I would like to be able subscribe to just the first post of a thread and receive an email update when the first post is edited/updated.
So for an example, I could go to a ROM thread and subscribe to the opening post. Then when the Dev comes out with a new version and updates the first post (and often title) I would be sent an email alerting that there is an update.
I suspect that this feature would lighten the load on the server because it would reduce the number of people who hit F5 every 20 seconds when they are expecting an update.
This is similar to this request http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200001 which I think is also a good idea.
this would be a nice feature
If only it was requested in the stickied thread in this very forum...

Please allow posters to close their own threads and delete double posts. It's ridiculous not to have this feature!!!
What is so harmful about us closing our own threads?
I think it is beneficial, for example:
1) OP feels harassed: closes thread
2) OP learns that there was already another, more prominent thread of the same issue: closes thread
3) OP wants too closes his upcoming software update but doesn't want to read other's post issues that he has fixed on the next version.
etc...
Why can't we close our own threads? Delete our own posts?
For ***sakes look at these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4120834#post4120834
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535393&highlight=deleted
If you aren't going to implement this then atleast tell us why in the world we can't delete our posts!
Here is my previous thread posted at the wrong forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535157
After reading Mike´s post it is clear that the best and easyest way is to click on the red button asking an experienced Mod to do the action, otherwise it can be a democratic chaos...
Just my opinion.

It sounds obvious that you should be able to delete your own posts. However, it can cause chaos! Once you create a thread you do not own it, particularly if other users have contributed posts to the thread.

I agree, Just because you posted a thread, doesn't mean it's your thread. This is a community with no personal ownership of posts or threads.

Deleting the first post in a thread deletes the whole thread. This could be a long running thread with many posts and pages. To allow this thread to suddenly vanish because the OP deletes the first post can upset many contributing users.

However, it's relatively easy to have the odd post removed by clicking on the report post (red triangle) that appears on all posts. All you need do is say something like "please delete my double post" or "delete my post it's in the wrong forum" etc etc

Once again I reinforce Mike's statement. The Mods are here to assist you, please make use of our services.

There are also a couple of other fiddly reasons why it's best for a Mod to delete posts - one is that a Mod can also move the post to Trash. You may not know that deleted posts are still visible to Mods and leaving them kicking around forums makes things look very messy to Mods even if other users see a nice tidy board. Another reason not to allow user delete is that a very few users could use this to cover up "provocative posting" or just to cause trouble with other members. (You can imagine for example, that a ROM thread suddenly disappearing because the cook is bored with it could lead to lots of frustration amongst users and extra work for Admin and Mods.)
Just use the report icon or contact a Mod - quick and easy

Just basically report to mods is the summation here.
Got a question about deleting a post:
Once a post is deleted, then all posts after it in the same thread will be changed a post#. E.g, if post#2 is deleted, then post#3 became #2, #4 become #3 etc. But if the original post#3 is cross-linked to another thread using the 'view single post' function. In such a case, will the cross-link url address be updated accordingly?
The link will be to the deleted post, no re-shuffle will occur.
The URL is showpost.php and p=4153097 ("p" is the post number, not the thread number, that will be "t").
Here is one I deleted from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6
As a moderator, I can see deleted posts. Try that URL above
Dave
In the above case, seems you deleted the whole thread. This is the url you pointed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=6,
And I can not access these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=5
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4153097&postcount=7
My question is for example in this thread we are talking in,
if you deleted this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4121794&postcount=3.
But I already crosslinked this post (next one to the deleted) with this url: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4132664&postcount=4.
So my above url will become this post, is that right?
BTW, sometimes I can see the contents of deleted post from a google search result.
Edit: Ok, seems I got it, you said no re-shuffle. That means if #3 deleted, , #5 is still #5, so there is no influance on crosslink address of posts. Thanks.
Hello.
How can I contact a right moderator?
I would like to occasionally post a few Appz / Games with download link.
Of course, only if it is extremely good programs and is freeware.
I've seen that were left in this forum posted by me.
Would like to set these things in the future itself.
When I try to set something comes a message
me that a moderator must be enabled.
I post no spam
Best regards
Welcome to forums
You need to arrive to certain number of posts so all XDA features can be unlocked.
Keep posting and you´ll get soon.
Many people on the forums keep close watch on certain ROM's for their phones here on XDA. It would be awesome if there were a way to subscribe ONLY to the first post of a particular thread so that if it is edited/updated you would be notified through e-mail. I'm not talking about subscribing to a thread because you'd be getting tons of unwanted e-mail and notifications, just the first post of the thread. Many developers edit the first post of a thread with new links when they release a new version of their ROM/APP/THEME.
This would let you know immediately when your favorite ROM has had an update posted.
I know, this is a great idea.
Agreed. There is a problem though. Some cooks have designated upto 5 posts for notes on their roms, not only the first.
That's true. Though it seems a majority update the first page in some manor. If we had this functionality they may make a point of doing so.
I have an idea that I believe is doable within the abilities of VB, but it will take a little bit of work to implement.
Create a sticky LOCKED post in the forum. Allow a subset of users that can modify locked post (or if it is possible, just that SINGLE locked post).
So, the first post in that thread would be a link to all of the various mods. Each time a mod is updated, one of the select people make a post on that locked thread saying:
"Mod XYZ has been updates to version a.b.c... Follow the link in post 1 to get the latest version!"
That way you can subscribe to that thread and you will just be notified when one of the very select, few people post. I realize that this is less than ideal, since you may be notified of ROM updates that you don't use, but this would work within the capabilities of VB.

Users cannot post in closed threads That's the biggest issue there tbh. Does give me an idea I will raise.

It is unlikely this will be done by xda until the bulletin board system they are using supports it (hence why proper RSS Feed monitoring has not been put in for individual threads).
However...
You can do this using a external page monitor such as http://www.changedetection.com
Simply point it to the post you want to monitor and it'll email you or update an rss feed with an update to alert you to the change.
Ok you need to set it up manually, but it's a solution.
It would be a great feature to be able to subscribe to a topic but only get an email if the opening post is changed. This happens a lot when ROMS are updated.
With the current system you can only subscribe to a topic and receive email for every post made.
If the feature I suggest would exist it would save a lot of unwanted email. Usually the topic title is changed with any ROM update so by reading the email received from XDA you can already see if your favorite ROM is updated or not.
I think a lot of people would use such a feature if you would publish the existence.
I second this request. This would be very usefull!
My suggestion is this;
Use the subscribe to thread function at the top of the page under "Thread Tools" to unsubscribe yourself from the ROM thread in question.
Then re-subscribe and choose the daily or weekly notification option.
The thread title is displayed in the email you receive so you can keep track of it and you will not receive an email every time someone asks a question that's already been answered 568,000 times.....
Not perfect but its better than nothing.....
I recently received this error message while attempting to update a post with a logcat attachment that I had meant to attach to the post originally but forgot to.

Now I know I'm not a terribly active poster, but I would hardly qualify myself as new, since I joined back in Aug. 2010. How can I go about verifying my account to avoid this in the future? Also, is this the appropriate forum, or should it go under Q&A instead.
Thank you for your assistance.
There is a lot of replies that covered your question. You need to have 30 posts to have these restriction lifted. We can't do anything about that.
