I'm eagerly awaiting the Galaxy Nexus release on Verizon in the U.S., and I've been reading a lot of reviews and such and there's a few things I've been wondering about in regards to the new launcher/dock in ICS. So far I haven't seen any reviews that have addressed the launcher in detail other than mentioning that you can customize the 4 icons on either side of the app tray.
I've been wondering...
1. Does the stock ICS launcher allow you to use custom icons? I'm not sure I like the look of the default ones they use for the dialer, browser, sms, etc... they look a little cartoony to me.
2. How about a scrollable dock (like in Launcher Pro) that gives you three panels to scroll through, with 5 customizable slots on each?
3. What about swipe gestures? For example, in LP you can set it so that if you swipe upwards from your browser shortcut it will pop up with a list of your bookmarks.
Thanks!

There is a labs feature that enables 'quick controls' similar to those found in Honeycomb.

To my knowledge no. You can either download a third-party launcher like LP, or go the root/custom ROM and/or custom theme route, in which case those will be found in the "Development" and "Themes and Apps" sections.

The Labs feature in the Browser's settings kind of has this, called "Quick Controls" which removes the top bar and you access bookmarks or settings by swiping inwards from the sides of the screen. But not precisely what you are asking for...
Ah! Oscillik beat me to it

I upgraded my Note to the Note II. On the homescreen of my Note I, I can place 5 icons in a row on the homescreen.
Now, with the Note II, I can only place 4 icons in a row on the homescreen, and the dock has 5!
Is somewhere an option, so I can place 5 icons in a row on the homescreen too?
None that I found, TW launcher doesn't even have settings AFAIK. If you want more, get either a modded TW (maybe SGS3 forums) or a completely different one.

One of the nicest things about Android that gets taken for granted is the ability to customize your user interface. While most folks tend to stick to app icons for launching their apps, Tagy offers an alternative approach: a tag cloud. Tagy is actually a set of widgets that let you specify a list of apps, contacts, or bookmarks to appear in a single widget. Then, as you use the widget, the items you use more often will get bigger.

This can be remedied by simply downloading and using a different launcher.
Android allows the user to completely change the UI by using different launchers.
There are many launcher apps available in the market, but 'Go Launcher' is my personal favorite.
Just download 'Go Launcher' and install it. Once you run it and set it as default, you can change the grid size to anything you want (10x10 max). It even allows you to get rid of the dock, (which I really like), since I have no use for the dock icons on screens other than the home screen.
For instance, I currently have a 4.3" phone with no dock row and a grid size of 8x5 icons and no icon labels. Works very well for me.
One side effect is that you won't be able to use any apps or widgets that need the TW framework to run. I have never used a TW ROM so I don't know any more specifics.
In any case, if you don't like the new launcher, you can change it back to the default TW by going into 'Apps' settings; select the current launcher app and click on 'Clear Defaults'. Press the 'Home' key and this will prompt the system to ask you to choose a launcher. Simply choose your default TW and go back to your original screen. You can do this unlimited number of times without any problems. This will allow you to try out different launchers available in the Play Store.
Good Luck!
i'm using Nova launcher, and have it set as 7 down by 6 across... 5 custom dock buttons for ease of access at the bottom finish it off for me
basically the same setup as i had on the Note really lol

Experts,
Normally (using TouchWiz), Pulling out the S-Pen will bring the S-Pen S-Notes Page buddy.
Is there any why to enable the same reaction when using Go Launcher.
I can only enable the pop-up S-note.
Regards,
No, you can't. Page buddy is a part of the Touchwiz launcher. So if you use a different launcher, you're going to miss out on the Touchwiz addons. I personally like touchwiz in this case. I plug in headphones, and I have the audio page, the same for the pen.
So... sorry No... It's part of Touchwiz.

I've just run into this same issue. I've really wanted to get a better launcher, like Nova, set up, but I really like Page Buddies for the S-Pen and headphone. I suppose I could create something in tasker for the headphones, but it wouldn't be quite as nice as unhiding a hidden launcher page. The one piece of this which DOES work is that when you do these items with a different launcher, you can still swipe the notification bar down and see the "recommended apps" so that gets you part of the way there, but it sure would be nice to be able to see these without swiping and also add other apps or widgets as you would like...
In tasker you could create your own page buddy with 'scenes'. Tasker scenes are not as beautifull, but it will work!
I'm curious to know what you'd change in the latest version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI for the Note 2. If you could design the next version, what would you add, remove, or tweak? I'm curious to see what the fans, and non-fans, would change.
For me, I would definitely want more functionality from the lock screen in the next revision. Having 5.5' of real screen estate means a lot of space for us to add extra info such as email/message content, info of last dialled/received call, more access to favourite apps, etc. I'd also like to be able to pull down the notification centre in the lock screen and be able to access the relevant notification from there. Lastly, I think the stock icons could go for a revision to give a more high-tech futuristic feel instead of the much cartoonish appearance it has now.
I'd make it look like Apex and just as customizable!
Done.
I would like a 5x5 or 4x5 grid size on the home screen,
Auto correct on the keyboard,
Resizable widgets (like we had on touchwiz 4.0),
Better Facebook integration,
And a few more s pen features
Cheers
Corey

I know I've probably said this before in another thread, but I really think that TouchWiz (and I mean the whole framework, not just the home launcher) on the Note 2 should be, and should have been from the get go, a hybrid ROM with PAD and PAL (per-app density and per-app layout) options baked right in. I mean, let's face it, some UI layouts of certain apps are just simply better and easier to use than others. YouTube and Gmail, for examples, are simply better experiences in a tablet layout.
Another thing that would have been nice to have would be capacitive buttons that respond to the SPen, instead of having to use gestures (just a minor niggle though).
Hello,
I would love to see a scrollable favorites contact widget with direct dial function (like HTC has.. )
I would lose the freaking gingerbread theme is all the Samsung phones....touchwiz and the whole framework is nice but looks totally dated to 3 years ago.

New UI for E-mail
The black UI on the e-mail is shocking. Can never read e-mails outside. THis should change to white, or atleast have the option to change to white.
I would make it able to lock in reverse portrait mode.

I agree. Tried several others, but Apex is easy to use and very customizable. If it were like this most would never look to change to another launcher.

They should get rid of that ridiculous amount space berween the dock and the app shortcuts. I know theres a mod but they should change that. And ofcourse incread grid size especially with the columns so we can add more folders or apps in a single row. Also add the ability to be able to add folders within the app drawer or at the least allow to reorganize the apps to our liking. Also it would be nice if we could have the option to choose the folder icon background.

I like the TW UI, it's a lot easier and simpler than other branded UI's. Just some things,
1- Bigger grid size options, I mean, up to 8x8.
2- Enabling custom icons.
3- Scrollable dock.
4- Re-sizable icons, including dock.
5- Vertical menu in App drawer (I am not talking about the list view)
6- Not a must, but it'd be cool if they could allow a custom background for App drawer. I kinda like it and miss it from bloated Go Ex.

I would definitely want a Pop Up Dialer which should be designed for use with the s pen! and more pop up optimizations like a pop up calculator and such.
Pop ups and multi windows are different in this case !
I just got my Note 4 and one of the biggest things that is bugging me (besides the delayed menu button) is not being able to have my installed apps display in an alphabetical list. Is there anything that can fix this?
I found an app calle 'App Drawer' but I am now unable to remove the default 3x4 grid icon on the bottom right which makes having 2 icons for different app drawers incredibly annoying!

Hey Dreyzzyn,
Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I just upgraded from the Galaxy S3 to Note 4 and very much miss my apps in "alphabetical list" mode. So much easier hitting the starting letter of the app you want and BAMN...a listing of apps with that letter pop up. But this Note 4 is confusingly not allowing me to do it.
Thanks in advance. Thought this phone was supposed to be so powerful...yet I find I'm missing my S3.

Get a launcher!
Note 4 stock does not allow listing of apps, to do this you must install a launcher. I use Apex but there are many out there. Just install it and pick set your apps to list view. As far as lag, to get rid of it just set Window, Transition and Animator scale to "off" under Developer options and you should be good to go. I've done that since the S3 days no problem and phone gets waay faster.

I think you misread the original post as he's looking for an "alphabetical list'. This is not possible on the Note 4 as it was on Note 3 and Note 2. If you think it's available please post of screenshot of that instead of just showing that you can sort apps alphabetically which every version of android can do. Two, totally different things. I've posted what an "alphabetical list" looks like in Apex since you can't do it in touch wiz. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/31104043/screenshot.JPG

If you want an app drawer on your edge screen use this....

It should of been an option from stock... Just add it to your quicklauunch edge screen.,
It works great with a secondary launcher if you wanna hide the dock on the homescreens.
Note: Hold the menu button within the app to change settings and font.

Hi. That's weird. Mine comes up immediately. For customization you need to open the app drawer and then do a long press of recent apps to get to a menu to select settings. Then you can change fonts, background color and such. What are some of the better options available? Always interested in checking out new apps! Unity launcher is nice in that you can set up shortcuts (including floating windows with the use of the app "floating window shortcuts")

Yeah didn't know about the paid one either, but hey its what this forums for, right? Mine is quick as well. Easy to customize.
I'am looking for a way that i can make on my home screen 5x5 for my icons.
Is this possible and what i can used for it.?
Ehhh... Is there a way to just have a "system" friendly shortcut icon to launch the app drawer? In other words, I already use a nice launcher app and I like its look and want to just open my app drawer to be the same as when I open it using the android app dock, not having this whole miui layer...
Currently using Next Launcher, but the launcher I use is irrelevant, I just want a system level call to open my normal app drawer rather than have an entire app represent the drawer. Another UI to manage is not what I want, as it is unaware of theme or font changes.
Isn't there a way to simply make a shortcut icon and put it in my edge bar.????????

Have you tried or are willing to use a replacement launcher? I use Next Launcher which lets you control the icon grid spacing both on the home screen desktop and in the app drawer plus let's you have fine pixel resizing of widgets (widgets normally only resize in blocks spaced as wide as your icons, but this app lets you resize widgets pixel by pixel for finer control)
Many launchers also offer this flexibility not just the one I mention. Check them out! I hope I understood your question properly! (Next launcher also let's you change the icon look, the screen transition animation, and many other things. It looks great and is compatible with all themes made for Go launcher. Furthermore, it restores touch wiz's lost wallpaper scrolling function! But like all launchers, it does nothing for the look of the edge bar unfortunately, since the edge bar is basically an unsupported hack on the O.S. which has to be programmed for specifically...)

I agree. I would love nothing more to have a shortcut to my 360 Launcher app drawer on the "Edge". The app drawer app the OP provided is fine in a pinch, but nothing beats the app drawer transitions on 360 Launcher.
I have found a not ideal work around, which is to use the gesture shortcuts in Next Launcher so that whatever homescreen I'm on, I just swipe up to open my app drawer. However my ultimate goal is to be able to open the apps from the edge bar.. Why is this so important?
Because, the whole killer app feature of the edge bar, which I keep stressing to people who ask what the point of it is, is that I can open or switch to other apps from whatever app I'm in without exiting to the home screen first or scrolling through the recent apps.
My workaround still doesn't allow this.. But it DOES allow me to completely hide the dock bar at the bottom and have a FULL screen of widgets on my home screen. Which is pretty
I now have all my most used apps on the edge bar so I no longer need the android app dock on the bottom. It's really pretty and ergonomic.
