cory I've had nearly ever smartphone that Sprint has put out in the last decade and I really can't name one that I hated except the Photon. I have one sitting beside me right now and I feel bad even selling it to someone. There is absolutely nothing I like about the phone and it's light years from being on the Epic's level. Unless you have to make the switch I would urge you to reconsider.
Sorry to sound so dramatic but I love new phones and the Photon was just a major disappointment in every way.
I gave my photon to my wife and I got the et4g. I wouldn't go back. The photon is a good phone but not on the et4g's level.

both awesome phones.
heres what i have to say about the 2.
even though the photon has a higher resolution display, the Samsung display is still, by far, superior.
camera on the photon is not nearly as good, and range of view is MUCH smaller, meaning its like its zoomed in (on the photon).
THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO DEVELOPMENT ON THE PHOTON.
though there is a nice lightweight rom, and an OC kernel.
however
im in a crappy sprint coverage area, and the photon works better in my house, the radio in the photon really seems better all around.
and its a world phone, still, i think data overseas is considered roaming, or something like that, id recommend looking into that.

That's true there isn't hundreds of roms for the photon, but the ones we have are very good, and we have fully working cm7, except for 4g. As far as roaming in other countries ,you can roam or buy a sim card to use. I think both phones are good. And it comes down to personal preference .

His main reason is he wants a world phone. Its the best choice on sprint for that. Plus the photon forum would have different views

I've been using the Photon and E4GT side by side by side for about a week now, after using the Photon since launch day. Honestly, I'm torn. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Take the screen, for example. Yes, the E4GT's screen has brighter colors and deeper blacks, but the Photon is much brighter and thus better in bright sunlight and its colors are more natural. Ebook reading is better on the Photon because the screen is a truer white (the E4GT's screen is a bit blue), while viewing video on the E4GT is much better than on the Photon. While I like the larger size and lower resolution of the E4GT because my eyes are getting a bit old and tired, the Photon's higher res screen does show more information. I don't notice any problems with the Photon's PenTile screen, by the way.
I also think the Photon's build is generally better and it feels like a more quality device, and it's just designed better overall. Email is better on the Photon, the notifications system is much improved (I love being able to dismiss individual notifications), the kickstand is nice, and the Motorola car dock has MUCH better audio quality over AUX. The E4GT's dock has tons of line noise and isn't nearly as seamless in actual use.
At the same time, the E4GT is noticeably faster than the Photon, with less lag. That surprises me, because until I used the E4GT, I thought the Photon performed just fine. Now, it seems slow. Also, the Photon has better cell radios and GPS (faster lock), but the E4GT's wifi connects and disconnects faster. But, the Photon's wifi has better wifi signal strength once connected and overall performance. 3G speed is a wash between them.
I need to decide over the next few days which one to stick with, and I'm honestly torn. I think overall there's something about the E4GT that's more fun, but for anyone who relies on their smartphone as a solid business device, the Photon would probably be the better choice. It's really not at all a clear-cut decision between the two.

The average prices on Craigslist for each phone determines the value of the phone which then in turn determines which phone is better.
Average prices for the epic touch 4g is way, way higher. I have not seen an epic touch sold for 200, but for photons left and right at those prices.
I would not switch to the photon just to use it as a world phone. I would just get a cheap blackberry when traveling and use the epic touch as a faux tablet over wifi.
Let me know if you guys agree.

terrible logic. what the pricing says is that there is more demand for the epic touch, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the phone is superior. you are basically saying that the majority's opinion is right. using your logic, then you are also saying that the iPhone is a better phone than the epic touch since the secondary market pricing is even higher. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't agree with that statement.
though there are a few very intelligent, objective posts (wynand32, badname, etc), I find it laughable how biased so many of you are. why the desperate need to feel that your phone is the best in the world? different ppl have different needs and surprise! the et4g may not be for everyone.
back to the topic at hand: i owned the photon for 30 days before switching to the ET4G in september. The photon is a VERY good phone--in fact, I often find myself missing it for 3 reasons:
1) form factor - the photon actually felt better in my hand--higher quality and good grip... the et4g is simply too slippery
2) reception/radios/sound quality - photon's signal and gps were vastly superior to the et4g
3) battery life -- the photon outperforms the ET4G and it's not even close
The ONLY reason I have stuck with the ET4G is because of its camera. I like to use my phone as a point and shoot replacement and it's probably the only phone (outside of the iphone) whose camera is good enough for that. The Photon's camera was absolutely horrendous, and had they put a better shooter into it, I probably would still have one to this day
If you're going for a world phone, then the photon makes sense.
Otherwise, you'll like more parts of the E4GT.

I was just wondering what phones are better than the Epic because I honestly can't find one better lol.
I see qbking77 traded his Epic but I can't find proof that Nexus S 4G is remotely close to being better than the Epic.

The plus for the nexus s, atleast from what I can tell looking from the outside looking in, is it has a more active dev community. And don't get me wrong I am in no way shape or form putting down our magnificent epic devs

I would consider the EVO 3D, Photon, or the Nexus S 4G at this point. I've actually been using a loaner NS4G for a couple weeks and while I do like it, I feel it has a few shortcomings. Most of them I was aware of beforehand though.
I miss the LED light to indicate when there's a missed call/text etc. You can bypass this with getting a special kernel which can allow you to activate the backlights for the capacitive buttons, but under flourescent lighting at work its sometimes hard to spot that.
Also there's no SD card so you are stuck with the 16gb of internal memory. Not necessarily a huge issue but for some people it could be a problem.
Samsprint already issued an update to fix wonky reception with their radios. It sorta helped mine out but it still doesn't seem to match what I was getting with the Epic. That goes for 3G, 4G, and wifi. Kind of a bummer actually and this is what sours me the most on the phone.
I haven't actually seen a Photon yet but after reading one of the threads here on the Epic forum about it, I would love to try it out. It sounds like the battery life (with moderate to heavy usage) is amazing. The only way I get decent battery life with the Epic is to turn it into a dumb phone.
The EVO 3D was actually a lot more impressive than I thought it would be. The 3D can cause a headache at first but once you find the sweetspot the 3D pictures and videos look amazing. It blew me away. My coworker has one after upgrading from the first EVO and he gets better battery life with it and he has the same apps and same usage patterns. So it is very tempting.
All in all there are a lot of good phones out there and its just a matter of preference and what you are looking for in a phone.
I'm going to have to recommend the EVO 3d. I was first concern about the lack of keyboard, cause I came form a long line of quarty keyboard phones. After the first week I no longer think about missing a keyboard. As far as the screen goes, the Epic is brighter. But the 3D is far more sharper and crisp. Sense 3.0 is a far better launcher then touch wiz or any other launcher currently in the market. Battery life on the 3D is 100% better then the Epic. Boy how good it is to, not have to worry about finding a AC outlet.
I would say just about any.
I am an htc fanboy so I would have to vote for evo3d which I have now. Even the original EVO 4G was a way better phone than the epic. Has it ever received the gingerbread update?
Sent from my EVO 3D on the now or later network
I went from 5 months on the Epic, had an Evo temporarily, and now Nexus S. The Nexus is by far my favorite, I plan on staying with a Nexus from here on. There ar things I miss about the Epic, but having a phone that you can do anything with is worth giving those things up. The Nexus flies stock, and you can run MIUI, CM7, stock, modified stock, the devs are close to porting Sense, and if you want they have tw4 available. I am using a modified stock rom right now and love it.

Really? You think the original evo was better than the epic? I had one and really didn't like it at all. Battery life was not as good and after a while it really started lagging with anything. When comparing to games on your phone the epic absolutely crushes the evo in my opinion. I'll also never be able to go back to a basic LCD again. The super amoled has me forever ...
I had the epic but bought the evo 3d. I loved the epic! But its no more longer the best on the market. It has a single core, all the phones now have a dual core. I love the qwerty keyboard on the epic! i miss it so much! If samsung made a 1.2ghz dual core, super amoled plus screen, qwerty kb, better software. Id deff buy that phone in aheartbeat. Love the epic. It deff was one of the best phones out. Best single core! Its so underrated tho! They never advertised it, it was never in the media. Thats why everyone thinks evo 4f is better than the epic bc sprint practically sponsored it! Epic never made it to the media! I'm now an owner of the evo 3d only for the devolopment, and love it!
-3D EVO-
Yes someguy, I think overall the EVO was way better than the epic. I never really play games on my phone so i can't compare that part of it but as far as running wise my EVO was always super smooth. I played with one or two epics and noticed lags here and there. I love sense so UI to me is totally more appealing than Samsung UI. Lots of people loved the epic but look at the support it got for gingerbread. Everyone has personal favorites though.

All i can tell you (imo), this things DESTROYS the Evo3D in every aspect.

It's faster, the screen is way better, the speaker is louder, the phone foes better, ways less, and all around looks better.
I have evo 3d, but not for much longer. This phone number blows a custom romed evo 3d out of the water stock. Imagine.... A phone that doesn't require tweaking to feel like a "superphone "....
My advice is make the jump. If your unsure, then the not happy with the 3d. There is no phone I would rather have, absolutely happy with this phone.
Do yourself a favor, don't compare the screens unless you want to see how pitiful the color reproduction on the 3d is compared the the epic touch.

You won't regret it at all. The phone is very fast, super light weight, beautiful screen... The only thing I don't really like is the lock screen but that is not a big factor.. If u can get this phone go for it and you won't even look back. I ran quadrant 2 times first time 3288 and the second time I got a 3684 so what that being said this phone is the best phone on the market
That's what I thought but there is a reason this is being called the best smartphone in the world. It just runs.

Tried Them All And Found One Worth Keeping...
This is coming from someone who has been with Sprint Android from the beginning. I started with the Hero, then the Evo 4G. In the last 3 months I have tried all the newer sprint phones for at least 2 weeks or longer:
Evo 3D on launch day = Returned within 30 days because it was not worth keeping for the next 2 years until my next upgrade.
Nexus S = Pure Android but a step back from an Evo 4G (really liked the idea of NFC but it was unusable in my area)
Photon = Motorola is junk....I cannot stand their bundled apps and the build felt chunky in my hand. Far too similar in speed to my Evo 4G to justify keeping it.
Galaxy S II = Amazing speed, crystal clear screen, no lag, super thin, light as a feather, and so far fantastic battery life. I can't wait until this gets a huge developer following like the Evo 4G did. I can say I will gladly keep this phone for the next 2 years. (sure when the phones with quad core 2.5GHz processors drop next year I will probably want one but who wouldn't)
I am blown away that there was little to no marketing for this phone. They pumped the Evo 4G and Evo 3D, but as far as I see it, the Galaxy S II is Sprints new flagship phone until the iPhone gets here. I kinda wonder if it will ever get the attention because the iPhone is rumored to land at Sprint by the middle of next month.
Great products dont need hype. Positive user feedback will create a ground swell and everyone will want one. This phone is great.

I say ET4G is better just because the screen is larger and has 4G WiMax...
Only real strong point I see on the iPhone is there App quality.
If anything just get the Epic Touch and pick up a iPod Touch 4th generation.
If you use bad grammar, drive a Prius, and are well off due to your parents you should get an iPhone. They are quite pretty and they give you two color choices, and that "****" is dope...If you are creative, love customization, and want a phone built for form and function you should get an Epic Touch 4g.

This is for ATT Galaxy S II, but it is close enough to Epic 4G Touch that Sprint users can relate. It is actually a decent straight up side-by-side, actual usage of features, comparison with no fanboyism. Covers App startup, VoiceCommand/Siri, Games, Browsers, Notification Bar, etc.
Part 1
Part 2
Get the iPhone. I finally upgraded to 4s after using Evo and Photon for the past 2yrs and there really is no comparison. iPhone is buttery smooth, super responsive with better apps and IMO unparalleled user experience. I didn't realize how much I missed my iPhone after leaving AT&T, and it's safe to say that I won't be buying anything but the iPhone for the foreseeable future.

Please tell me what is not buttery smooth and and super responsive on the Epic 4G Touch because I have not found it yet......Also you mention the EVO and Photon but this is in the Epic 4G touch section so your comparison here is pointless.
My SGS2 is much smoother then the 2 devices you listed as well, so what's your point?
Wife just got the 4S on Friday. I have the Epic Touch. She's never had a smartphone, and I came from a TP2. We were out with friends showing them our new phones, and she spent more time talking about MY phone than hers. We went to NYC Saturday, and used both phones all day. After ONE actual day of use, her white 4s is in the box awaiting a trip to the Sprint store for an exchange to an Epic Touch, with a white silicone sleeve.
I really don't understand the hype that surrounds the iPhone. Admittedly, yesterday was the only time I used one, but it was all I needed. Everything is so much easier on the Epic.

I've used the epic touch at the Sprint store and while it's arguably the best android phone it's no iPhone. After hearing of all the signal loss issues with no patch in sight I would definitely steer clear especially considering Samsung's spotty update history. Bottom line, there is a good reason why the iPhone easily outsells any individual android phone, and it's not because everyone is an izombie.
Yess sir, it'll be coming

right, like the "you are holding the phone wrong" deal on iphone 4 when it was having reception issues.
Any suggestions? Almost up to my upgrade, need some advice

E4gt by a long shot. Smoother ,longer battery life!
The epic 4g touch by a long shot. Samsung focused on software amd hardware instead of a gimmick like the 3d did and the nexus 4g is a great phone but it's out of date hardware wise.
Lots of other reasons, but those are the biggest ones.

Evo 3D isnt even used as a benchmark when comparing newly released phones, almost as if it is "old" hardware", such as the Nexus 4G Epic Touch IS the best device of 2011, IMHO it will beat out the Galaxy Nexus as well, once we have official ICS anyway. But by then HTC's Quad Core device will drop, making the Epic Tough "old hardware" If you want today's top of the line device, then its Epic Touch FTW!
I disagree on the evo3d not being a benchmark. A nexus feels slow compared to either of the other 2 other phones. When it comes to comparing a et4g and evo3d, u almost have to spend a week just you figure out what screen u prefer (i know people say a evo3d looks washed out when side by side). Truth of the matter is that both screens are terrific and depends on ur style. As for power, its like racing 2 new street bikes, both are plenty fast and to me, speed isnt a issue. The new sg2s actually has the same processor (almost) as the 3d. Now it comes down to the joy of using, and i pick sense everytime. Htc has of nice widgets that play well with sync'n ur accounts. Facebook is fully intergrated with everything. At the end, both phones dont leave much to be desired. U will be completely happy with a evo3d or et4g. Ill also add that the et4g takes.better pics, but also not 3d (so ur choice). To me 3d is great but i would trade cameras with the et4g if i could. I think the evo3d screen is way more responsive and feels alot better and smoother to use. This might not be a issue if u have never owned a sensitive device.
***i left out bugs and battery life because of it being a misleading issue. Xda is full of whinners who complain about every detail on both devices. Fanboys lie about battery life on both devices. Both make it thru the day and charge it at night.
No question the Epic Touch. I have had all three these phones. The EVO-3D was a major let down for the successor to the classic EVO 4G. I returned it after two weeks.
Bought the Nexus-S 4G and it was a cool little phone. Nice screen. Lightweight. Fast for single core.
Last week picked up the ET4 and man this thing feels and looks like a next gen device compared to those other two. Like those other phones feel years old. The ET4 has an amazing screen. Very thin. Lightweight...ridiculous long battery life. And the good ROM's are finally coming out.
For Sprint this is hands down their best device.

I agree, my Wife still has the Nexus and compared to my ET4 it is a huge difference. And this phone is much thinner which I really like.

there are issues with EVERY phone. The prime will have its fair share of issues, hell, they just rolled out an ETA for nexus users to fix a volume but.
I wouldnt take any other phone except for the galaxy note. and even thats too big. The et4g will be in my hands for at least the next 6 months. its THAT good. Had the nexus, evo3d, tried the photon, there is no comparison whatsoever.
Also, no point in waiting on new phones, because guess what, after you wait, then finally make a purchase, something better is going to come out 2 months later.
This is a great phone and you will love it. It is super thin but doesnt fell cheap. It is much lighter than the Evo (I have held the 3D so I cant compare). Very fast and the screen is beauty. You can even see it clearly in daylight at a medium black light setting.
The only issue I am having with it is when I play a game on it it just closing the app because of a sound issue.
Here is the posting on google about the problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17623
And here is the possible solution to the issue:
http://www.grayfinstudios.com/post?id=ag1ncmF5Zmlud2ViYXBwcgwLEgRQb3N0GIHuBQw
But even with that problem the phone is still wonderful. I was looking at the Sprint forum a few nights ago and Samsung and Sprint are suppose to be working on a fix. But you know how that goes.
ive tried them all. epic 4g touch is bar far the fastest and best battery
Epic Touch 4G by a very long shot. The device is super fast and the stock rom is very well rounded. I am a flash-junky, and while my device is rooted, I am still running the stock rom. Even the default launcher is great, although I still prefer ADW Launcher. The device runs full flash and never laggy no matter what sites I go on. Even adult sites (just to test of course ). I can play every video type I've tried with the stock video player. Even AVI and MKV. Even things that my netbook has trouble running, the E4gT runs without a problem.

I have the E4GT, gave my Evo 3D to my wife. Nexus is coming out with new model called Prime.
E4GT vs Evo 3D = E4GT for sure.
Keep in mind E4GT has bugs for some people (including myself) loss of service and games crashing, a fix is "supposed to be coming soon". Even with this bug, I choose E4GT.
E4GT vs Nexus Prime:
Every aspect Nexus wins for me with BIG except the camera.
Note that in camera world 8mp vs 5mp doesn't matter, it's the lense. From the international version of Nexus Prime, the camera sux. This is a deal breaker for me because I take an average of 100-200 pics every month (like they say, the best camera is the one you have with you when you need it). UNLESS the Nexus Prime coming to Sprint I would guess around jan or February improve the quality of camera, I decided based on that.
Today's winner is E4GT. Tomorrow's winner is pending for me. If only I knew the improved Nexus Prime would be coming to Sprint, only then 100% Prime. Or if camera Quality is not important to you, 100% wait and get Prime...
IMHO
I'm a total Moto fan because of the radios they have and the Photon has been an awesome phone. Thing is I went into the Sprint store today to check out the new stuff and the G3 was just so sexy. I'm eligible for a new phone at the end of August and I'm wondering if you guys think it would be a good switch or should I wait for the new Nexus around November?
Specs are meh, screen is blah.
Evo3d-photon-s2-galaxy nexus- s3
S3 is the best phone yet.... Battery is so much better than the rest, signal comparable to photon screen awesome.

The screen is better on the s3 but not in the sun. The radios are a step down from the Photon, though. Battery life for me is pretty much equal between the two. I only moved to the s3 because my gf needed a new phone so I upgraded. The BEST things about the s3 is that there is more development and more accessories available. It's definitely a solId step up, but not revolutionary.

Why don't ya just wait for the Photon Q? Its coming out this month.

I dont think you will be disappointed if you get the S3.The hardware is top notch and there are some great developers working on it. We dont know what the new Nexus(es?) will be yet. I'm not one to wait and I think that the S3 would be a great use of your upgrade. If you held it, played with it and you like it, just get it. You will love it.

Definitely.....a few steps down even. That is my only complaint. I've tried every radio and reception is horrible on this phone. My og Evo, my coworkers' evo 3d, evo lte, and even lg viper all get much better reception. I though it was defective, so I exchanged it......only to have the same reception with the new one.
samsung's notorious for terrible radios, that's a given.
I switched fro the4 Photon to the SG S III and I can tell you 1st hand they are almost equal DBM, and antenna signal wise. I still have my Photon, and the SG S III is way better in every step of the way. Antenna wise the Photon is a bit stronger but not much. They seem to always be with in a bar or1 dbm difference. In weak signal areas the Photon is better only by a hair. GPS wise all seems equal. Everything else the SG S III blows Photon away period. OG EVO then EVO 3D which was trade in for a Photon, now SG III.
Wait for photon q if radios are what ur after its tempting
But I can stand right next to the tower with my photon and still get very low data speed, so signal strength doesn't matter really.

Not really a comparison, the Q does not have a removable battery and has a physical keyboard (ick for me anyway). I was really hoping for a better Photon successor.

I see it as this you have at least another month before the new nexus devices are announced you can hold out since your upgrade isn't till the end of August any way. See what google has to offer and hope motorola is making the new nexus device which would make sense since they pretty much made the new photon and the atrix HD look kinda crappy in comparison to their OG models.
I've been considering about getting the next nexus and dropping skinned phones all together but it always seems to me the nexus line is always inferior in some hardware specs. Not saying they suck but some of the specs don't make me at least say hey I'm gonna drop my 4.8 sexy for a 4.6 with .03 or so space for nav buttons and no external and possibly no removable battery.
Weigh your options in tech you'll always be disappointed in some aspect or another

I have a Photon, and a GS III and I am not getting what you are getting reception wise. The signal even in my house which is a bad reception area is acceptable. The signal and -dbm are usually with in 1 point and most times on par.... or the same. I can say based on my unit Don't look back. I still am always checking reception with both side by side!
Hardware wise I don't think there is much of a comparison between the two phones. I do agree that Samsung's radios suck though, and Sprint's network doesn't make it much better. On my E4GT I used to get data roaming ALLLL the time. Not on my S3 but I still get 1X in places that should easily be 3G. For example, I go to the local Applebees a lot and when I'm sitting at the bar I get 1X even though every other carrier gets 3G in that same area smh.

Do like I did.....buy, and try it. But, hold on to the Photon and check how they both receive signal side by side in areas that you know signal reception is weak. I ditched my photon after the 2 day test. I am still holding on to it also....the Photon that is...The GS III blows the Photon away, and this is coming from someone that has a high tech review, built a 750 rwhp Supra, and high speed computer rigs to trade \securities and game.

That's a tower issue I bet....for me this phone is very close to the Photon. This is not a touchy euphoric feeling either. I still have my Photon to tesrt signal reception side by side. Robert from S4GRU did a comparison test and said that the SGIII is very strong signal wise. He is a one of the administrator signal tech's on the forum also. I didn't need him to tell me this since I have a Photon to test reception against. He took various phones including the Photon and did a signal and -dbm test in strong and weak reception areas with 4-5 phones from Sprint side by side that was donated by members for the test.
I believe those having issues with reception may be having network vision upgrades that are affecting signal like I have from time to time here in NY. I have received 1.9 mbs downloads from time to time.....it's only a matter of time that LTE goes live here in NYC. Even when LTE goes live all towers are not going to be completely functional until 2014.
Thanks everyone for the input :good:. Guess I'll be getting the SGSIII at the end of this month or the beginning of next. Woot!
