Every time I try to flash something I get a message saying "failed to verify whole file signature. " Any idea what it could be?

What were you trying to flash?
Sent from the future.

First got h
The error when trying to make a nandroid backup, then decided I'd just flash Calkulin's ROM even without a nandroid and got the same error.

I've also gotten an error that reads: "Your su binary is outdated."

First off hope you're not using ROM manager - that doesn't work with this device and has been know to brick it.
Sounds like you are. and if not...
As Blues already asked, What recovery are you using.
Also if you are using Mobile Odin you also cannot flash modems with it.
Also more unasnswered questions:
What ROM are you on? GB, ICS, JB?
What Kernel? And what recovery with that kernel?
What modem where you trying to flash.
What steps did you actually take to get into recovery
Toggle Script Asserts to Disabled if it is the same FI27.ZIP from xda then it is a good file. I've used it. Look below on the menu when you get to ”select zip” you want to install. Should show enabled or disabled when you select the script asserts toggle.

Guessing you figured it out.....
If you ask a question it's a great help to all if you post a follow up. That's how a forum works.

Rooting stock 4.1.2

I know I can flash any custom ROM I want now or the rooted/odexed version of the 4.1.2 OTA, but just for a little while I'd like to keep the flash counter at zero.
I'm still on 4.1.1 because I just got my phone 2 days ago, and I flashed the non-tripping stock root odin package before I even turned my phone on. But now I see there's an update for 4.1.2 (that someone said has multiview???) and I was wondering if there's a way to get to 4.1.2 and root it without tripping the flash counter.
Ideas?
Exynos abuse exploit. Google search it after you take the update. Download it and run it.

I'm not questioning you (thanks by the way), but I thought the 4.1.2 update was specifically to fix that issue. Was that not for the Note II?

Get the update.zip file and copy to your cache directory .
Go into recovery mode (vol up +home+power) → flash from cache. and done ...It won't wipe your data... . .and you will get you multiview.
From your previous comment. ..don't worry about custom rom count. .it can be easily rest via triangleaway.

Try recovery mode →clear cache ..Then copy update zip into cache. .som3 people suggest full unroot before runing the update..try that. I ran the update.zip in my wifes phone today with this method.

Use the exynos abuse apk to quickly root. Quick question, are you using stock recovery?

Did. Still gave me the error when flashing in recovery. Also the root is like not working completely. Some apps don't ask for permission and so I can't give it to them.
Edit: bought supersu pro and it worked nicely. (the root acess, flashing still doesn't work)

Wasn't this error related to having an older version of CWM?

Yeah, try updating your CWM or consider switching to TWRP.

I had that issue once. Even going back to bare stock didn't fix it.
If you restore a nandroid which you made I hope. Go to that folder /data you'll find there isn't a folder called lost+found
Create one. Reboot into recovery and you should be okay.

Delete it and create it.
The time it happened to me the folder turned into a random file. One I read after a few min of googlefu
If your recovery is up to date, try flashing the prev version.

A lot depends on the specific reason for the error. Typically this means a bad download. Try downloading the ROM again and see if it has the same MD5 hash tag as the ROM that isn't working. Also make sure that it is a ROM for your exact device...sometimes this causes failures as well....
