Has anyone figured out how to use your own audio files for all of the different types of notifications? I have a few .mp3 files that I've used on all of my previous Android phones that I'd like to continue using. I put them in the "Ringtones" and "Notifications" folders that were initially on the phone. After I did that, I was able to select them as ringtones for the ringer, but they don't show up as options for SMS and e-mail notifications. Any ideas?
Try converting the ones in the Notifications folder to m4a files, they work for SMS and email notifications for me. Could also be the length of your files.

or just install zedge from the market. Thats not your own ringtones, but there are good ones too..
Ringdroid is a nice application for this, it works quite well and you can just uninstall once you convert your audio files to notifications, ringtones, or alarms.
Thanks for the tips. The files are very short, so it's not the length. I also looked for Ringdroid, but I can't find it in the market. There's something called "Ringdroid (Social Edition)," but this doesn't look like it's the right thing. When I get a chance I'll try converting the files and seeing if that works, although I do find it strange that my mp3s (they were from a pack a downloaded a while ago called "RCP Ringtones) are seen when selecting ringtones for the ringer, but not for notifications.

Have you tried setting it as a ringtone within the music app? Then from there you might be able to choose it in the alarms and notifications?
make a folder on your SD card (the root of it) called "Notifications" and "Ringtones" then copy your ringtones into one and notifications (SMS and Alarms) into the other. Then they appear in the menus. I had to google about to find this myself!
Alternatively you can set it through the music application!
You need to create specific folders on the SD. I have alarms on the SD root for my alarm tone and notifications for my message tone!

That is how I have it setup so I only have one folder in the sdcard root for all of my alarms, notifications and ringtones.

Why can't they make things simple these days
SOrry to jump in, but cant someone just run over what i may be doing wrong.
On my SD Card i have the following folder setup :
sdcard/
sdcard/media
sdcard/media/audio
sdcard/media/notifications
sdcard/media/alarms
sdcard/media/ringtones
and within the notifications folder i have put an MP3.
BUT it doesnt show up in SETTINGS > SOUND & DISPLAY > NOTIFICATION SOUND
Nor does it show up in ChompSMS or SMSPopup.
I have alos tried to create the folders in the root, with no luck.
I know im beign blind, what am i missing.

Have you tried with a different audio file?
Just download 'Ringdroid' from the marketplace and you can edit your mp3's in the fly and gives you the option to save as tone/notification etc..
OK, sorted it.
The file will only show up if i put ".mp3" at the end of the file, otherwise it doesnt show up.

I noticed there was a similar layout in the phone's ROM

There was some Facebook mp4 file in that ringtones folder.
So I have a few customer ring tones that I transfered over from my EVO 4G. They are in the Mp3 format and I am able to set the ring tone on an individual level, but I cant set it as a default ringtone.
So how does one set a customer ringtone that is an MP3 as the default ringtone?

Go to settings, then sound. You'll be able to set phone ringtone as well as notification ringtone.
I should have said that I have already tried that. There is no option that lets me pick the sounds that are on my SD card.
For example when I go into my contacts list and go to ringtone, there is three options, Default Ringtone, Select sounds from My Files and Phone Ringtone.
Now when I go to Sounds it just gives me a bunch of generic sound files. Nothing from my selection.
you just move the sound file to the /media folder using any file manager app. Then it should show up in the list of sounds when you set your ringtone. The same steps can be done for notification sounds. If you're confused, there's plenty of youtube video tutorials showing you step by step information.
I do it this all the time, I create custom ringtones with Audacity (cut out the chorus and fade the track in and out so it sounds cleaner). Right now I have the Jetsons door bell as my notification sound
Just a wild guess that you didn't put your custom ringtones in the proper file location on your SD card.
You need to create a folder called "media" (no quotes). Inside that folder create a folder called "audio". Inside that folder create 3 separate folders called "alarms", "notifications" and "ringtones".
Place your custom ringtones in the ringtones folder, reboot (not sure if that's necessary) and your customs will show up.

Wasn't exactly sure where it should have gone so I used ringdroid to create another Ringtone and it place the media folder along with the Ringtone folder on my SD card.
Always amazes me how simple a problem can be resolved if you have one price of information.

DO I have to have the same ringtones on all the folders so I can place custom ringtones in say text email etc..?

You can always download RINGDROID from the market. It lets you "trim" your mp3's and set them as default/contact ring tone or notification.
So far that is the best way I found to work in my phone.
According to FAQ thread, I need to use 3rd party app to set an mp3 as a caller ringtone. Can't I use the native android music player and "set as" just like any other android phones? If this is the case then Imma go pee pee on electric fence... *sad face*

Edit: Well, it's that simple if the mp3 you want is in the ringtone directory - it doesn't pick up ones from your regular music dir.

So you're saying that in music player, there is no "set as " option? Well, that is silly :/
Another alternative is to install GoSMS Pro (free from the market) which ids a great sms app.
The added bonus is that when you go into your contact and select 'set ringtone' you can choose GoSMS instead of Android System. You can then choose between default ringtone, current ringtone, system ringtone or MUSIC which will let you select any mp3 file from your music folder on your phone.

In pre-ICS Android, one could place a file Media in de sd-card. Within that file you made the file "Audio" and in that one you made 3 other files: "notifications", "alarms and "ringtones". In those last 3 files you put the mp3's.
Does that strategy still work in ICS, or can you only put custom mp3's as e.g. ringtone, via a third-party app?

You can just stick mp3's in the pre-existing Ringtones folder. The "problem" is that when you pick a ringtone through the standard interface, it only looks there and NOT in the Music folder.
Does anyone have any sensible explanation as to why they remove "set as" option in music player?

Unfortunately, in ICS, this only lets you add audio files for the ringer. The added files do not show up when trying to select a notification sound for SMS and e-mail. I still haven't found a way to use custom notifications for these things yet.
Drop your mp3 ringtones into /sdcard/Ringtones and reboot your phones. They will then be available in Settings/Sounds/Phone ringtone

The music player is for playing music and not setting ringtones. Doesn't seem silly to me.
Plus not many people want a ringtone that's as long as a song. (3 to 5 minutes)
ringtones go in the ringtones folder, notifications in the notifications folder, alarms in the alarms folder, tis easies!
But...
has anybody noticed custom ringtones only play once?
i have a ringtone that's 3 seconds long...plays it once and then stops :| bit annoying...
EDIT: After googling around a bit i've found the solution to that myself!
I feel like I can be helpful for once. It will loop ringtones if you convert the mp3 to OGG format, and in the file info (you can edit this in Winamp for example), create a field called ANDROID_LOOP and set the value to TRUE.

Wow, this is maddening! I've read a lot of threads about ringtones and sounds but none seem to acknowledge what is happening on my VS986 11a phone. I have put custom notification and ringtone files in the appropriate system folders. In fact, I put the same files in both ringtones and notifications folders. The files appear there and will show up when I try to change the notification sound for a specific app. I can select and hear them as ringtones but not as notification sounds. When you select one of the custom sounds for an app, it plays the system default sound, Crystal.
I initially put them in as mp3 files. I noticed that all system sounds are ogg files, so I changed them to ogg. Still no joy. When I play the files from the system folder with SE Music Player, the files play just fine. They simply won't play as app notification sounds. What gives?
Alarms are easy because I have an option in the Clock app to add new alarms to the OS and the custom notifications/ringtones (ogg format) that were copied from my old phone using the Data Transfer Tool show up and work properly. However, no other custom notifications/ringtones (ogg as well) I've added to the system (same directories as the working ones) show up even after multiple reboots. I'm also unable to manually add them since there isn't an "Add new" option for those categories of audio.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

i've had no problem adding custom notifications sounds to my Pixel 2 XL - with one exception - Google Voice. Ringtone, Default Sound, Gmail, Text, Deliveries (Third Party App) all work fine. as with prior Android phones, i simply created a "Media" folder and then within that folder i have the folders "Notifications", "Ringtones", and "Wallpapers" with custom sound files. my notifications are WAV files and my ringtone is a MIDI file. once i place that "Media" folder on my phone's storage and reboot the phone, all sounds are available and "stick" after being selected. again, the only exception is my custom Google Voice Voicemail sound which i can select but it refuses to "stick" and insists on playing my Default Notification Sound and also annoyingly plays it TWICE (double notification). i think this is more of a Google Voice App bug than the phone.

Interesting, the data transfer tool copied the items straight to Noti/Ring/Alarms at the phone root rather than a media directory. I'll try that now.
Thanks Gekko2, looks like it was a combination of the files being 'ogx' (upon further inspection but worked when renamed to ogg only) and not in the Media directories.

pictures are also media. my "Media" folder includes my custom sounds and wallpapers (picture) -
"Media" Folder--->
1. "Notifications" Folder - Alert (Default), Email, Gmail, Text, Voicemail - WAV Files

glad it helped! now could you PLEASE do me a favor and test and see if a custom sound (WAV File) works as a Google Voice Lite Voicemail Notification on your Pixel 2 XL? Thanks!
I have not had any issues (when adding them manually). However, I do miss the option to add them directly from the sound selection pane like on the original pixels with 8.0.
i solved my problem about using a custom notification on Google Voice. the fix is -
Long Press the Google Voice Icon--->App Info--->App Notifications--->Voicemail--->Sound--->Pick Your Sound
i never knew there was this setting beneath the App Icons let alone that it overrides and "sticks" better than the actual settings within the specific App!
so this still doesn't fix the double notification (i experimented by turning the other settings to "Silent" but that did not work) but maybe the answer still lies in these settings. anyway, i'm just glad i can set a custom Voicemail sound and not be stuck with the "Default". i hope this helps someone else!
I've tried adding mp3 and wav files to Ringtones or Media/Ringtones, and neither have worked even after a reboot.
I'm having a glitch with clock ambient and screen tapping.
Ambient clock will not stay on and tapping in not getting active. Both are on in the settings.
