OK, this is my first post, and i apologize if someone has posted on this already. I searched and didnt find anything, and since i dont see a section for this phone yet, im posting in general.
I searched via google and found nothing on the nitro, so searched for the LG Optimus LTE. The method i found for that phone did nothing, it just gave me errors when trying. So, i thought i would try SuperOneClick. Im used to Samsung devices which are super easy to root, so im not sure if what i encountered in Super were normal or not.
I allowed super to force an install drivers for the device and then unplugged the phone and plugged it back in. The root started and errored out after trying a zerg rush. I didnt unplug the phone or anything, i just immediately tried again. This time it said it was successful but when attempting to restart ADB, the software hung. I restarted, and also unplugged then replugged in the phone. Clicked root one more time, and it worked.
Anyways, im simply posting because like many others, i search these forums before going anywhere else, and im hoping that my experience will help someone else. I dont know if it was a fluke that i had to try multiple times or it was just something with my configuration. I hope this helps someone, just be persistent and it should work.
perm root'd? that'd be great. Can any one else confirm?

Yup, its permanent. I powered off then back on, still had root. Then just for good measure, i powered down and removed the battery. Reinstalled battery, booted back up, and still showed SuperUser in the app drawer. So i went into terminal emulator, typed su, and was prompted with the wonderful little box to allow super user. So, its functioning for me.
Nice work! Thanks for sharing your experiences. What are your impressions of the Nitor so far? Looking forward to receiving mine soon
As far as first impressions go, I'm quite impressed. This is the first LG device I've owned and the build quality seems very solid. I was concerned about the back feeling flimsy because of all the videos on the phone I had watched. They all made it look cheap. To my surprise in person it does look and feel a lot better than expected.
The screen, which we all know is the biggest feature of this phone, doesn't disappoint. The higher resolution makes viewing webpages and reading email so much easier on the eyes. Text is smooth and clear. The whites seem brighter and it makes text really stand out. Just to test it I watched Pirates of the Caribbean last night on it. It was a bluray rip in 720p and I actually ended up watching the whole thing that way because it looked so clear and I was drawn in.
This being a new device, I haven't been able to do much more than that. The only issue I have seen so far is that the sensitivity on the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen isn't what I'm used to with Samsung and HTC. You tend to have to tap them a little more firm than what I would expect but in all honesty that could also be a direct result of the screen protector.
One final note, this thing is a lot snappier than I expected. Other than right after a fresh boot, I have yet to experience any lag.

hey guys... i just ordered mine yesterday, waiting for it to be shipped. new to android and this rooting thing... if i recall correctly i read somewhere that after rooting you can't remove every single piece of bloatware or your phone may not function properly? if this is true is there a list for this at&t model? thanks in advance
for some reasons, after i did root.
then do a Privacy -> Factory data reset
the phone is alot more snappier and faster!
Worked for me! Used Superoneclick 2.3.1.0. Forced the Driver install and it worked!
Took a couple tries for me as well, kept hanging up on step #7 but worked fine after I switched USB ports on my computer... thinking it doesn't like USB 3.0.
Thanks so much for the post!

Now that you mention it, that may have been part of what was going on. I was using the 3.0 ports on my computer as well. Its just habit because when i charge my phone on the other front ports on my tower, it gives feedback through my front audio. Anyways, i guess if you are using USB 3.0 and it gives you an issue, switch to 2.0 and see what that does.

Can verify I am perm rooted also. After resetting it does seem faster. Is it my imagination that the speaker is also louder?
I've tried a few things and can't get it to work. Would someone who has had success with this method please post a step by step guide? Once plugged in do we select Charge Only, Mass Storage, PC Software or USB Tethering? I assume that USB debugging should be checked? I plugged my phone in and the new hardware wizard launched. My machine never could find drivers for "CDC Abstract Contol Module" or "LG Android USB Device". I looked around on the LG website and found some drivers that didn't work. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
--Okay, I got it to work. I finally found the right drivers on the LG site. Somehow, USB debugging had become unchecked. Once I installed the drivers and checked USB debugging again and ran Super, it worked. It's so nice to have a device that has been out for just a couple of days and already have it rooted!

hm..thanks for this information, i was able to root the phone. Lesson one, make sure you are in debugging mode..dang it, took me awhile to figure that out..
Again thanks for the info
Whooooooooooooo after only 20 tries trust me i counted them i got root.
Not sure why, but this phone seems to disable USB Debugging when you switch modes from charge only, to pc mode or to any of the other modes. Maybe im just not remembering correctly, but i am fairly sure on my samsung and HTC devices that it would stay enabled.
Use overseas?
If I root the Nitro, will I be able to use it outside the USA? If not, how can I ?
I assume it comes locked to ATT, correct?
So I love this device so far, but the biggest concern I have is battery life. They obviously hadn't broken in the battery before it shipped, but after two to three drain/charge cycles it seemed to improve a lot.
After I rooted and removed all Bloatware I could find, installed setCPU and setup a profile for low power with the screen off and been testing it today.
With 6 hours of moderate (with occasional heavy) usage it dropped from 100% to 55%. This was occasional web browsing, lots of pulse reading, played a few vids, 20min of gaming, downloading about 5-6 apps, GPS off the whole time, and had wifi on for about 3 hrs. Ran some benchmarks (6434 antutu). To summarize, to me it seems average battery life, not anything to write home about but it's about even with what my Captivate used to hold up to.
Anyone else got suggestions for ways on improving battery life without hindering performance?

Mine just started to after lunch today. I've had it on the desk and saw it restart about 3 times in less than a 15 minute window.
How do I know this just started and it hasn't been going on in my pocket? Well over the weekend I would have heard it reset (since it's not on silent/vibrate like it is at work). It also significantly drains the battery more if you are constantly soft resetting it/turning it off and on.
So is anyone else having this issue? I need to figure out if it was just a freak occurrence or if something is wrong with it.
I did NOT root it, running everything stock - I did some updates on some apps I have installed but no new programs installed in a couple of days - again this just started happening today in the last couple of hours.
And besides email and messaging, I'm not running anything in the background like Pandora or eBuddy, so I don't think it's a program causing it to reset.
Edit:
Not sure if this is the best category for the thread, but I could not find any threads similar to this besides the battery issue in general. Apologies if this thread already exists somewhere.
No uncalled for restarts here. Open the back, pull the battery, check the contacts? Is it plugged in when it does this? Try padding the battery with a folded piece of paper between the door and battery to ensure a snug fit. If it still does that, time to go to a store.
@Jye75
Thanks, I have pulled out and looked at the battery. I have that Seido case they were slangin' at Best Buy on it, I don't think there's an issue with the contacts.
One weird thing is during one of the automatic restarts, the phone made the start up sound. I had the phone on vibrate and the start up before that (and after when I manually restarted it) did not have a tone. Very odd... perhaps it's possessed.
Odd indeed... drop by a Sprint store, would be my next move.
It happened to me two times today since I did the full root last night. The last time it happened, I clicked on a input field and it restarted...
I had the issue when I turned off "enable always on mobile data"...turning it back on stopped the resets.

Probably just a kernel panic. I would not worry about it too much. It's happened to me on my Hero, and on my Evo.
For comparison purposes, how often does OS X Kernel Panic? How often does Windows BSOD?
Android is rather new technology in comparison. Yes, it runs Linux, which is rather mature at this point, but it's built with a lot of new technology, which may not be as mature as the stock kernel itself.
/two cents.

It reset about 8-10 times in less than 2 hours. More than half of that time the phone was in my pocket and not in use. I hardly got a signal inside of Walmart so it's not like I was using it that much in there.
I have set the data to be always on and hopefully this will help...
I appreciate all the help guys!

I had the same exact thing happen to me beginning this past weekend. It was driving me insane since it was rebooting every 30 minutes or so. I noticed it started happening more so when I did not have good signal. In any case I came to the conclusion it was all the tinkering (root part 1 and custom ROM) I've done with the phone so I wiped it last night and started from scratch (root part 1 and 2 and custom ROM). No reboots yet, but seeing your post concerns me since it's not the first post I've read regarding this issue. I'll keep you posted if mine keeps doing it. I really hope it's not a real issue, getting a replacement does not seem like it will be an easy process at the moment with them constantly selling out.

Thanks for the input. Your concern about the difficulty in getting a replaced unit due to them selling out is EXACTLY why I'm trying to figure out if this is a software glitch.
I'm also glad you pointed out that it tended to happen when the signal was ****ty. Last night I enabled the data always on (it was on by default and I turned it off earlier in the weekend) and I haven't had a reset yet this morning. Of course I've also been in good coverage areas. When it kept resetting like mad last night it was inside of Wal-Mart, and they have some serious shielding on their building or something since I rarely get a full or even half signal in there regardless of carrier or phone in past experience. A lot of friends on Altell/Verizon beg to differ with me though.
I'm thinking if they're connected, the fact that a weak data signal contributes to the device rebooting is really odd; the only time I can think of why a phone should reboot on its own is the OS crashes (or some app takes up ALL the available RAM, freezing it, then crashing it) or it overheats (but would seem to turn off rather than reboot). I had a BB Curve that did this at one point so I had to clear the cache all the time.
Edit:
Actually, I realized when it started to happen it was at work where I have excellent reception. Hmmm... well at least it hasn't reset on its own this morning so far (so far meaning 30 minutes).

Well for what it's worth, mine was also doing it in good signal areas as well. It just seemed a lot more pronounced when I was getting bad signal. Anywho I reread your original post that you are running stock software so let's see if it keeps occuring for both of us regardless of the differences in software we are running. I also still have "Enable data always on" off.

Sounds like a plan. Still no problems so far with data always on.
FWIW I also did the battery trick by switching the phone to CDMA auto from GSM auto. Supposedly you have to do it everytime you boot your phone, and it's supposed to help with battery life. Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601
It has to have something to do with turning off always on mobile data. It goes away when it's on, but then comes back when you turn it off. I just did rooted and unlocked nand protection on my phone last night and turned off always on mobile data and haven't had any reboots yet. Then again, it took a little while for it to start resetting last time so we'll see I guess. Could just be some glitch in the software that putting a new rom on has fixed...

I had this happen to me while I was trying to talk on the phone and use google navigation at the same time while running the Overclocking widget to throttle my cpu to 285mhz when the screen was off. Whenever I turned off the screen my phone would reboot.
My guess is that there some issue there where the cpu cant keep up with the heavy usage, locks up and forces a reboot...
I've since gotten rid of the OC widget, rooted my phone and installed a custom rom. I've not had it happen since, of course I havent tried talking and using google nav yet.
I've also noticed that advanced task killer caused the htc sense launcher to reboot (force killed) every once in a while... I've gotten rid of that too...
happend to me while talking on the phone twice, it was weird i could hear him still talking the entire time it was rebooting, up untill the OS actually launched...Im gunna try and kill set cpu, how many other people have this running while its rebooting???

Alright un-installed setcpu and it still resets. I'm now trying to shim my battery to see if its a loose connection. I gotta figure this out its driving me crazy...

I remember on my kaiser this started hapinin and it was a bad nand flash, but I'm running stock with unrevoked... so if anyone has any ideas I'm wide open.

Wow dude I'm sorry to hear you're having that much trouble. I'm on step 2 of part 2 of Toast's root method but running into major issues. Since I did step 1 (and before that I enabled data always on again) I haven't had a reset issue.
For the record, my Hardware version 2.
Do you guys think this is a widespread or isolated issue? I'm surprised it hasn't happened more or less, in other words I figured there would be either a lot or hardly any comments about it. This medium sized number is interesting.
Ok, so like...two days ago, I followed qbkings video on how to root & clockworkmod an epic with EI22, well it worked. I got recovery working A ok and played around with some roms and stuff. They all worked for the most part, but after rebooting my phone, the SAMSUNG loading screen wouldnt fade away, realizing it had been soft bricked. I tried recoveries but they didnt work. tried tutorial after tutorial after tutoria, but no luck. When trying the Odin unroot method It'd always be stuck on like a factory. file, and keep getting the phone - ! - computer error afterwards. Ive tried looking around the forums and such, but no go. I really need help with this.

I think you were better off leaving your phone alone. If following instructions is difficult, than that should have been your first clue. Id post a link to help you, but you have already read and tried it, and even that didn't work........time for you to buy an iphone I guess.

Try pulling the battery and sd card, let sit for an hour with usb unplugged, then connect to usb cable with odin running and try to boot into download mode.
If it goes, pop the battery in and load up ei22 or another odinable tar along with the recovery in qbkings videos. Make sure only reboot is checked in odin.
If not, go back and try every step in the sticky. I doubt that you have a problem that has not been experienced already.

Sometimes the truth hurts.
I tend to agree with that sentiment, nothing against you OP, but there are some that gravitate to technology and feel at home, and then there are some that gravitate and lack the necessary skills for something like this.
This is a very straight-forward task, especially with all of qbking's hard work in making those very easy to follow videos, and other's time typing out tutorials, so I really fail to see how most have so much trouble making it work. Maybe they belong in the latter analysis.

With the soft brick you might have been able to save it. It happened to my brothers phone and what I did to fix it was wipe everything, factory reset
Then flash stock rom. Wipe everything again
Then flash stock kernel
Wipe everything again
Then it was perfect.
If you had already been flashing roms.and such then your problem wasn't following directions.
You just might have flashed a rom without a supported kernal. Causing bootloop
As far as where you are now.. maybe tell then you dropped it and it never turned back on?
I don't think they can ever find out you rooted it if it never turns on again lol

Don't use the broken screen as the reason or they will charge you around $100. Just try and make sure you get across the point that its the faulty phone (even if it isn't) and make sure you have an accurate believable story on how it got bricked. If you mention anything about messing with root or anything similar they won't replace it.
True. But on another note you can't say much. Only other thing I can think of is saying maybe you tried updating the device and it died

today tried to restore one of my cm7 kang back ups from recovery and the phone died. i think what happened is i got mixed up with the back ups and i must have restored the gingerbread cm10 first and without realiszing it flashed the cm7 with a froyo kernal and bang we have a dead phone. it simply wouldnt boot past the google lettering and so when i got home i decided to flash a full sbf and start from scratch however when i tired i got the dreaded battery low error so i followed this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026
and it worked but rsd lite didnt show my phone. there was simply nothing there when i started it. all very annoying so i uninstalled everything and by the time i started again i got the message battery low.
so my question is can mcgyver work if the battery is actually really low say 10-20 per cent or less?
is it worth buying a new fully charged battery and using that?
why wouldnt rsd lite recognize my phone?
is there anyway to charge the battery when it is like this?
nb. i am running windows 7 sp1 and have installed the latest drivers and rsd lite am my phone is a moto defy m525 red lense.
all very annoying and in five years of rooting and flashing i have never been in a situation where i couldnt recover it. too be honest i have been here before with the defy but i had a spare battery and a proper wall charger and so that was problem solved but i dont own them anymore and i am now not sure/ cant remember if a simple full battery will help hence the questions.
In theory it should work. You are supplying the terminals with the intended 5V and a ground.
However it is recommended to charge your battery, use an external battery charger and then flash the SBF. Its hell of a risk trying to flash SBF with low battery. The phone may actually brick with no way to restore it.
it is strange but using the mcgyver method i can get the bootloader ready to program i simply cant get rsd lite to see my phone and neither does windows. there are loads of posts and threads on this but not many (none actually when the situation i am is mentioned) offer a solution.
so i have ordered a new battery which will hopefully arrive tomorrow and i will see how we get on from there.

doh!
amazing i simply used another cable and usb port and then i had to unplug it and plug it again and drivers started to be installed. (i had already installed motos drivers but hey windows wanted more!).
i also went back to the older 4.9 version of rsd lite. it has been a long long time since i have had to do this. installing nordic and will try and install one of my other back ups. all should be well very soon fingers crossed.
looks like the spare battery i bought will be going back then. oh well.
cheers mate your post prompted me to try again and just tinker and it worked so appreciate that.
edit: seems a bit stuck and i am now a little unsure what to do. the android bootscreen is stuck and rsd lite is saying maually power up this phone. i am a little concerned because it is still saying in process even though it has flashed the sbf. i have tried turning it off and nothing happens. it looks like i am actually going to have to unplug the cables remove the mgyver wires and take out the battery and boot it.
bollox. it is dead again so i have to start again. trying a different sbf this time. not sure what happened there. maybe i was too impatient?
honestly not sure what is happening here. i have tried a standard blurred sbf 2.2 and the phone is now stuck on the m animation and rsd lite iks omce again saying manually start this phone. what in the world do i do next?
ah god i will have to do some more reading because it is ****ed. i now have a white light and black screen. rsd lite just remained stuck at 100 per cent in process and manually boot your phone. have tried it three times and that is all i get. not sure if it is because i am flashing froyo sbfs when i have had a 2.3 kernal on the device? it is why i have avoided flashing them in the first place and the first time i ever do bang i get a bricked phone when i try to restore it back to cm7. the phone came with 2.1 so should i be flashing them?
very boring and very very annoying.
getting quite tired of this little game and am on the brink of buying another phone.
ok i have a red lense defy and after much reading i have realised that i must be flashing the wrong sbfs now call me stupid but i actually am very confused about which one i need to flash.
i started on 2.1 originally then i flashed 2.2 and then stuck cm7 on the phone with a froyo kernal. however when i upgraded to cm10 i tried the 2.3 kernal.
so with this background in mind will this work???
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1595013
can i follow this to flash the sbf and get root?
or is there another sbf i need to flash. all i need to be able to do is root the phone and install cwm and then i can flash one of my back ups (properly this time).

Thats for BL7.. Some Defy+ with 2.3.6 were BL7. You definitely don't need to flash it..
Just flash the last SBF that worked for you..

yes mate i did the last sbf i flashed over a year ago was nordic and i got the error as listed above. have no idea what i am doing wrong but i must be doing something. trouble is the new battery has arrived and i have already tried a new sbf and still getting the same problem... manually need to reboot the phone.
bit worrying because obviously i will only have a certain number of tries before this new battery dies on me.
edit: absolutely annoying. part of the problem with the guides on here are that they are mostly incomplete. they dont actually tell you everything you need to do. take for instance this the guide for unbricking
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828639
it is totally useless because what he fails to mention is that
to boot into stock recovery you need to hold down the volume button when you power on the phone and you will get a droid with an exclamation mark and then you need to hold down both the volume up and down buttons which after a few seconds will take you to stock recovery. then you can wipe cache etc and the phone will boot. i found this out here (notice how people are telling the guy to simply flash a new sbf!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608812
the mad thing is if i had found that simple post just above and knew about the up and down volume buttons i would have fixed the defy on the very first try. that is what is so annoying about this situation.
ok
red lense defy.
long story short i flashed one of the bl7 defy plus gingerbread sbfs.
so i have gone through the root procedure by installing the rooted sbf in rsd lite and then i can install 2nd init 2.0.3 and can get a custom recovery installed.
but every time i try to install cm7.2 euro skank it reverts back to the bootloader. here is what i have done twice in recovery with the exact same result.
wipe cache, data, dalvik and battery stats/ flash cm7 froyo kernal/ then flash the rom/ then flash gapps and then wipe again and then reboot.
when the phone starts again i am once again back to the bootloader and i have to start all over again.
so a very simple question from the position i am in what exactly do i need to do to get cm7 running on the phone.
double post but there are worse crimes!
ok so i have realised that i am stuck on the gingerbread kernal and that any froyo based rom is not gonna work.
wow how did i end up here! bloody hell that is what happens when you start getting ****ed off with the phone not doing what you think it should. anyways it is done now and i have cm7 all up and running and have even been able to make a back up so that if anything happens in the future when i am experimenting then i have a decent base from which to start. everything is working including the camera data wifi calls and well everything except...
i have one all rather serious problem that i really need to get sorted (this is it if i can fix this then i can leave the phone alone).
my battery is not recognized. now the phone runs on the battery which is a big step up from before where i was literally having to leave it plugged in just to keep it on. but the battery icon at the top is displaying a question markn and i dont know if it is charging or not. i also have no idea how much battery is left.
i have flashed both the defy red lense ics battery zip and the defy plus battery fix and i wiped cache dalvik and battery stats before i flashed them and the cache after but neither of these worked.
anyone actually care to help out here. what do i need to do to get my battery recognized? seriously if you know then please share because i have wasted a day and a half on this and through sheer frustration dug myself into a huge hole and it took ages to climb out.
all i am asking for is a bit of guidance from someone who actually knows what they are talking about. if that sounds like you do me a favour and simply tell me what i should do because i am now totally and utterly stumped.
cheers.

First of all Stop whining about the guides being incomplete. They have helped a lot of people before you and are still helping.. If you mean every post should mention trivial stuff like booting into recovery and wiping data then just imagine the redundancy of the stuff.
If only you were patient enough to read before reacting. Defy Beginner's guide clearly mention 'bout booting into recovery & bootloader so its your folly for not collecting the info before processing..

whining! i didnt think i was whining although i can get annoyed and sometimes my frustration is vented without thinking. i accept that the phone being where it is is indeed my fault. in fact if i had just left it alone then it would have been running as well as it ever did. i am also a great advocate of the developers who spend there time providing us roms and tools for us to use and i can say hand on heart i appreciate the fine work they do often for free. i am also an avid reader of the guides being a simple bod with very little knowledge of flashing hacking and what not and they have saved my bacon more times than i care to remember over the last four or five years. and so you are spot on the guides help a lot... not just me but many before me and most likely many after and give us mere mortals the chance to stay current with firmware long after the manufacturer has abandoned the phone. so while i may have been complaining rather angrily i was not whining.
the fact is that guide is incomplete. not only is it incomplete but it is the one that is linked to on the wiki as the guide to follow on how to unbrick your phone.
if you are like me a tinkerer who every once in a while likes to try out a new rom and who doesnt know the every inner workings of the procedures and who needs to follow instructions then i think the least you can expect is for the definitive guide to be correct! i mean that isnt too much to ask for is it.
so yes i do expect them to list every basic important step one must follow to fix the phone because that is what instructions do they guide people who dont know what they are doing. that is there sole purpose and if they dont do that job then they should either be edited so they do or deleted.
and yes yesterday i was very annoyed at the fact that the guide i was following does not actually tell you exactly what one should do and i can promise you if it had of done then i would not be in the position i am in it is as simple as that. i mean you cant seriously expect people to think oh right these are the instructions for unbricking the phone but i bet you they aint right so i had better read some more instructions for the same thing... and hey they might not be complete as well so i had better read yet another set just in case. leave it out will you.
at the end of the day it doesnt matter and at the risk of repeating myself i know that if i had left well alone the phone would be fine so ultimately i have no one else to blame but myself. if i had been a little more patient and less stressed wondering why the phone wouldnt boot after what appeared to be a successful flash then i would have got there in the end without being stuck on a gingerbread kernal.

well if you had read through this thread then you may have seen i have wasted a day and a half on quite a lot of reading as it goes. you may have also seen that i have flashed 2 battery fixes and that they havent helped. so i am wondering if you know what else i could do to fix the problem? if you do and you dont mind telling me then i would be grateful. if you dont then no big deal... i will read through a few more threads and see if i cant get to the bottom of it.
EDIT: I have reread what i wrote and i take that back the guide is far from useless in fact it is excellent and i mean that. in every other way it is spot on and is the de facto guide to sorting yourself out of a hole. but it does miss out some vital information that (i think at least) really should be there. still water under the bridge and all that. we are were we are and one must move on. bottom line it is only a phone and if it comes to it i will buy another. the only reason i havent actually bought another so far is the buld quality and form factor of the defy is still yet to be bettered. but maybe it is a sign a message from above telling me to move on to pastures new.... although i would still like to fix the battery issue.
ok it is fixed. as i was writing this reply i installed the white rabbit rom (which i read included red lense battery fixes). true to its word there are five downloadable files. i got four (one woudnt download) and rebooted the system and hey presto.
well what a difference a day and a decent nights kip make. and colour me impressed. this rom is a work of genius. i see it is based on euro kangs cm7 effort with a few nice (well actually loads) extras thrown in for good measure. have to say i am really liking it. calls data wifi camera and battery all work and it looks and feels swift and very polished.
so all is well that ends well. and what a journey. man all i wanted to do was restore cm7 from my back ups. flashing the gingerbread based cm10 before i did it i reckon screwed me and i didnt realise what i had done until after when it wouldnt boot. however xda saved the day as it always does (even if it did take me quite a lot time to get there this time round). i may even write a mini guide but then either no one would bother reading it or i would get loads of people whining at me telling me how it aint right so i think i will avoid that little task and leave it to people more brave and knowledgeable than i.
cheers all for the help in this thread, the time taken by others to write stuff down and the people who provide us with some great software for our ageing but still great phone.

if you need help mate then a little bit more info is gonna be required.
i will say this that i havent quite fixed it completely. i have the rom running sweet as a pie and the phone will work away from a power source but the battery percent/ icon remains locked at 100 per cent so i have no way of knowing if the phone is charging. when i plug it in to my laptop it says usb connected but again it doesnt list it as charging. so i have no way of knowing if the battery is actually getting charged or how much is really left.
i am also far from an expert more a bumbling old timer who rarely posts here unless desperate.
bear all that in mind and i will do all i can to help (provided you specifically say what you want help with)
edit: lmao... i couldnt have picked a worse sbf to flash. amazing. i have been so so careful in all the time i have owned this phone (over a year i reckon now) and i may have finally actually broken it.
i aint even certain i can charge the battery and once it runs down it will simply die. obviously there is hope that someone will come up with a downgrade method at some point in the future but for the time being i think the phone is ****ed.
i will try ics tomorrow and see if i can get any joy there but i think the only way i can now use the phone is to buy an external battery charger. funny really i used to own both a spare battery and a charger for this very reason and yet i sold them when i got rid of the old defy. so i am gonna have to buy one off ebay tomorrow and use it that way. at least then i will be able to use the phone.

You're on BL7 now and there's a reason people advise to avoid it. Most of the fixes and scripts doesn't work with BL7 including the battery fixes.
I'd suggest you to go for Quarx's build for GB kernel (along with the battery fix), Randomly flashing ROMs and fixes won't help.
Moreover, I strongly recommend you to search and read carefully. You're not the first one to face the problem, and there's a solution. Even if you waste(?) a couple of days reading 'bout it, it won't kill your phone, but if you do something out of desperation it might.

i take it you mean this like in retrospect? of course you are right a deep breath and a walk does wonders for a fuddled head and is far better than simply rushing into the next desperate attempt to repair. however it is easy to say this after the event yes!
the battery wont charge and if i flash another rom it gives me the big battery icon with question mark so i am once again stuck in a corner with no where to go. basically it is ****ed because none of the battery fixes work. the battery works when there is power in it but it just wont charge when in the phone. because the battery ran down last night the only way i can use my phone at the moment is tethered to the mcgyver trick.
so the plan is to buy a separate charger and use that to charge the battery. then i reckon i should be at least able use the phone (although this yet to be tested).
amazing seriously amazing. a year of owning this phone a year of flashing and hacking and being ultra conservative and then all it takes is a few minutes of madness and it is royally screwed. the crying shame about it is that i have installed the best rom i have ever seen in the white rabbit and if the external charger doesnt work i wont get to play with it! still live and learn.
edit: by the way do you know if the mcgyver trick actually charges the battery?

The battery fixes replace your battd.bin binary file which stores the info about the battery. Surprisingly there isn't a single binary that work with each phone, it acts weirdly and not sure what fix will work for a particular phone.. I again suggest you, every battery fix you find. You're not the first one to face the problem and its been sorted for many..
Mcgyver just supply the device with intended charge as the battery does. It doesn't charge the battery.
Don't know if you tried this one.

i have tried it mate. i have also tired the ics defy red lense and the white rabbit rom had four of them available to download. none of them have worked. basically as it is now the phone will not stay on without the mcgyver leads and the battery wont charge. i have flashed 6 different battery fixes.
edit: it is strange once i have given it a blast on mcgyver for an hour or so i can then use the phone normally. however the battery is locked at 100 per cent and there is no indication it is charging when a usb lead is plugged in. seriously i have tried 6 of the fixes and none have actually worked.
if you are saying there is a fix for this then i would love to know what it is because i havent found one yet.
edit again!!!: ok this is strange because now when i plug it in to a usb lead the green light appears as if it was charging. very very strange this. i mean like really ****ing weird.
final edit: ok i am officially giving up. it has beaten me and for the first time ever i have got myself into a situation that i cant get out of. who would have thought a simple battery would be the cause of so much ****ing grief. anyway. for total clarity.
i am now running white rabbit rom runs great highly recommended and way quicker than the cm10 efforts that are being worked on at the moment. i have tried 6 battery fixes. none work. i am sometimes able to use the phone without being connected to the mcgyver leads but the battery remains locked at 100 per cent. other times the phone dies and the only way to boot it again is the mcgyver leads. if i do that then battery may change to say 25 per cent or even 75 per cent. basically it is all over the shot. i have tried to install another rom and this leads to the exact same thing. if i turn it on without the mcgyver leads i get the battery error. sometimes when connected to the usb port the phone has the led green light like it is charging then other times it doesnt. it is basically well and truly ****ed up.
so i am giving up. i have wasted quite enough time on a phone i have been thinking of changing as it is. i am gonna buy a sensation as a short term replacement. not as nice as the defy form wise but far faster and with a decent modding community so it will do for now. i will return here every now and then to see if someone comes up with a way to downgrade the bl7 but until that happens the phone is gonna gather dust in my drawer.
i think this thread serves as decent guide as to what shouldnt be done if you want to unbrick your phone (and also includes a few little things that may be missing elsewhere) so hopefully someone can learn from it. cheers all and see you later.
ok well this is the end of this thread (unless i find a proper working solution).
i was unable to charge the phone unless i used the mcyver trick. basically the only way it would accept a charge was if the mcgyver leads were connected. however the battery would charge once the mcgyver leads were in place but stays locked at 100 per cent no matter what i do. it may be the rom i am using but every time i tried another i got the battery error.
i have now bought an external battery charger and spare battery. it works a treat. i simply use the charger to charge one battery and use the other battery to power the phone. when the battery dies i simply switch them around and use the phone as normal.
this way i am no longer having to boot the phone using mcgyver and the only thing i am missing is the ability to charge the battery internally or tell how much battery life is actually left.
so all told all is well that sort of ends well. at least i can carry on using the defy. i was looking at buying another phone but they are all either too big or too slippy/ fragile in the hand. the only one i would like to buy is the orange san diego but there is no root and even worse there is no sim unlock. so for the time being i will stick with the nearly indestructible defy and hope that moto see sense and release a four inch, 8mp onboard camera and better screen carbon copy. fingers crossed.
Hi. I'm new here and first, want to say hello. I've been on iPhones for many years. Finally got bored and crossed over to the "Dark Side" lol.
Second....I need help!!! lol or just some good old advice. I've searched and searched but can't really find a definitive answer. Too much conflicting info out there. One thing I did learn is that this forum is thee best so here I am!
I successfully rooted my i747 Galaxy S3 (Rogers). The trouble arose when I tried to install a Custom ROM. I kept getting errors, and after a bunch of research, I read that I should update my CWM. I did and that's when the trouble started. It went into a loop. It would just stay on a black screen. I can't get into Recovery mode or anything else for that matter. It will not power up in any way. It will now show the charging indicator light when it's charging. It's as dead as my ex-wife in the sack . Obviously I've bricked it. I've learned that a jtag repair would fix it....and have since been told by an android buddy that it won't. Any advice or info would be appreciated!
The phone was on 4.1.1 and it's the Rogers i747 model (same as AT&T)
P.S, Rooting on a Mac sucks! I'm thankful that I had a PC at home too! Not that turned out too good
Update...as per Tech Support at Rogers, I removed the battery and plugged it in. The red indicator light came on. But it does not stay on and it goes out shortly after, battery in or not. Thought one more piece of info may help someone figuring this out.
Charge it as much as you can, search for the return to stock thread on here (make sure you get the one for your carrier), do that and if it isn't working after that, then you'll probably have to get it replaced.

I appreciate the reply but I can't connect to the phone at all. Couldn't return it to stock even if I wanted to.

Once it's charged, are you able to get in download mode? If so, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Odin can bring you back up.
If your pc doesn't recognize it, reboot it (pc). Try a different cable/usb port. Reinstalling the drivers is an option too.

It won't charge at all. Left it overnight and nada. I'll try again, but highly unlikely that it will. I also tried different ports as well as different computers to connect to. My only concern is that I take it back and Samsung discovers that it's been messed with. Oh well, it's only money

Could say that you tried to update with kies and that's what you got.. Works like a charm usually
In my stupidity I've hard bricked not one but TWO AT&T GS3's same thing black screened and nothing else. I doubt very seriously you'll get it to charge. Here's the good news I'm assuming it's still under warranty and if it is when you take it to the warranty store at AT&T they will try two batteries to see if it boots and when it doesn't you'll get a new phone. You don't have to tell them nothing. As far as you know you shut it down to charge when you went to bed and it wouldn't boot in the morning.
Worked for me needless to say I'm WAAAAAY more carefull and spend a lot of time here reading and double and triple checking everything!

Not to make you sound stupid, there are no such things as stupid questions here at least I've learned that while enjoy my stay here at xda, but did you accidentally flash an international ROM? This sounds like a case of it.
The first phone I hard bricked I'm sure that's what I did. It became a beautiful paper weight. Not sure what happened the second time I had got off work late and instead of going to bed I was tinkering with my phone. I don't really know what happened. Careless and not reading, not making sure of what I was doing. I learned the hard way and I spend a lot more time studying and staying with the AT&T forums for my phone.
I have to admit I've really had fun here learning.

I have a note 2 through verizon. I have not rooted because unfortunately due to an app that is required for my company I cannot. A lot of detail there. But my issue is that all of a sudden my phone will not charge if it is on. Works perfectly if it is off. I have not had any updates for 3 weeks or changes to my phone besides a couple of apps that have updates. Sports Score, Tune in radio and appy geek. I wouldn't think any of those would do anything since I don't see in their permissions they would have any reason to change the charging port. Because of the app that is required for work I cannot get root access. I have read through most of the threads on other charging issues but they have all had rooted or flashed their ROMs along with other things that are not the same like their phone won't charge at all. I have removed the battery and let it sit for a few minutes (about 5) and still the same thing. This wouldn't be a big issue except turning my phone off when I am on call most of the time is not the greatest option.

Gone through the chargers, forgot to put that in previous post. I guess I will go ahead with the factory reset was hoping to avoid that but having a phone charging when powered on is worth having to reset everything back up on the phone. Will update once I am able to run the reset process

will what ended up fixing it was I was simply charging it late last night and turned it on when it was charging. It ended up just starting working again when it turned on and continued charging. Again today at work when I plugged it in at my desk it started charging just fine again. Thanks though really glad I didn't have to do the factory reset.

Use the older charger such as samsung's A1
Or just buy a CHARGING DOCK
