I'm not referring to the volume rocker ghost button issue. Is the phone loud enough and can people hear you? Do you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves or are people asking you to repeat yourself? How is the media volume?
I had a chance to play with the Verizon 4g galaxy nexus today at the Samsung store in NYC. I thought the phone was great. However my Droid X call volume seems a lot louder than the Nexus.
The Samsung store is not a library to be sure. It is noisy, but it's not the loudest indoor environment either. For those of you who own the phone , how is the call volume and reception, while walking down a busy street or other loud environments compared to your last phone?

from what i've heard it's comparable to that of an AOSP(cyanogenmod) rom, which of course is "quieter" then a standard Sense-based phone. i'd say just root it a.s.a.p. and hopefully roms will start popping up with audio fixes.

Speakerphone is extremely quiet and alarms are barely audible, but in call volume and clarity seem to be very good though not as good as any of my Motorolas.
The speakerphone is pretty quiet (the GN speaker is pretty quiet, I expect that'll get fixed in third party ROMs soon), but the in call mic has been great for me. I usually have mine up about halfway and I haven't had any issues, even in loud areas.

I heard that the speaker volume is weak. At the Samsung store, the phone was only connected to wifi. I only tested the speaker volume since I couldn't use the phone. Isn't the phone's speaker a hardware issue?
When I first got my Droid X, I was disappointed in the speaker volume compared to my previous phone, which was the blackberry storm 2. The call volume and speakers were the only features of the blackberry storm that I missed from my switch.
To tell the truth, I haven't loved a phone since my palm 650/700p. At
The time it was released, it just seemed to do everything in it's class better than it's competitors of that time. I was not impressed nor troubled by the Storm. It was a good solid phone, just boring. I liked the Droid X because of the concept of an open platform and the possibilities it afforded.
The screen was hard to see on a sunny day. Speaker phone reception wasn't the best and photos came out grainy. I spent countless hours entertained by customizing my phone with roms and such.
The screen on the Nexus is an amazing up grade. I hope it holds up in sunlight. I don't think it would take much to beat the photo quality of the Droid X. Low call and media volume could be a deal breaker. At it's core a phone is supposed to be a good audio device!
I'm hoping that the Nexus can be a phone that I can love as much as I did my palm at it's peek.

Oh, oh. I still use my blackberry storm as an alarm clock because my Droid X volume isn't as loud. I'm beginning to think a rooted Samsung galaxy 2 with ice cream sandwich or the future galaxy 3 might be the better phone. Neither option exist right now anyway.

i've read a lot in this forum that Volume+ works just fine for increasing the speaker volume for rings, notifications and speakerphone. and no root is required as well.

What is Volume+? I just checked the Android market for Volume + and Volume Plus. The only app that was remotely close in name was Volume Control +. That program appears to function as a volume equalizer of some sort.

Well I returned my phone with a full refund.
The volume was so low on my GNex I could hardly hear YouTube videos/Music /Notifications so I returned it. Is this the same on all GNex? (Volume Bug was another reason for returning)
Long story short I regret returning it cause I loved ICS but the volume problems were enough to drive me crazy.
So my question - Is the volume low on your Gnex's ? I don't want to pick one up again if the volume truly is that low compared to other phones.

forget about GNexus.
have yourself actually come across any devices that have a speaker that is loud enough for you under crowd environment? (even my xoom doesn't provide volume loud enough). plus you have to check if the audio of that music/video is originally softer or louder. certain audio/video are slightly softer by default. hence its really hard to measure.
i find the GNexus is loud enough under quiet environment.
Yeah, it is a bit low compared to other phones. If that's a deal-breaker then that's unfortunate. Maybe along the line someone will make a custom kernel/rom that will boost the volume though so you should keep an eye out.

Thanks for the replies guys. Well I currently have an iPhone 4S which is perfect sound wise and so is my Dell Venue Pro. I can hear them both easy without a problem but I couldn't hear my Gnex when I was in the house talking to family. I may have had a faulty phone? Was well quiet. Considering the Galaxy Note right now but really want the Gnex again.
It is more quiet than my previous HTC Desire. But I love that it is not too loud that you are close to hearing the speakers cracking. I am not afraid to put the device in full volume anymore.
I found it way too low (as in I was close to returning it) but use Volume+ to boost it up to very respectable levels without distortion. Was happy with that then had Volume+ crash a couple of times so hoping for a proper patch (official or community) at some point.
Can't find the thread anymore, but some users with the same problem reported good results using Volume+. Think it was mainly the speaker volume when ringing that was an issue for him/her/them.
Might be worth a shot!

do bear in mind that the iphone and dell venue both have side loaded speakers. and primarily all new android phones has their speaker at the back of the phones. ny default, the audio is blasted away from you (if you are watching youtube). you need some sort of deflector to deflect the audio back to the front to make it louder.
for instant, if you are listening to music, and have the phone facing backward, i don't think you will have any big issues.

True, but sound on my old Galaxy S2 was good with the speaker on the back. (Sold it before picking up the Gnex) I'm Androidless at the moment.. so its between picking this back up or the Note.

i have not really tested the SGS2, so i can't comment much in that. primarily throughout all nexus i had, Nexus one, Nexus S and now Galaxy Nexus, they are all about the same, i would say.
maybe you should give +Volume a shot, it could be something samsung has modified in their touchwiz to boost the volume, like how the Beats ranges from HTC.

I found the ringtones and notifications quite low, but all i do is use Audacity to boost the volume of my ringtones then put them on my phone!

this is the exactly scenario i meant by some audio are softer by default.
Does anyone know if Google plans to increase the speaker volume with the next update? I know there are plenty of equalizer apps available, but since this is a common issue with the GN I am hoping google has acknowledged the sound is too low and will increase it without the need of us all to download an app.
Does anyone think the volume will be increased?

You would hope so and I am also hoping they at least do something about it rather than having to use an EQ app to make the volume louder.
I don't see the volume being low at all. In fact its quite loud. Louder then the G2x and on par with the Rezound.
Maybe the LTE version has higher sound levels. Even review videos are confused by the audio problems. I dont know.
I do know that I'm running 4.0.3 and sound is the same. I don't think its official so this may change but for now....

Volume is low and its not for everything. On my LTE just seems to be default sounds for notifications. Music on both speaker and headphones is fine.
Volume+ free is enough at +3 for me to correct the notifications.
I find the volume to be quite low compared to my OG droid. I've loaded the old ringtones that i used on it onto my gnex and compared them side by side. The volume on the gnex is noticeably lower, but this is without volume+.
with the volume+ speaker modification on and the max vol set to +13 (that's as far as ive cared to go, as the speaker starts to crackle a bit) the volume still isnt much louder than it was. i know it sounds counter intuitive that the speaker crackles and the volume is low, because it does to me, too. it just makes me think that the speaker is weak. if that's the case, im not sure than they can do anything about it...

Maybe you should try equalizer instead. My volume went up plenty loud with no crackle and it seems like this speaker is actually good quality they just goofed the volume.

I agree. Coming from my iPhone, I expected a quieter speaker as that thing is LOUD! That being said, next to my Droid X, my wife's Mytouch Slide, etc this thing is so quiet I cannot hear notifications at times.
I'm using volume+ at level 8...it helps, but I would say aside from battery life this is the only other shortcoming I've experienced with this device.
This is something that I really mis from my s3 probably the thing I would pick if I could change one thing. The phone gets decently loud when playing music (and the quality is amazing) but in call volume I constantly wish it got louder and the same is true for the speaker phone while in call. I think even just alittle bit louder would make a huge difference since for me at max volume its right at the edge.
Anyone else feel the same? I cant be the only one and I have good hearing lol. Please someone fix this!
So far I am seeing my problems disappear one by one as mods come out (share button in blinkfeed, green battery now clear, 30 volume steps for games and music, ect)
That's odd... I find it too loud already just setting it up 2 steps below the middle level of the volume when in call.
Maybe you have a dud. I can hear mine at almost max volume just like a speakerphone on a cheap device. It really is quite amazing

IDK my dads HTC seems to exhibit the same behavior. I will test more to be sure but I doubt its hardware related since my speakers sounds strong with no distortion or anything.
The N7 is just too loud. I like that it CAN get loud but it doesn't get quiet enough. Even 1 tick seems like its super loud. At night in bed I usually have to turn the audio off to watch videos or use headsets. I had to turn my keyboard volume to 1 and system volume to 1 cause the clicks were too loud.
I know this is a weird question but anyone know a way to lower the lower volume settings? I'm running CM Kanged and perhaps they have the volume increased for other devices.
On my OG N7 I would have it 3-4 clicks in or higher. 1 seems like 7 compared to the old N7.
Too damn loud. I know there are apps to make it louder but I haven't seen anything to lower it. Some custom ROMs can provide more steps for greater control but 1 is too loud. I need like a .15 or .25

So totally agree, too loud! no idea what the solution is either and I've looked around. Hopefully there's some mod for stock but I'd be willing to do just about anything.
Er... my shiny new N7 is not too loud. (Production date September 13.)
It's significantly louder than my old N7, but far from being really "loud".
Also, it does absolutely not have the reported problem of hiss when turning down volume.
Perhaps production batches differ in loudness?
Mine doesn't hiss and I'm not saying it is glass shattering but at night when everyone is trying to relax I have 2 options, Volume Muted or Volume Notch 1. Volume Notch 1 is still too loud and my family gives me the stink eye.
The max sound is fine but I think the lower portions should go lower.

Agreed. I suggest using XPosed Framework if you are rooted, and look for the XVolume module (last module in the downloads section of the app). It breaks the volume into 30 steps. I'm going to test this out for myself and let you know my results.
EDIT: Doesn't seem like it helped very much.

I have that happen to me; the reason is that the Tone+ adjusts the device volume and not the headset's own volume. I blame the supposed 4.4 "enhanced support for bluetooth devices" trying to be too clever...
Either way, I've bodged mine by using the equaliser to flat pull down to 10% on all frequency channels and then set headset volume to minimum using the hardware volume rocker.
Clunky, but it works!

I've owned one of these headsets for almost a year (I also own the earlier HBS-700). I've tested it with the HTC One and Nexus 5. A few notes from my own experience:
As pointed out elsewhere: The HBS-730 controls the volume level on the Nexus 5 not the headset itself. I expect this is a "feature" of 4.4.
This headset has remarkably short Bluetooth range. I've seen drop outs when I have my phone in my right pocket but not in my left. My suspicion is the headset radio is on the left side. Why this is a problem is beyond me. Anyway, range in open air is better but if you expect it'll carry around the office, through walls or (occasionally) through your body: look elsewhere. The 700 has better range, oddly enough.
The battery is great. I can listen to music or podcasts for 8 solid hours. It tends to cut out at around 10 hours of use (ymmv). I've yet to see a significant loss in battery life.
The wire shielding as it enters the the headset body will start to break down after enough use. I've yet to find a real solution to this but a little electrical tape seems to prevent additional damage.
Sound quality is good. Sound isolation is very good. Mic quality is alright and very dependent on shirt collar and headset position.
$42USD (on Amazon.com at the time of this post) is a good price.
Recommended: Yes with the above caveats.

How I found the solution or where I found the equaliser?
If the former, the answer was trying anything I could until it didn't deafen me!
I noticed that when I pressed the volume buttons on the Tone+ while music was playing, the system device volume bar would appear on the display and adjust just like when pressing the hardware volume keys on the device. This never happened on my Nexus 10 (stock) nor Galaxy Note (stock, PA, CM) and the headset volume could be adjusted independently of the "source" volume, so conclusion was 4.4 specific. "better support" for bluetooth devices was a well publicised thing about 4.4 so I drew that conclusion as well.
I then reduced the volume using the hardware keys to minimum and found the volume to still be too loud, which is why I had the idea of using the equaliser to drop it further.
I only use Google Play Music (for the All Access subscription), so to get the equaliser it's just Overflow Dots -> Settings -> Equaliser. Your player of choice may be different or simply not have one... I don't know if the equaliser is Play Music specific or system-wide...

I also have this volume problem, yet would still recommend the headset. Really helps me ignore the lack of a proper headphone jack cutout on my spigen Neo hybrid. However, has anyone on an aosp rom noticed the volume problems as well? I wonder if it's just a Google kitkat problem.

Thanks. Your first part answered my question. Does your phone also automatically increase back up to full volume on the phone no matter how you try to turn it down?
Example:
Connect headphones
Set headphones to minimum volume
Attempt to turn down volume on phone
Phone turns the volume back up to maximum no matter what

yeah, it's very finicky but does work eventually if you keep pressing volume down...
Update seems you have to start playing music before it will let you turn the volume down... the headset switches mode when playing music "media audio" and not playing music "phone audio" and when in one mode it looks like you cannot adjust the volume for the other mode...

So just to make sure I'm understanding this:
Start playing music via bluetooth
Use equalizer to turn down music
turn down music on headset
listen at less than an ear splitting level

switch 1 and 2, and use phone volume button for 3, but otherwise yes, this is what works for me...

I have the same case (pretty solid). But I'm looking to get this tomorrow and glad you guys seem to have found some type of solution since these look really great to use. Does anyone have DSP manager on their phones and used it with these yet?
Viper4android offers the same thing as dsp manager so I've been using that. To answer your question directly though, no I have not.
