Left Side of Keyboard Not Working - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ho guys I recently got this phone and was working fine till today. Its not new but used. The Phone actually was working until I flashed a ROM and since then the left side of the keyboard does not work. I rebooted and went to stock sprint evo rom and still cant even start phonen with email cause the whole left side of screen letters dont work and the home button aint working like it did either. I was trying a 3.5 rom and even restored to multiple roms saved prior to all this but no luck. i think the roms was called Energy Runnymede and FEAR ME. any suggestions how to get this back. Tried multiple keyboards cant even calibrate it aint reading that side. Bummed out any suggestions guys thanks..

Sounds like a hardware problem to me

so depressed now

If the entire left side of the screen is not working then it's definitely a hardware issue. Good news is that you can fix it yourself for a fairly low price. I've never done it so I don't know much about it, but I've seen plenty of threads about replacing the screen/digitizer. Do some searching around, it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Im going to have to agree with him it sounds like a hardware problem. And as far as fixing it yourself it is fairly easy. My suggestion though is open the phone first because HTC had this brilliant idea to make a phone that used two different flex cables. So with that being said open it and see if your phone has the small one or the big one, you dont want to order the screen and then try and fix it and the cable be the wrong size. (if you choose this path your looking for the Evo LCD and Digitizer Assembly or Evo TSP/LCD Assembly, both the same part just named differently based on where you get it from just CHECK THE FLEX CABLE size and save yourself some trouble) Or the much simplier and cheaper fix take it to s Sprint Repair center and let them look at it. As long as its not physically damaged or liquid damaged you'll be fine and they will look at it and either repair it or replace it as long as you have TEP if not should just be a $35 fee again as long as its not physical or liquid damage.

[Q] Touchscreen Issue (not typical circumstances)

Hey everyone,
I'm a relatively new Wildfire S owner (wanted to test out T-Mobile's new walmart plan). The touchscreen doesn't work for the most part, but every once in a while it becomes responsive for about 3 seconds. It only wants to work after I've swiped continuously on the screen in random directions for a few seconds and then it becomes responsive. Sometimes it works if I apply pressure to the edges of the screen as well.
The phone came with a stock T-Mobile ROM, and I immediately updated it to the newest Gingerbread stock. Still had issues.
I then installed CM7.2, and the issue is still there.
I then tried the screen freezing fix provided by mstfkaratas. Issue is still there.
The only thing left I can think of is the digitizer is bad. Is this a good assumption, or is there something else I can try?
Thanks in advance.
I had simmular issues when i got my mobile phone(freezing after unlock for 4 sec's on right side of the device).
After i changed rom's and did fix by mstfkaratas i dont have them anymore so i think you need to replace your digitizer and there os nothing more you can do as far as i know
If that is the only solution, can you recommend a safe place to buy one? (i.e. no fake parts or scammers). There are tons of eBay sellers, but I don't know what to look for to see if the part's any good.
*edit* I only paid about $50 for this phone, so i was expecting something like this would be necessary. Adding the cost of a digitizer is still cheaper than what the phone usually goes for used.
I just replaced the digitizer... and it still doesn't work. Double-checked the connections at least three times
I think we're on the same boat. One way I could manage to fix it is by locking then unlocking the phone, then the screen will be responsive.
try this tutorial, it should work for you

thanks for the responses. the diag fix didn't work, so i sold the phone on ebay for parts. got almost what i paid for it, actually. ended up getting a used hd2 and putting android on it.

Code to check LCD

Hi,
I wonder if someone knows the codes to check desire z's LCD! And should I just click back button after checking the screen to come out of the lcd check status?
dcpathak
confused in what you are asking... can you give more detail?
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
If you mean testing your lcd for errors then you dont need a code just get this app from market>super manager> it has a tool that run various test on you g2 and you can run it over and over again
dont really know what code you want.
Hit thanks if i helped
Sorry for creating unnecessary confusion
What I meant is that there are some codes that can be used to test various functions in our Desire Z. For instance, the simplest one is to check the IMEI number we dial "*#06#". I remember guys at repair center using some code like *#....to check whether the LCD is functioning normally. After dialing this code, we could test the LCD by drawing random lines using our fingers and if some part of the LCD is not working, it would not respond to the touch.
Now why I need to check the LCD: around one and half months ago, I was caught in heavy rains and though I immediately ran for cover, I doubt some moisture seeped inside my Desire Z. Since then the phone is working weird: not responding to touches, start dialing things on its own , vibrating without any touch from my side etc. Also there is a horizontal strip across the screen that doesn't respond to touch even when rest of it is functioning normally. I rooted my device after that believing it to be a software glitch but the problem is there. Some other people are also facing similar things and they suggested replacing the Digitizer. I just want to make sure is it only Digitizer that I need to replace or the whole LCD+Digitizer setup! I hope now I make sense.
And thanks a lot for responding quickly
I don't know of a diagnostics code for the LCD, but yes there are. Some for other functions, maybe try Google
There are apps out there that can do this as well as some Roms. I believe just about every ICS and jellybean ROM I've used has this in the developers settings
Its worth a shot but I don't believe this would tell you if its hardware or software, don't see how it could unless you can separate the ROM form the diagnostics (like in recovery)
My guess is its hardware, and visual problems are LCD, touch problems are the digitizer, well also the flex or motherboard could be the cause but almost for surely you are looking at replacing the digitizer, not too bad of a task, maybe an hour if you unfimilar and around 20$ on eBay
Good luck!

Thanks demkantor,
I just forgot about the developer options of the ICS roms. Just checked using it, everything seems to be fine with the LCD. Yes, I should go with replacing the digitizer. only I'm bit reluctant (as I was before rooting) since it involves almost dismantling the whole device...flex cable, lcd and then reach the digitizer. But that is the last resort . shall do it one day when the things get over my head. thanks for your help and yes, the thanks button pressed

Phone boots, qwerty keys light up, but no display, soft key or LED illumination

I've searched the forums for a while and haven't found an issue exactly like this..
At first my phone would boot and the soft keys would light up and the LED would shine while charging. Shortly after that, I had no display and no illumination whatsoever on my screen. I just disassembled the phone to make sure all of the bands and connecters are connected and they are fine. I have reason to believe the screen works because when I receive a call, i can press where I usually would to accept calls and it works.
I have done some research on getting a new digitizer, screen, ribbons, etc.. but it's just too costly to justify it seems.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You may have to go into sprint and ask for a new screen. That happened to me once and they replaced it and it worked fine ever since. I had water damage on mine though

You can do that? Will they deny you if you're using a rooted phone or do you have to go back to stock first...

Depends on where you go and who you get. The last time I went, the associate thought it was awesome that I have sense on my phone. If possible, Odin back though.
I did get around to blindly putting my phone into download mode and flashing the stock tar through odin.. I'm assuming the flash worked since I heard the stock boot/shutdown animation theme music accordingly.
Unfortunately the screen and the soft keys are still not illuminated. The QWERTY remains functional including backlighting.
My phone is no longer on any network, but do you think I could still take it up to a location and bs my way into getting at least a used equal or lesser value device?
Put it up on Fleabay as a clean ESN, broken screen phone and stop wasting our time while you try to scam Sprint.

You're right, certainly not an ethical option. I'm more of a DIY person though, as I'm sure I could say the same for everyone else here.
Do you think it's the whole screen that needs to replaced? Ribbons and all? If so, do you know of a good source for me to purchase what I need

Don't do it. I bought my Epic for $80 and replacement screen costs $70. AND I'm in China where electronic products and accessories should be cheap.

[Q] Capacitive buttons stop working

Today is a very sad day for me somehow my new htc one x's capaticive buttons stopped working i restarted and even factory resetted and they are not working anymore
my previous htc hd2 was stopped digitizer working too. How unlucky i am.
I guess I neet to install CWM and using on screen button
which rom do you reccomend? ı used to install couple roms to hd2 but i havent tried with one x
thank you all
Factory reset will only reset it to the rom you have flashed. Have you tried flashing the correct ruu for your phone? When you say it's new, how new? New enough to return to where you got it for replacement?

i took the phone to my local market n came to know that the their isnt any separate capacitive buttons cable, it is embedded within the lcd, so if i have to order then whole complete lcd + digizer + module, and i checked the online purchase price is almost the same price the local market ppl are offering that is near 60 dollars.
Just that i am not sure why does the buttons stopped working and if somehow why they started working n now have again stopped ;(

not sure what you mean.. look at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Touch-S...865?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d02ec98e9
anyway it happened to me with another phone that a portion of the digitizer stopped working for a few days, then it started working again and then it stopped for good and had to replace it.

hmmm, well actually i was reading all the other threads with this issue and came upton this
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696552
Which shows "DO NOT try to replace the screen by yourself" and i can see that on my set that its rather v hard to do this thing instead everyone says to buy the whole module as it is very complex thing to do.

it is hard to separate the digitizer from the lcd but it's doable and nothing like the iphone digi+lcd that uses an epoxy adhesive. so if you are carefull (or have someone skilled doing it for you) you wont break the lcd and you'll save quite some money. it's true though that the new digitizer wont stick to the lcd as well as a "genuine combo digi+lcd" and you will notice dust building in between the two. my advice, if you know someone that is skilled enough, try get the digitizer off without breaking the lcd and if you manage that then buy the new digitizer. otherwise since you said that changing the whole digi+lcd is not an option you can always try sell your one x as damaged or use it as an expensive paperweight.
best of luck mate, i hope you solve it one way or another.

haha that paperweight thing made my day... well thanks for the advice but i think i am going to wait until it gets ok by itself as it happened before until then icecoldjelly rom would be a temporary solution for the onscreen buttons. Thanks anyway

[Q] SDS? Hardware or Software Issue?

I am in need of help! My phone is dead. Here's the rundown
AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II (i317)
Used on the Straight Talk Network
Running the latest Unofficial CM12, Lollipop 5.01 for the last week and loved every bit of it. No problems.
I cracked my screen in July and never got it fixed. The cracks spread and I was planning on getting it fixed, but haven't yet. I dropped it two days ago and then the screen wouldn't come back on. The buttons lit up and it would even ring when called. So I thought my screen was finally gone and started looking for a replacement. I took the battery out because I didn't want it ringing without the ability to answer it. Yesterday I put the fully charged battery in and attempted to turn the phone back on. It will not come back on and I think it's more than just the screen now.
Red LED blinks. Half of the screen seems like it is turning on, but then it all goes dark again. Will not enter Download or Recovery. I've been reading and thinking this is more of a hardware issue than software. I've flashed dozens of Roms with only minor issues here and there. I haven't had any issue with Lollipop and can't see it being related, although I could really be wrong.
My question is, is my phone dead? Do I need a new motherboard, along with the screen I was already gonna replace? If that's the case, I will just replace the phone and start over, unless anyone has free parts they want to donate, LOL! Seriously, just looking for input and suggestions.
Thanks

There's pretty much nothing to say, but I guess I will.
You can't get to download mode, can't get to recovery mode, you can't see the screen......
If you're looking for a second opinion to say you're f*cked, then consider this it.
If you could get to download mode or recovery mode, it has a chance. But you still have hardware issues like the screen to replace. Which is not fun.
Possible yes. But unless you really know what you're doing and careful as hell, you take the chance of hosing something else up. Like ripping a ribbon cable or yanking a soldered wire out....
I tried replacing a Motorola Atrix screen. The result of that was me buying an Atrix 2.
Unless you are emotionally attached to this phone, bury it.

Hey, Thanks man! That's what I needed to hear. I have been flashing Roms since I had a Sprint PPC 6700 and I have enough experience to now I was f#@$ed, but I really needed to hear it from someone else. Someone with developer experience. A screen assembly and motherboard cost more than another phone on ebay or Swappa. Welp, back to the drawing board. Anyone got a note 2 they wanna sell cheap?

No worries.
Feb 3 I'll be on 2 years with my Note 2. Longest I've kept one. Only have one smallish crack on the lower left corner.
With everything I've done to it I'm amazed it's still working.
