat on Epic.

Any app? Running Froyo.
Thanks.

I use Tango, but audio isn't great. Both are on Wifi.
Yahoo chat works well if you have a good connection. If you don't it won't even let you. You'll need to download the messenger and yahoo video ? It tells you what to download extra. I never have any problems. I hear my girlfriend and she hears me as well. Video is fluid the four times I've used it.
It just sucks cause you are sideways during videochat.

tons of threads on this.
Yahoo's good-ish but displays images wrong (yours, specifically) and is about 50MB for both. Lots of PC/Mac users have Yahoo Messenger already.
OoVoo requires recipients to download a new application on their PC but it requires less phone memory (about 3MB) and the images are displayed correctly. Seems more fluid to me as well on 3G.
I just got my epic not quite two weeks ago and it came with Qik pre-installed. Tried it out with my wife (she has an Epic, too) and... while it worked, it didn't look great.
Thanks to everyone. Trying qik right now.

For me Yahoo messenger fit the bill. Although it has an issue putting me upside down, it allows me to video chat with people who do not have smart phones. The quality is pretty good too, if you can get past being upside down.
I'm sure this will be fixed shortly, or hope it is. The first release didn't work at all.

Apparently my post was skipped. Oovoo works well and you are shown properly in both your view window and the recipient's view window.
I actually used tango for the first time last night.
well actually it was me, my sister and my cousin here in florida using it with my cousin in new york. We used it on every platform. first we used my sisters iphone 4 and saw our cousin had it so we called her and it was on att 3g with one bar and worked wayyyy better than expected.
there was a few hiccups and then disconnected because of the signal, so we tried with my cousins ipod touch on wifi and we tangoed my cousin in new york (not sure what phone she has but its an android) and it was crystal clear and the audio was clear.
then i wanted to try it out on the epic and it went through with no problems on wifi. it was even clearer than the ipod touch! unfortunately, i have noooooooo service down here in tampa so i couldnt test it out on 3g, but my guess is that if it went through on Att 3g with 1 bar, it will be excellent on sprint 3g.
it also worked to tango my co-worker who happened to visit miami at the same time we came to florida but his end was kinda blurry. it was more like the difference you see when you go from playing a video game in 720p and then watching a tv show in 480i lol
the thing i like about tango is that if someone has tango, it'll show up in the contact list and its as easy as just tapping their name and then tapping the "Video" button. its like an iphone interface.
hope this helps in your decision making!
PS. you dont show up sideways. neither does the other person. my cousin in new york was laying down sideways and the video was still full screen on our end
Is there some sort of way to patch a fix for the front facing camera orientation glitch? I hate being sideways..
I believe oovoo works the best just make sure if a pc user is trying to oovoo just make sure they have the latest version that is compatible so you can video chat with your device, app is free in market.

[Q] What is the best video chat app for Evo?

What is the best video chat app for Evo?
My vote goes for firing. My brother lives in Mesa Az. And I've had good luck using this program
Tango, your always signed in and doesn't waste battery at all, fring you have to be signed in if not no video call, qik is annoying for people receiving calls because half don't know you have to press the Mic button to speak and its not.cross platform.
Tapped on XDA Premium
Tango, by far. Like the guy above me said, takes no battery life, cross-platform, always signed in, and is all-around kick-ass. Plus, you don't have to make an extra account, AND it can work with your Google Voice number.
Fring? Eats your battery alive, has bugs every other day, looks like a toddler threw up on a screen, and requires you sign in every ten minutes.
Qik? Jesus Christ, it's worse than Fring...
Even though the general consensus is Yahoo sucks for most things, their messenger client on the phone has worked VERY well for me. (besides being a HUGE apk)
Phone to phone video over 3G worked perfect for me, (Well, roughly 2 months ago before Sprints network went to shambles) along with phone to computer.
The best part is a lot of people still have some old lame Yahoo account from 10 years ago that still works. Bonus not having to sign up for any BS
by far i would say tango
Tango Hands Down!
Best luck with Tango and Yahoo Messenger. Fring is horrible. And Qik works on and off

has the tango quality improved??? at first, it was TERRIBLE!!!! has anyone tried to video chat w/ sipdroid? the quality seems the best to me...a little more complicated for a novice though.
I tried Tango out when I first got the phone (september or so?) and I found it drained the **** out of my battery life when I wasn't using it. Have these problems been rectified?

Yes you got the app when it was first being developed. The devs where quick to listen to the people and resolve the problem. I have had it on my phone for a month now and its been flawless and battery consumption has been next to none, except for when I use the app then of course it uses some battery

Cool.....I'll try it again. I also tried it when it first came out and it was a battery killer and resource hogger. I've sworn by Fring since then.
The best videochat i have found, dont laugh, is to use my Hotspot and use my IPOD touch and facetime. For some reason i get better video and voice then anything i can find on the EVO. But of course, the other person also needs Apple's Facetime, as my girlfriend does.
We tried Oovoo and its not bad, video is slow and audio always seemed to get out of sync and the annoying bug of it never leaving the notification bar.
Google Talk w/Vid?
Sorry if this was asked in another thread, if you know of one please post a reply with the link?
I have a Moto Xoom, google talk with front facing cam is working alright so far for a couple friends that have netbooks with built in cams.
I have a couple friends with EVO's but say you can't use it for video chat in google talk. Anyone up on as to why or how to use it?

[Q] Video chat options?

So what options do we have with the SGS2 for video chat/calling?
I see in the dialer/contacts there is an option to call somebody with video, how
does that work? Has anybody been able to try it?
D
I can confirm that the video calling from the dialer works great between two SGSIIs, even over a week 3G signal.
If you have root access, you can also install the new Google Talk app that has video. Works great as well between phone and PC over wifi at least.
I haven't tested other than this, but it gets me in touch with my fiancee on the phone and family/friends on Google Talk. I have a feeling we'll be waiting a while for Skype video support now that they've been bought by Microsoft.
edit: There are of course other third party options but I want to use the ones with the greatest adoption and compatibility between devices, which is Skype and Google in my opinion.

I wonder how long 'we' will have to wait for Android 2.3.4 with the Gtalk/video/voice built in? Or maybe Google will release the Gtalk app with this feature on the market soon.
Guess I could always root
Can someone confirm that Gtalk video chat on AT&T only works over WiFi? I can see & chat with people over 3G and it will even say video available and show the video icon but it then tells me that I need WiFi. Is there a way around this? Perhaps an edit to the prop file or even the Gtalk file thru root exployer to enable the video over 3g..?

Are you sure? I think Paul's auto install is the version that only works over wifi. I've installed that version off a fresh hard reset twice and no 3g. I believe someone from that thread actually said that apk was for the wfi only version.
UPDATE: Figured it out. I had to find the updated Talk2.apk and I used root exployer to copy over the old APK. Since it was already installed, that's all I had to do. Re-booted and Google Chat now works over 3g. Wow, it logged in 1st attempt after re-boot with no issues and started working right away. Good stuff... One quick question thou. When someone tries to video chat with me, I only get the notification saying someone tried to video chat but you were not on WIFI. I can then go right ahead video chat them back over 3g and everything is fine. So, I only ring for a video chat if I'm in WIFI but can send no problem over 3g..? Is that where we are at with it or is there something I'm missing..?
Tango is another great video calling app on the market its free and it works real good 3G and wifi it also detects who in youre contact list has it

are video calls using the "stock" functions generally only supported between devices of the same make/model?

Do they have UK or EURO standard video chat over 3G enabled? I know I did hear that you can video chat within the dialer with SGS2 to SGS2. If anyone wants to dare try this from one SGS2 to another, or any other GSM phone that has the video chat icon in the dialer. let me know.
