Can someone try to do a gps fix outside in airplane mode and tell me how long it takes to fix?
My Nexus S takes a while (1-3 mins), so I'm curious if the barometer helps at all.
I'll check. 10 mins....
Back... so here is what I did.
I put my phone in airplane mode.
Switched the phone off.
Switched it back on, still in airplane mode.
Fired up GPS status. Started the stopwatch.
It took 2 seconds to switch on the GPs receiver.
At 14 seconds it located 6 satellites.
At 18 seconds it located 8 satellites.
At 48 seconds it got a Fix on 8 sats.
Then it knew where I was.
I then force closed GPS Status.
Then the GPS switched itself off.
I then fired up GPS status again.
It took 2 seconds to switch on the GPS.
At 7 seconds it had a fix on 6 sats.
It knew where I was.
At 14 seconds it had a fix on 8 sats.
Should point out that I'm in the UK, but my GN has US server for GPS assistance file. When I root, I'll fix that!

Thanks!
That seems a lot better than my Nexus S, although I expected it to be a bit faster still.
Will do the same w/Nexus S and see how it compares.
Just for fun, I tried again. Same procedure as last time.
0:00:02 GPS on
0:00:15 1 Sat
0:00:36 2 Sats
0:00:38 3 Sats
0:00:41 4 Sats and a Fix! Never noticed a fix on just 4 before
0:00:54 5 Sats and still fix
0:01:01 6 sats and still fix.
Then with my phone still on, killed GPS status and got a fix on 6 Sats in 10 seconds.
So not so good as earlier.
Just north of London, cold night not a cloud in the sky, just lots of stars.
Now if only I could get my PC to ADB to my GNex so I can root it and update GPS.conf
In Airplane Mode you won't have a-gps working, so the gps will either do a hot start (if the gps has been used not long before, in this case it can be very fast ) or a cold-start and will have to download ephemerids from the satellites (can take several minutes depending on how good the reception is).

I have had several instances now where an application using the GPS reported a position that was many hours old. This has definitely happened with NAV4ALL and AT&T FamilyMap. I'm pretty sure it has also happened with Google Maps.
The latest instance was last night. I was in my car at 7:30 PM and had used NAV4ALL briefly while stopped and had a good GPS fix. At 10:00PM I was home (13 miles away) and used FamilyMap to locate my phone which was in the house and not where the GPS would usually work. FamilyMap reported my phone still at the 7:30 position with 37 yds of accuracy, which was true 2.5 hours before.
Same thing happened at BDL airport Weds. night when NAV4ALL showed my position 22 miles away at the hotel I had cheched out of 8 hours before, with 53 yds accuracy. I had used the GPS the night before at that location. In this case I was also at a place where the GPS would not be able to get a position fix.
I have a stock AT&T Tilt 2 ROM with the OEM radio ROM that came with it (4.48.25.20, which otherwisehas outstanding GPS and data transfer performance vs. my Fuze).
Anybody else experiencing this? Is there a way to see tomorrow's lottery winning numbers today using the same time/space wormhole in this phone?

Using GPSMod or anything like that? It'll continue to send the last known fix until the GPS warms back up, I've seen many times it report me in my last location for a bit until the GPS starts giving live data and suddenly it jump.
No GPS manipulation programs/cabs. No unusual registry tweeks.
I have confirmed this bahavior is repeatable. If FamilyMap polls for a position and the GPS cannot provide a fix, the last GPS position fix will be returned by FamilyMap - even if it is many hours and miles away. This pretty much makes FamilyMap worthless on a Tilt 2, and some applications.

Time to start isolating this "FamilyMap" as simply just a poor program.. Try other things, one free/easy/obvious one is Google Maps. Set it up to use the GPS, exit, do your thing, then when it's time to try out the GPS fire it up and see what happens.
Just so you're not alarmed, if you haven't used it yet, what I generally see out of Google Maps is it gets a cellular fix first (ie: cellid estimate) which is sometimes half a mile or more away from the location, then as soon as the GPS fixes it'll move to your correct location, so sometimes you see it appear as if it's gotten a fix then shift some reasonably small distance.
Hi,
I am planning to use Endomondo for skiing for the whole day (09:00-16:00) to track my progress.
Two questions:
1) To save battery I will switch to Airplane Mode. GPS accuracy will be ok?
2) Endomondo have a setting to save battery. Dont know what it means. It says that accuracy wont change. Strange. Has anybody tried to ski all day long without charging with Endomondo?

1. No. GPS is disabled when you are in airplane mode. Mobile Data connections (3G, wifi) and your phone connection (you will not be able to make or receive phone calls) when you're in airplane mode.
2. I don't know what endomondo does specifically, but most GPS apps, when they say they save battery, do so by recording your location at longer intervals. For example, the app, in a battery saving mode, may record your location every 8 or 10 seconds, instead of 4 or 5 seconds.
I use my Galaxy Nexus while bicycling, I find that 7 or 8 seconds produces pretty accurate GPS trace (To record where I've been) but it depends if you are surrounded by buildings or lots of trees, which would prevent your device from reading the satellites and getting an accurate device.
Overall, I'd advise you to experiment, 2-3 times for an hour or so for each setting in endomondo (the battery-saver) and non-battery saver and see what's the difference. Don't use airplane mode, you won't be able to get an accurate GPS measurement.
Thanks!!!!!!!
Will try what you suggested.

Actually, it's not. Turning on airplane mode leaves GPS on, at least on a stock Galaxy Nexus. I just tested this. Makes sense, since a GPS receiver does not transmit.
Takes longer to get a position fix, though, without AGPS. Accuracy seems unaffected, though I haven't tested that thoroughly. Just give it a minute or two to lock on to all the satellites.
Also, you can turn back on Wifi in airplane mode as well. Not really relevant here, though.
If it takes time to catch the satelites its a bit risky to lose gps once I will step into gondola to go up the mountain.
Just tested and it really took time to lock on sats without AGPS

Hi,
So the combination of GPS Status and Toolbox Pro and Fasterfix allows me to find a bunch of satellites on my Wildfire S fairly quick, less than 30 seconds. But a lot of times it wont lock on for at least a few minutes even if I have 10+ satellites! Here are some screenshots of GPS Status and Toolbox:

You can see in the links I've got 10/10, 11/11 and 12/12 satellites but still no fix?
Any suggestions? I think I've tried just about every setting I can find!
Also I am running kantry123's JELLY KING v2.0 ROM.
Thanks!
i'm using jellyking 2.0 and after 2-3 minutes fix satellites without using any app.
even try to walk on searching satellites because if you stay the same place, the satellites are harder fix your location
Not sure what it is, but I haven't been able to get a solid GPS fix since I got the phone. Any other phone I use may take a minute, but it'll get a pretty accurate fix afterward - 50 feet or less. And this is in the same exact place.
I sat with the phone and the GPS Test app by Chartcross initially, and had 24 satellites in view. I went and downloaded FasterGPS and updated the GPS for US servers (since the Mini came from France I believe), and now I can get between 3 and 6 in use, but it only locks very rarely, and even when it does, it's only to like 500 feet in accuracy. As I'm typing, it randomly jumped to 7 satellites, accuracy bounced between 200 and 300 feet...and a few seconds later it went back to no lock and going between 3 and 6 in use.
Suggestions? I already rooted the phone, as well as installed Xposed and Crossbreeder. And of course, I have all proper GPS settings turned on.
EDIT: I went and did that simple fix all around the web of tightening the screws...didn't seem to help much. I went outside, and had no problem getting like 20/23 satellites, accuracy to like 5 feet. But as I go inside, I lose accuracy/satellites, until I get to my apartment and have nothing again. Is the S4 Mini's GPS antennae just weaker than other's?
When indoors, did you turn your wifi on?

Nope, always used data for the phones. And even using Wifi on the S4 Mini doesn't seem to help in terms of a GPS fix.
I've noticed on all 3 android phones I've had, that gps generally doesn't work indoors.
I did get a faster fix outdoors using the app GPS Status and updating the A-GPS data from within the Tools menu.
You should also try moving in one direction as you are trying to get a fix outdoors - always works for me.
So I have been experiencing this weird intermittent GPS dropping problem for months now. I thought it was due to corrupted AGPS, but I recently isolated it using the GPS test app.
When running on battery, I get decent SNF of high thirties and accuracy within 10 to 13 feet.
As soon as I connect the power cable, SNF drops to 15 or below on all satellites and my accuracy shoots up to over 300 feet. Also, Waze/Maps drop and are not able to lock or even figure out my current location.
Is there a way to fix this?
