P.S. I know this thread may piss off many people who think these things should not even be discussed on xda developers but what can i do? This site is the perfect place to gain popularity for the petition.
nice idea
i have voted for you

Hi Mods,
Am I the only one who find "Development and Hacking" hard to browse?
Is it perhaps possible to create sub sections in this thread? Like all those
WM 6.5 and later Wm 7.x topics? Only of interest if you use those OSes.
Perhaps also sections for Today Plugins by type: manilla etc etc.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
I would make subforums for: Games, Apps, UIs etc. Most of the apps for 6.1 are compatible with 6.5 and vice versa, so imo there's no need for making such sections

agreed, especially skins...they sometimes crowd the first page and hide the interesting stuff back a dozen pages.
but it would also be benificial if you could toggle on or off certain topics at the top of the board
This was mentioned on the blackstone forum - I commented there that it would be good to see sub-categories for resolutions so questions specific to WVGA (for example) would more likely be found by another WVGA user and hopefully answered (titanium apps are a good example of this).
There is a lot of us on here these days with a lot of different models which is what makes this community so great but some more granularity would surely assist us in looking for help and where possible, help others.
I voted yes but "no" and "fine as it is" are the same answer are they not????
Yep you are very right My fault. Did it a bit too quick. But cannot change it anymore.
Yeah I agree with the Games/Skins/Apps/Drivers.../Ideas/ etc.. Its hard to find what you need when the good stuff can be pushed back 4 or 5+ pages by skins/themes or stuff you already have.
by reolution..

I agree...
the best way would be..
1.WVGA
2.VGA
3.QVGA
4. all resolutions..
5. and so on....
i think games and apps and wat not might get muddled...
resolutions is the way to go
Thread Moved to : About xda-developers.com Forum
please yes. that section is an absolute mess. organizing by resolution or better yet, type of software would be fantastic.
"No" and "Fine as it is" is the same answer
And I also say "no" , because it's a development Forum - and it's a need to think outside the box. If we would have sections for Apps, Games or for Systems like 6.5 or Resolutions - some people never would look into and would know, which new Technologies or Ideas are available.
And for Developers (they are used to a search function) there are ideas at all the most important issue.
And have a look on other sides, where you see the "high gloss brochures" - which shows the free apps for WinMo with categories - in manner of AppStore from Apple - at the end you will find a link to xda-devs, to download or know more about the Apps
It's logical, that this poll will have as result, that there should be sub-categories for xda-devs - it's good for downloaders.
But for developers: They would oversee new ideas on other plattforms, the would get a tunnel vision on their own system.
And not so much ideas... would result in fewer Apps & Dwnloads. And so the people would have a nice overview (perhaps), but not so much cool ideas at all.
There are more than enough sides, which categorizes the Developers Apps here. But please leave us our "development environment" here - to see, with which people we could work together, to provide new Apps& Ideas... for everybody of us. What's up, if we would only develop for one resolution? And then we have to switch everything if we make multi-res? Senseless additional work for Developers... and especially too much work for the Mods.
It's better to work with Prefixes like "[App]" that makes a better overview. And Recommendations in the Sections of each device here.
And also to have as Downloader a possibility to think outside the box.
Micha
I have to disagree with you on at least one point.
This is from our home page...
But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
The poll is certainly backing this up.
Now 281 reads but only 55 votes. Seems that a lot of visitors don't care.
@mods, can you please make it a sticky in Development and Hacking until the end of the poll?
Cheers
Firstly thank you for putting my TallMin icons the main site, very much appreciated. I have a question (posting so that I won't get banned if I'm doing wrong). I understand that people won't go into a different phone forum to check for icons, so am I ok to post multiple threads showing my icons?
For instance 1 on the desire themes section, and one in the nexus one themes section?
As I said I have already created these, but if it is deemed to be spam in your eyes please do let me know and I'll remove the extra threads asap.
Thanks
Your welcome
You can post threads to your work with no problem, just be sure you don´t double post the same work on different sections.
it is the same work though, but only posting it in one phone section sort of cuts out a whole lot of people who would also be interested. I couldn't find anything in the rules about this so thought it best to clarify directly.
(I've also seen people post same work in multiple phone sections so this is why i thought it should be ok)
This forum is so big that it´s almost impossible to be aware of all threads and posts. XDA rules mention no double posting/thread is allowed.
I got your point and for that you can use a better section to publish your work like:
Windows Mobile Themes
(Themes and skins for Windows Mobile devices)
Or
Windows Mobile Apps and Games
(Applications and games created by xda-developers users for use on Windows Mobile. No commercial apps/games allowed.)
So no matter what device, you can have one single thread containing all resolutions or specific devices.
I see thanks. Quite a few of the threads already have replies in, I'm almost certain some of those replies are from people that would have not seen the post if it only existed in the forums you mentioned. So I have to disagree with that rule, but will of course abide by it.
didn't know this was a rule but I suppose it does make sense,
Sent from my HTC Super Hero using XDA App which doesn't have the word iPhone in its vocabulary, and I wish I didn't either all on my custom baked Rom
With so many roms and software being developed and so many questions being asked over and over again, it occured to me that there is not (correct me if i am wrong) a public bug tracker for XDA.
Ideally integration with the user database and even possibly the threads (more than just a url link) would be great.
If we had a way of tracking and submitting bugs then i think each dev or cook could better manage the bugs in thier software and i think it will help reduce the duplicate requests and bug reports going on in each thread.
The bug tracker could split between software types, platform, then also have device sections with each rom under that, much like XDA is structured at the moment, in fact probably identical to reduce the confusion and help with the linking and integration.
What bug trackers could possibly be used that would integrate with XDA? Bugzilla?
I am more than willing to setup an instance for testing etc, who would be keen to see and help with this? Integration will be the biggest task.
Interesting Idea, I guess that would have to involve developer consent that they want their work to be tracked. Having people discuss in threads isnt bad as that is what the forum is for but a tracker type online utility may be good for huge projects which would cut down on posts saying "Hey whats the status of Bug X and Y?"
Good idea
I used my own tracker for a while, but for xda we would have the issue of how to assign users to what role.
Every time I made a rom, I would need to request a new category and get ten pepper added as project authors ...
Trouble with the tracker that I found was that it just got messed up like the forums. Trust me that nobody searched it.
I reverted to a dedicated subforum, eventually, as it was less work in managing. I had appointed a second bug system admin, yet still got heaps of stuff to do...
A tracker is a great idea, but would be misused, and there stupid "why is camera no work kthxbai" posts would continue by those not checking the tracker.
Integrating a attacker is pretty easy on a username perspective, but harder on a people perspective
Still, I like the idea, but can envisage huge amounts of work for svetius, making new categories every time a new rom appears etc ...

yeah i agree with all of your points, i guess i was thinking that if it were somehow integrated into the forums then it'd be used more. as far as roles, a simple request to establish a project that would then be assigned to the dev in question. they could then choose to add extra people.
i just have no idea what tracker could and how fully integrated it would be with the forums.
it seems to me that if some of the noob "why is x not working" could be at least reduced by a bug tracker, hell we could even weed out the noobs by saying that unless you check and submit bugs no questions will be answered in the forum.
anyway, thought it was worth mentioning and getting the ball rolling. We could do some basic pilots of different trackers based on any known integration benefits.
1. The mobile app has a handy tab that lets you view all the threads you've 'participated' in whether you've subscribed or not. It would be nice if this existed for the desktop version of the site.
2. The mobile app does not have an easy to access tab for accessing subscribed threads. It would be nice if it had this feature.
Sorry if this is not the right plce ot post this.
To view subscribed threads on the app, click on the Favorites tab then click on Topics.
To make the suggestion for a participated section on the website, use the (requests) From Users to the Mods and Admins thread, but the request has been made before and the general response is just to auto-subscribe to threads you post in.

Strange that they blow off a feature that is so prominent in the app.
Thanks.

True, but when features get added that aren't really needed (because of the work around) that's when things can start going wrong.
Just like the report feature that used to be part of the app.

On your profile there is a link to "Find all posts by <you>". It links to http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?do=finduser&u=<your userid>. Click on that, it is exactly the same search that the "Find threads I participated in" uses.
Dear XDA members and developers, in case all of your apps need to be tested, and tested correctly, I would like to introduce my google+ beta community here:
Betaapps
As many of you know, Google implemented beta testing options to the Google Play Market and this option based on google+ communities, where you can invite your testers.
These way have a huge advantage:
1) Users can install your beta application directly from Play Market (they can trust your app more, and they don't need to move *.apk files on the device).
2) You will have a simple bugtracker with crash reports, it should increase quality of received feedbacks.
My community should help developers to share their beta programs and invite testers to their communities. If you have a post on XDA forums with your application beta promo, you also can just share the link to our community to the "Request feedback" section with no worry that it will be removed (even if you don't have any community). There are not so much places where you can find a list of beta testing programs, like in our "apps" section, and I also would like to invite all XDA members who want to be notified about new android apps in beta to join our Betaapps community as a tester.
For now, Betaapps community is growing and it will be very helpful if you will share this community with your google+ circles and other social networks. This forum section could be more effective for developers if they will know how to get more testers.
Actually I have a big plans in beta testing field and my community and I hope that XDA members will enjoy my activities and our work will be help testers and developers meet each other. Welcome for your comments.
* for moderators: It would be great to pin this post in this forum section. I also
can place a link to this post in our community description to help people visit XDA. Thanks!
Hey if tester positions are still opened please consider me.. As I'm a real QA Analyst so can easily find and report the bugs n I'll prefer Quality all the way...
Thanks

Welcome - Betaapps community is a part of crowd testing. It's mean that everyone can become a tester and of course you can be invited privately for more interesting projects, if your testing skills are good.
There are a lot of free testing programs there and you can join any of them, by the way I will share some information about other beta platforms where you can find paid projects in "crowd" section. Stay tuned and you will become a part of a big crowd testing project with paid opportunities and other awesome features.
You can also introduce yourselves there, and share that community with your friends. We are looking for active QA professionals there :highfive:
