been searching for the last couple of weeks for a solution to this problem but no joy
flashed CM7.1 stable, everything works that I need (WiFi, 4G, GPS, etc) except 3G. it shows 1X, confirmed by speedtest.
i came from a stock unrooted 2.3.3 OTA update with the latest 2.15.00.0808 radio which i rooted using the revolutionary method, went with CW, flashed CM7, no speed bumps, booted perfectly with the exception of again, being stuck with 1X data.
I've tried every solution i could find from calkulin's radio thread, as well as restoring the stock rom, ##3282#, setting to auto, then flashing back to the CM7 backup. I've tried flashing different radios. I've tried flashing with AR instead of CW. I tried some CM7 nightlies. No solutions I've come across have worked.
tried all these:

When I flash back to stock rom, 3G comes back. I hate sense and love CM7, didn't like the other AOSP roms including MIUI which i didn't like at all. Gingerbread-evo-deck which was my 2nd choice also runs 1X. The only custom ROM that ran 3G was SNS Gingerbread 1.9 which came with a bunch of the useless Sprint apps which was one of the reasons I rooted in the first place. I'm currently running that now however because it's the only one that runs 3G.
Why would other people's evos work flawlessly with CM7 while others are having my issue?
should I downgrade to 2.2.2 then try flashing CM7 again? any other solutions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks

yep, except i like CM7 and don't like the other roms.
Alright so you like CM7
Have you tried a CM7 based ROM?
TrevE Supporter!
yeah, i tried MIUI, but all the AOSP roms give me 1X and not 3G. everything else works like WiFi, 4G, GPS, etc.
What radios do you have?
Have you tried updating your PRL and PRI?
You can only do this on a sense ROM by the way

I think CM7 shows what your real data speed is, and the stock rom does not. If you are running at 1x on the stock rom it shows 3g, since it doesn't display 1x. CM7 displays 1x, 3g and 4g.
I bet most users on Sprint network are really running at 1x not 3g.
KJ
ok WTF
with infamousteeboy's help today, i re-flashed CM7. now it reports 3G.
WTFBBQ

That's true, though most of the newer sense roms, have incorporated that 'fix' into their roms to show true data, and not signal.

i think i have to disqualify that statement, because it's fixed now, i'm running CM7 and it displays 3G in the exact same areas that were 1X before.

i have sense on my evo again because everywhere i went no matter my signal, the bars on cm6 showed 1-2 rarely 3 never 4 and the 3G was painfully slow. ran tests and i got .1 mbps on cm6, flashed sense to see if my phone was the problem and it got 1mbps, ten times faster? can anyone explain the potential problem here? its killing me cuz i love aosp but the 3G is killin me
Always had the same issue here. One of the reasons I stay on a sense based rom.

Post in Q&A
And just a suggestion, install a senseless ROM... Built off sense but has sense removed... Will be the closest thing to AOSP but will keep your speeds and 4g working.
The signle meter on CM6 only has 4 bars, the Sense one has like 8. You are getting the same coverage.
Secondly, wrong forum. This is development.
Third. I have slow 3G on CM6 roms too. I have no idea why, and everyone else will tell you it's Sprint. But I can be in the same place, and run speedtests and Sense based ROMs are always faster.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Yup. Sense will always have better 3G signal. Sometimes when I am on CM the signal even drops down to 1x.
Thats irrelevant .. he also posted the speeds he was getting. OP, I don't know what's wrong; doesn't happen to me. Is it on all aosp roms? Try messing round with the settings
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
oops i thought i posted in q&a, my bad.
and i understand the whole bar ratio but on sense i get like 7 bars out of 8 rather than 1 out of 4. seriously it is almost ALWAYS 1 bar and it drops to 1x a lot! its never faster than about 125kb/s on a speedtest no matter where i am. its almost like theres a governor bogging it down
ALSO: ive flashed gingerbread roms galore, all the same issue.
On a AOSP rom the 4 bars are the 4 low bars outta the 6 in sense, so if u see only two bars then ur short 4 which gives u horrible battery. Also kernels play the biggest role in data if u want to believe it or not...

I had the same problem until I flashed a Sense rom, re-flashed the newest radio after first boot. Updated the profile then restarted the phone. I then could flash any AOSP rom with no speed problems. But every time i go back to a sense rom I must do that again if I want to go back to AOSP...
I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me...

hahahahaaha thanks i already know all that. and yes its all checked.
well it seems that the radio flash and updating the profile worked some magic. speeds are up above 700kbps
EDIT: nope. back to horrible speeds jk
can i get some feedback from more CM users please? this is so confusing
I had the same problem on cm6. Still don't understand why but I'm sticking with a sense rom. I get the best results on myns roms. Fresh was almost just as bad as cm6 as far as speeds go. Kinda weird imo. Maybe someone can explain?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If I had to guess, its due to the fact most sense based roms have the carrier spyware built in. (ksoftiq I think is the process name)
But, thats just a guess, I'm probably wrong.
I have the same issue with cm6 and the latest gb asop roms. Not with the display of the bars, but on asop roms only at my work I will bounce between 1x and 3g. I will lose data, then go to 1x, then back to 3g constantly. When holding, the signal isnt too bad, but it is almost as if the phone cannot pick between towers or something. I have tried multiple radio/pri combos and such and have no solution. Also tired switching back to sense and updated profile and prl.
Edit: Could it also be location based? This only happens at work in Burbank, CA. Just about everywhere else I am around LA I do not have this problem.
I suffered from this on cm. On gb I get great speeds for a while then it will act crazy and get slow. I reboot and it goes back to being fast again.

if u ever notice some of those extra processes running in the background of sense like IQRD or IQ agent for example... i believe some of those are qualcomm based programs that help ensure good data transfer speeds. And it's funny that we all hated sense because of those extra background processes that seem to slow the whole system down but some of them are actually helping to keep data speeds up in sense roms. Obviously in AOSP those processes are not present therefore speeds arent always as reliable and may drop in and out. Im just speculating on this and have no concrete proof but i did read up on one of the processes and it points to qualcomm's cdma based technology development so im assuming there is a correlation.
I'm using a rooted copy of 3.70 ROM and am stumped as to how to get tethering working right. It will work, slowly, with 4G but when connected with 3G it will not allow internet access. Does anyone know what I am missing or maybe point me in the right direction? The only fix I could find was downgrading back to 2.29 and with an older kernel. :\
I've tried older version of wireless tether, barnacle, etc, all with the same results.
Bump......
So no one on this site knows what is needed for tethering to work properly?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Hey haus. 3G is working for me. I tether with both often.
Seeing as you tried with older versions, maybe it could be the kernel you are using.
What kernel/rom are you using? I'll try to see if I can replicate the results.
Also as I'm sure you know, texts/phone will disrupt 3G so if you get a text in the middle of your tether, it will disable 3G.
Well I just found something very interesting...
I tethered today and found my connection to be extremely slow for some reason (3G). I went to speedtest.net and it said the closest test server to me was in the UK....
I'm not sure why it's doing that considering I'm in NY but thats rather fishy. I'll do some more testing and let you know.
BTW I'm using the stock #15 kernel and Myn's Warm 2.2

This happens to me all the time in Cincinnati, OH on 4G. It thinks I am in Whales or some random place. I get good speed results but it is weird.
As for the OP, wireless tether doesn't work well in all roms. There are even some roms where it doesn't work with 4G at all...

Well CM6 had no 4G for a bit. The Alpha for WIMAX for CM just came out and thats still in its infancy so I doubt tethering works at all let alone for 4G. Not too sure on this since I don't flash CM cause I use 4G a lot.
Edit: I stand corrected. lol Maybe I'll try CM.
I have similar problem as the OP of this thread. I am using MikFroyo 4.5 with netarchy 4.3.2 cfs_SBC_Havs_more kernel, wireless tethering works fine in 4G but with 3G, my laptop connects to the EVO but there is no Internet access. It seem as if either the EVO is forwarding the traffic or the DNS on EVO is not resolving names.
Any help here would be appreciated.
Thanks
I've had problems with wireless tether lately, but I started using the wireless hotspot that comes included in my rom. Currently using CM7 Nightlies and CM7 with WiMax.
Ok this might be a bit lengthy.
Yesterday I got a replacement EVO because my last one stopped taking a charge (luckily I was able to lock it and flash back to stock).
It's been almost a year since I last rooted an EVO, and I thought I remembered all the steps. So this morning I rooted it (unrevoked). Cleared all the cache's, and then flashed Calkulin's EViO 3 v1 Beta 2.
Well once it booted up all I got was 1x, not 3g. I then tried to flash EVO_Radio_2.15.00.04.08_WiMAX_27925_PRI_NV_1.90.00 3. And then reflashed EViO 3 again.
Again I only have 1x. After this I realized I ****ed up big time. I didnt grab any numbers from the radio screen or make a 4g key backup OR make a nand backup.
The phone is saying the following:
baseband_ver: 2.15.00.11.19
PRI_ver: 1.90_003
PRL_ver: 01115
Hardware information is "unavailable" for 4G MAC Address, Wifi MAC Address, and Bluetooth Address.
So how badly did I **** up? Is this something that
It'll show up as unavailable unless you're actually connected, then it'll show.
Also, if you're on AOSP, it'll show 1x because it shows true data strength unlike sense.
Did you run the 3G fix on a sense rom?

Thanks for the reply. Well whats weird is that im doing this at my desk, and on my old phone it always said 3g. And I had Calkulin's EViO 3 running on that as well.
Is there a way to test my connection to verify it's 3g?
And is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974180&highlight=3g+sense the 3g fix you were referencing? (and no i have not applied this)

Hmm, awkward. And that is a sense rom, correct?
I was referring to this method > http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...aybe-boost-your-3g-speeds-with-a-simple-hack/

I have an evo equipment number 0004 rooted with one click root. on stock rom shows in status bar 3g but when I flash any custom rom will show 1x. but from what I see I am still getting 3g speeds on data. put my evo up with my wifes evo and they both load in the same amount of time. not sure what happened with this wondering how to fix this problem. any suggestions will be very appreciated.
Thank You.
Which rom are you using? Radios? PRL? Posting that will help get you an answer. You did say the stock rom was OK?
I am using evo deck version 1.2 gingerbread 2.3.4 currently. I flashed the newest radio prl version is 01115 I didnt take the ota update flashed the new stock rom from the user that posted it on here flashed all the new radios.
OK, looks like you are not the only one that has had that issue with deck's rom. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14374227
whats weird is that even on sense roms I get the same issue besides evo deck like mikG or other sense roms. even before the updated radios I had the same issue. maybe its not anything to worry about just seems odd
Download speedtest and run some tests. That will clue you in to if it's a real issue or not. It could be just a reporting bug in the roms or it could be a borked 3g radio.
If you reflash to a stock rom now, does the 3g notification work right? I know you said that it did work on the stock rom, but was it recent?
ok I will try that I dont get signal at home but before I leave the house I will flash stock rom back I used stock rom last week and it said 3g in the status bar. what speeds should I be looking for on a speed test? should I use the speed test app in the market?
Speed test is in the market.
Download speeds should be in the 1300kbps to 1500kbps
Just to get you some real world numbers, my 3g speeds in Santa Clara were 900kbps to 1331kbps on 3g and 2600kbps to 3400kbps on 4g
I've tried about many ROM's such as miui, CM7, decks, etc.... I've had no luck, the wifi is just so horrible in many places where in a sense ROM I'd have perfect wifi or good, compared to poor wifi disconnecting after a while.
Thanks for reading Anyone have a solution?

Yeah I've tried it just bit ago and the past days as well but I'm sure it isn't a hardware issue because on nrg 3.5 rom from Nov18 my wifi works perfect where I would I couldn't get wifi signal at all on cm.

It has nothing to do with speed, please read what I said... I don't think you understand what I said. Sense shows the wrong wifi signal. It shows 3 bars for me while aosp shows 1. Aosp shows true signal because I am far from the router
Having trouble with AOSP? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295702
Are you using the included kernel or flashing custom ones? While your signal may show lower, you shouldn't notice a drop in actual connectivity. Flashing an incompatible kernel, like a Sense kernel, can mess up your wifi.
I'm on MIUI right now showing a full wifi signal. I haven't used Sense in a very long time, but I don't remember getting better wifi reception while I was using it. I'm using Tiamat right now, maybe try a different kernel next time you flash AOSP and see if that helps. There are also a few tweaks you can do to help with your wifi signal, like changing the wifi scan interval in build.prop, but I haven't actually done anything like that since my signal is fine.

I've heard that 004s can be problematic, I have a 003 and only get issues when I go a while without wiping fully. I'm using 4.1.0 right now, start there and maybe try other versions if you want. I ran SZ for a while and it started off smooth but eventually got laggy and unresponsive at times despite anything I would do (wiping caches, etc). Switched back to Tiamat and all has been working well since.
Give it a go, if it doesn't work for you then maybe it's some kind of hardware issue. Just to be sure, do a full wipe and try to avoid restoring anything unless you absolutely have to - definitely don't restore system data. Unfortunately you can't take your phone in to Sprint and get a replacement since your wifi is dodgy on AOSP. If it happened on stock then you might have a case.

I've been using the tiamat for now and it seems more stable on wifi, funny though, the wifi seemed bad on the default miui kernel. I also moved my router to a higher place on a shevel with nothing steel or bad around it. Oh and don't worry my local sprint store in Los angeles is a big time Hispanic corporate... they replace devices for any complaining here to avoid issues with the people lol! I got to love it.
