Hello all, I have the Xperia Play 4G from AT&T running 2.3.3 and was wondering if any other PLAY users are experiencing this issue. I am constantly getting a Force close issue, everything runs very laggy at times, my "gallery" app does work it crashes as soon as I run it, try to import a picture to a MMS, or watch a video on my Play. The only workaround to watch these videos is to use Astro file manager and manually go to the folder and click on the video file. When I run apps such as Yahoo! mail when updating the inbox it would just freeze, go black, then force close. My friend has the same phone on Verizon and is experiencing the same exact problem. Difference is the Play 4G uses the global SE version of 2.3.3 and Verizon uses stock 2.3.3. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this or any suggestions? I want to use CM7 but there are a ton of issues from what I am reading for CM7 on the PLAY.
I think you might need to reset the phone, just make sure to back up your data
Is there anyway I can backup my apps and data? I can not find a root for this specific Xperia Play

Alright, so I just did it, and I'm still getting a ton of force close errors.
Sounds like you need to reflash your firmware, You can use flashtool and one of the various firmwares in the development section, or you can use SEUS to "repair" your current one.
By the way CM7 works great with GSM plays. It's the CDMA one having trouble. I'm not sure if CM7 is compatible with 4G plays though. Maybe you should ask in the CM7 thread. Either way you will need an unlocked bootloader to flash CM7.

Ok, could you explain to me what you mean SEUS can repair my current firmware? How can I do that? Also, if I install CM7 on my play, what is wrong with it? I hear problems with vibration, touchpads, and volume buttons.I would love CM7 if I could get it to work flawlessly with everything else. To be honest, ill be happy to sacrifice the fake 4G speeds for 3G speeds as long as my Play on CM7 would work perfectly. I had CM7 on my Samsung Captivate I loved it.

SEUS stands for Sony Ericsson update service. You can find more info on it here:
http://talk.sonyericsson.com/thread/1036
Afaik there is nothing wrong with CM7. I'm using it on my play now with no issues. The touchpads work great except they wont work with the EA games, the rest of the pad does though. i have no issues with the volume buttons or vibration

Ok I am trying to install CM7 now, I downloaded the latest nightly build (11/16) and im trying to use the wiki to install CM7 but I am stuck on the unlocking bootloader. I have the unlocking bootloader code from SE website, but I dont get this part:
You will need fastboot on the computer to unlock the bootloader of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. Follow the Android SDK guide, to get the fastboot shell on the computer.
On the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, open the Phone application & enter *#06#. This present the IMEI of the device; write it down, it will be needed later.
Power off the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.
Press & hold the Search button while connecting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to the computer.
On the computer, open terminal and run the following command:
fastboot -i 0x0fce getvar version
NOTE: This step is to ensure the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is connected properly & the drivers setup properly. If you get <waiting for device>, something is not setup properly.
You have a carrier locked phone. You will have to pay to unlock the bootloader using something like omnius or setool. Only factory unlocked plays can unlock the bootloader using fastboot. A carrier locked one doesn't have fastboot enabled.
PM Alejandrissimo for details. He's noob friendly, walks you though the whole thing and unlocks it remotely using his own setool dongle. The cost covers credits needed to use the tool. He charges 24 usd and doesn't even turn a profit. That's your best bet.

Thanks but, no need for that. I actually managed to install the 2.3.4 update to my play now its R800a instead of R800at, I lost the "4G" to just 3G now but its exactly the same to be honest, this build is amazing and smooth. Plus I got Fifa 10 and playstation pocket is pre-installed and works in

Does anyone know, or hear anything about an official AT&T 2.3.4 update for the Xperia play 4g and when it will be released?? i had got a random "a software update is availible" message today and when i went to pc companion to download it i was already up to date... ._. and i know Ics isnt due till late April early May for general release...so i thought maybe it was 2.3.4
I've been running 2.3.4 on my xperia play for some time now. I didn't hack it or anything I use AT&T too.
but my Xperia is a Google IO play I donna if that changes things.
Yeah I connect it to my pc and try to update it but it says it's up to date. I have a r800at as well.

Hello,
Have you uninstalled or frozen any system apps? If so, SE will not let you download any updates. You must restore them for it to work. Either that, or they took the update down. I don't see why they would do that though...
I got the same message yesterday as Black_reign32. I went into the "about phone" section under settings and clicked "check for updates" and it didn't find anything. Now, this could be due to the fact that I am using my r800at on t-mobile. I don't have root, so I haven't frozen any system apps, but I have uninstalled a couple of the apps that came pre-loaded that I didn't want, mainly the att specific ones.
US sexplay owners get the shaft. I have the R800X on Verizon and we're stuck on 2.3.3 as well. You don't realize how far you're left behind until you see that all the goodies (Snapdragon Game Command, PlayStation Store, etc.) Can only be had on devices that have 2.3.4.
I don't want to root, but I don't think I can hold out until next May to get official ICS.
Does, the R800AT have PlayStation pocket?

Well, the deal with ICS is that Sony is releasing it, just like they released 2.3.4. This doesn't mean that AT&T or Verizon will release ICS for our phone. I would recommend either the Sony 2.3.4 signed ROM or the wotanserver.com one. From my understanding, they are the same thing. I'm using the one from wotanserver on my r800at and it's working great! PlayStation Pocket, 2.3.4, the Gamepad works great and no AT&T bloatware. I only root mine to move the big apps off of the internal memory that won't allow it otherwise.

SE said that they're bringing ICS to Verizon and AT&T Xplays by mid-May. Yes the update is coming from SE, but Verizon and AT&T must "approve" it (translation: add their bloatware and shovelware).

Actually you can if you mean the generic north American rom. Its signed so you can install it just fine. That's what I did. I have an AT&T r800at and got rid of the stock firmware and went with the generic. No bloatware for me plus 2.3.4

So, how did you upgrade? Just download the signed rom and install it through the PC Companion software? Did this wipe your phone/data, or did it preserve it like an OTA would? Also, did it change your R800AT to an R800i or a, similar to how installing certain roms change that? Sorry for all the questions and thanks!

Used flashtool to flash the file once downloaded to my PC. Yes it wiped the phone clean so backup anything you need before you flash. I backed up the stock games from the at&t version cause they are different on the generic rom. It changed my model to a r800a from r800at. Let me know if you have any other questions.

How did you back up the games? I assume this process applies to other games that I have purchased/downloaded. Is this the DRM stuff I have heard people talk about?
Do you think changing to an r800a would effect anything important? I am using the play on T-mobile now. I wouldn't think so.
Also, I am assuming this would prevent any OTA to ICS. But, on the same hand, I guess I can always download the signed ROM and re-flash it just like this one.
Do you need root for any of this? I don't currently have root.
Thanks again!

Do you still have HSPA+ support on your phone after shifting from r800at to r800a firmware? And even if the H+ doesn't show up at the top, did your data speeds change at all?
is the 2.3.4 generic rootable? if so ill have no problem restoring **** cuz i use titanium backup
Backedup the stock games by rooting then moving the apk from system/app to the SD card. Once I flashed to generic I reinstalled it using that apk. Use the set InstallLocaton trick to clear up internal space.
You can still root the generic with zerg.
I still get the H+ and didn't notice any change in speeds. Still as fast as with stock.

Hey guys!
I have a Verizon Sony XPERIA PLAY [r800x] that I'd like to overclock to increase my FP/S while playing emulators.
I've seen the guides, and I would need to root, unlock the bootloader, and then finally install a custom ROM.
My question is, is it possible to unlock the bootloader of a Verizon Sony XPERIA PLAY [r800x]?
From what I've read on this forum, the only way to do this, is doing it through a paid service, and they will be able to unlock it for me.
A site I came across was http://unlock-bootloader.com/
Would that service actually work for me? If not, can someone please list one that does, or is even better than that one?
~Thanks for any and all help! It's really appreciated
Yes, that unlocking service should work for an R800x. I've been told the owner is hard to reach anywhrere but on his Google Talk though. FYI, you only need to install a custom kernel, not necessarily a custom rom to gain access to overclocking. That being said, you'd still need an unlocked bootloader. Be prudent when overlocking, as well. It's not fun frying your phone

Thank you for your response!
I got my R800X's bootloader unlocked. I flashed the Doomkernel onto it with no problems. I flashed the phone to 2.3.3 first though, since when I go to update the phone through setting, it doesn't say there's a new update available. I'm not sure why…
http://puu.sh/1iR9r
But, after installing FPSE, I noticed that the performance of the emulator actually went down, even after Overclocking!
The gamepad on the Xperia was severely delayed as well, and unresponsive. I had to constantly spam buttons in the emulator for it to respond.
Those two problems were most apparent in one game, and not others. The strange thing is though that, while on Stock FW, that particular game ran with no problems at all, and no gamepad delay.
So, I wanted to know if there's a Doomkernel compatible with the Xperia's 2.3.2 FW?
Unless there's a better kernel for Overclocking my Xperia Play that's compatible 2.3.2?
I think the problem is that the device doesn't want to update from 2.3.2, and that's why I faced the problems that I did. I think it wants to stay on 2.3.2, or I'll suffer… lol
DooMKerneL should be used on the international 2.3.4 firmware to be most effective (eg. 4.0.2.A.0.42 or higher)

Since my XPERIA PLAY won't update through the normal method of going to "Settings>About Phone>Software Update>Check For Updates" since the Check For Updates option is grayed out. Should I download the international 2.3.4 firmware from here, and then update my XPERIA PLAY with flashtool?
Also, is this the right FW you were referring to? "R800i 4.0.2.A.0.42 Generic UK"
That's the correct firmware, but it's a bit tricky putting it on an R800x. You need to extract system.sin from the FTF file (using 7zip or winrar, etc.) then flash it in fastboot (fastboot flash system system.sin). There should be a guide somewhere on how to do it, but don't just go rushing into it lest you think you've "bricked" your phone (that happens way too often around here)
You can also flash that system.sin with fastboot command
Fastboot flash system system.sin
I do it all the time and it works. Same with kernel.sin

Your right, my apologies. Also I thought that as a CDMA version we couldnt flash the firmware you specified? THat by flashing it we would lose phone funtionality and the homescreen?
Isn't there a CDMA patch or something, to allow data? I don't follow to closely to such things, as I don't use data on mine anyway
There is a CDMA patch specifically for the cyanogenmod based roms. Generally flashing a GSM rom the homescreen is blank and only the notification drop down works. Xdarkmario released a patch that supposedly miss these GSM roms work I. The sense thy you will have a working homescreen but no working CDMA. I tried this patch last night and it was the same results. The only GSM Rom I Yvette found that will give you a full functioning rom without working cell phone ability is true ancestor. So currently flashing any GSM rom leaves you with either no home screen thus useless or flashing true ancestor working rom but no cdma functions.

I am flashing T.A and staying on CDMA kernel 2.3.3, and xdarkmario's patch. But to be honest you can flash T.A. without having to flash xdarkmarios patch. Found this out months ago. For some reason his is the only ROM that a R800x user can flash and still have a working home screen. All others cause the home screen to be missing.

Perfect!
Ok... it's more or less like this:
First you need to know if your phone can unlock bootloader. To do this, you need to enter *#*#7378423#*#* in phone pad/caller. There is no need for send.
You will enter a menu, there you must use touch screen to select "Service Info" and then "Configuration". In "Rooting Status" you should see something like
Rooting Status:
Bootloader unlock Status: Yes
If it says "Yes" then you can unlock bootloader.
A thing to considerate when unlocking bootlocker is: if you unlock bootloader using EMEI service in Sony Webpage, you will loose your DRM and warranty. If you don't want to loose them, you must use test point to unlock bootloader, but understand something, once you unlock bootloader by test point there is NO way to relock it again. If you unlock it by EMAI service you can always relock it flashing a locked bootloader... wich by the way, has no sense at all, why will you lock a bootloader once you unlock it???
Once you unlock the bootloader you could do almost anything with your phone, you could flash custom kernels, flash radio bands, install custom roms, gain root access, etc.
Now, do you need a unlocked bootloader?, that will depends on wich custom rom you want to install. There some roms that doesn't need a unlocked bootloader to install them.
After you have unlocked bootloader you must gain root access with SuperOneClick. Download it, unzip it, put your PLAY in usb debug mode, conect phone, run app, click Root. It's that simple.
With root access now you must install CWM Recovery. There are 2 ways to do it. First way is installing "CWM_Installer-v5.apk" (attached below). You must send it by Bluetooth and install it. When you run it, it will download and install CWM Recovery. Using this way will allow you to enter recovery by pressing vol down key when "Sony Ericsson" title shows after reboot.
The second way to install it is flashing a custom kernel. This is by far the easiest way. I recommend "Advanced Stock (with Recovery)", you can always choose another later on. Right now you only need access to recovery. To enter recovey mode, you must press your back button a couple of times when "Sony Ericsson" title shows after reboot.
Once you have CWM Recovery, you MUST do a full backup. No matter what you do later with your PLAY, if you (for any reason) want to go back stock, with a full backup you can always go back.
Now you are ready to install a custom rom. Wich one install?, that's up to you and what are you gonna do with your PLAY or what do you need from a custom rom.
Xperia PLAY has one BIG problem with custom roms: only 3 or 4 provide full support for game controls and touchpads.
So, your main question right now is: I'm gonna play commercial games like Dead Trigger, or I'm gonna play emulators like Fpse?. If you are gonna emulator any custom rom will do, BUT, if you plan to play commercial games, then choose carefully what rom are you going to install.
I try first CM9 using FreeXperia 149 and I hate it, a bit slow, no tethering, no touchpad support. Then I try CM7.2 and it was as fast as it could be, but no touchpads in commercial games. So my choices went to Dixperia 2 or Xperia NXT LE. There was 2 more options, Cola Rom and Gamer 4 Rom, but I didn't try any of these.
Because you are asking for help on CM installation, I will refer only to this, but remember what I said about commercial games.
To install CM on your Xperia PLAY first you need to know if you have a CDMA or a GSM phone. To do such you need to turn off your phone and remove the battery cover. Then you must observe: can you insert a microSD card only?, if so, then you have a CDMA phone. On the contrary, if you can insert another card behind microSD card, then you must have a GSM phone. For reference, Xperia PLAY R800i, R800a, and R800at are all GSM phones, while Xperia PLAY R800x is only CDMA.
Knowing this, you must download CM according to your phone, this ones for GSM, and this ones for CDMA phones.
Optional, you can download Google apps for CM7 or CM9 from here.
You now need to open rom zip and extract boot.img. You need to flash this using fastboot.
Now put rom zip and Google apps zip on microSD card. Reboot in recovery mode. Inside CWM choose "wipe data/factory reset", then "wipe cache partition", and then in advanced options choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache". Then on main menu choose "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", search for the zip you just download from CM webpage. Repeat steps to install Google Apps, and then reboot.
The very first time will take about 2-3 minutes to start.
Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for your complete answer

So my choices went to Dixperia 2 or Xperia NXT LE. There was 2 more options, Cola Rom and Gamer 4 Rom, but I didn't try any of these.

I'm not interested using the game controller, i'm using it only as normal smartphone

That's kind weird...why buying a gaming phone if you are not going to play with it???
Anyway, for a smartphone use I would choose CM7 without even thinking about it, but maybe you would want to try first Xperia NXT LE for maximum speed and space for apps.
Good luck with that.

no man i didn't unlock the bootloader,i can't do it with flashtool
Sony now has the ability to give out unlock codes for the Play, if my memory serves. You may want to try it. It will break any warranty you have, so be aware of that.

If you didnt unlock your bootloader before installing a custom rom. Idk how else to help you. You might have to send off your xperia play to Sony.

Yes use his flashtool. But the real question can you use it if your bootloader is locked.
works on both
If a boot loader is locked it means its intact hense the word locked. So the phone boots so all you have to do is..
Download your stock ftf file for you phone.
Hold the back button when you connect your phone and flash your firmware back. Light should turn green.
If it don't hold the power button while you connect it Sonay used this method to put it in the first time.i

Hi
I was hoping you could help me. I rooted my play and was following a youtube video as descibed. I couldn't attach the link because I am a new member. It was the new ics 4.0.4 from the android doctor - 100% bug free gaming rom. I had difficulty in flash tools when i needed to go into fastboot mode to install the Lupus kernel. So I installed the cwm mode from the internet and tried to install the ics from its recovery mode. Now I just get the sony logo, then the screen goes black. It is still on. I have reinstalled flashtools and have seen some stock roms on this site to download. The problem I have is when I select the rom to flash, whilst it recognises that my phone is in flash mode, I get a error flash cancelled. I have tried 3 different stock roms. I am in the process of downloading Emma - a flashtool from Sony. Hopefully my phone is not screwed. It was on 2.3.4. One week old unlocked rx800i. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks..
Tommy

You guys remember about 2011 June, a problem came up with unlocked bootloader and OTA update. the first fix that came out broke the radio rom or something so your phone won't accept any sim but will boot and be like a psp or media player. well. that happened to me. and 2 years down the line, i'm still with my play hoping someone could come up with a solution for that.
boots up fine. plays games and audio video no probs but still can't accept any sim in it.
Specs are as follows
model R800i
android version 2.3.4
baseband number 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9-perf
[email protected] #1
Build Number 4.0.2.A.0.42

your best option is PC Companion 2.1, go to support zone, then repair my phone, let it download the contents ( 10 -15 min) then choose your phone- then it will prompt to connect your phone (only connect at this stage - it will fix it this way

That's seem very strange alright. Did you get the error after you connected and selected the xperia play from the list - did it even start the download. It has options for a few different play models. Try with the other play models
