Greetings, I have this dilemma. My friend has the Epic 4g which was running froyo 2.2.1 I believe. It also had one click root 2.5 installed but still running on the stock firmware. She asked me to unroot it so she could update to froyo 2.3.5.
She backed up all her information using titanium backup. After updating to 2.3.5 she attempted to restore all of her data but titanium backup said it needed to be rooted in order to restorethe data. I attempted to install the latest one click root but I keep getting this message about adb not working and to try again. I apologize I do not have the device in front of me to tell you exactly what was said. I will attempt to install it later on today. I just seeking advice on any other methods to install one click root?
I'm not for sure the one click root works with 2.3.5 to be honest with u but search the forum for the newest clockworkmod. Should be 5 something and its legit for it... anyone else to chime in and correct me go for it

One click roots do not work on Gingerbread. It would have been easier to flash a GB prerooted ROM while still on Froyo like this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340385&highlight=deodexed+EI22
Now that she did the OTA you will need to follow this:

Well it looks like my phone is g2g. I updated cwm, the modem, and applied that GPS fix. All the bugs I had with froyo appear to be gone and my phone is working like I think it should have when I first bought it. But I guess that's what you get for going with bleeding edge hardware. Now Ill just what for that cyanogenmod to leave the alpha stages and research some of the other roms. (Or pretend that ICS comes out for the epic haha).
I wonder if sprint will release another update to fix the GPS and any other bugs that are floating around...

No, because the average Epic user on the street thinks their phone works great. I know several. Only us extreme users notice the bugs.

One Click is a no-go!!!
However, all my frozen apps still have not appeared in my app drawer so I'm happy with that.
FYI, although I have seen people post that they re-rooted via SuperOneClick after updating to 2.3.6, I find this highly suspect.. it did not work for me as well as many others and I know what I am doing
Ended up re-rooting via Odin which was successful, but I seriously doubt SuperOneClick will work for anyone...
Also, I suggest a factory reset before or after the update.. there were a few glitches that did not go away until a Factory Reset..
Other than that, have at it! ROM runs superb.

So right now I'm stock, not rooted. I was going to wait unit the OTA update and then root with Superoneclick. Are you guys saying that I won't be able to do this after the update? I'm a noob when it comes to rooting, and paranoid about screwing up, so I was hoping to avoid Odin.

And yes, I updated via Kies although knowing that it will remove root... I can't really recommend it so much. I'm gonna have to Odin now anyway.

Can I do the T-Mobile update while rooted on a custom rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This is going to be a hot item for most of us with rooted phones. Simply no way of knowing what will happen should we let the update go through. And just to be safe, most of us would prefer to cancel the update.
I followed someone else's advice and used Titanium Backup Pro to:
- wipe data for "Device Manager"
- "freeze" the same application
The nag is gone. I reckon this method should work for everyone with rooted phones.
Otherwise, we'd need to wait to respective ROM teams to release their own patches etc.
TB team should see a nice uptick in app purchases in next few days. The app is well worth it, so if you been on a fence, get it now, $6 well spent.
[Q]OTA Update but i'm rooted?

i am rooted with stock rom and receive the update, np at all. In your case, you have a different rom and not stock. odin probably is the best bet.
bought sgs2 last weekend and rooted using superoneclick and at the end of the day, receive ota update and update my sgs2 and i forgot that i am rooted. i left my phone to finish updating and when i came back, its up and have 2.3.6 uVKL1, did not receive any problem. battery great, wifi calling is there. im just surprised it let me update even though my phone is rooted. btw stock rom, stock kernel just rooted.
I think I'll just wait until somebody comes out with an official sticky solution because I didn't flash any ROM to mine, I just rooted it.... I don't know what to do either... Until someone posts a solution there will be several posts pertaining to this subject

a lot of XDA links are down so i suggest using the stuff on theunlockr.com it's pretty direct
dl kies or drivers (personally i just dl drivers)
run odin and flash CWM
you can then flash a rom to get root or flash superuser to get root.
I did the 'unlockr' method but it took me like 6 tries to get su installed through CWM.
Keep trying if it fails. It will eventually work.
It isn't too much different from the other methods floating around the forums. Links work which is always a plus as someone else has mentioned.

No it looks like he loaded an old sgs4g file on his microsd or something because he use to own one..
anyways.. it looks like your phone is just doing a bootloop. if you have a backup just nandroid restore.
Not sure what this sgs4g file is? is it a ROM/Kernel? or some backup data?
if you flashed a ROM/Kernel.. and you're only getting boot loops you're fking lucky. Flash a t989 ROM/kernel and it should fix it
if you just restored some data. just wipe your data and caches/dalvik cache

Easiest method, which I just used myself today, is the ZergRush Exploit.
You won't be able to install custom ROM's because this method does not install a new Kernel with Recovery. But it is the easiest method I have found and gives you ROOT if that is all you are looking for. It can be found through the stickies, but here is the link.

From 1st hand experience on a T-MO GS2 (and also what others have posted), the ZergRush has fewer successes on the T-Mo units. I tried ran it last night on a new phone and didn't do anything. I ended up using one of the other rooting methods. Not sure if it's hit or miss, or what the issue may be.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

It should be fine. But make sure you have a copy of the original in case something goes wrong.
Actually, I don't see why you don't just install cwm or twrp and the the root zip. That way you keep what you're running but gain root.
And thinking for a second you have to install cwm or twrp to install what you're asking about so it only makes sense to just install the root zip instead of the other ROM. Unless you want the few tweaks from it.

Thanks Benzoman.:good:
Could you please point me to the twrp download that can be used in Odin for 10.3.1? I have seached the site & (again) just going round in circles.

Hi,
Unsure about whether the firmware version used in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2495122 will work on samsung galaxy tab 3.10 GT-P5210 with firmware P5210XXUAMFA. Can anyone please advise? I need rooted stock rom so as to retain original apps + look & feel (it is a work tablet for my wife)
Thanks
Damian

sorry for the delay... TBH, I didn't note my original build anywhere, but I would assume that it hasn't changed, as I have ONLY applied this custom recovery/root process... everything else is still stock. Right now, it reads as JDQ39.P5210XXUAMG6. I *believe* that it is good for any 52xx.. read through the thread, I am pretty sure the question came up there. IF you want to use the Sammy update when (if) an update is rolled out for our device, it will fail. The system is recognized as having been modified. There may be a way around this now, but I plan to apply any upgrade manually... if at all.
Since I have your attention, do you know of any decent custom ROMs for this thing?? I looked a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much out there:fingers-crossed:

Thanks for your response! Sorry I do not. I imagine down the road there will be more development for the tab 3 but I took one look at the development and realized I would rather pay a hundred dollars more and get the device that has a processor that people know how to work with (Note10.1). Also has front facing speakers and the s pen. Sure it hasn't had the upgrade from 4.1.2 yet but I'm okay with that... that's why I root. Best of luck!
