Very quick question about setting the phone down - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

When you set the phone on a flat surface, does the camera hit the surface? I hate how my iPhone is flat, thus the camera would scrape against the surface. I'm hoping the GN doesn't do this so I won't need a case

I was wondering this as well. My incredible has the camera sticking out which sucks, but at least the lens ring protects it a little bit. I noticed the rezound, has the lens sticking out beyond everything else.

There is a slight indent that the camera sits in. I still set it down carefull even though its safe

The back cover sits out just a little further than the camera does, but its not very much. It seems like if there was dirt or something on the surface there is a chance it could touch the black camera area. The lens covering sits in a little further.

[Q] Is your front facing camera off-center?

Does anyone have to tilt their phone slightly to be centered on the front facing camera? When I have the phone face directly perpendicular to me my face is off-center...debating exchanging it.
You do realize the camera is placed to the side of the front speaker and not in the middle of the phone, right?

Yes.... I do realize that.
The thunderbolt and iphone 4 I had previously used didn't have this issue. and they had an camera off-center to the right of the speaker. Meaning that they probably accounted for it with the placement of the camera sensor.
Mine doesn't show me perfectly straight on, if that's what you want to know, but i never gave it any thought until now so it's barely noticeable and not at all problematic for me. I don't think there's anything wrong with you device, maybe the device in general. But I suggest not giving a f*ck. Works for me.

You do realize that the front of the phone...AKA the glass...is curved right?! It's not flat so of course you have to tilt it.
I read the thread and just had to ask myself...REALLY!!!!????

Actually, like the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus, the screen it self is NOT curved. The screen itself is flat... and only the top/bottom edge of the glass is curved, BUT the camera inside it is not curved/pointing down, it's pointing straight, that's why you gotta tilt the phone all weird to get it right.
But either way, yes it's off.
All the Android phones I have with FFC have all been off.. a lot. Nexus S, Sensation 4G, Galaxy Nexus, Asus Transformer tablet. All of them. Some worse than others.
I have a work iPad2 and it's off too. I facetime with my friend and I have to tilt it in a weird angle to get my face to fill up the screen correctly.
It's not that big of an issue but since I hadn't seen the problem on the thunderbolt and iPhone 4 I felt it was an oversight to not account for it on such a high end device.

I bought mine from Bell Canada. So international version I believe it is. anyways...
Vertically: maybe a degree till backwards if I want my face 100% centered vertically.
Horizontally: my head is slightly to the left but the effect is only noticeable if I'm holding the phone so close to my face that people would be looking at nose hairs instead of me. If held out 1.2 - 1.5 feet away from my face (where I usually hold a phone when using it the effect is so slight as to be negligible.
Besides, the slight shaking of my hand (simply from shifting in my chair) hides any discrepancies. I had to test by setting the phone down on the table and looking down on it as if I was holding it in my hand to see anything at all.
I can't say for sure if some of you are experiencing a more drastic shift than I or not, but for having the camera in the upper right hand corner of the phone I don't see anything wrong with how it's taking pictures and video.

Help with camera lens cover!

I mysteriously acquired a pressure crack on the camera lens cover. My phone sometimes takes a small beating in my pocket, but never with any other objects.
The crack, if I could even call it a crack, is so hard to see it has to be held at they perfect angle to a light source. Anyways it affects my camera being able to focus, is there anyway to replace this cover or remove it in general?
Any help is much appreciated.

Build quality

Over all I'm happy with the build quality of my GSM GNex, but it has one minor flaw.
The plastic edge around the screen. Top, Bottom and Right side are perfect and rounded smooth (just like my SGS2), but the left edge i kinda rough and not rounded and smooth like the others. It has a rough feel with a slight sharp feel if you slide your finger over it and makes a "small" rough sound.
Do any of you recognize this? Or is your GNex perfectly smooth like the SGS2?
mine feels uniformly smooth on all sides. one thing i don't like though is dust being trapped in between the said edges and screen. other than that it's flawless
I'm very happy with the build quality on my verizon version.
My only gripe about my GN physically is the rear cover. Just below the camera if you put a small amount of pressure on the cover and then release it, you can hear a slight clicking noise as the cover pops back out.
Other than that, flawless.
My problem .... frigging power button on side of the phone!!! I have to be so careful not to do a screen shoot its just unbelievable ...only other way of switching screen on or off is to hold the phone form top instead resting it on your palm

My Gnex is perfectly solid despite having dropped it on tile twice. Yeah, I'm a klutz. There aren't any creaks in it, no popped-up glass, buttons are smooth, no loose or rough joins anywhere.
As I mentioned in another thread, the "flimsy" back cover of the Gnex has an advantage in that it doesn't fly off and let the battery go as well when the phone is dropped. Every smartphone I've ever owned would, when dropped, fly in three different directions when it hit the ground- phone in one direction, back cover in another, battery in another. The Gnex stays in one piece.
Somehow I've only managed to break two phones in my life despite my constant accidental drop testing. Neither of the broken phones was a Samsung (one was a SE X10 dropped into a sinkful of water, the other a BlackBerry dropped on pavement). Admittedly the Samsungs feel a little flimsy next to a lot of high-end phones, but the fact that they are lightweight and plastic actually makes them more durable, IME.
Mine is fine, outside of one extremely annoying issue. The vibrate motor on my unlocked GSM Nexus makes the phone rattle on the bottom right side (obviously where the motor is housed) if I'm not holding the phone on that side. I am normally a vibrate all the time guy...now I only have it vibrate for phone calls because it annoys me so much. I love how powerful and silent the motor is when I'm holding it...(at least compared to my Droid Incredible 2). My Verizon Nexus didn't do this at all before I returned it. Sad.

Argh, hadn't noticed that before. cannot unhear the clicking noise
put a layer or two of masking tape on the back of the cover until the space has been taken up. problem solved.
My software buttons are uneven. Vertically. Should I sand them down or beat with hammer?

Mine too. I've exchanged 3 times and they all have the same problem. I think it is because of the curved glass.

I am curious. What are you talking about here? do you mean the virtual buttons on the bottom are not aligned? Could you do a screenshot to show what you mean if that is the case? I have never heard of that one before.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended of returning my GNex as a DOA, so now I'm waiting for a new one.

Camera scratch problems?

I am coming from the original HTC Evo, which was extremely prone to scratching on the camera, due to the protrusion of the camera. I have since upgraded to the S3 and notice the camera also protrudes out a bit, although not quite as prominently. Has anybody notices any scratching on their S3 camera from daily use (phone in pocket, sitting on counter tops, etc)?

I got my sIII two days after release and I don't have a single scratch anywhere.

Had mine 2 more nths now, not a scratch anywhere; although I bought a case at the same time as my phone in order to prevent that from happening. These phones are expensive! I wanted to protect my $200 investment right away!

I had the same problem with my Evo 4G. The lens cover was all scratched after a time.
As soon and I got the GSIII I bought a case (Seidio Surface) to protect the phone. It has the camera recessed to protect it. If the two days that I had the SGIII without a case I was careful not to scratch it. A problem I noticed right away was that the photos would be streaky in high contrast situations. The problem went away if I cleaned the camera with a lens cleaner. The problem was a fingerprint streaks from simply using the phone. The case also helps prevent this since you no longer can directly tough the lens buy just talking on the phone.

Naked GalNex Owners: Any scuffing/scratching from setting on surfaces?

Title says it all!
For those of you who refuse to clothe your GalNexes, any damage to the camera lens, chrome area around the lens, or anywhere on the back from being set/slid on surfaces? Any paint peeling, scrapes, what have you?
Do you set your Nexus down face up or face down? The screen is sunk in a bit, and the front is flat compared to the back, so hey it's not such a wild notion!

Nope.
...
my neked gnex is nearly flawless, screen is flawless. i set her on her back, when shes not in my pocket
Facing the rear,
One at the top, one at the top right corner, 2 dots to the left of the speaker grill.
And some marks on the headphone jack due to penetrations.
No abrasions or scratches on the case or screen. I've dropped it more times than I care to admit. The only signs of wear I notice are near the charging port. My husband cases his so that we can tell them apart when they're off (and because he's even more destructive than me.)
