On Board - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I just switched to Sprint, and got this phone today! :] I am currently rooting it.
I was so used to CM7/MIUI Roms.. Which ROM is currently the most "popular/updated/best" rom people in this section are using?

Hey, a fellow chi towner..
there is no one single favorite rom; there are at least 6 or 7 top notch ones, so, best thing is to try them all!
When you find one you like, and get it all setup, make sure you do a nandroid, so you can easily restore it if you want to.
I have about 5 nands on my sd card, so depending on my mood, I can restore any of them in about 5 minutes or so!

haha yeah Chicago bro! Well, I try not to flash a lot I like to stick to one I know there isn't a "best" well ill check something out I suppose. What's your favorite?

Hi, congrats, & welcome to the party. I got mine yesterday & love it so far. I have been running Calkulin's 1.5 without a hitch, but as he said, it's all a matter of personal preference.
The latest modem, kernel, etc. for the E4GT is EK02, and some say it helps with the LoS issue. Calkulin has a stock EK02 Rom, if interested, here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367971
Good luck.

Finally rooted, but I really miss MIUI, can't wait for a STABLE release.

welcome homie,
pardon the trolls and douchebags and search before posting lol.
seems most people run Viper or Calukulins rom. Both are very fast and stable

Another Chicago guy
I am very happy with Calk's ROM 1.5a with the Rogue 1.1 kernel, phone is rock solid stable not one LOS since on that kernel. I am still on stock EG30 too. Very happy with this device.
Also running the cool ICS 1.6 theme by Overstew and some misc. transparent Widgets.
This phone is easily the best device on Sprint right now. Only upgrade worth buying would be the Galaxy S3 next Summer.
Sprint Galaxy S2 w/ Calk's 1.5a + ICS 1.6

CLIFF NOTES IN RED ON THE BOTTOM, LOL
for a couple years all I did was put rom after rom on my EVO..
Mind you, I had many MANY choices to choose from.
I got this phone about a week ago, rooted it and used UOT Kitchen to do some small tweaks..
I also used Titanium to remove "some" bloat ware.
but, I think I would like to try out a rom.
What are the top 3 roms for our phone?
Also, I want to make sure EVERYTHING WORKS. With the EVO so many roms, the 4G didn't work, the HDMI out (I know we don't have that) didn't work and so on.
I would like a rom thats stable, nothing annoys me more than anything then force closes.
Juggernut seems like a popular choice but someone said there is no support for it anymore..
Whats the hot new , STABLE rom?
THANKS
Juggernaut just got updated. Go with Juggernaut. It all comes down to personal preference.

Dude.. you've done this before... try out different roms and see what you like.
BEfore I got this phone, i was told Juggenut was the rom to get..
Then I heard it wasn't and Darkside and Macnut were the 2 champions.
So now Juggernut is back in the mix?
I saw Macnut is based off a juggernut...
I'm all confused, lol
Quick question, if some can please help me..
I do a complete wipe before I flash any rom I assume..
Cache,dalvik ,and factory reset clear.
Now, that never erased my SDcard and I assume it still doesn't touch my EXT. SDcard, but I just realized I now have an internal one..
Does a wipe erase that too? the internal one?
I have pictures on there and don't ever want to lose that ..
Thanks

i believe comparing ROMS is against the rules.
I would just like to remind everyone that we have HDMI-Out. It annoys me when someone undersells our phone. You just need an mhl? adapter.
Also, I'd try out DIGITAL.WARFARE, pretty awesome DeWizzed. That reminds me, try DeWizzed, it's a pretty awesome ROM.

Dewizzed is the rom that i keep coming back to. I like touchwiz, but i hace too many apps to keep going through pages so i like the gingerbread app drawer. I love stock and this is as close as it gets. Its pretty fast to. The only complaint i have is that i miss the touchwiz adding to home thungy. I hate the stock popup crap

i got this phone two days ago and am on juggernaut. it's pretty good so far. everything works well and is quick.
i picked it due to familiarity with the dev's work with the vibrant, but it's the same story with eugene's macnut, which will likely be the next thing i flash.
that being said, i came from a really good ics rom on my vibrant, so going back to gb is a little sad. i miss the ics launcher and all the small things from ics.
Look in the themes and apps section for a theme you look. Most of the roms work great without issues, so just find a theme you look and use one of the roms it supports
I use Daybreak and Digital Warfare cause i love the look of it.
Do I wipe cache partition?
??
For someone that's flashed ROM after ROM on the EVO...you sure do ask a lot of basic questions. Just sayin'.

Any stable ROMs to upgrade to?

Hey everyone,
I've been doing lots of ROM homework since the ICS update popped up on my stock but rooted 2.3.6 on tmo. Anyway I decided to freeze that device updater and pick a rom since it sounds like so many people were having issues with stock ICS. However, all the other ICS roms that have come out seem to be lacking functionality with bugs and other problems. Do these really hinder? For instance, I've been eyeing Darkside evo 3 since it seems the best but it sounds like everyone still has app hangs. AOKP has random reboots and call echo, no video cam various other roms have a mixture of those problems. If everyone is reporting problems, I ask myself "What can those ICS roms do that my GB can't that makes it worth it?" Or on the other hand, is the vast majority happy and don't bother to post their happiness and I only hear of the problems which are minority?
I ask because I get really frustrated if things don't work, especially when they did before. I get about 2 days of battery life now anyway and if I can't extend, I don't see much point. If darkside is legit, or another ics rom, should I go ahead and flash v7 or wait till v8? Also, I'm leaving the country on the 7th for a few months so I'd like something stable before then, especially when my phone is practically going to be my mobile computer.
It's really up to u what u would like... Me personally want to try them all that's way I can make my own decision... For example I was running eaglesblood and went to darkside eco. Then came the Ics update which took my root. Rerooted and flashed juggernaut which by the way is a beast. But since I not one to sit back and just settle, I jumped on infamous... There's a lot to learn from each ROM but if u want the tools are there. Don't settle. Always something is getting fixed or updated but whatever u do thank the devs... Without them we wouldn't have any of this happening.
As I said juggernaut is a beast in it's own right, I never had any issues with it. But once I flashed infamous I was super impressed of how fast all worked. Nothing has yet to f/c or give me any issues. The key to doing this is just follow instructions to a T. That's my best advice. Im new to this too but every dev def does their best to answer question as fast as they can.
Darkside 3v7 with venom kernel has been as stable as can be for me.

If you don't wish to tolerate any issues then i would stick with stock. The name of the site is xda-DEVELOPERS.

i read the whole infamous thread and everyone seems to say it's super stable so i'm not sure what i might have done wrong.

you have to do exactly as op directs... im looking to switch here today with the new chimera rom. only issue i had was now with the infamous 2.4.5.1 radio signal is lost. imma research on that later. love infamous but im so always ready to try new things i wana see what the fuzz about chimera is. just recheck your steps and enjoy. took me on the first try to get infamous. but again best of luck on whichever rom you decide to use. everything will have hang ups here and there. its developing, it happens. nothing is perfect but if you know any ways to make it so then implement your own time and start creating your own.
its best i can recommend. then again everyone is entitled to their own opinion.:good:

intended in full pun, i did say it was my opinion due to its what i have used, im currently on or wanna try. i didnt put a gun to his head stating he has to get any rom in particular. those are the ones i had flashed and tried out. how can i opiniate on any rom that i havent flashed myself..... does it make any sense? in regards of going for first? what does that even mean? as stated above, i only gave my opinion on working roms that i used. intended in full is the fact that the individual that asked the question asked for the responders personal opinions. so with that said i'll extend my freedom of speech to say, this site is for developers that help us out to get the maximum of our devices, if your a developer then create your own and publish it. dont bash nobodies work. their time invested is FREE. only thing they have its the donations we make. with that said i bid you well and happy flashings

So true. Sorta want to put this in my signature. I was thinking the same thing. Whether ROMs are good or bad is mostly opinion, unless they don't boot or something. I tried most of the ROMs mentioned above and honestly, even though I'm not using any of them now, they were all okay. Just didn't fit my preferences.

between the 3 ROMs i addressed the only issue i have had its i lost my 4g on chimeravshercules. but imma do some research and find radios to flash unto it and see if that helps my issue. other issue i seen is the desktop f/c but since yesterday it has only happened twice. its lightning fast for the most part and i LOVE the fact that i can customize as i want.as for juggernaut v5.0, itsa beast no issues i seen and for infamous the only prob i had was it installed team win recovery v*** which i dont care much for. reverted back to my backup and reflashed and worked great again. so until i get the vanilla ROM thats all i can input.:victory:

AOKP is working out some final kinks, but once it is done I think it will be the best.
Same boat here. ICS is just trash for me. My calls suck on low signal and wifi calling has a 3-4 second delay and thats with stock. I did all clean installs to ICS and wiped and wiped and wiped and it didn't change a thing. I tried Darkside before the official ICS drop and wifi calling was worse but regular calls were better. I was hoping AOKP would be ready by now. I'm going to have to go back to GB. I don't really want to but I can't really use my phone as a damn phone most of the time. I guess the trade off is having it look cool and making calls with GrooveIP at home.
May try Darkside and Beastmod before restoring GB stock rooted. I really really want to keep Apex.
Update-
Darkside is nice. Camera is better, wifi calling echo is gone too. Getting the weird dialing out after calls drop though.

Lost track of ROMs a few months ago... Tips?

Hey xda guys and gals. For a good year or so I flashed new ROMs waaay too much but have since settled down with MikG 3.xx. Its a great ROM, but I have the flashing itch again, but looking at the development subforum it seems all the names I remember have mostly faded with the rush of ICS ROMs out there these days.
My understanding is that we still do not have any relatively stable ICS ROMs, but there are so many of them now I can't seem to get a good idea if that is still true. How stable are the best of the ICS ROMs and are they worth flashing for regular use? I need to be able to use my camera, but I almost never record video with it. I do not care if video recording or 4G is broken.
Other than that, I need decent battery life (of course) and could probably only tolerate one or two system lock ups a day. I don't do anything crazy with my phone. I mostly just listen to music and make a few calls and texts so if a ROM can do that without crashing that would be enough.
Thanks for any input I get. I am super lost with all the current ROMs out there right now.
Team dirts cm9 port is and has been my go to rom for awhile now. Its super stable, with no "lock ups" for me whatsoever.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
DIRT's CM9 has had my attention, but I've been unsure about stability/performance. The only way I'll know for sure is if I flash it I suppose.
When going from something like MikG's Android 2.3/Sense rom to an ICS rom, will Titanium backups work alright? Will I be able to restore my settings/info? I can deal with it if I can't, but it is something I would like to know before wiping my phone.
Another thing I got lost on with all these 4.0 roms is that they mention something about partitioning for A2SD or something. What does that mean People never mentioned that before these ICS roms.
edit: Ah, nevermind about the partitioning thing. I see a guide for that.
There's some irony here- I look at all the rough edges on ICS ROMs and pine for good old mikG. If I were a flashaholic I might be going the *other direction* ...
Just goes to prove the grass is always greener etc

I've tried so many hip new ROMs since becoming a MikG user and I always come back The allure of ICS is strong though, so I have to see how development has come along in the few months since I last tried.
So far I am super impressed with Team DIRT's CM9. I am open to other ROM suggestions if they can compete with this.
Yes, you can use TB, I do all the time. if you're gonna go to an ICS AOSP ROM, I'd advise you repartition your SD Card to 1/1024 EXT 4.
If you're like me, you'll never go back to GB

At wits end--Stick with SGS2 or abandon?

Hey all,
I'm pretty tired with the Sprint/Samsung shenanigans, and am seriously debating ditching this phone. The hardware is fine, but I haven't yet gotten the OTA ICS update yet (and don't seriously expect it to happen any time soon). For me, not having the latest Android OS is a major deal breaker--let's not go into why I didn't buy a phone with it when I had the chance, as I was basically lied to. With Jellybean now out, and still on GB, I'm pretty grumpy. I just want a clean, functional Google Android experience, and I don't feel like I'm getting it with the current, stock on SGS2.
I used to have an original Motorola Droid, and I'm familiar with the rooting/modding scene, but I've been away for a while and the learning curve appears to be really steep. Using Koush's ROM Manager software used to be so slick, but now appears to be largely useless for the SGS2. So, I'm feeling a bit discouraged.
TLDR / So, with basically no help/options from Sprint themselves, I'm faced with either spending a significant time reading & researching on rooting/modding my phone to ICS/JB, or possibly swapping it on the private market for a Galaxy Nexus. I imagine that, as a Google flagship phone, the Android OS experience is likely to be much better.
Anyone able to help? It'd be much appreciated.

I think gb way more stable, faster, more responsive, and has better battery life. Ics is not going to give you any thing better than you already have it might even make it worse. I'm considering downgrading to gb calkulin 3.0 and looking for a nexus aswell... If you need ics one click ff18 is the safest and easiest way to get it.. Coming from other phone its hard catching up aswell im still afraid of flashing because I have no insurance or a way to replace my phone BUT there are many excellent roms out there you just have to be carefull and you will be fine

Humor me, here. My reading comprehension is fine, but I appreciate confirmation of steps. From stcck EL29, I assume:
1. Flash official ICS version linked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
2. Flash safe kernel/recovery, AGAT_v0.4.0, linked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421
3. Then what...? A choice to stay on stock rooted ICS or to flash any other rom? If I should choose to flash to a different rom, or a JB rom when they're more stable, will the safe kernel/recovery avoid all the nonsense of flashing back to EL26, etc.?
EDIT: Also, is CWM still necessary, or has it been obsoleted? It seems like with ODIN / Mobile ODIN, there is no need for CWM to flash new mods. Is this correct?
Thanks again.
Lol. I never questioned your reading comprehension. Yes that is the correct steps. As for agats safe kernel/recovery I use it all the time. It has the brick code (eMMC wipe) removed/disabled. Then after that yes flash whatever custom rom you would like. Flashing the EL26 kernel is I believe for leaving CM9 and AOKP to another rom. TW based.

This is a safe, easy and quick method for the SGS2 (assuming Sprint's Epic 4G Touch):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
That said, I'm going back to GB. I have 2 Epic 4Gs and both drop wifi after a few minutes (off at sleep not enabled). Plus, Google seems to have become a bit more invasive in ICS for my taste.

Thanks... I did both. I'm not really happy with Touchwiz, and I'd really prefer an Android experience closer to a Google flagship phone. Any recommendations? Is there a similarly easy & straightfoward way to do it, or only the "back to EL26" (or similar) rigamarole?

You should really check out QBking77's videos on youtube. Go to his Epic 4g Touch channel. Any situation you can think of when flashing, he shows you step by step on how to do it (or undo it) with links to all the required files.

Thanks. I did have Frankenstein's Ego 4.5 on my E4GT for a while, but when I tried to switch to AOKP Milestone 6, somehow it bombed out while following QBKing77's vids. So... hence, I'm here, asking questions, and exploring options.
I'll give it another try later tonight when my kid's asleep.
Thanks, again. :good:
Mobile ODIN is my friend. Keep the direct boot kernel on your sd card. I also use it to flash agats kernels. No yellow triangle as well. I know how ya feel. I got two kids. Lol

I don't like Touchwiz either but basically it is just a launcher skin. Install a new launcher like Nova or Apex and you'll be very close to a vanilla Android experience and you'll never even see all the TW crap. Uninstall the bloatware with Titanium backup and you might not mind TW based roms at all.
If you want an alterative to TW look, I recommend The Blu Kuban ROM (ics). Most of the TW elements are removed and it feels like a completely different phone. All the stock apps are themed too and its very customizable on how you want it to look. Lots of helpful people in the faq ROM thread as well if you are unsure of anything.

For an aosp rom(non twiz) I recommend aokp, it has tons of extra settings for customization and the cm9/10 themes work with theme manager in aokp. If you wanna flash straight to aokp, Odin el26+cwm.tar from your PC (or mobile Odin) boot to recovery volume+ & power, flash aokp.zip wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache & dalvik cache, flash aokp.zip again, wipe both caches flash gapps.zip, reboot to android
We are legion, for we are many.

If you are on the official ff18 build to get the ICS look and feel go to settings, and then go to applications, then select all, then go down to twlauncher, and press clear default, when you hit the home key on your phone a menu will come up select the first option if you like it make it your default.

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I ended up installing CM9 Alpha 6, using the Mobile-Odin w/ the Directboot CWM method. Fairly painless, and more to the point, the look & feel is really close to what I desired.
CM9?
Hi guys im on stock FF18 and I would really like to try stock ICS because it looks fluid and looks good. How do I install CM9 from having stock FF18 unrooted? I have tried to research this but a lot of the guides out there are only for EL29. Thanks guys Im pretty new to this.

About to flash my first custom rom

Well after doing TONS of reading, soul searching, and complaining about this under performing phone, I have decided to flash my first rom ever. I don't know if I am just tired of TW or maybe that what the problem is after all . I guess I will soon find out. Battery is charged to 92% and can't wait! BTW I will be flashing XTREMEPERIA V5 . I love the look of this particular rom and it seems to function well. I'm just tired of the same look day in and day out of my phone and need something different.
Flash a cm 9 rom u can change the theme and over all the first experience is simple

Good to know. I'm glad I made a good choice.I have had a few android devices, nothing like some people. I thought this phone would be the answer, but with it randomly rebooting and freezing all the time, I'm just fed up. If this experiment works, I'm stoked, if not, then I may be off to WP8 and a Lumia 920 or HTC 8x.
I would recommend CM9 or AOKP ICS, but that's mainly because I'm an AOSP nut. I've heard good things about the Xperia rom but to me it just doesn't have that clean AOSP look that I love (and wish I had bought a GNex for!)
I would suggest an AOSP ROM!
CM9.1 Stable - awesome ROM. Better battery life than CM9. Major plus over TW based ROMs is the theme chooser.
CM10 - not really DD material as many people have mixed results from phone to phone. Prone to have Sleep of Deaths and Random Reboots. Aside from the bugs, it's the fastest and snappiest ROM available (in my experience).
CM10 Superlite - the latest version (4.0) is based off a pretty stable build. Once you tune it right and break it in, it's FAST! Lots of features/bloat that I never really used were taken out... some that I did use though, but I can live without em (Browser sync is the only one really, well that and Picasa but I think that could be added DLing Google+, but not sure as it may be missing some dependencies).
Jedi Mind Trick - the BEST TW based ROM out in my opinion. Can't speak much on V9 yet since I have yet to flash it, but V6-V8 were all excellent. If you don't want to go the AOSP route and prefer faster data speeds (aside from decent battery life, this is probably AOSPs biggest flaw, slow data), then this is the way to go imho! I think it also has better battery life than all AOSP ROMs (CM9/10/AOKP).
And that's it. I've tried other ROMs but these ones all ran the best for me. I also want to check out Eugene's Vanilla ICS, but waiting on him to upload the newest version before giving it a try . Apparently he fixed the data issues that plague all AOSP ROMs. Anyway, good luck! We have quite the selection at our disposal.
AOKP ICS Milestone 6 July 15. Plus I added Google Now with a separate zip.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I will certainly keep them in mind. I flashed XTREMEPERIA v5 last night and it all works flawlessly. I was in the mood for something different and that rom certainly is different.

Awesome and congratulations! I first taught myself with my old MyTouch 4G and have rooted friends phones and have flashed ROMs. I finally got the courage to sign up to do what you are doing, to test ROMs and give my opinion on them.

The first phone I ever rooted was a MyTouch 3g. Man I hated that phone also. I'm really enjoying XTREMEPERIA rom. Just about everything works with the exception of not receiving email notification and an auto rotate bug. The auto rotate I fixed by fixing permissions. I'm still working on the email. This can certainly get addictive with all the new roms coming out recently, so happy flashing.

Stock ICS is the best. I tried almost all ROMs. Battery life is best in Stock ICS. UI is imp but kills battery.

The MyTouch 4G was and still is a great phone, I had a DD jellybean rom, only problem was camera was twitchy and no video recording but I never use it. I switched to the GS2 because my friend upgraded to the GS3 and gave me his gs2. I'm really liking the bigger screen lol.
I'm using a modified Jedi rom. Battery life and speed are way way improved over stock ics. I tried custom visuals, but they killed the battery. So no more of these. Go launcher eats battery.

I have to agree with Steve about GoLauncher. I used to love Theme'ing my s2 with all kinds of designs, but after I found out about how much RAM it uses I just got rid of it completely. I love having more battery life than performance, especially when it comes to large touchscreen phones such as the s2.
When I flashed my first rom I think I bricked my phone, lol. Even after all the reading I did, there was just too much information that I read up on, and I think that actually confused me as to exactly how I should go about rooting and flashing my first rom.
In the end it turned out all right, and now I use the latest Jedi Knight rom from ptmr3. I found that this one gives me the minimalistic theme that I've always wanted and the essential apps that don't take up a lot of memory.
