[Q] problem with hboots - phone stuck on boot splash - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so its a looong story
here's how it started -
i had runnymede desire 5.2 cm7r2
it was laggy (even with class 10 sd - maybe my sd is not properly supported with desire)
so i thought changing to stock hboot would speed up things
so i flashed stock hboot using gold card - PB99IMG.zip
then flashed runnymede aio 2.4 on stock hboot with xd2sdx
then booted normaly - but the rom showed low phone storage message whenever i tried to do anything - browser mainly
and i got lot of FCs - market gmail, facebook, etc.
i couldnt install anything on the phone using market - it wouldnt even start
then i read somewhere that xd2sdx is useless with stock hboot
so then i thought ok i'll use cm7r2 hboot only
then i got the runnymede aio 2.5 for cm7r2 hboot
i flashed cm7r2hboot using gold card
i tried to flash the rom - it gave cant open /cache/recovery/log error
then when i booted to recovery it said "E:Can't open /CACHE/recovery/log"
so i thought that the recovery is not working properly due to flashing the hboots
so i flashed the 4ext recovery (recommended on the runnymede aio thread) again using the gold card
again flashed the rom - again couldnt boot
stuck on boot splash screen of alpharev
so what am i doing wrong??
i put the hboot and recovery zip on my gold card renaming them to PB99IMG.zip - boot phone and it asks if i want to update
so i update
is it something wrong there??
also i directly downgraded to stock hboot by flashing pb99img.zip
is that wrong???
do i need to flash pb99img downgrade zip first???
if so will it change the s-off state???
or is it like -
i have cm7r2 hboot
then i by mistake flashed stock hboot without downgrade
so i flash downgrade zip??
and then again flash cm7r2 zip??
please help
would really appreciate
lot of problems and i cant find appropriate solutions
searched a lot - but searches lead to incomplete solutions
thats y i got stuck at this problem - sooo many searches just got mixed up in my mind.......

please delete thread
OK
it was very stupid of me.
I admit that.
i wont tell what stupidity i was doing.
please delete this thread.

ClockworkMod broken?

Hey there.
I just got myself a (white) Desire with SLCD:
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
RADIO-5.11.05.27
Since i want to install oxygen2 RC7 i rooted the phone first with unrevoked3.
It seems that it worked since "Rom Manager" got su. But booting into Recovery gives me following lines:
E:cant mount cache:recovery/command
E:cant find misc:
because of that i cant do a nandroid backup and i guess flashing a new rom also wont work.
so i tried to re-root the Desire with unrevoked several times (using Linux Ubuntu) but nothing changed. Furthermore unrevoked told me, that my firmware was too new (because i'm already rooted?)
so i tried flashing AmonRa 2.0 with unrevoked. wont work and firmware still too new.
so i tried:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img in cmd (after downloading Android SDK)
but it said something about signature verify fail.
After a while i found a workaround by booting the AmonRa recovery first with:
fastboot boot recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img
but it told me something about FAILED <remote: not allowed>
I guess flashing the stock rom from shippedRoms and re-rooting the desire wont work since i dont believe that flashing a ROM is possible. Also i'm new to this stuff (rooted and flashe Desire with AMOLED before) and would prefer to not brick my phone
any ideas?
(btw: please excuse my bad english)
edit: i can't even wipe the phone. if i try it gives me the mentioned lines from above.
Have you read the stickie in general? There the pvt4 situation is explained.
Also a ruu (stuff from shiped roms) does not require root.
So you can unroot and use unrevoked again with the right recovery image or if your comfortable S-offing you could do that and use fastboot to flash the recovery image.
Keep in mind that you are the only one responsible for your phone, no one else.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
thanks!!
i overlooked this thread. As soon as the desire gets home (actually it belongs to my girlfriend) i'm gooing to try again by flashing RUU and rooting again with AmonRa Recovery since i don't know if S-offing the device would be the best idea.
Thanks so far. I will report in time.
hey.
i just found out, that the phone is a branded one (vodafone_fr).
So just in case i created a goldcard as long as the device is running.
I downloaded following RUUs:
OTA_Bravo_Vodafone FR_(A1 Österreich)_von 1.21.163.2 zu 2.10.163.1
OTA_Bravo_Froyo_Vodafone FR_(A1 Österreich) von 2.10.163.1_zu 2.33.163.1_R
i renamed it to PB99IMG.zip, put it on the SD Card and restarted the phone while holding volumeDown.
After a while it gives me "PB99IMG.zip.....No image or wrong image"
After reboot nothing changed.
Is there any possibility to get a working RUU for my Desire (2.33.163.1).
Or HAVE i to go via alpharev S-off?
Man, with my PVT1 Amoled Desire the whole procedure was done within half an hour.
greetz
You don't rename the RUU itself, you need to extract the ROM.zip file from the RUU and rename that. Follow this guide I posted on another thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10509780&postcount=102
Hey guys and thanks for your help.
I managed to get root via unrevoked and flash AmonRA by uninstalling zysploit FIRST. Now unrevoked didnt tell me anymore that my firmware ist too new.
Summarizing: If yout get something like this after rooting with unrevoked:
E:cant mount cache
E:cant find misc
than u just have to re-root your desire with unrevoked. This time you have to load a custom recovery (i recommend AmonRa 2.0 since it worked for me) and deinstall Rom Manager and zyploit from your phone before plugging in you phone.
In the Linux Terminal it still says "Error n=-1 ... no such device " three times but it stills works.
Now it was possible for me to run a nandroid backup and to partition the sd
THANKS guys

[Q] Cannot flash radio or ROM to HTC Desire

Hi, total newbie here to flashing etc so forgive my dumbness, but its getting on my tits now!! I am trying to flash my phone to Leedroid HD v3.3.3
I have a HTC Desire running 2.3 stock rom on radio 5.17.05.23.
I have managed to get as far as downgrading my HBOOT to 6.93.1002, turning S-OFF and installing Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4 recovery.
I have downloaded the recommended radio 5.17.05.08 but that is as far as I can get. When i put the radio zip file (or even just the radio.img file) onto the root on my sd card and load the HBOOT up, it runs through everything saying no file or wrong file found?
When I try and install zip from recovery it tells me that "amend scripting is no longer supported" amongst other things?
Can someone tell me where I am going wrong please??? Thanks
Afaik, you don't need updating radio, during have s-off. Have you tried flash ROM?
Yeah everytime I try to flash anything it doesn't work. Nothing will load up it seems during HBOOT and the Recovery won't load anything, just comes up with that error message.
Another thing is that when I go into ROM Manager, it says that it can't find superuser and that I need to root my phone??? Have I missed something here, i thought I had already done that?
sorted it, seemed I hadn't wiped the phone etc etc
can someone get rid of this post please
Are you solved your problem now?

I was running an Euroskank CM7 rom, but I decided to flash newest Tiamat kernel.
So I did and after reboot, things worked fine. But after few reboots, the phone stopped seeing SD Card and the system booted very crippled because I am using mount2sd script. So, I though that it's because the kernel was too new. Newer kernels have the well-known problem with timingout too soon while waiting for the sdcard to initialise. This leaves some SDcards undetected during 9 out of 10 boots.
The only strange thing was that the card was also invisible from CWM recovery which never had this issue.
Anyway, the only way left for me to fix it was to try to flash *.img files from nandroid backup using fastboot. However, the only thing I achieved by doing that is that now my phone doesn't boot at all into system. After the S-OFF splash screen it restarts, and goes back into recovery.
I have since uploaded AmonRA 2.0.0 recovery and tried copying to the phone /system/ and flasing boot.img from oen of the cm7 euroskank kangs, but it didn't change a thing.
The phone still does not boot and it cannot mount the sdcard (I tried three - two are know for having this timingout problem on newer kernels, but the third one I _think_ was compatible with all kernels).
So, what can I do at this point? I am running linux but can switch to windows if necessary.
Try flashing 4ext recovery, u can click the PB99IMG 4ext recovery in my sig and download the zip file and extract it then flash the recovery.img or u can do it the PB99IMG method, instructions in the link. Then try restoring nandroid or flash the rom again. 4ext recovery is way better than CWM or Amon-ra

Yes, I know it is better. Unfortunately it is also unusable because it is using the newer kernel than CWM or AmonRA and therefore is burdened with the bug (affecting all linux systems, not just android, but while on computer it is an inconvenience, on android it is a killer) of not seeing some sdcards.
However, I managed to solve the problem using paragraph 13 from this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275632
I just wish I found it 10 hours earlier.

[ROOT] HTC Desire stuck on Bootscreen after evo³

Hi,
I need some help solving my root problem with my European HTC Desire. I recently got the device itself from a friend. Since both noobs with Android and rooting/flashing, neither him nor me know if it is a branded phone or not. I assume, it's not branded since I couldn't see any brand on the device or in the menu so far. Also, it's still Froyo (Android 2.2) and looks pretty standard.
Same hard facts:

My aim is to get a CUSTOM ROM (preferably mild wild's cm7 JG) on the device. For rooting, I would like to use the unrevoked³ tool, since I didn't find a step-by-step instruction for revolutionary (besides, I don't like to give away my serial number...not trying being paranoid, but, you know..)
For the unrevoked method, I followed the Noob Proof Video Tutorial. I am stuck at "Waiting for reboot..." (in this video @ 2:02 min).
My guess, without knowing for certain what the problem was, is that my HTC Desire doesn't reboot correctly even without connecting it with USB-port, etc. It may be kinda broken (I had tons of bootloops, freezes, etc, pp). Maybe I somehow damaged the phone with the first try to root it? I tried anything I read here during the last 3 days (clear storage, soft reset, bootloader reboot, etc).
I need to get the battery out and then wait for good 10 Minutes, to even boot normally. Often, I just come to enter my PIN for the SIM card, when there's a reboot. Often it reboots even right after the second boot screen ("quietly brilliant").
MAybe it's a heated processor? idk, but even really long pauses wouldn't make it reboot correctly.
I disconnected the USB cable and took the battery out, then after 10 minutes, I put them back in and obviously evo³ continued the process from there ("system to settle...might take a minute" or sth similar). However, my device just rebooted there again and then I had the error code "Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try again."
This is logical, since it reboots when it wants but never when it's supposed to ****ty phoen ^^ (excuse my language)
Any ideas?
If your phone can boot normally, without any reboots, use revolutionary to s-off and install a custom recovery.

Apparantly my phone doesn't boot normally
Thx though
Edit: wow, now it's even stuck during the second bootscreen at "quie..." of "quietly brilliant"
Best would be to flash the 2.3 RUU (sig, put in on sd-card and boot in bootloader), and use revolutionary. You will lose all your data, but at least the phone will boot, and you will root it.
Well, except if unrevoked did install a custom recovery. Check that too.

No, unrevoked didn't make a custom recovery...the boot menu looks all the same.
However, things are really messed up now. I put the 2.3 RUU image on my SD-Card and booted it via bootloader. An update process began. After completion, the phone rebootet several times just up to the HTC-logo, vibrated about 20 times (maybe the 7-times stuff a couple of times in a row).
Nothing works now. I couldn't even boot anything now.
Also, my bootloader shows HBOOT 1.02.001 now.
Radio is 5.17.05.23
Need help!
Edit: after point 9 in the picture, the device reboots but doesn't boto further than the HTC Logo. THen it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again, then it vibrates 7 times until it reboots again...and so on, and so on...all in a loop.
Edit 2: after having the phone rested on my table over night, this morning I put the battery back in and it worked...a bit. It booted correctly and I configured the settings (debugging-mode, etc). However, trying to do unrevoked again, the device stuck at rebooting again.
Still need help, plz
Edit 3: so desperate --> plz help
You don't run unrevoked on it. If it's still in a bootloop, then flash the ruu again, then use Revolutionary to s-off. DO NOT USE OR DO ANYTHING ELSE.
1. Flash the RUU again.
2. Quick configure.
3. Use revolutionary.io.
4. Install a custom rom.

Okay, and where do I get the beta key from? I mean, I am supposed to put my S/N somewhere, but I don't know where.
Sorry, but I couldn't find any instruction on that.
Edit: my bad, I had javascript disabled
Tried it again: SUCCESS!!!
How do I get a Custom ROM on the device now? Can I continue at STEP FIVE - Partitioning Your Sd Card With Gparted in this Noob Proof Video Tutorial or does revolutionary already has some of those further steps included (like preparing SD-card, etc)?
Edit 2:
Okay, revolutionary doesn't root, it just makes S-OFF. I found this perfect step-to-step guide which is in German, though. Sorry for that...

So it worked. You're welcome.
To root, you either install a custom rom from recovery, or you stay stock, and flash SuperSU from recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Scroll down and download the CWM flashable zip.

Well, it worked so far...I rooted und S-OFFed it, I think I even updated the radio to 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17 via the app "ROM Manager".
Now I try to partition the SD card, since doing that via ROM Manager from within the phone didn't work, BECAUSE MY PHOEN STILL DOESN'T BOOT CORRECTLY :/
(Sorry, not shouting at you...just let stuff out) ^^
Okay, I'm stuck with partitioning. Currently my Bootloader-Menu shows me that I have HBOOT 6.93-1002. Should I go to http://alpharev.nl/ and rename that
PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip to PB99IMG.zip and boot the device? What is this bravo_alphaspl-cm7r2.img?
I'm so sorry, but I think I messed everything up. Arrrgh
cm7r2 hboot is a different phone memory layout. Stock hboot has 250 mb system, cm7r2 has less system alocated memory, for smaller roms, and gives you more data space.
If you want to patition your sd-card, install 4ext recovery.

Yes, I want to do that (even with 4ext recovery). My questions herefor is, if
1) this is within the correct sequence (since I still doesn't have the mildwild cm7 custom ROM installed yet)
2) how I do it with 4ext? do I need to rename the files given at http://alpharev.nl/ ?
3) when I successfully partitioned the SD-card, how do I continue? There are 2 Parts of the mildwild cm7 custom rom...
Thx in advance
Edit: I did anything as suggested in the instructions (put it on SD-card, update yes, reboot no). Then I chose "Recovery" but nothing happens. THe phone is just stuck on the HTC-logo bootscreen :/
Edit 2: okay I followed abaaabbbs instructions in another thread/your sig and installed fastboot via adb. (See attch.)
Now I need to wait a while with battery removed since my phone doens't boot at all. I can only enter bootloader menu etc, but not regular boot to android on phone itself. always stuck with HTC-logo and/or vibrating 7 times , then rebooting to htc-logo again... :/

I can't tell if it worked. It seemed to work, but I can't boot any further than into the bootloader-menu :/
Shouldn't formatting take a while? It jsut took 1s via adb
MAybe I installed the wrong radio beforehand? I am so lost ...
Shouldn't my HBOOT say CM7r2 instead of 6.93.1002 ?
I can't enter recovery at all...

As above, I want to install mildwild cm7. I would prefer to isntall 4ext instead of CWM again....
I'm on mildwild 7 great rom yes I would recommend 4ext recovery, have u downloaded all parts of mildwild an put them on the root of ur SD card

Shouldn't I change HBOOT to cm7r2 first and make the partitions with 4ext first?
Or do I do it all in one step?
Edit: in one of the seldom times the phone actually booted to regular android, I installed the 4ext recovery again - this time via astro data manager (installed the 4ext-recovery-APK from SD-card). Well, when I enter the bootloader and chose "RECOVERY", it still is stuck at the HTC-Logo...

[Q] Rooted Desire Can't install a2sd , can't gain S-OFF,can't flash new recovery

Hi everyone,
I had my HTC Desire rooted and running CyanogenMod 7 since a couple of years ago.
I remeber I used Unrevoked to root it but I can't tell if I did s-off it back then.
All those years I was able to partially move the apps to the SD withou much effort.
My nightmare begun when I recently flashed the CM10.1 VJ Jelly Bean 4.2.2 v6.3 ROM
The problem is I am not able to install a2sd and overcome HTC Desire's lack of memory.
When exectuing "a2sd install" I realized I didn't had a sd-ext partition.
So, next step would be to partition the 4Gb SDCard half FAT32 , half EXT4.
I have tried to do it using several Windows apps (Easeus Partition Master, Minitool Partition Edition) , also with Gparted on Ubuntu thru VMWare . In any of those cases the phone wouldn't recognize the SD , neither inside the system , neither in recovery . It is detected as damaged and I must reformat thru the System in order to use the SD .
My current recovery is ClockWorkMod Recovery 2.5.0.7 and I can't partition thru it.
As recommended in this thread I had tried to flash the latest 4ext Recovery using fastboot in the command prompt but I have no success, probably because the phone isn't S-OFF.
Ok. So I tried to gain S-OFF using Revolutionary. Also with no success.
I was getting the following message:
"Sending in Caroline...
Retrieving Caroline from certain doom...
Retrying Caroline...
Caroline failed, but had this to say: entation fault"
As suggested in that forum I have tried flashing a Rooted gingerbread stock sense Rom (HTC_Oficial_Stock_2.3.3_signed , downloaded from that forum) and use Revolutionary . Also no success.
I kept receiving "failed to get root" message .
I have tried using AlphaRev 1.8 and Unrevoked 3. No success at all.
I flashed back the CM10 VJ Jelly Bean Rom. Tried it all again.
And still the same results.
I am probably missing some step or some information, althought I had read different forums during the whole weekend.
There is any good soul out there that could help me ?

lol did you even read his post?!? His problem is that he cant get s-off cause revolutionary is giving errors.
From what i read it seems like you have done everything correctly except using those windows tools for partitioning. Use this guide for partitioning. But like you said, you will first need s-off to flash 4ext and partition.
You could try flashing this ruu through hboot. Put the zip on the root of your sd card (dont rename it) and then boot the phone into the bootloader using volume down + power. It will search for the file, and will ask you if you want to install it. Press volume up and user power to select yes, and then reboot. After flashing the ruu successfully try running revolutionary again, and see if it works.

Thank you very much chromium96 !
Everything is rocking and rolling . The "key" I was missing was to flash the RUU . After that Revolutionary worked just fine, I was able to S-OFF the phone , flahed 4Ext, partitioned my SD . and right now I'm downloading Paranoid Android 3.56 to give it a try.
