[Q] bricked my epic - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was trying to revert th modem back eco5 so i could flash the EI22 modem. while flashing the ec05 modem in odin it got hung up. i unplug the phone. i tried it again and it wouldn't work then i got a phone with an arrow pointing to a computer. now i can't even get it into download mode and when i do it will stay for a few seconds and turn off. any ideas?

Either send to the unbrickable guy or bring it into sprint and say it was updating and then stopped working

Second that ^^^
I also recommend that you take it to a sprint repair store rather that a Corporate Sprint store. They will give you better service (from my experience) and arent so worried about rooted phones. They have the software to flash back to Stock if they can get it to boot. If not they will probibly replace it for free (if yo have insurance)

there are sprints stores that repair here. i took it to one and they said that they have to replace something on the inside. i have to wait for the part to come in. just trying to see if something can be done so i'm not without my phone. i can't live without it lol

the unbrickable mod has apparently been activated, something about the galaxy player having the same type of SOC iirc. so yeah go check the unbrickable thread the ressurrector thing needs testers

Well if they are going to fix your phone then i would say just wait. Sending it to Adam for the unbrickable mod would take much longer(if you even considered it). Although they do despritely need bricked phones to do thorough testing lol.
besides that if you want to keep tring to get into DL mode and then Odin it would be your best bet and hope it works so that you wont be without a phone.

Try Odin and download mode with the battery out. Connect to computer and put into download mode, Odin ec05 tar then when finished put battery back in and boot.

Please send the device my way so I can do a writeup for UnBrickable Mod. Assuming it was only the software flash, and no hardware damage has ocurred, I can recover it.
Once I get the device in hand and mod it, you'll have the first ever UnBrickable Epic 4G, a true development platform. Also, I can release a Heimdall One-Click back to stock and you'll never have to worry about bricking again.
Send me a PM and I'll take care of it. It would help out everyone.

so here's an update for anybody keeping up with this small thread. i just sent my epic to Adam. so hopefully the unbrickable mod will make it to the epic

Flashable ODIN tar to Stock

I was curious if there was any plan on making a flashable tar for Odin to return the phone to stock just in case you are unable to get into recovery and are trying to recover from a softbrick. Also would probably be the easiest way to get the phone ready for any warranty issues! Thanks

I'm sure if y'all donate and help bubby323 get his phone he'll put up the tar file.
He already did almost everything else without a phone.
Here is his link.

No doubt. I'm very hesitant to begin rooting/roming this bad boy without a good stock rom to revert back to JIC.
That post was from October 25. Fyi. Not all of us can donate after spending 600+ on our own phones. Not being negative, just stating that this message can be read by other devs to get their attention. Why is everyone here focused on one dev when there are a handful now who are more than capable?

Yeah, that post is from October and he still don't have the phone even though he was the first one here and has done A LOT already without the phone in hand. If you don't know then don't chime in. You want something, well you gotta give something in return.
There were plenty of bounties going around for different devs and they got there's within a week even though they hadn't done anything yet for the phone.
I know there are a handful that are capable, but it's obvious they haven't done it yet, Have they?
FYI it was a suggestion for you to donate not a demand. You were asking to get a file and I pointed to the best way to get it.

It was just my opinion dude. I never asked for anything, just bumped the thread. it's unfortunate that he hasn't had enough bounty to get his phone while others did, but we still got a great ROM and kernel from them. They didn't run away with the money. I appreciate what bubby has done and have nothing against him. My statement about not being able to donate was just to share that I would if I could. I am aware I am not being forced. there are great devs here and wish they could all have devices to help us move forward. All we can do is wait, not rushing anything, but raising awareness for other interested devs that could help Bubby.

When I was a noob, it wouldn't go near something like this unless I read that 200people have done it succesfully before me. I wouldn't even think of just flashing something unless it was cleary stated it was for my phone and had step by step instructions on what to do and I would confirm about 50x that it was for my phone before actually falshing it.
Now that I am no longer a noob and would like to consider myself a veteran at flashing, I even stay further away from these things. lol

+1 Back in 2009 when I first started modding (a Motorola Razr) I stumbled onto XDA. After getting my wizard 1st, and then my excalibur (t Mo Dash), I made sure I read everything thrice, even 4 times, before flashing. I was a lot more gung-ho back then. After totally bricking my Fender MT3G, I take more caution. I am super ocs now with my E4GT (best device I've ever owned), so I was just kidding about the guinea pig thing, lol.

Rooting Service

I figure to keep people from posting threads after threads saying "please help I bricked my epic" I figured it be easier to have someone do it for them. Since I have plenty of time I figured I do this. If you would like me to root your device simply pm and I will give you instructions on how I will remotely control your pc (if I do it remotely then make sure you have a nonstock usb cable for example a blackberry micro usb) or you can send it to me. If you send via ups etc then you'll be paying for back and forth.*Disclaimer*if anything happens which more than likely WON'T its not my fault BUT will try my best to fix it.
I doubt this will take off but why not put it out there.

Not a bad idea... in my opinion if you can't figure out how to root it you don't need it rooted though. The rooting methods are easy enough and qbking has made some easy to follow videos for everybody... my 12 year old niece rooted her epic following the video and she is no techie in any way! If she can do it everybody can! Not a hit to you though. I commend your efforts!

While I applaud the objective of your kind motives, I have to say that if someone can't root their phone on their own, they don't need it rooted. You have to be able to troubleshoot to fix problems, which requires an understanding of what is happening on your device.

Id say thats noble, but i agree that if you can't learn to root it yourself then you don't really understand the gravity of what root access is capable of.
Second, if I send you my phone, and you root it, flash CWM and brick it them I'm SOL... And if it works before you touch it, but not after, then it would totally be your fault. You may not be liable, but your hands make it your fault.
anyhow cool idea, maybe find a way to guarantee or insure your work and i bet people would pay 10 or 20 bucks for rooting.

I believe a few people have said it already. But don't use from manager to flash recoveries. Especially the touch one. You will brick your phone and can't fix it. Only a JTAG service would fix it or a replacement by sprint. Either way good luck and read up on stuff before you try it out.

OH Shix, Dang Dawg, I didn't know there was a such thing as a soft/full brick! I am lucky, I was using mobile odin and flashed the md5 check instead of the tar for fb21 modem and my phone was acting very similar but I just flashed the ONE CLICK EL29 and I was back to stock. hope if you havent tried that, you do and it works for you. I didn't like the touch cwm. but now I am deleting it from sdcard so i dont mistakenly soft/full brick my device. Keep us updated!
UPDATE
UPDATE
after using odin to unroot/unbrick my epic4gt and having still it fail to turn on passed the boot screen, i took my busted phone back to sprint on monday. told them what the problem was, "my phone wont go passed the first screen when i turn it on". they said "ok, we'll just erase everything off, should be as good as new".
i stood around waiting for about 45 minutes, i was so bored i even shamefully sent out a tweet from an iphone..smh. sales associate then came back to me saying," ive never seen anything like this, nothing will work on it, you must have rooted this phone?" my response was "i have done nothing to that phone".
with a kinda upset smirk on his face he says, "it had to be rooted buuuuut since we have no proof we will order you a phone for free, come pick it up friday."
life has been so tough w/out my epic for a whole week, happy that i get my new one on friday
You know...
I'm starting to wonder how I feel about ppl that brick their phones, through fault of their Own, then take them into sprint claiming the "update broke it!", "i never rooted that! i have No Idea what you're talking about!", and I wonder if this is going to make it harder for people with Legitimate issues to get replacements, and affect the way Sprint looks at rooting our phones in general. This Affects Their Bottom Line.

UPDATE
after using odin to unroot/unbrick my epic4gt and having still it fail to turn on passed the boot screen, i took my busted phone back to sprint on monday. told them what the problem was, "my phone wont go passed the first screen when i turn it on". they said "ok, we'll just erase everything off, should be as good as new".
i stood around waiting for about 45 minutes, i was so bored i even shamefully sent out a tweet from an iphone..smh. sales associate then came back to me saying," ive never seen anything like this, nothing will work on it, you must have rooted this phone?" my response was "i have done nothing to that phone".
with a kinda upset smirk on his face he says, "it had to be rooted buuuuut since we have no proof we will order you a phone for free, come pick it up friday."
life has been so tough w/out my epic for a whole week, happy that i get my new one on friday

Congrats... next time dont start a new thread about something that already had a million other threads and a Official How I Bricked my phone thread.... I KNOW YOU SAW IT.....lol
Yeah say what you want but I pay 8 dollars a month to sprint for insurance so weather its my fault or not they should replace my device which they did and I could give a **** less how it effects everything because I pay for insurance.

DONT WANT A BRICK? Check here

As of right now, the roms for your S3 are not meant to be used on other S3 variants. Bricks might happens or a soft one might happen. Before flashing a Rom make sure you are in the right development section an you read the entire op, twice. Until other devs or experienced users find a way to make them cross compatible, please refrain from using other carriers S3 roms.
I am working on this so that all roms will work on all carriers

That's slick!:good:
hard brick - a pretty paperweight (tonight)
should have been more careful, soft bricked the phone, 2 times trying to change the dpi.
once trying to flash a rom - the rom flash, took it to QHSUSB_DLOAD mode, not impressed but i'll take this downtime as a time to relax.
Another way to avoid a brick; Don't use a mod, theme, tool or ROM until it's confirmed by multiple people in the community that it's working properly. Read the last 3-4 pages of a thread

Simple...
Do like we all have done: read everything you can find and then ask an intelligent question. Otherwise, XDA denizens get grumpy... :cyclops:
Aint' that the truth, I'm one of them!

I agree with you, I ended up with a soft brick stuck at the samsung glowing logo after trying to unroot because I got a crack the front plastic near the headphone jack. I managed to reset the flash counter and install the rom but odin failed at the end. Now I'm hesitant to flash another ROM. Anyone else here waiting for JellyBean Rom? Definitely take your time and always make sure your computer installs the drivers before doing anything! I got BB to exchange it for me since they couldn't get it to boot and the mystery crack wasn't my fault. I only had it for like 3 days IN A CASE TOO. Happy Flashing dudes.
I'm just glad i saw a forum for the gs3. I would've bricked my phone after i got it.
Another bricker my own fault went to unroot to take in for service and went and loaded a wrong .tar file of the stock system. Anyway...not looking for sympathy..just wanted to say thanks for the forum that gave me the tools to fix my mistake

Just a question that seems to pertain to this thread, what's the difference between sprint sgs3 android development and original android development?

Original is usually built from scratch/source. Android development is based from stock, leaks or ports
