Horizontal Homescreen - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Sorry if it has been discussed already.. will horizontal homescreen be supported in future by the stock firmware?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

No one knows except for Google, but I doubt it.
The current stock launcher does actually support landscape, but only for tablets or with a dock/physical keyboard/hdmi that forces landscape. The launcher code includes a few checks specifically for large screens to enable rotation (and temporarily lock it in a few case).
Keep your eyes open though, a landscape supporting launcher based on ICS will come soon enough.

Landscape as default orientation?

Is there some kind of cvar/mod/hack/.. to change the default orientation from portait to landscape?
In AOSP only ofc.
no ideas about that? :/
You could try putting your phone into landscape then turning orientation off.
That is the only easy way I know of to keep it that way, if you use a widget then you can easily turn it back on when you want to change back.
it goes back to porttrait immediately when disabling auto-rotate. (via a homescreen widget)
any further ideas?
shouldnt there be a way to do so since the motorola droid has everything in landscape when hw-keyboard is open?
can some dev please give his opinion on this please?
just wanted to add that after trying landscape mode for a while, I think it would be annoying as the default or only layout option since it requires two hands pretty much for even the most simple use.
portrait allows thumb (if you're talented) or index finger (if you're flexible) single handed tapping usage.
i prefer landscape mode in all situations. i always hold my hero sideways but dont want to wait like 2 sec for it to turn around.
so again, is there a way for doing this?

since the silence here is suggesting that no developers are going to (or are able to) help you out, I suggest you try playing with the slide rom that has sense rotation enabled.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666640
it's not perfect, cant' record video, some issues that eventually always make me want to switch back (notably if you use exchange the contact list doesn't join contacts from exchagne email, gmail email, and active directory email... but it should and does in non-slide roms).
But it has the fastest launcher screen rotation of any hero rom I've used, faster than vanilla + launcherpro and far more stable in how it senses screen rotation. it's a sense rom that is actually designed to work as well landscape as portrait.
it doesn't rotate instantly, but it's noticeably faster turning (for me using only it's built in array of sense widgets) if you want to use horizontal layout. And it stays in place better - you know how annoying it is when launcherpro has rotation enabled and you move your phone a bit and suddenly it's redrawing sideways for the next 6 seconds... well I haven't found that to be much of an issue in that slide rom.
There are still a couple of parts that dumbly don't rotate, or at least not in the default settings I tried (contacts for example and settings are I think still portrait - stupid mistakes on HTC's part).
If you nandroid first or bart first if you use an ext partition then you have no worries in flashing the above rom to at least give it a try.
This is one area where the new iphone seems to win out I'm afraid - it's launcher screen rotation is really nice, animated, quick, stable and very useful.
Dammit LoL
good luck, post your findings please!
thank you for your effort but that rom you suggested does not meet my requirements and i cant say that i like the modified rosie that is used here. :/

that's fair
At least I tried
If an actual rom developer had a solution for you it would be more interesting!
have you considered talking to one of the 3rd party launcher developers? such as the guy who makes launcherpro, the adw guy(s), and so on?
Maybe that is where your solution lies?
That combined with maybe talking to one of the cyanogenmod developers themselves (who aren't hero-specific, you'd have to google their home website)?
Cyanogenmod might be able to add an option for 90 degree rotation only (with no zero degree switching). or at least show you how to change it yourself.
Good luck!

Landscape view for homescreen? (TouchWiz)

Anybody got an idea as to how to allow the home screen to be in landscape mode?
Yes, like LauncherPro and other launchers - but I have the ICS theme (by Overstew) and I like my TouchWiz homescreen.
Sometimes I wonder how a feature like this (especially on this half phone half tablet beauty) gets overlooked by Samsung.
Unfortunately its not possible on the version that comes with the phone as far as I know. I think there MAY be a custom version that does but I haven't seen it myself

Icon Grid To 5x5

For the last two years I have been using ADW Launcher. When it came out at the end of 2010 I paid for ADW_EX. It has been great for me. I have tried to use the TouchWiz on the S3 but there have been two main things that kept me from using it regularly. One was fixed (by an answer in another forum).
The one that was fixed was the ability to have shortcuts to individual files on my home screen. In ADW I was able to create a shortcut with Astro File Manager. For some reason Astro does not have a way to do this with TouchWiz. Then someone pointed out that a long press on a file in ES File Manager would create a shortcut. I use a lot of individual files and that feature was great.
Now the last deal breaker for me is the lack of a 5x5 icon grid. Again, in ADW you can have a choice of icon numbers both horizontally and vertically. While 6 or 7 is too much, I like the choice. 4x4 with that gigantic screen indicator is useless. I use a couple of big widgets on my main screen and there is no room left for the important icons.
Now for the question. Is there any way to create a 5x5 icon grid on stock unrooted touchwiz?
From my point of view, Samsung is copying Apple by limiting the choices and configurability. If we could choose our icons and how they act, it would be a lot less like Apple. Personally, when I try an Apple device, I get frustrated because of the lack of control I have. I don't like someone else making my choices. One last part of my rant: I recently tried Windows 8 on a laptop. It looks like everyone is trying to copy Apple.
All this is because the motion scrolling features and eyeball sensor are TouchWiz only. I would like to move my phone to move icons around. I would like to keep the screen on time short to save battery but still be able to have it stay on when I am reading a long web page.
I'm pretty sure all the TW features stick around even if you use a different launcher. I know smart stay and tap to top work on Nova and those are the only ones I use.
Edit: all the motion features still work on other launchers. I just went through them all. Liberate yourself. I use Nova.
Alternatively, if you are rooted you can find a modded stock launcher. Or even flash a more heavily modded rom. This is where Android shines anyway. Not because of what the manufacturers allow, but what open source allows!

Dual docks in twa_priv's CM10 w/ STG7 enhancements ROM

I apologize if this question is old hat. I really did try searching the forums for it in advance. Perhaps I was formulating the search in such poorly. I'm relatively unfamiliar with Android terminology.
Anyway, so I have a KF running the ROM mentioned in the title, the CM10 w/ STG7 improvements by twa_priv. Latest iteration. My first Android ROM for the KF, though, was "Jandycane." I switched off of it because A. it couldn't run Chrome and B. my device had absolutely abysmal battery life while using it. But Jandycane's Trebuchet launcher had an option that allowed you to have an app dock on both sides of the home screen simultaneously. It also adjusted far better to switching between portrait & landscape.
Does anyone know the "mode" I'm talking about? Or if there's some way to enable it on other ROMs besides JC? Is there a way to independently install a version of Trebuchet within this mod that allows for dual docks? I'd really like to stick with the ROM I'm on except for this one feature.
I don't know if there is a way to have two app docks. I know you can't have the phone app dock (bottom center) and tablet app dock (upper right) together obviously. If you want easy access to your app dock, though, I would recommend using one of the "gestures" that you can use. It is located in the settings under Launcher, and is the last row. I don't have the button for the app dock enabled because I use the swipe down gesture to control opening up my apps.
As far as switching between portrait and landscape, if you have Auto-rotate screen enabled, it should work pretty well. It does lag a little bit, but I don't think there's anyway to get around that. You might try the auto rotation app featured at this website: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nexus-7/44113-how-get-auto-rotation-nexus-7-home-screen-app.html but I don't know how well it works, so no guarantees.
oh, and I also am running twa_priv's ROM...

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid it's not about access; it's just about having the "dual docks" option Jandycane has, combined with the stability and flexibility of twa_priv's build.

Lag hasn't been the problem at all. What I was trying to get at is, the way icons rotate with the "dual docks" option makes a lot of sense. The top and bottom in portrait become the left and right in landscape, while the center rows & columns remain in the same positions they would have been otherwise. Things which are situated properly in landscape also look good in portrait, and vice versa. Without dual docks, rotating the icons basically behaves the same way the iPad does; if you set it up in portrait, landscape will look terrible. And vice versa.

How would you change Samsung's Touchwiz UI for your Note 2?

I'm curious to know what you'd change in the latest version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI for the Note 2. If you could design the next version, what would you add, remove, or tweak? I'm curious to see what the fans, and non-fans, would change.
For me, I would definitely want more functionality from the lock screen in the next revision. Having 5.5' of real screen estate means a lot of space for us to add extra info such as email/message content, info of last dialled/received call, more access to favourite apps, etc. I'd also like to be able to pull down the notification centre in the lock screen and be able to access the relevant notification from there. Lastly, I think the stock icons could go for a revision to give a more high-tech futuristic feel instead of the much cartoonish appearance it has now.
I'd make it look like Apex and just as customizable!
Done.
I would like a 5x5 or 4x5 grid size on the home screen,
Auto correct on the keyboard,
Resizable widgets (like we had on touchwiz 4.0),
Better Facebook integration,
And a few more s pen features
Cheers
Corey

I know I've probably said this before in another thread, but I really think that TouchWiz (and I mean the whole framework, not just the home launcher) on the Note 2 should be, and should have been from the get go, a hybrid ROM with PAD and PAL (per-app density and per-app layout) options baked right in. I mean, let's face it, some UI layouts of certain apps are just simply better and easier to use than others. YouTube and Gmail, for examples, are simply better experiences in a tablet layout.
Another thing that would have been nice to have would be capacitive buttons that respond to the SPen, instead of having to use gestures (just a minor niggle though).
Hello,
I would love to see a scrollable favorites contact widget with direct dial function (like HTC has.. )
I would lose the freaking gingerbread theme is all the Samsung phones....touchwiz and the whole framework is nice but looks totally dated to 3 years ago.

Which is exactly what you would expect.
If my phone was locked, I wouldn't want someone to be able to pick it up and read my notifications without having to enter the PIN/password etc.

A customizable lock screen would be nice, also would love it if I could turn on the screen with voice command.

New UI for E-mail
The black UI on the e-mail is shocking. Can never read e-mails outside. THis should change to white, or atleast have the option to change to white.
I would make it able to lock in reverse portrait mode.

I agree. Tried several others, but Apex is easy to use and very customizable. If it were like this most would never look to change to another launcher.

They should get rid of that ridiculous amount space berween the dock and the app shortcuts. I know theres a mod but they should change that. And ofcourse incread grid size especially with the columns so we can add more folders or apps in a single row. Also add the ability to be able to add folders within the app drawer or at the least allow to reorganize the apps to our liking. Also it would be nice if we could have the option to choose the folder icon background.

I like the TW UI, it's a lot easier and simpler than other branded UI's. Just some things,
1- Bigger grid size options, I mean, up to 8x8.
2- Enabling custom icons.
3- Scrollable dock.
4- Re-sizable icons, including dock.
5- Vertical menu in App drawer (I am not talking about the list view)
6- Not a must, but it'd be cool if they could allow a custom background for App drawer. I kinda like it and miss it from bloated Go Ex.

I would definitely want a Pop Up Dialer which should be designed for use with the s pen! and more pop up optimizations like a pop up calculator and such.
Pop ups and multi windows are different in this case !
