Are you able to mount /data from the mounts and storage menu?
I'm not sure.... I didn't know what those mount functions in cwm did so I didn't try. Could you explain some more please

Mounting is associating a disk partition to a folder. It makes the physical partition readable / writable. Example: mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /data .
Try mounting data manualy and then try making a nandroid.
Thanks so much! Extremely helpful. Will def hit your, thanks button next time I'm on my PC

What ROM do you use? I think the system file system is error. Try to format system and try to mount system.
Does the phone boot normally still?
Can you still make a nandroid backup? Ore use the dd and sow on command to backup the system par.?
Maybe check the pernission with root explorer? Do you still have root? I could change root with one of the ext4 roms.
Maclaw helped me, I formatted system and indtalled cm9

Hi,
I just rooted my TMobile SGS2 T-989 and everything went fine. I got root.
Then I like to do a nandroid backup before I do anything further. I was able
to go into CWM 5.0.2.7 and selected 'backup', it went on for a while
until it gets to:
Backing up data...
Can't mount /data!
and stopped and put me back in the main menu.
What was the problem and how do I do it?
Thank you!
My SGS2 is running ICS 4.0.4 and I looked in /data and it's empty. It did create a folder with 3 files on my external SD card. Does it mean I'm ok?
Actually it's not empty. ES File Explorer showed a lot of files in /data...
I have the same issue that I said in an earlier thread, still couldn't find a solution

Did you turn on encryption? I did. I wonder if /data was encrypted that CWM couldn't do a backup? When I booted up in recovery, it did not ask me for the password to decrypt.
Solved:
I decrypted the internal storage (settings->security->decrypt) and did a nandroid backup again and now everything is fine. So it was the encryption that prevented the /data to be mounted.
It doesn't let me encrypt my sd card, I can't click anything, when I go to settings>security> encrypt sd card

read a lot of threads said that it is impossible to recovery the data as N7105 only support MTP mode while not UMS mode.
but i am thinking, if it is possible to have a apps/ adb shell command that can copy the entire internal storage bit by bit to a external device ( like external sdcard or even a pc using a usb cable). so that i could run data recovery program from that image copied bit by bit?
Enable usb debugging in dev options.
This would mount the external and internal storage that is rhe /data/media and not /data.

problem is, it does not matter if it can mount both external and internal storage, because if it is in MTP mode
there are no any data recovery program can detect the drive
just read that adb shell dd command might be able to do the job.
but as i wanted to copy the entired storage
is it possible that there are a dd command which can output the file to pc directly?
I had the same problem. Then I gave up

i have read many cases but with same fate as utkarsh said 'gave up'
Edit:
There is appl in play store, which can recover, but supports only Fat partition
So try getting your device to format in fat32 still can be help, but really i don't know how
Just i have read some command can remove your partition and you can create it to fat, later formating it again make it exfat
though everything is just assumption and idea, if you want to be creative read and collect information. it will never been risk free.

I know the app you are talking about. But it only supports external sdcard.

Its been a long time since I used CWM 5.0.2.6, but can I suggest doing it via Windows on a PC? Format as FAT. Its much easier.

Do not use this if you do not have an nandroid back up on your PC or SD card don't blame me.
1. On twrp go to the wipe data menu select format data.
2 select internal storage
3 hit format all data on internal storage will be gone and bug will be fixed.
4 profit u must have a android back up or stock ROM on your SD card or PC don't blame me.

This won't fix corrupt data. It will tell you that it is unable to format the data because it can't mount it, but give it a whirl.
