[Q] Root Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Sprint - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

hello all,
I have a questions about the root on my device..
Last week I bought a SGS2 4G Epic Sprint, and I unlocked for use on Mexico, Iusacell company...
currently the phone it's perfectly work is CDMA...
With the phone root and unlocked, I can update to new version of the Android..??
Regards...

Unlocking for use in another country and rooting are not the same thing. Are you sure you are rooted? Even if you are, there is not a stable Ice Cream Sandwich ROM ready for this phone yet.

I think the question is whether or not the firmware can be updated while rooted?

I think that's what he was asking. You can update it by flashing new firmware but will not get over the air update if rooted

I was curious about that too. So if you're on a stock ROM w/root or a custom ROM and try to update it from the GUI will it just return an error or will it not even show there's a firmware update?

ok ok
my phone only it's unlocked, still are not rooted because i'm not sure by this questions....

Yes, I am interested in the answer to this as well. What happens when a completely stock, yet rooted, ET4G phone tries to receive either a pushed, or requested OTA update?

I don't know if this is the same case, but this might help:
I bought a Nexus S 4g to use in Mexico, and after unlock, I was still getting the OTA updates, and after rooting too. but the problem I had when updating an OTA on my rooted phone was that when I updated the OTA update I lost my root access (since it was an OTA of a Stock not-rooted ROM)

If you are only rooted and take a ota update it will work and will remove root as no company is going to send a ota update rooted.... That is why they tell you never update a rooted phone as there may not be a way to root it again if you do.... Not as big of a deal with Samsung as we can root with Odin...HTC was bad about this ....

T-Mobile update notification not going away, but i'm rooted + custom ROM

I just rooted and flashed beast mod on my gs2. An hour after using it, T-mobile popped up in my notification tray with a new update. I'm assuming this is 2.3.6 and eventually the dev's will develop or update their roms.
I just want to make sure that I shouldn't update my phone this way, or I will be bricked?
i dont think it will brick you, but it will unroot you.

Juggernaut v3.7 and Tmobile software update????
I am using Juggernaut v3.7 ROM, and my phone recently constantly show Message about upgrade the software from Tmobile. What should I do next? Flash stock rom 2.3.6 to get rid of Tmobile upgrade? and then can I flash Juggernaut v3.7 back to my phone?
Is there any way to disable (inside the code or build.prop file) the upgarde notification?

Can I do the T-Mobile update while rooted on a custom rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This is going to be a hot item for most of us with rooted phones. Simply no way of knowing what will happen should we let the update go through. And just to be safe, most of us would prefer to cancel the update.
I followed someone else's advice and used Titanium Backup Pro to:
- wipe data for "Device Manager"
- "freeze" the same application
The nag is gone. I reckon this method should work for everyone with rooted phones.
Otherwise, we'd need to wait to respective ROM teams to release their own patches etc.
TB team should see a nice uptick in app purchases in next few days. The app is well worth it, so if you been on a fence, get it now, $6 well spent.
[Q]OTA Update but i'm rooted?
I just got the ota update. It says it's going to automatically update my phone in 24 hrs. Is this going to mess my phone up? I am currently rooted with. Bombradier rom. Do I need to do anything? Thanks

i am rooted with stock rom and receive the update, np at all. In your case, you have a different rom and not stock. odin probably is the best bet.
bought sgs2 last weekend and rooted using superoneclick and at the end of the day, receive ota update and update my sgs2 and i forgot that i am rooted. i left my phone to finish updating and when i came back, its up and have 2.3.6 uVKL1, did not receive any problem. battery great, wifi calling is there. im just surprised it let me update even though my phone is rooted. btw stock rom, stock kernel just rooted.
I think I'll just wait until somebody comes out with an official sticky solution because I didn't flash any ROM to mine, I just rooted it.... I don't know what to do either... Until someone posts a solution there will be several posts pertaining to this subject

A few quick questions about the phone you just got:
1) Was it made in China or Korea?
2) Is the build version yakju or something like yakjuwx/yakjusc/yakuux/etc? You can find this with the Android system info app
3) Who did you buy it from?
Thanks!
Got my 4.0.2 update today in the morning (an hour ago) as well.
1. How to check that? Sticker under the battery doesn't have that info.
2. Mine is "yakjuwx". What does it say?
3. I bought mine in Lithuania/Europe and not from a mobile operator but from official store. Box says that it's made in Korea and distributor - Poland/Europe.
BTW, what has been fixed in 4.0.2?
i believe it's the latest if you're unrooted.. no official update for 4.0.3 yet..
Also recieved 4.0.2 today and got yakjuxw
My phone (i9250) just downloaded the 4.0.2 update. Upon reboot it got stuck on that android busy screen. After about half an hour I removed the battery. I could then boot into Android normally. It's still 4.0.1 and now claims there are no updates available.

not an official OTA, but the official 4.0.3 update itself is right there on google's servers for any nexus user to build for themselves. Build your own zip.
There was rumor/speculation of another update release by the end of January.

If you used the WugFresh tool kit to unlock and root your phone, then it installed ClockworkMod Recovery. Having CWM on your phone will prevent it from receiving OTA updates.
IMHO if you've unlocked and rooted your phone, it's time for a custom rom. There are some really good, stable roms out there using 4.0.3. And the developers update far more frequently than you'd recieve OTA updates.
Don't be scared, the developers have made it as easy as they possibly could. Before a month ago, I'd never run anything but a stock phone. I'm still a complete noob, but I've run three different custom roms, flashed kernels, radios, and added mods... Just follow directions, always back-up, and if things get hairy, you've a large community of really smart people who are willing to help.

No need to unroot. The update will still work even with root. However, you need to flash back the stock recovery, or the update won't install automatically.
If you get OTA root keeper https://market.android.com/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper by supercurio you won't even loose root after the update, well thats the idea. Our phone is supported and I'm waiting to try it out.

Could be wrong but last I checked 4.0.2 was the last official OTA for the CDMA nexus as well. Only two or so people received 4.0.4 and that was a fluke. But like I said, I could be wrong.

It may not be widespread yet, but if there is an official download link available (i.e., like this http://android.clients.google.com/p....signed-mysid-IMM30B-from-ICL53F.659e0a8f.zip), in my opinion it's pretty official.

Root doesn't prevent OTA updates from installing. However, installing the update will unroot the phone unless you use something like CWM which can keep root for you.

Of course. And after promising the update after advertising it they halt it. And they put out no official posting of this that I could find. Or the person you talked to is full of it because they don't know why you have not got it and don't want to bother or don't know how to figure it out. The last is the most likely.
Now of it is true about the bug I wonder if they will push the bug free version out to everyone again.

You updated via Kies? I believe AT&T is only updating OTA, not through Kies.
Also, I was pure stock, but rooted. The update failed. It left my phone half updated and I couldn't get it to update, even after unrooting. This appears to be what happened to most rooted 4.1.1 phones on AT&T.
I had to flash back to stock via Kies in order for the update to work.

Oh I'm sorry. Since this is an AT&T forum I just assumed.
I'm sure in a worse case scenario you can just flash it back to stock. I choose to use Kies because then I didn't have to download the correct firmware like you do with Odin.
The flash counter still says 1, but the Device Status did reset to Normal. Of course I lost root.

I don't think rooting enables tripping the counter. From what I understand, Tripping flash counter occurs when you flash a custom recovery on jellybean. Best method is to just reset the flash counter when you are going to unroot your phone by using the TriangleAway app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
